expanding “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft aglay” but despite unsolicited hold ups, technical hitches and torrential rain, our newly expanded Bishopton Depot is finally open! It’s taken 9 months from demolition to completion, but the consensus of opinion so far from customers and staff alike is this late arrival was well worth the wait! “It’s been almost 30 years since we moved into these Bishopton premises” says Hamilton Brothers MD, Eric Gardiner. “Times have changed, and these days, expectations of customers and staff are quite rightly much higher. We had simply outgrown the old depot, and my choice was to relocate or renovate, so given the current economic climate it was an easy decision! I really want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience and endurance in what for me has been the most exciting project in the 66

The massively expanded Parts Department and Showroom will undoubtedly increase efficiency, and the new, purpose build 5,000sqft Agricultural workshop combined with the complete overhaul of our existing workshop which is now dedicated to Groundcare and Garden Power machinery will enable us to significantly improve our servicing and repair facility across the board. We have also invested in an additional 15 tonnes HGV which will also expedite collection and delivery times. Further commitment to the provision of exemplary customer service includes recruiting two workshop assistants for agriculture and groundcare, so see our advert on page 7 and if

Does this “In this Health and Safety crazed environment we now live in, it’s hardly surprising that the last few years have seen a significant increase in the sale of Straw Shredders” says George Harvie, our Tarbolton Depot Manager.” Risk of injury from rebelling livestock when bedding, and lack of manual labour has always been a serious concern, but the introduction of mechanisation has dramatically decreased the potential for human harm, increased productivity, and cut down on labour costs”.
To cope with this burgeoning demand, Truro based Teagle, widely regarded as the UK’s leading manufacturer of Feeder Bedders and Straw Shredders have been sharpening up their Tomahawks in time for an Autumn launch - you ‘herd’ it here first folks! Innovations on previous models include a new discharge rotor upper housing and chute assembly for smoother output plus a larger capacity hydraulic valve for increased conveyor speed giving faster discharge rates. Slat grippers and an extended feed slide have been added to improve bale rotation and boost feed flow, and redesigned bale restraint fingers give better material movement which will further increase feed rates. George has just received a consignment of the revamped Teagle Tomahawk 8100 which are now ready for despatch across the group, so to arrange a demonstration of this superb machine, call our Tarbolton Depot on 01292 541445. 4

news The Blair dairy farming dynasty at East Kerse Farm, Renfrewshire dates back to 1717. These days, it is home to a thriving 100 hectare beef enterprise and successful contracting business AL & J Blair, and the ancestors of father and son team Archie and Allan Blair would be so proud that their heritage was safe in their capable hands. “We decided to diversify from dairy to beef 3 years ago” says patriarch Archie. “Our profits had been literally milked dry, significant investment was required to upgrade our milking parlour, and after 50 years of milking cows I wanted an easier life!” he quipped. Meanwhile, over the last 20 years his son Allan has used his inherent entrepreneurial skills to great effect and built up a flourishing contracting business. “Opportunity first knocked when Dad bought me a post knocker when I was just 14” says Allan. “I constructed a perimeter fence round our farm and started to get jobs from neighbouring farmers!” he laughs. At 17 he bought a second hand sprayer, went to Auchincruive College on a Youth Training Scheme, gained qualifications in fencing and spraying and has never looked back. Allan also attributes his success to having the right machinery and equipment for the job, and dependable service backup and that’s why they have been loyal customers of Hamilton Brothers for decades. “The service facility is second to none” says Allan. “The night time callout service is a godsend, and with three depots in close proximity, downtime is never an issue as a replacement machine has always been found to get me up and running in no time”. The Blairs purchased their first 2
Entrepreneurial flair from the Blair family wheel drive Massey Ferguson 390 in 1990 followed by a MF3075 4 wheel drive which served them well for 14 years. By 2005, more investment was required as the booming contracting business
Opportunity first knocked when Dad bought me my first post knocker at age 14. had expanded to agricultural and domestic fencing, seasonal spraying, silage making, sub soiling, fertiliser spreading and winter ploughing and gritting. To cope with demand and further increase efficiency, Allan invested in a Hardi Master VHY 1200 litre Sprayer with front tank and 2,500 litre bowser to the rear, and shortly afterwards took delivery of his first MF7480 Vario, with a second following in 2010. With its Dyna VT Fendt transmission this powerful combination enables him to spray a massive 60 acres nonstop in
under four hours! Talking about his MF7480 his ‘baby’, Allan’s enthusiasm is almost tangible! “I could never go back to conventional transmission” he says, “it never lets me down and with its spacious, comfortable cab and sophisticated computerised system which gives me day to day running costs and expenditure it’s also my mobile office! ” For silage making Allan rates the Lely 320 MC and 320 FC mower conditioners due to their low horsepower requirement and ease of access for cleaning, maintenance and blade changing, and the Amazone ZAM 2200 is his preferred machine for fast, effective fertiliser spreading. So how does Allan manage to balance farming and family life with a busy contracting business? “It’s easy really, and all down to planning” he says. “We have instigated a two month calving pattern which frees me up for the rest of the year”. With two young sons who are already displaying a passion for farming, East Kerse Farm will undoubtedly be a thriving enterprise for generations to come! 5

a healthy herd is
no fluke!
The record breaking summer rainfall will inevitably lead to a rise in the incidence of fluke. As fluke and other insidious parasites (lungworm, lice and mites) rear their ugly heads with the onset of housing, let’s look at ways to nip them in the bud and stop disease spreading! Liver fluke takes several weeks to develop into the adult stage, so if you identify its presence during faecal monitoring prior to housing, the most effective regime is to administer Triclabendazole,

to your dairy hygiene problems! Very few dairy farmers are currently making any profit from their dairy cows, indeed many are lucky to break even, and others are going out of business. So what can you do to avoid being financially penalised, or worse, losing your livelihood? The old adage ‘cleanliness is next to godliness’ has never been more apposite in today’s milking parlours, so don’t be tempted to cut costs by using
avoid being financially penalised cheap dairy hygiene products as you might pay a drastic price. Correct use of effective cleaning chemicals such as Kilcosan DX Autotank and Circulation cleaner (free with our Autumn offers) will keep your milking equipment tip top. More farmers are also moving towards pre and post teat dipping and spraying as this, plus clean housing will significantly reduce the incidence of mastitis in your dairy herd. We work closely with Lockerbie based Kilco and as well as stocking a full range of their quality products, we are always on hand to give you impartial advice and offer solutions to your dairy hygiene problems.
