Mark your calendars for our Books Build Bridges events with well-known authors Kelly Yang and Jamie Ford. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with these authors and their unique stories. Our Fall Maker-in-Residence in our Ignite Studio is fiber artist and weaver, Megan Benson, and you can even try your hand at weaving using Ignite’s new community loom, funded through a grant from the Fishers Arts and Culture Commission. There are so many great events and opportunities to choose from over the next few months here at HEPL, and we hope to see you here!

The featured books this year are Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford and Front Desk by Kelly Yang. These novels tackle tough topics like racism, bullying, and discrimination in powerful, poignant, and age-appropriate ways. Join our community in reading, participating in book discussions, and meeting the award-winning authors.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Jamie Ford is the award-winning author of the bestselling novel Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, which was awarded the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature and was on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. Ford’s second novel, Songs of Willow Frost, was also a New York Times best seller, and as with its predecessor, has also been a favorite among community reading programs. Ford is an alumnus of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers and of Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp. Having grown up near Seattle’s Chinatown, he now lives in Montana with his wife and children.
Kelly Yang is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of New From Here, the Front Desk series, including Front Desk, Three Keys, and Room To Dream. She is also the author of the picture book, Yes We Will, and young adult novels Parachutes and Private Label. Front Desk is Kelly’s award-winning middle grade debut novel about a 10-year-old Chinese American immigrant girl who manages the front desk of a motel while her parents clean the rooms.
WRITE TO THE AUTHOR In the book Front Desk, Mia Tang loves practicing her writing by composing letters. We are encouraging Books Build Bridges participants to visit our letter writing stations at either library and write a letter to Front Desk author Kelly Yang by answering this question: How do you use your voice to stand up for what you believe in? We will give these letters to Kelly Yang on the day of her author visit.

Jamie Ford is the award-winning author of the bestselling novel Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, which was awarded the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature and was on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. In the opening pages of Jamie Ford’s stunning debut novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol. This simple act takes old Henry Lee back to the 1940s, at the height of the war, when young Henry’s world is a jumble of confusion and excitement, and to his father, who is obsessed with the war in China and having Henry grow up American. While “scholarshipping” at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, where the white kids ignore him, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship–and innocent love– that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept. Jamie Ford is the great-grandson of Nevada mining pioneer Min Chung, who emigrated from Kaiping, China, to San Francisco in 1865, where he adopted the Western name “Ford,” thus confusing countless generations. Ford is an award-winning short-story writer, an alumnus of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and a survivor of Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp. Having grown up near Seattle’s Chinatown, he now lives in Montana with his wife and children. Discover Guide

Fall 2022 Maker-in-Residence:
Megan Benson
Ignite Studio welcomes our next Maker-in-Residence, Megan Benson. Visit Ignite Studio September – December 2022 to meet her! As a fiber artist and weaver, Megan’s work blends the traditional structures with unconventional techniques through embellishment and deconstructions. The passage of time, difficult life phases, and the perceived permanence/impermanence of life is explored though the labor-intensive construction of a weaving, thread by thread. She weaves on an heirloom Harrisville four-harness loom that originally belonged to her husband’s grandmother. Q: A:
What is your favorite art tool/supply? I love fat wool roving (wool before it is spun into yarn). It is squishy, soft and smooth. Aesthetically I love the look and feel of it. I haven’t used it a whole lot in my work to this point, but I do have a plan for a large piece to construct during my residency.
Q: A:
Where do you draw artistic inspiration from? I often look to traditional, American colonial-era textiles as a starting-off point and am inspired by whatever I’m experiencing in life, social issues, music, family dynamics, etc. to explore new directions and create something unique.
Q: A:
Who are some of your favorite artists? I love the work of contemporary weaver Diedrick Brackens. Other artists whom I admire right now are: Yvette Mayorga, Jordan Nassar, and Nick Cave. Of course, I look to Anni Albers and Sheila Hicks as greats in the realm of fiber arts.
Q: A:
What kinds of things will you be doing during your residency in Ignite? During my residency, my main focus will be exploring some large scale projects as well as creating a new collection of work. I will be constructing large frame looms that I will weave upon and to be used for a community weaving project. I will design a piece with input from Ignite patrons that will be available during drop-in studio times to be woven on by the community. I will also teach a range of workshops.
Q: A:
What art accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of receiving the Indiana Arts Commission’s On-Ramp Fellowship in 2018. The On-Ramp program experience helped me to grow in my confidence as an artist as well as establish my business. I highly recommend it to all artists!
Q: A:
What else do you want the HEPL community to know about you? I have taught a sewing class for clients of Exodus Refugee Immigration for the last four years. I love teaching and sharing my knowledge of textiles. I am super excited to work with the HEPL community and want to introduce weaving to any and everyone with an interest. Discover Guide
