The ways Hamilton is taking the lead
HAMILTON HAS BEEN COMMITTED to preparing students for lives of meaning, purpose, and active citizenship for more than two centuries. While our core mission has remained constant, the needs of our students and the world around them are always evolving, and the complex and multifaceted conversations taking place about the value of higher education, particularly the liberal arts, demands continuous innovation and steadfast leadership to meet the moment.
What ensures Hamilton’s position among the finest institutions of learning in this ever-changing world is effective leadership. It’s not just about enrolling students, offering courses and services, and maintaining facilities — although those priorities are important, too. What sets Hamilton apart is visionary leadership at every level of the institution that propels ideas into reality. It’s about attracting the best
and brightest students and teachers, igniting passion in and out of the classroom, fostering innovation and collaboration, and championing excellence across every facet of campus life. It’s about giving our students the tools they will need to adapt and thrive in a world we have yet to imagine.
Hamilton’s liberal arts education has not only remained relevant but has thrived because people here are forward-thinkers who see and do things differently. By constantly challenging themselves, they empower those around them to do the same.
On the pages that follow, you’ll find examples of how Hamilton’s commitment to effective, and sometimes groundbreaking, leadership is impacting the work happening on College Hill, as well as the names of those whose generosity makes it possible.
How Hamilton Leads: Dedication & Expertise
IFIRST CAME TO HAMILTON IN 1983 as an eager but anxious first-generation, first-year student from nearby Rome, New York. Four decades later, I’m still at Hamilton, where my life’s work has been helping deserving students have access to what I truly believe is one of the best educations anywhere in the world.
There have been many constants during the past 40 years — the brilliance and devotion of the faculty, the talent and ability of the students, the care and loyalty of my employee colleagues, the generosity and allegiance of our alumni, and the dedication and expertise of the leadership.
I’ve been on College Hill long enough to witness firsthand the genuine commitment and visionary leadership of five Hamilton presidents. Steven Tepper now joins that list, and already we feel his joy and passion for this community and higher ed. He is inspiring us all with what we’ve learned is his favorite question…What if?
So, while the person occupying the first floor corner office in Buttrick Hall has changed, I can assure you that Steven shares the
same aspirations and vision you and I have for our alma mater, and that Hamilton will continue changing lives, like mine. Alumni have provided the foundation to make all that happen, and I hope you will join me in supporting Steven and his vision for Hamilton this year and in the future.

How Hamilton Leads: Admission
“Keeping the Mission in Admission”
ON A SUNNY DAY IN MID-JUNE, Vice
President for Enrollment Management Monica Inzer had a packed schedule of meetings, calls, and interviews. That’s nothing new, and neither was having John McLaughlin, associate vice president and dean of admission, join her for many of them. What was different was that these were Inzer’s final days in Siuda House before retiring on June 30, and McLaughlin, who arrived on College Hill in January 2023, was preparing to succeed her in leading Hamilton’s enrollment management division.
Meg Keniston from the Communications and Marketing Office asked them to reflect on their time at Hamilton and what’s on the horizon. Here are some excerpts.
Monica, what drew you to Hamilton, and, more importantly, what has kept you here?
Monica Inzer (MI): I grew up near Hamilton, over the hill in Sherrill — actually on Hamilton Avenue, believe it or not, with a dog named Alex! I was a first-generation college student, but my parents made it clear that I was going to college, and my mother and grandmother really wanted me to consider Hamilton. My mother often said, “The best college you will find is in our backyard.” But I believed it was too close to home. So, I went to Skidmore and was gone from the area for 20 years when the job at Hamilton came open. I said to my husband, “What do you think about being near family?” I was loving my job as an admission dean at a business school, and before that at an engineering school, but I wanted to get back to the liberal arts. He said, “I think we should go for it.”
Never in a million years did I think I’d get the job, much less
be here 20 years later. Also, I got to tell my mother she was right. Hamilton is the best college I could find. And this is the community that I have loved more than any other I’ve ever been part of. For me, it’s the people; it’s also a place that has strong and enduring values, and it’s committed to access, opportunity, and excellence. I will always be grateful to Joan Hinde Stewart for inviting me to join her team at Hamilton in her first year, and also to David Wippman, who helped me want to stay. During both of their presidencies, I always felt that Hamilton was a place where we could “keep the mission in admission.”
When you arrived, what did the average class look like and how is that different today? What factors and decisions have influenced those changes?
MI: We look different in many ways — so does the country, and the world, and many colleges. We’ve moved forward on so many fronts, as we should have, but Hamilton had already been doing a number of things right. While our admit rate was a lot higher and our application numbers were lower, and the student body wasn’t as academically strong or diverse as it is today, my predecessor was beginning to turn the ship around and head in the right direction. He planted a lot of seeds that I got to help water and nourish and make sure they grew into a garden.
Enhancing Hamilton’s position as a school of opportunity has been foundational to your tenure. What were the first steps you took to increase access?
MI: When I got here, we had a small number of merit scholarships that didn’t seem to be making much of a difference, and for the
most part we were giving those out to students who did not need financial aid. At the same time, we didn’t have enough financial aid to admit all of the students we wanted to. Those two things were at odds, and the students who were getting merit because they didn’t need money looked very similar to those who were getting denied because they did. I thought, “Well, what if we shift this merit money over to our need-based financial aid pool?” We ran a lot of models and worked with the faculty and board to socialize the idea.
It was not without risk, and, in fact, many schools were doing more instead of less merit scholarship aid. The faculty were very worried about losing the strongest students in their classrooms, and I let them know we weren’t admitting many of the strongest students because they needed financial aid. They supported the idea, as did our board, and I remember thinking that if this didn’t work, someone else might be standing in front of them in less than five years.
It worked in more ways than one. Our yield went up, our admit rate went down, the quality of our students improved, and so did the diversity. But, it also put a spotlight on the reality of Hamilton’s financial aid picture. Our board asked, “What do you mean we don’t have enough money to admit the best students?” I explained that while we met 100 percent need, we were need-sensitive in our admission decisions [meaning when we ran out of money, we ran out of spots for candidates who needed it]. We pulled back the curtain on that for people, and they began asking more questions and studying what it would take to become need-blind. Who else does this? Is this the right thing for Hamilton?
By now, many are aware of that day in 2009 when Hamilton became need-blind: At a planning meeting with senior staff and the board, five trustees each spontaneously committed $500,000 right there in the room to make it happen (with a sixth joining later for a total of $3 million). You’ve described it as “a transformative day and momentous decision for Hamilton.” When you look back on your career, will that stand out as your favorite moment?
MI: It was the single best day in my career. Our president and our board did something incredibly important for the future of Hamilton, and it was great to have a small role in that.
As leaders at the College, we usually move forward a little bit on a lot of things. It’s rare that you can make one thing more important than all the other important things.” Our board members did that. They made it happen by providing the bridge funding, and then our alumni, parents, and community really supported it with a campaign that followed.
As the cost of college continues to increase and we try to figure out how we’re going to support students with financial aid, I hope need-blind admission is sustainable. But more importantly, I hope that access and opportunity remain cornerstone values for Hamilton.
Monica, when you hired John in 2022, what excited you about the skills he would bring? What have you learned about him in the year-and-a-half since he arrived that you believe positions him to succeed?
MI: John is so smart and thoughtful, and he is a data scientist who embraces “data with a soul” — one of my favorite mantras. He
is also funny and kind, and is someone I’m going to miss having down the hall from me every day. In many ways, I believe he is the future of our profession. And one of the reasons retiring feels good to me is because I’m passing the torch to John. While I’ve loved this community, I think renewal is good for me and also for Hamilton. John brings a new toolkit and the right balance of affection and ambition for Hamilton, and it is going to be fun for me to cheer for him and the team’s success from the sidelines.
John, what drew you to Hamilton from your work as vice dean and director of admission at the University of Pennsylvania?
John McLaughlin (JM): Hamilton was the first college that I ever visited. I was 8 and helped move my brother into North [Residence Hall] when he was coming here as a first-year student. Seeing and hearing all the sights and sounds from a college campus was really exciting and inspiring, even at a young age. For so many years I had admired Hamilton from afar and then had a chance encounter with Monica at an admission event while I was working at Penn. We struck up a conversation, and then a mentorship, a partnership, and a friendship.
A lot is going on in higher education today that’s making national headlines. How do you prepare for the unexpected?
MI: It’s true, the challenges are numerous. But we’ve always had challenges. In my 35-year career, the demographics have changed, we’ve had recessions, selective college admission has been scrutinized, college rankings have impacted our work, and standardized testing has been debated ad nauseum. There are all kinds of things that have been hard, but we are smart folks who figure out new and creative ways to respond. The great thing about admissions is you get to improve every year. You enroll fabulous students, you hit reset, and you start again. You learn from what you did last year, and you do more of what works well and less of what doesn’t. You change with the students.
I think Hamilton is positioned to navigate what seems to be a fasten-your-seatbelt time for enrollment leaders largely because we’ve hired John. He’s got the right combination of strategic thinking and good gut instinct, and I’m really excited to see what he does.
JM: Your points, Monica, are really well taken. Challenges are not new to us. We persist and grow and continue to reinvent ourselves and the work that we do.
I think about some of the things that are on the horizon right now. The Supreme Court decision is something that we’ve been thinking a lot about over the course of the last year. Many conversations are taking place around standardized testing. And I know you and I have spoken a lot about shifting demographics and what that means for our population, our prospects, and how we need to be thinking not just of what is immediately in front of us, but what’s going to be in front of us three years, five years, 10 years from now, so that we can anticipate and respond to the challenges that are coming our way.
You mentioned last year’s Supreme Court ruling as a challenge, and obviously FAFSA was an issue this year. How does Hamilton address those and other challenging topics?
MI: We learned a lot during COVID. There was no rulebook for how to handle that. The College sent everyone home in the middle of March, and the Admission Office stayed a week longer to get decisions out. We had no idea if admitted students who couldn’t visit would choose us, but we said whatever is best in class, we’re going to be it. So, we brainstormed as a team. People got creative; we knew the College was counting on us to deliver students that next fall. Lots of campus partners rallied around us. Hamilton is great that way … innovative and entrepreneurial and risk-taking when we need to be, and at the same time careful and cautious when warranted. And the same would apply to some of the stuff we’re going through now. Hamilton will persevere.
JM: Agreed. And on the subject of the Supreme Court, this was not an unexpected outcome. Over the course of the last 20 years, I remember watching Gratz, Grutter, and both Fisher cases — at any one of those points it could have been the start of a shift. And, although the Court preserved the consideration of race in those cases, they were signaling change on the horizon. When this Court took the most recent case, I felt the shift was inevitable. So, we thought carefully around how we might prepare or respond. And we needed to wait to see what the judgment was going to look like so that we could respond in a way that comported with the new interpretation of the law.
I feel like we have responded well. We continue to work toward recruiting and enrolling a diverse and talented class within the current interpretation of the law. In fact, it’s strengthened our resolve in a way to do this work despite the new challenges that we see. But, even now, we’re awaiting the final details on the class. We’ll pull back the curtain and begin to ask some of these questions that we’ve talked about already, what worked, what didn’t, what do we keep, what do we change, and learn from the experience of the past year to shape where we want to go in the future.
MI: We went into this year thinking the Supreme Court decision was going to be the most disruptive thing that would happen to us, and the FAFSA challenges seem to be eclipsing that at the moment. Due to the herculean efforts of our financial aid team, we’re navigating it all fairly well and are in better shape than most colleges.
We know there are hundreds of thousands fewer students who did not apply for financial aid through the federal forms this year than a year ago. In many ways this is going to be a lost generation that I think we’re going to be talking about for a while, as a profession and in general. This is one of the reasons there is so much scrutiny for higher education right now; people are questioning the value of education, and the federal government made it harder to know if you would qualify for financial aid. This is an opportunity for Hamilton; we will endure this challenge, we have generous resources, and we will be a positive light and force for our students.
Are there issues specific to liberal arts colleges like Hamilton that may be different from some of the challenges other higher education institutions face? How is Hamilton equipped to tackle those?
JM: The questions around the value proposition of higher education are more numerous and louder in recent years. This is especially true with regard to a liberal arts education and how that translates into outcomes, employment, and satisfaction. The connection between pre-professional education and outcomes is ostensibly clear. You learn this job skill to perform this job. But what happens when that job requires a different skill set in five years?
The adaptability of thinking that we develop at Hamilton is just as important as the content. It’s how to think; it’s how to make connections between different ideas and areas. It’s how to look at a complex problem with the lens of a scientist, a social scientist,
with perspective from the humanities and the arts, and bring all of those different lenses to bear. It’s how to communicate points clearly, persuasively, and effectively. I think that, collectively, liberal arts institutions can do better in terms of articulating the real translatable benefits of a liberal arts education. That’s something that we strive to do here, too.
I’ve often heard admission described as an art and a science, and I think that’s something Monica and I share, combining a lens of humanity with a lens of analysis to try and understand and make sense of what it is that we’re seeing and how we can learn from these data to do better work for the people that we interact with and for the community that we serve. Monica, you mentioned that you’re excited for Hamilton and excited for me. I’m excited myself, with thanks to you for the work that you’ve done over the 20 years to help position Hamilton to move forward. I’m excited to help lead the enrollment division into its next chapter.
MI: John and I have known each other for years. I’ve admired his work and saw him as a rising star in the profession, and it makes me feel really good knowing that the admission process and Hamilton’s commitment to access are in excellent hands.
JM: I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Monica over the last year-and-a-half. I’ve tried to absorb as much information about the field, about Hamilton, Siuda House, and everything in that time. And I know that you’ll not be far away, which is reassuring. It goes to show that we’re always learning and not just improving our processes and the work that we do, but improving ourselves.
MI: I’m going to miss this, but I’m really excited for Hamilton, for the future, and for John. Someone told me you should always leave the party while it’s still fun. It’s the right time.
What’s next for you, Monica?
MI: Good question. I keep saying that I’m more worried about Monica without Hamilton than I am Hamilton without Monica. Maybe that is the point. I’m looking forward to travel adventures with my husband, and more quality time with our kids and parents. I might have one more chapter in me; after a bit of a break to catch my breath and see what I miss, I’m excited to see what challenges and opportunities emerge. But I’ll always bleed blue.

How Hamilton Leads: Academics
AT THE END OF EACH ACADEMIC YEAR, in addition to reviewing the annual reports for each of Hamilton’s more than 200 full-time professors, I get to know our faculty better through the presentation of awards for teaching and scholarly achievement. The names of newly honored recipients are added to plaques that hang outside my office in Buttrick Hall, a constant reminder that our faculty members regularly engage in groundbreaking research across the curriculum to advance new knowledge.
Hamilton professors produce an average of 350 papers, books, articles, and exhibits each year. National and international media outlets and leading higher education publications turn to our experts for insights, with more than 11,000 articles and broadcasts featuring the College annually.
What's more, these scholars also demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to teaching, time and again showing how eager they are to invite talented students to share in their professional endeavors. It's not uncommon for students to conduct research alongside professors, present with them at national conferences, and co-author articles in scholarly journals.
Scholarship involves more than the creation and sharing of knowledge; it requires empowering learners to think critically,
apply concepts creatively, and adapt to new challenges. At Hamilton, scholarship and teaching inform each other.
It’s an honor to work with such highly regarded teachers whose leading-edge scholarship informs their teaching and inspires our students.

Mo Alloush, assistant professor of economics, is an applied microeconomist with research interests in the economics of poverty — specifically, he explores what reinforces poverty with a specific focus on psychological well-being. In addition, he considers the role of cash transfer programs in alleviating shortand long-term poverty. In 2022, he was awarded a $40,000 USAID grant to study measurement issues related to poverty traps and resilience among poor households. He has nine publications in peer-reviewed journals, each of which has received numerous citations. Of works in progress, one has been described by a senior colleague to bridge “... two particular strands of research within the area of in-utero exposure [to social protection programs] and economic [and health] outcomes.”
Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera, the Sidney Wertimer Professor for Excellence in Advising and Mentoring, specializes in the post-communist countries of Eurasia. A former
Fulbright Scholar to the Russian Federation, she is principal investigator of the Survey of Russian Elites, the only repeated cross-sectional survey of high-ranking Russians. She has published numerous articles and policy reports using this survey, often co-authoring with students. In 2022, Rivera launched the Ukraine Assistance Initiative with Hamilton’s Levitt Center and Russian Studies Program. Students work alongside her to educate the community about the Russo-Ukrainian War, assist local Ukrainian refugees, and support prisoners detained in Russia on political or religious grounds. She and Professor of Art Robert Knight also pioneered the Digital Human Rights Investigations Project, which includes a course that trains students to use open-source intelligence to expose both the detention of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom and Russian war crimes.
Nadya Bair, assistant professor of art history, has been recognized as a leading historian of photography. Her first book, The Decisive Network: Magnum Photos and the Postwar Image Market, won the 2021 PROSE Award in Media and Cultural Studies. Her second book project, “Reinventing Documentary: Cornell Capa and the International Center of Photography,” was supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 2023-24. Last year, Bair published three essays, including an entry on “Collaboration” in The Art Institute of Chicago Field Guide to Photography and Media, which appeared alongside
contributions by well-known scholars and photographers. “Every indication is that Bair is becoming an important scholar of international reputation,” a colleague wrote.
Max Majireck, associate professor of chemistry, conducts groundbreaking research, and publishes and presents extensively, often with students. In 2016, his lab discovered a novel and potentially valuable class of compounds known as pyridinium ketene hemiaminals. Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, he and his students are continuing work on that project; they have already identified multiple new reaction types they believe will be adopted by other synthetic chemists for a range of applications such as drug or material syntheses. In addition, the American Heart Association awarded him funds to collaborate with the Masonic Medical Research Institute, a highly regarded cardiovascular disease research institute in Utica, on developing small molecule-embedded nanoparticles to study atherosclerosis.
Associate Professor of Psychology Vikranth Bejjanki is pushing the boundaries of cognitive neuroscience research
using functional neuroimaging. Regularly sought out by colleagues at Princeton, Yale, and Washington University in St. Louis, he and his collaborators received a $705,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to examine predictors of neurodevelopmental outcomes in children in low-income settings across the world. He publishes in top journals, and, according to a colleague, his work “has the potential to fundamentally change the way we understand and study learning in the human brain. His novel approaches ... make him … one of only a handful of neuroscientists capable of the complex analyses needed to investigate the inner workings of neuroimaging data.”
Mackenzie Cooley, associate professor of history, studies the natural world in early modern science and medicine. Her book The Perfection of Nature, which tells the history of Renaissance animal and human breeding projects, is being taught in premodern history classes and has led to invited lectures at such prestigious institutions as Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Stanford, and the Smithsonian. Her latest research focuses on the history of bioprospecting, natural product extraction, and the early modern creation of the pharmaceutical industry. She also produced a volume that includes two essays by Hamilton students based on original research, something one colleague described as “incredibly rare in our field and which speaks to [her] exemplarity as a teacher-scholar.”
Aaron Strong, associate professor of environmental studies, investigates the human dimension of climate change. He is both a global change ecologist who studies carbon cycle feedbacks in terrestrial and aquatic systems and a sustainability scientist who conducts use-inspired research about the implementation of climate change policies in a way that seeks to move knowledge to action. That commitment involves engaging with policymakers, stakeholders, and communities as they confront sustainability challenges around managing emissions and addressing the impacts of climate change. He is a member of the United Nations Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability Working Group. At Hamilton, his research often involves students, and he serves as the Levitt Center’s director of sustainability and co-leads the Hamilton Sustainability Working Group.
Doran Larson, professor of literature and creative writing, teaches courses in prison writing, witness literatures, and the history of the novel. He spent a decade teaching creative writing inside Attica state prison and also organized two college programs inside New York State prisons. He founded the American Prison Writing Archive, an open-source
collection of first-person narratives by incarcerated individuals and prison workers, that has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mellon Foundation. His work with the archive, which includes thousands of non-fiction works, informed his latest book, Inside Knowledge: Incarcerated People on the Failures of the American Prison, published earlier this year.
Associate Professor of Biology Natalie Nannas investigates how genetic information packaged into chromosomes is segregated when cells divide in meiosis and how this process is safeguarded to prevent miscarriage, infertility, and genetic disorders. Recent work in her lab focused on “selfish” chromosomes in maize, and the findings may have implications for countering climate change’s impact on agriculture. Her papers — often co-authored with student researchers — have appeared in highly regarded scientific journals, and her work is supported by the National Science Foundation. She connects teaching and scholarship using the new genome editing technology CRISPR into her Genes and Genomes course. She also launched a YouTube channel called SciKids Network to build excitement and literacy in STEM among elementary age children.
How Hamilton Leads: Sustainability
ICONSIDER IT A PRIVILEGE to be among the temporary stewards of Hamilton’s storied grounds. Our job in Facilities Management is to guarantee a safe, attractive, and sustainable campus that furthers the College’s mission. At the same time, we work to honor and protect our rich, historic past while ensuring welcoming living/learning spaces for generations to come.
Sustainability is not a guiding principle but rather a core commitment integrated into every aspect of our work. Whether undertaking comprehensive renovations, embarking on new construction, or refining our daily processes, we prioritize sustainability in all we do.
We accomplish this by using institutional and environmental resources responsibly; celebrating the campus’ unique historic character by prioritizing preservation and reusing assets that meaningfully contribute to campus identity; conserving the natural spaces that contribute to the character of the campus and the health of its ecosystems; and advancing the College’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through efficient and sustainable use of natural resources.
That last point is crucial not only for our campus, but for the planet. In the coming months, we plan to make inroads in a number of ways, including:
• Reducing energy demand in Taylor Science Center. While accounting for just 10% of our total square footage, the facility is responsible for 25% of campus energy use. Through targeted initiatives, we aim to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, reducing our overall footprint by nearly 9%.
• Achieving high energy efficiency in our soon-to-be-constructed Innovation Center. Through the use of ground source heat pumps, passive solar heating, low-energy LED fixtures, occupancy sensors, and other sustainable attributes, we will ensure our newest facility is a thoughtful example of sustainable growth.
• Developing plans for electrifying the vehicle fleet on campus. Our Facilities Management team has recently purchased a number of hybrid and fully electric vehicles, as well as electric grounds equipment to usher in a new era of fleet management.
With each present and future initiative, we are committed to protecting our historic campus while advancing sustainability and ensuring a greener future for all.

CARBON NEUTRAL BY 2030
The Hamilton Board of Trustees took a major step toward addressing climate change in March 2022 by approving a new goal for achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, 20 years earlier than the initial target of 2050.
A number of colleges and universities have set similar goals, however, some will rely on purchasing a large number of offsets, which are carbon credits that make up for greenhouse gasses already emitted. While Hamilton will likely need to purchase some offsets to reach the finish line, the College is taking a more aggressive approach by focusing on reducing emissions and offsetting emissions through reforesting campus lands. This requires fundamental changes to how Hamilton operates — from campus infrastructure to processes and human behavior. Doing so will achieve and sustain neutrality for generations to come.
Hamilton’s Sustainability Working Group announced the College’s Sustainability Commitments in April 2023, which included three action plans that outline how Hamilton will reach its goal.
Climate Action Plan
Updated from the College’s previous plan released in 2017, this plan outlines infrastructural investments in renewable energy and transportation, targeted efficiency and conservation measures, improvements in land management, and offset projects as the final step to close any remaining carbon emissions gaps.
Land & Forest Stewardship Plan
This plan implements five guiding principles:
• Promote academic teaching/research opportunities to enhance our educational mission
• Maximize carbon storage and sequestration from our forests and open/agricultural lands
• Protect and expand the health and diversity of native flora and fauna through reforestation, invasive species management, and appropriate silvicultural practices
• Facilitate low-impact recreation and wellness opportunities
• Promote biodiversity and native wildlife populations
Did you know? Hamilton is home to the third most significant reforestation initiative in the state of New York. ?
Sustainability Action Plan
This plan targets certain actions that go beyond carbon emissions, many of which are implementable at the individual level. Included are five key focus areas:
• Create a culture of sustainability on campus
• Advance sustainability across the curriculum
• Manage the College’s buildings, transportation fleet, and energy use
• Manage food and waste
• Make purchasing and procurement more sustainable
OUR PROGRESS
Reducing Emissions
In 2022, the single biggest source of Hamilton’s greenhouse gas emissions — 61% — was burning natural gas to heat buildings. Incorporating geothermal heat pumps, a renewable, efficient energy source utilizing the natural heat stored beneath the Earth’s surface, is already having an effect. Unlike fossil fuels, which emit carbon dioxide when burned for heating or cooling, geothermal energy is renewable and emits minimal greenhouse gasses. In 2023, Hamilton’s net greenhouse gas emissions dropped to their lowest levels to date as inefficient heating systems were replaced. Also related, a 10% drop in emissions from onsite fuel use compared to the previous year occurred as the new systems went online.
Reforestation Efforts
By increasing the number of trees and enhancing the methods used to manage the College’s forests, the process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is improved. This is beneficial for reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, which helps Hamilton mitigate climate change.
Several departments and groups have planted hundreds of native trees on a former agricultural field (known as Tract 11) within the Rogers Forest.
In December 2023, in line with the provisions of the Land & Forest Stewardship Plan, the College began reforestation efforts on a second field (Tract 6) near Rogers Estate.
Student groups/classes and faculty research efforts, including Hamilton’s Experimental Forest Committee, assist with the planning and execution of all reforestation efforts.
HOW HAMILTON STUDENTS HELP
The dozen or so students known as the Hamilton Sustainability Coordinators spearhead academic and cocurricular projects that have a direct impact on the College’s carbon footprint. Working for Hamilton’s Environmental Protection, Safety, and Sustainability Office, coordinators are involved in planning and implementing everything from large-scale sustainability initiatives to community education and outreach. They serve as a bridge between all students and their elected representatives on Student Assembly. Here is a sampling of recent projects and initiatives they have led or on which they have collaborated:
Green Attributes
In 2022, several Hamilton Sustainability Coordinators and summer interns designed the Green Attributes Project, which outlines how the College could use green landscaping as a tool to further Hamilton’s commitment to sustainability. The project reduces Hamilton’s impact on the local environment and showcases the region’s natural beauty.
Adding to the Arboretum
Sustainability interns Betsy Gross ’24 and Adrian Stefan ’24 spent much of the summer of 2023 marking and cataloging the nearly 3,000 trees on campus. Information about each tree’s species, location, and capacity for carbon sequestration was recorded in a digital program called ArborScope for improved viewing and research purposes.
Harvesting for the Mohawk Valley Harvest is a popular student-powered food-salvage program aimed at tackling local food insecurity issues. Harvest managers and Hamilton Sustainability Coordinators spend several hours a week during the semester organizing shifts and volunteer outreach efforts. Last year, the program harvested 9,728 pounds – nearly five tons – of leftover food from the hot lines at Commons and McEwen dining halls and prepared it for eight regional community partners.
Forums and Discussions
Each year, Hamilton Sustainability Coordinators host opportunities to hear others’ perspectives, including the Sustainability Fair held during Fallcoming and Family Weekend. Last year’s event tackled two big questions: “How can we characterize and adapt our cultures of waste management at Hamilton and the broader Clinton and Oneida County community?” and “How do we understand and address cultures of consumerism on the Hill?”
How Hamilton Leads: Community & Belonging
SINCE THE HEIGHT OF THE PANDEMIC, my Student Life colleagues and I have observed shifts in what our students want and need during their time at Hamilton, particularly an even stronger desire for connectedness and belonging. Their experiences in our residence halls are integral to achieving both.
Fostering collaboration and community has guided the design of many new and renovated academic spaces on campus. In the coming years, the College plans to extend this focus to residential living by exploring opportunities to:
• Increase the number of informal, centrally located spaces for bringing people together
• Add more suite and apartment-style housing
• Expand accessibility in more residences
Spaces alone don’t create community; it also takes people, programs, and processes. With that in mind, our team and other colleagues have reimagined how we approach our work and how we can cultivate welcoming and inclusive communities that bring students together in meaningful and creative ways. Before the last academic year, my office changed its name from Residential Life to Community Living to better reflect why we do what we do and our renewed commitment to fostering connections and creating spaces that feel like home.
We’ve also redefined the roles within our team; for instance, Resident Advisors (RAs) are now Community Advisors (CAs) and are no longer expected to serve in an on-call capacity, so they can instead use that time to focus on creating meaningful shared experiences within their own areas.
By creating the necessary living environment, we empower students to learn, grow, and become resilient, self-confident individuals while being surrounded by supportive peers — some of whom will become friends for life. This experience shows them the value of community, equipping them with the skills to develop their own once they leave the Hill.

“A Beacon in Belonging”
Meg Lambert ’27 has found a home — and feels at home — when she’s in front of a microphone.
Lambert is the newest co-host of “Opportunity on the Mic,” a podcast produced by Hamilton’s Opportunity Programs (OP) that celebrates the OP community and highlights its rich history and ongoing impact. The mostly interview-style podcast gives guests a space to share their stories.
“I didn’t think a podcast could feel like a home — no matter who you are or where you are. You can create a space for yourself and the people who are like you,” she said. “[Guests] leave feeling empowered, which is what we really want people to feel.”
Director of Opportunity Programs Aaron Ray and Kelvin Nuñez ’24 started the podcast in February 2023 to give people a voice and dispel misconceptions about the program. Since then, more than 35 episodes have been released.
“There are people who feel like [OP] is a diversity program. We are a highly diverse program, but that’s more of a reflection on capitalism than on the intentions of our program,” Ray said. “When I arrived, I got the sense that people didn’t necessarily know about our program, how it operates, or why it exists. Sitting down with Kelvin [and] reflecting on his experiences with people not understanding what OP was is how this podcast was born.”
According to Nuñez, the podcast’s value “comes from amplifying our community” and making “people feel that they are not alone in their experiences, doubts, or questions.” It has become a “beacon in belonging.”
“It represents where we want to end up — that is, in a place where these conversations about who we are and what we do are happening all the time and outside of the podcast room as well,” he said.
Director of Opportunity Programs
Aaron Ray with a student in the Phyllis A.H. Breland Center for Academic Success
“Opportunity on the Mic” has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and thanks to Ray’s partnership with social media and other online communities, its reach extends beyond campus.
“[Comments] were from people who worked in opportunity programs statewide and who were champions for it,” Nuñez said.
“It just touched my heart that we’re not only doing this for people on Hamilton’s campus, we could also be influencing other opportunity programs to have their own platform and their own voice to touch on their own histories.”
Hamilton’s OP is not only a leader in access and opportunity on the airwaves, but through its programs and advising initiatives. The OP recently received its largest ever HEOP grant — more than $3.1 million over five years — from the New York State Department of Education. According to Ray, it’s a competitive process and funding is not guaranteed.
“Because of [connections with] various departments around campus, we’ve been able to build a strong and comprehensive program that far exceeds the expectations of the state,” Ray said. “When it came to submitting our proposal, I had great support from folks from almost every division … It was a true team effort to secure this funding, just like it is a full team effort to support this program on campus.”
WHAT MAKES HAMILTON’S OP STAND OUT
Hamilton’s Opportunity Programs provide access to select, promising high school students whose circumstances would otherwise prevent them from attending Hamilton. All students offered admission through the OP have demonstrated academic competitiveness, leadership, initiative, and the potential for success in Hamilton’s rigorous academic environment, with support.
Quick Facts
• OP is one of the oldest student support networks at Hamilton.
• There are approximately 160 students in the OP with 35-40 new students enrolling each year.
• Hamilton’s OP consists of two programs:
1. Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) was established in 1969 by the New York State Legislature to help students access private colleges and universities in the state. Hamilton was among the first colleges to join.
Listen and subscribe to “Opportunity on the Mic”
2. Hamilton Scholars Program was established in 1971 and supports students who are ineligible for HEOP due to residency outside New York or exceeding income guidelines. It is funded entirely by Hamilton, and the College is among a small number of private institutions in New York to offer such a program.
• OP is part of ALEX (Advise, Learn, EXperience), Hamilton’s coordinated network of on-campus academic centers, resources, and advisors.
Summer Program
The intensive and comprehensive five-week residential program begins each year in June and introduces students to college-level work through courses taught by Hamilton faculty members. It helps students create a sense of community by providing opportunities for enrichment, camaraderie, and civic engagement through planned excursions. By accepting the offer to attend Hamilton via the OP, students are immediately enrolled at no cost.
Advising
In addition to the three advisors that every Hamilton student is assigned when they arrive on College Hill — a faculty advisor, a
career advisor, and an ALEX advisor — students are also assigned an OP advisor who supports them throughout their journey.
Phyllis A. H. Breland Center for Academic Success
This space near the OP office provides students with a collaborative and quiet space to study, relax, and be in community with each other.
Tutoring
Through strategic partnerships with the Writing Center, Oral Communication Center, and Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning Center, students have access to both one-on-one and groupfacilitated tutoring.
Financial Assistance
Students receive financial aid that meets 100% of their demonstrated financial need. Students in good standing also have the cost of their books and academic supplies covered. There are funds available to help students cover unexpected emergencies.
Portions of this piece were derived from stories written by Alejandro Sosa Hernández ’26 and Holly Foster.
How Hamilton Leads: Active Citizenship
THE APPEAL OF ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP, a key element of Hamilton’s mission, has always been strong among the College’s students and alumni. The long list of graduates who led movements for change includes Gerrit Smith, Class of 1818, a prominent abolitionist and financier of Freedmen voting rights, and Mary Bonauto ’83, whose argument before the U.S. Supreme Court established the right to same-sex marriage. Each generation of Hamiltonians has produced ambassadors, members of Congress, and elected and appointed officials in state and local government. The spirit that animated these active citizens is evident today in more than a dozen clubs and organizations formed by students to engage with international affairs, domestic partisan politics, racial equity, and climate justice.
While the obvious place to look for courses that motivate students toward public service is the Government Department — which includes concentrations in world politics and public policy and the Program in Washington, D.C. — there’s a lot more throughout the curriculum. The Environmental Studies Program and the Economics and Philosophy departments offer courses that draw students into the challenges facing the United States and humanity in general. This is not to neglect the way that
courses in the humanities and arts engage students with historical and contemporary moral and ethical issues; Ambassador Sol Linowitz ’35, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, was a German and philosophy major.
The tradition of the liberal arts in service to the greater good has marked our history as an institution. It is a tradition that Hamilton sustains and which, in turn, sustains the College.
FRANK ANECHIARICO ’71
Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law Director, Levitt Public Affairs Center
One way that Hamilton prepares students to effect positive change in the world is by providing abundant opportunities for leadership, advocacy, and service. Here are just a few examples:
COMMON GROUND
Hamilton’s widely acclaimed program brings to campus highly respected thought leaders who engage in discussion that explores cross-boundary political thought and complex social issues. Common Ground speakers visit classes for small-group discussions where students can ask questions and explore different perspectives, all while articulating and formulating their own viewpoints on pressing issues. Speakers also take center stage for presentations that feature balance and inclusion of differing viewpoints, where they model the kind of respectful dialogue that should occur throughout our communities.
ARTHUR LEVITT PUBLIC AFFAIRS CENTER
For more than 40 years, the Levitt Center has served as a hub for student change-makers interested in combining academic knowledge with practical skills to address persistent social problems in innovative and ethical ways. Among its many programs are:
Justice Lab
The Justice Lab pairs the study of societal challenges with the application of these concepts in a local context. During the semester, 12-16 students take integrated courses, including an internship, field study, and research project. Past programs have ranged from community health and wellness, to immigration and asylum. The topic for this fall is Justice and Safety: Responses to Gun Violence.
Summer Research Fellows
Each summer several dozen students work individually or in small groups, along with a faculty advisor, to investigate a public affairs question of their choosing. Recent topics have ranged from “Understanding the Impact of Removing Single-Family Zoning on Housing Affordability, Neighborhood Demographics, and Urban Development in Minneapolis” to “Rural Responses to Climate Change in Upstate New York: Renewables, Agriculture, and the (Im)possible.”
Levitt Leadership Institute
The Levitt Leadership Institute promotes students’ understandings of the relationship between mobilizing people and developing social policy. Its mission is to help students recognize, develop, and practice the kinds of leadership skills and ways of being a leader that are essential for creating personal and societal changes in the current historical moment.
Social Innovation Fellows
Students whose aim is to apply innovative approaches to address persistent social problems attend an intensive workshop during spring break and may later choose to join an innovation fellows cohort, participate in additional training, and apply for funding to implement their ideas.
Digital Human Rights Investigations Project
Students are trained to use open-source digital media to investigate and document human rights violations worldwide. Research based on open-source intelligence is being pioneered by nonprofits and academic institutions internationally to improve transparency and fact-checking of investigative journalism and to strengthen legal cases in the area of international human rights.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Through direct service volunteering, internships, philanthropy, awareness, and fundraising initiatives, Hamilton students make lasting contributions to the well-being of the off-campus community.
Alternative Spring Break
Every year more than 100 Hamilton students spend a week of their spring break volunteering at nonprofit organizations. Student leaders plan the trips and assume responsibility for their success.
Community Opportunity & Outreach Project (COOP)
The COOP connects students with Oneida County nonprofit agencies, creating positive change for community partners as well as educational experiences for students. Examples include tutoring programs such as Hamilton Reads and SAT Prep; serving as mentors with Strong Girls and the Midtown Utica Community Center (MUCC); and Harvest food recovery.
Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach, and Charity (HAVOC)
HAVOC offers numerous direct community service opportunities in various fields such as education, animal care, and rehabilitation centers. Fundraising initiatives like bake sales, dodgeball tournaments, and holiday giving trees support a range of causes and organizations. Events include Make A Difference Day and MLK, Jr. Day of Service, where over 200 Hamilton students dedicate a Saturday afternoon to volunteering at a HAVOC site, and a campus favorite, Paws to Relax that brings pets to campus during finals week to help students destress while simultaneously helping support a local animal shelter.
I find it refreshing to hear from successful people having important conversations. Particularly, this year’s events on climate change policy were really fascinating, because it took what I was learning in the classroom and brought it to life.”

How Hamilton Leads: Alumni Contributions
THE THEME OF THIS YEAR’S IMPACT REPORT IS LEADERSHIP, and nowhere is that more evident than among our alumni. Hamiltonians go on to do great things in their professions and communities, and the dedication they have for their alma mater runs deep. As volunteers, advocates, and donors, alumni take on leadership roles to ensure that future generations of students have access to the life-changing experiences that a Hamilton education offers.
Extra special thanks to the following:
n Hamilton’s Board of Trustees, who are always ready to partner in ways supporting people, programs, and places on the Hill.
n Hamilton’s Alumni Council numbers about 130 extraordinary volunteers, making it the most statistically representative body among our peer colleges.
n Class leadership — including our dedicated class presidents, class correspondents, and gift chairs — encourage engagement within their respective class.
n The Hamilton Career Network includes graduates who help current students and fellow alumni by providing internships, job opportunities, career information, advice, and mentorship.
n The Nominations Committee recommends nominees for alumni trustee and selects individuals to be recognized for their service to Hamilton.
n Regional Affairs volunteers, including chairs of major regional Alumni Associations and ambassadors who represent small regional alumni groups, connect Hamiltonians in the U.S. and abroad.
n The Equity & Inclusion Committee promotes equitable and inclusive policies and practices throughout the committees and structure of the Alumni Council, and establishes concrete ways to apply these principles across Alumni Association activities.
n Alumni groups connect and identify based on common interests/affiliation, providing alumni with the opportunity to celebrate their commonalities and deepen their ties to each other and to the College. Groups include Multicultural Alumni Relations Committee (MARC) and Kirkland alumnae.
n The 1812 Leadership Circle recognizes our most dedicated donors — those who make an annual gift of $2,500 or more to the Hamilton Fund (with introductory giving amounts available for young alumni). More than 1,000 alumni, parents, and friends participate.
n More than 200 alumni and parents provide the foundation for our fundraising success by sharing their time, networks, and talents to generate support for the Hamilton Annual Fund.
n To date, 1,500 donors make up the Chapel Bell Society, which recognizes alumni, parents, and friends who establish monthly automatic recurring contributions. About one in five donors now give this way, providing for loyal and continuous support.

CREATING A LIFELONG COMMUNITY
Hamilton’s loyal and engaged alumni network stands out among those at similar institutions because, among many things, graduates have an eagerness to give their time and expertise to support students and each other.
Members of Hamilton’s Multicultural Alumni Relations Committee (MARC) recently illustrated that by launching Enlace, a network that connects alumni and students who identify as people of color so that they can share ideas and experience. The group hosts virtual and in-person events throughout the year.
During the initiative’s launch party at Reunions 2023, then-MARC Chair Jazmin Gatto de Torres ’02 said, “Our goal is to create a Hamilton institution that provides a place for current students and alumni, along the entire continuum of life, to build and maintain meaningful relationships that are mutually beneficial to all members’ personal and professional lives.”

How Hamilton Leads: By the Numbers
TOTAL COMMITMENTS RECEIVED OVER THE LAST TEN FISCAL YEARS
The Hamilton community has raised the bar for philanthropic commitments over the last six fiscal years. The 10-year average now exceeds even the highest fundraising totals from any single fiscal year prior to 2019. This new standard was maintained, providing crucial resources for the future even after the conclusion of the Because Hamilton campaign in fiscal year 2024.
A LEGACY OF PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT
Philanthropic impact on Hamilton builds over a donor’s lifetime, reaching its peak approaching and extending beyond the 50th reunion. The nature of commitments evolves over time as well,
with endowed fund and facilities support increasing. Estate giving extends this legacy in perpetuity, with impact equal to entire decades of alumni. Parents, friends, and foundation & corporate support demonstrate the strength of Hamilton’s community.
DOCUMENTED ESTATE PLANS BY REUNION DECADE
Hamilton began counting documented estate plans in fundraising totals during Because Hamilton. Classes through the 1970s have documented $83.5M in plans. There is still significant
opportunity for philanthropic impact by documenting plans with Hamilton, with many Joel Bristol Associates members having included the College in their plans but not documented amounts. Knowing these plans helps the College and donor plan to maximize the impact of this support and acknowledge the donor's legacy intention.

NUMBER OF ENDOWED FUNDS FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP AID OVER TIME
The number of endowed funds for scholarship aid has grown steadily since 1980, with faster growth following the College’s decision in 2010 to become need-blind in admission and the public launch of the Because Hamilton campaign in 2018. The 675 endowed funds for financial aid provide support for 727 students in academic year 2023-24.

GIFTS AND GRANTS RECEIVED FOR FINANCIAL AID SINCE HAMILTON BECAME NEED-BLIND
Alumni, parents, and friends have contributed $166M for financial aid since Hamilton announced in 2010 that it would become need-blind in admission. The pace quickened with the launch of the Because Hamilton campaign in 2018 and the announcement of the MacLennan match in 2020. Financial aid was the top priority for Because Hamilton, with the $120M goal met and surpassed.
TEN YEARS OF ATHLETICS SUPPORT
Athletics at Hamilton has seen a trend of increasing philanthropic support over the last 10 fiscal years. This support spiked in fiscal year 2024 with support for critical athletic facilities projects.
TEN YEARS OF 50TH REUNIONS

INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE
1 ENDOWED FUND for German studies
3 KIRKLAND campus enhancement projects
8 CLASS endowed scholarships
As of June 30th, 2023, Hamilton’s investment performance was strong across multiple horizons. Over the medium and longer term, Hamilton’s endowment performed above median versus peer endowments, as measured by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), a membership organization representing approximately 650 U.S. colleges and universities.
ENDOWMENT GROWTH WITH AND WITHOUT ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS
The value of the endowment is about $1.3 billion as shown by its market value since 1989 (dark blue). If no new gifts had been added to the endowment and allowed to compound since that time, the fund's current value would be just over $700 million (bright blue).
MARKET VALUE OF ENDOWED FUNDS FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP AID
New gifts and prudent investment of existing funds have resulted in a market value of more than a half billion dollars of endowment for student scholarship aid. The income earned from these funds is used to award financial aid to students.
CAREER PREPARATION

SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES
More than half of the Class of 2023 secured jobs in finance, science and technology, business management, education, or consulting following graduation. Nearly a quarter of the students pursuing graduate degrees are doing so in science or math.
How Hamilton Leads: Onward
FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, only a few colleges and universities are preparing graduates to navigate change, to imagine different worlds, and to inspire people to work toward new visions of humankind. These are places that possess both the intellectual courage and the intellectual humility to have an out-sized impact on the world.
Hamilton is one of those colleges. Its entire purpose and culture are organized around the power of a liberal arts education and its pledge to prepare students for active citizenship. Democracy depends on places like Hamilton not only to be successful, but to be true influencers through the work of their students, faculty, graduates, and staff.
I believe in participatory leadership to create a shared vision for Hamilton’s future, one that is consistent with our traditional values and unique to our place in higher education. Aligning this college with society’s need for leadership, innovation, creativity, and new knowledge for the next 50 years will be an exciting thing to work on with all of you.
Together, let’s continue making Hamilton one of the most amazing places to evolve the human brain and connect it to the
ethical concerns of our time. I have every confidence that our students and graduates will continue to lead and thrive, so that with your support and collaboration and ideas we’ll make Hamilton everything it needs to be for the next 50 years and beyond.
Onward!
