4 Cozy Winter Reading

Edra Waterman A lot is happening at HEPL as we move from Winter into Spring! While it’s cold outside, consider taking advantage of our wide range of resources to develop your skills. The library has tools for everyone to learn and explore, from computer literacy to financial literacy. Also, keep in mind that you can pick up your holds without even leaving your car with our curbside pickup option. While construction continues on our buildings and entrances, watch for the opportunity through our Ignite Studio to connect with the artisans creating some public art to be installed at Fishers. The seed library will reopen, and I think we are all looking forward to spending some quality time outdoors. Whether you stop by HEPL in person or online, we are always glad to connect.

y z o C Winter Reading Program By Lori Holewinski

Hamilton East Public Library’s annual Cozy Winter Reading Program runs from February 1-28, 2022. This program gives readers of all ages an incentive to stay cozy and read during this cold winter month.

Prizes

Some benefits adults reap from reading for fun: • fewer feelings of stress and depression than non-readers • stronger feelings of relaxation • higher levels of self-esteem • greater ability to cope with difficult situations • feeling closer to their friends and to their community The 7th edition of the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report found that a significant percentage of kids ages 6-17 read for fun 1-4 days a week. What are some reasons kids and teens give for recreational reading? • to explore places and worlds they have never been • to read about topics they want to become familiar with • to help them imagine and understand other people’s lives The Cleveland Clinic recommends reading to babies and toddlers for at least a few minutes each day, whether at a longer bedtime reading session or several shorter reading breaks each day. Readers of all ages who log pages each week will be entered into a weekly drawing for gift cards to local businesses and other prizes. Babies through teens will select their reward at either library, while adults will direct their e-ticket toward the prize bundle of their choice in a final drawing.

Celebrate

Reading is rewarding in so many ways. What will you gain by reading during February?

SPROU TI TUESD NG MARC AY, H 1ST

During the icy chill of late winter, we long for the tentative warmth of early spring and the opening of the 2022 HEPL Seed Library on March 1! In 2021, HEPL lent more than 55,000 seed packets. That’s more than double what was handed out in 2020! It also means many thousands more flowers are blooming in our communities and thousands more vegetables and herbs are on our tables.

HOW IT

works

1. LOOK UP

We’ve enjoyed supporting your gardening adventure with seeds, educational programs, Gardening with Kathy help videos, and more. Gardening is also a great family activity! One of our users told us, “Thank you for continuing this program. It is truly enriching and has been a great way to get my kids interested in growing from seed.”

Research to see which seeds are right for you! Use the Planting Guides as a resource to help.

What will 2022 bring? You’ll see 30+ new varieties, including the fairytale-like heirloom Musquee de Provence pumpkin, cumin, Rosa Bianca eggplant, Chaubaud carnations, Red Kuri squash, Windsor fava beans, New Zealand spinach, and five sunflower varieties. Never fear: we’ll bring back many of your old favorites too: sweet Thai basil, zinnias, Bright Lights Swiss chard, Kentucky Wonder beans, nigella, yellow pear tomatoes, and many more.

2. PICK UP

We also encourage everyone to try native plants! Our local Seed Library users have told us how important this is to our communities. These plants may take a little longer to become established, but just one or two varieties in your yard can make a difference in supporting birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects. You’ll now find three kinds of milkweed, great blue lobelia, and Joe Pye weed in the Seed Library as well as returning varieties like black-eyed Susans, bee balm, and plains coreopsis.

3. PLANT IT

Watch for more information in HEPL’s Bright Ideas email newsletter, visit the Seed Library webpage, check HEPL’s social media, or email us for more information at seedlibrary@hepl.lib.in.us.

4. SHARE IT
