Synopsis For my eTelecollaborative Project, I have worked to find opportunities to implement small projects that involve collaborative activities using technology between two college classes. The rationale for this is twofold: give college students an experience that will satisfy learning goals and outcomes for the class while helping them to develop 21st century skills and provide opportunities for my experience in integrating eTelecollaborative activities in the classroom. This experience will build my skill set for the larger Global Learning Project I will implement in a graduate college class in which I have access through the cooperation of the professor teaching the course. My current plan is to partner with an all African American male freshman year experience class, through the African American Male Initiative at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock (UALR). At my institution, the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), an all African American male University Studies class will also be taught by an instructor. African American males are currently lowest in enrolling and graduating (Nealy, 2009, para. 8). The idea is to have students in both of these classes collaborate with each other on a blog and a wiki asynchronously. Blogs have tremendous potential for impact on students especially in the area of positive relationships and constructing new knowledge which are major aims of my eTelecollaborative projects. Dr. Felix (2008) lists all of the benefits of blogging for both students and instructors in the article “Blogging to Improve Instruction for Digital Age Students.” If we have time, it will be wonderful at the end of the semester to have both classes meet each other using videoconferencing rooms both institutions have available. Current Status: I have an agreement with UALR to be involved with this project but I am waiting on the instructor here at UCA to confirm. If it is not possible to have the UCA instructor’s class participate, my back up plan is to have my coed University Studies class participate in the projects. I
3
have to meet with all parties involved to decide and shape the project objectives/learning outcomes, assessments and learning plan. What you see below is rough ideas. Completion: I was able to complete the blogging part of the eTelecollaborative project as planned with UALR and UCA but not the wiki portion. However, the focus had to be shifted from African American males to just males because the UNIV 1100 class at UCA was not limited to African Americans which was a last minute decision that was not communicated to the instructor I was working with at UCA. Due to time limitations, the UCA instructor introduced me to the African American Male Initiative program coordinator at Pulaski Tech University in Little Rock, AR. He was very interested in having a wiki project in conjunction with UCA’s all male class during this past spring semester. However, while a plan was in the works for a second project, it did not come to fruition because of the UCA instructor’s limited time this past spring semester of 2011, UCA deciding not to hold an all-male class section this Spring, my limited time with co-teaching and my younger brother’s death. While everything was not completed, future possibilities for an inter-institutional project are tremendous for institutions where there is an already established African American Male Initiative program. Because there are research possibilities, peer mentoring/support and creating a model that could be funded by grants, I would be excited about continuing to facilitate these types of projects so that it continues to grow. Opportunities to do so have increased with my spouse now being employed at Philander Smith College, a historically black college, in Little Rock, AR.

Implementation Using Backward Design Desired Results Established Goals and Learning Objectives for the Courses: University Studies at UCA Course Goals: This course is designed to help students become successful at the collegiate level and in their personal lives. There are two primary goals: 1. Empower students to become learners at the collegiate level. 2. Empower students to develop a realistic sense of themselves as healthy and intelligent people who have the tools to learn, grow and become successful citizens in the university and in the community where they live. University Studies Course Objectives (I have modified these slightly): 1. Identify and effectively utilize all student support services available to them as a UCA student. 2. Locate, critically evaluate, collect, and synthesize credible information available for their learning in this course and beyond. 3. Decide on possible major course of studies by discovering, articulating and analyzing their personal strengths, career interests and goals. 4. Demonstrate improvement in written and oral communication skills by effectively utilizing skills in exercises such as debates and digital writing assignments worthy of publishing online. 5. Become contributing members of UCA's community by satisfactorily completing collaboration activities that contribute value to the UCA community. 6. Apply strategies that increase academic success in collegiate studies, i.e. time management, note taking system, test preparation. 7. Attend and objectively assess the value of cultural events presented by college students and/or faculty and staff to the campus community by attending three events out of their comfort zone. 8. Demonstrate responsibility for individual learning and achievement through satisfactory completion of all assignments in this course.
Freshman Year Experience at UALR Course Goals: 1. Assists students in reaching their educational objectives 2. Promote the development of critical thinking skills and positive educational values Freshman Year Experience Course Objectives: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Awareness of university Active involvement in the community Sense of academic community and belonging Awareness of the learning partnership 5
5. Preparation for the future 6. Strategic Planning for personal development and growth Blog Project Objectives/Outcomes: 1. Learn how reflection of experiences contributes to effectiveness as an individual/peer and for any project an individual/team is involved. 2. How to reflect and assess a situation. 3. How to apply the results of reflection and assessment to improve. 4. Knowledge of blogs and the purposes and uses of a blog. Wiki Project Objectives/Outcomes: 1. How to reflect and assess a situation. 2. Knowledge of the value of networks and positive relationships in the contribution to the positive growth of an overall community. 3. How to network and understand the value of peer support and experience in a constructive manner. 4. Knowledge of wikis and the purposes and uses of a wiki.
Understandings: Students will understand that‌ Through reflection and collaboration, they can minimize possible negative effects of the transition into a collegiate life such as feelings of isolation, powerlessness, and lack of support. (Objectives: UCA-1,8 ; UALR-2, 3, 4) Their experiences, knowledge, skills, values and beliefs can have a positive impact on others and contribute to the well-being and effectiveness of the university and surrounding community of which they are now a part. (Objectives: UCA-5 ;UALR-2,3) The skills they are utilizing in the projects will contribute to the skill set they need for success in both their collegiate careers and the workforce. (Objectives: UCA-2,3 ;UALR-5)
Essential Questions: Can my involvement with a team or community truly create sustainable change within myself and the community I belong? How can knowledge of my experiences help others? How do I apply what I’ve learned to create the change I seek or to support efforts of change in myself and the community? How can the skills I build in this class help me in my career? 6
Students will know…
Learn a new skill they will have to use in other college classes and learn how to use blogs to express their thoughts and opinions in a collegiate manner.
Students will be able to…
Improve their writing skills. Communicate with other college freshmen men and find out if they have similar or different experiences on two different college campuses. Have an opportunity to make new friends who are going through some of the same things they are going through. Let the world know what it is like to be a college freshman male.
Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks (summative assessments): Blogging Project: The task below was given to each student. In Appendix A, you will find the handout that was given to each student at both UALR and UCA. The instructor at UALR wanted to have a specific question to give the students as a writing prompt for the post. The questions that were agreed upon by both instructors as a writing prompt for the first blog post were: 1. How was your first 9 weeks at UCA or UALR? 2. What has been the biggest surprise? Why? 3. Will you change any of your behaviors in regards to your approach to college as you are moving to towards the end of your first semester? If you will not change anything, why not? What's working for you? 4. If you stated above that you will make changes in your approach to college, how will this change or changes be beneficial to your success at UCA or UALR? 5. What can UCA do to help you be more successful in college? Or is UCA or UALR doing a good job of providing you with the resources to be successful in college? If so, provide examples. You will have to write a minimum of two posts (500 words minimum each) and a minimum of two comments on another student’s post (not from your university). The comment has to be posted no longer than 7 days from the date of the student’s post. We will give you the deadlines you have to post your first post and your second post. However, if you choose to post and comment more between those two dates, please feel free to do so. Essentially, your first post will be a reflection of the first half of the semester and the second blog post will be a re-flection of the last half or whole semester.
7
Other Evidence (formative assessments): A rubric was used to grade the posts. The score was only a part of the grade for the whole class. The rubric can be viewed in Appendix A in the handout that was given to the students. Performance Tasks (summative assessments): Wiki Project: The following would have been the general performance tasks of the project but details are not defined since the project was not completed: Both classes would contribute content such as tips for first year college male students. The content would be from their perspective. This wiki would be added to each year by new classes and become a growing resource for other college males in other college institutions. Other Evidence (formative assessments): A rubric would be used to grade the content. Students would assess each other on the performance of the roles assigned in the project such as editor or writer.

Student Reactions Reaction to the blogging project was not enthusiastic on the surface for either class because they looked at it as “more work.” However, the UALR class, from observations from the UALR instructor, really did see the value of the blog at the end of the project. Some of the students expressed how the writing helped them to therapeutically frame their transitions to college and that they valued being able to help others by expressing their experiences. This is reflected in their work on the blog. Unfortunately, UCA’s class did not grasp the value of the experience or the project. Almost all of the students reacted very negatively to the project. I only had one student who completed a blog post from this class. I spoke with the instructor and it seems this was not isolated to the project. They reacted negatively to all of the assignments for the class and the class itself. This all male class was the first time the section was created. Instead of opting into the class, many of the students were assigned to that section, which caused resentment. UNIV 1100 as a course already suffers from a poor image due to the fact that only University College students (students who are academically unprepared for full University admission as reflected by their standardized test scores) are the only students who are required to take the course. The course does not count towards the overall credits for a Bachelor degree but in order to be fully admitted to the University, they have to pass the course. The all-male section initiative compounded these inherent problems. It was the first time this instructor (who was often voted one of the best instructors in the University by students) could not successfully teach the class. Students frequently refused to complete the work. The contrast between the UALR class and UCA class is striking and I believe it is because of several reasons. The UALR students are fully admitted students who are more academically prepared for college but are high risk for dropping out of college. They choose to participate in the African
10
American Male Initiative program and the course does count toward their overall degree credits. The course is designed to provide them support focused on their special needs with trained instructors who understand those special needs. Assessment and evaluation of the classes and program are done every semester. After this experience I realized that if I were to complete a project like this again that I would have to match up classes that had the same elements for it to be successful. However, provided that the classes are well matched, I think these types of projects could really improve the transition experience for high risk college students.

HANDOUT TO STUDENTS FOR BLOGGING PROJECT

Blogging for Class Created by Jeannine Hamilton, Coordinator of Technology Integration and Program Development, Academic Outreach, University of Central Arkansas, Jeannine@uca.edu
In this class project, two classes going to collaboratively work on a blog-- an all-male freshman class at the University of Central Arkansas and an all-male freshmen class at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Purpose of the project
Learn a new skill you will have to use in other college classes and learn how to use this medium to express your thoughts and opinions in a collegiate manner. Improve your writing skills. Communicate with other college freshmen men and find out if you have similar or different experiences on two different college campuses. Great opportunity to make new friends who are going through some of the same things you are going through. Great way to let the world know what it is like to be a college freshman male.
What is a blog? The word blog is a blend of “web log.” It is an editable website that some use as a reflective diary and others use to share important information about a topic.
Main components of a blog Navigation- usually on the right or left of the blog and usually has a way for you to click on a category of topics which lists several blog posts related to that category. Has other useful tools as well but finding which posts interest you is the bare minimum. Posts- posts dated are “log” entries about a particular topic. Each post is usually only 300-500 words. Since you will not have to post too many times, we will expect a minimum of 500 words. Comments- most blogs allow comments on the posts, which is located below the posts. This allows for a conversation which some feel is the most valuable feature of a blog. In the blog you are going to be working on, we will be allowing comments from other students that are part of the project.
Requirements for this project You will have to write a minimum of two posts and a minimum of two comments on another student’s post (not from your university). The comment has to be posted no longer than 7 days from the date of the student’s post. We will give you the deadlines you have to post your first post and your second post. However, if you choose to post and comment more between those two dates, please feel free to do so. Essentially, your first post will be a reflection of the first half of the semester and the second blog post will be a reflection of the last half or whole semester.
How to write a post? First step is to log into the blog. You can log in to the blog with your username and password at the home page of the blog at http://arcollegeview.edublogs.org . Look under the Meta menu and you will see login. You will see the dashboard of the blog. It will be on the advanced version of the dashboard. You will need to click the “Activate Easy Admin” button each time you login and come to the dashboard. The Easy Admin is much easier to use.
To add a post, you will see “New Posts” tab and Add New Post in large letters below that. The first field is where you type the title of your post. Sometimes it’s easier to come up with the body of your post first before the title and then after you are finished with the body, you know what to call your post.
Tool Bar
You can use the tool bar to bold text or italize it, add hyperlinks or add media. Only add media you have permission to use because of copyright laws and make sure you cite the source of where it came from.
Once you have finished creating the title and the body of the post, you will need to publish the post. The blue publish button on the right of the body of the post. Click the button. You have now completed your post!
If you notice a mistake or you want to add something else, you can go back to the post and edit it. You would do this by clicking on the tab, My Posts. Click the hyperlinked title of the post. You can now edit the text in the title or body of the post. NOTE: don’t click the small edit button at the top next to the link for the post. This edit button is to edit the link itself and not the post. Once you have finished making your changes, click the small blue button “Update Post” in the top right corner.
To add a comment to a blog post, you just click on the word No Comments or 1 Comment, etc. Once clicked, a box will open and you can type in a comment and then click “Submit. You have to be logged in to leave a comment.

Purpose (2010-09-09 15:05) This blog is a class project between two college classes that have their own experiences and views of college life as a freshman– from the male perspective. The instructors hope that both the students and the public learn more about themselves, each other, and the power of communication. This blog is a space for two groups of male college students to communicate about both the differences and similarities of their experiences as college freshmen on two different college campuses. If you have questions about this blog, please direct them to the following people: Jeannine Hamilton, Coordinator of Technology Integration and Program Development, Academic Outreach, University of Central Arkansas- [1]jeannine@uca.edu Adriian Gardner, Lecturer, University College, University of Central Arkansas - [2]agardner@uca.edu Harvell Howard, African American Male Initiative/TEAMS Coordinator, University of Arkansas at Little Rock - [3]hlhoward@ualr.edu 1. mailto:jeannine@uca.edu 2. mailto:agardner@uca.edu 3. mailto:hlhoward@ualr.edu

My first weeks at college?- UCA (2010-11-04 14:06) My first weeks at school were a lot of fun; maybe a little too much fun. I’ve spent so much time with friends, having fun doing what your supposed to do in college. Well thats what i thought at first. I spent so much time off campus not doing homework, and sleeping in, that i missed a lot of class. Today Im paying the price by working harder than i should have too as a freshman. Im not sure if I will pass my algebra class, but I only have myself to blame. I have been told that i have some of the best professors at UCA; I honestly don’t 5
doubt that. I took advantage of the laid back environment, and didn’t do the homework that was assigned. I’m doing better now, I have caught up alot of my homework, and set things straight with my teachers. Honestly I would rather be in school than back at home, so I plan on stepping up my game next semester. I’m learning to manage my partying and school a lot better now, but than all the sudden I had to miss more school for family issues. I don’t think I can miss any more classes without being dropped. This really sucks, because if i get sick I have to deal. I plan on setting aside a couple of hours a day to do homework, and instead of putting off the homework I will do it as soon as I get the assignment. –wkirk1
My Reflections- UALR (2010-11-08 15:01) Getting onto the campus was a fresh start for me. I haven’t been on it in so long since my mother took me with her business classes during 2003, but much has changed here since then. Getting around wasn’t my main worry in college. It was connecting with others quickly and building a relationship with others. The classes were not hard to find over the first few weeks, since I was not thankfully walking a mile or so to my next class. The homework began to start during the second week, and by then I began to condition myself for the obstacles of class. Online College Algebra to writing programs for my Computer Science class - those were the two main worries I had, otherwise, I only required discipline to read and study up on what I should, whether it was notes that I took the same day or free reading in the books I spent quite enough money on. I admit the fact that I lounged around on my work and studies a little too much, yet now that I remind myself that how I am here is the gift of studying in high school, and being able to come here free on scholarships and grants...it just plays out in my mind ”Don’t lose this chance to get your future - for FREE.” It’s a blessing to be on the scholarships, seeing that only so many could actually have the chance to earn them, and that even though those who did make the grade were not chosen to receive them. There are several of those from my high school who chose to come here, and I still hang around some, yet what is more rewarding to me is to make friends with those I am still learning from, and my First-Year Experience class is where I felt more accepted, besides Computer Science. I saw myself being the only ”white” male in the classroom among many African American men (as much as I have told people that I am Native American, since I mainly am, they only hold prejudice towards me or they still call me Caucasian). However, that stereotype did not stop me from establishing friendships with the class, including the instructor himself. I didn’t suspect to be in a class with only males, though. Nonetheless, it is a worthwhile experience, and it is good to be in a minority group, just like me. I was so used to the nine-week schedule that I never thought of mid-term exams being held after 6-7 weeks, especially when we have 16 weeks this semester (which I also found out), but still I make it through. Learning in First-Year experience is very good, which it teaches me time management skills, as well as money management and test taking skills. These will benefit me beyond the campus environment to my own workplace, as I attempt to graduate with Computer Science being my major. Each and every person in the classroom is different, which is something to respect, because no person is exactly alike another. They are all special in ways we have yet to understand. 6
–krblevins clinsy1 (2010-11-09 20:35:21) My experience with an all-male class was new to me. I was use to a class with males and females. My instructor and my classmates have a lot of good times during the first nine weeks. I am glad that I have this experience because I have a chance to learn and know people.
First Year Experience Blog- UALR (2010-11-08 15:05) My first 9 weeks of college at UALR were challenging but yet steady due to the responsibilities that take care of on a daily basis. It took me two years until I decided to go to college and I got accustomed being at home and working all the time rather than studying, doing homework, and projects that are assigned from my classes but it was like I needed to discipline my time to make sure work was getting I am surprised about the quantity knowledge that I am receiving in my mind and how quick I adapted to the college life because at first I was froze about college no knowing what to do, sleeping late and arriving to school late and sometimes not even showing up but now its like I love college and I feel like it s the best decision I have ever made and I couldn t see myself ever attending college. There is some changes that I will have to make for me to succeed with my best potential toward s the ends of this semester because I don t get enough sleep because you know you have to sustain when your living off campus in a house so your probably working a part time or full time job but I m working at UAMS Hospital overnight and sometimes I work overtime so I m tired and it leaves me with no time to study especially with an awkward work schedule they set up weekly then I still want to get it in on the weekends partying and having fun but I take care of business in the process. I also have to take my daughter to daycare and have my cousin at work in the mornings around class have to start so attendance becomes an issue but UALR taught ne discipline with my time so I notice the hours of the activities I am performing and time it in where I can deal with in an organized way that s fits me and comfortable. So now I get enough sleep and I realized that my education is the main focus in this process and everything else floats around m because income increase is the main priority so I cut back on my fun time and created a schedule where I study and handle business around the times I have to be at work and I wake up an hour early before the day begins to make sure I everything is on track and confidential because I am only human so I still make mistakes but my passion I have for my learning and the determination I have to graduate with my Business Degree I will not fail, so now im trying to work extra hard to receive scholarships not only to purchase my admission to attend there but also to leave my mark where a young man who worked harder to accelerate his learning skills and went beyond of just being a student at UALR because it is doing a good job of providing me with the resources to be successful in college. –dmbooth
My Experience at UALR (2010-11-09 10:35) My first nine weeks at UALR flew by faster than my first nine weeks in high school. I blinked and then it was mid-term. I guess because my teachers have kept me so busy that I didn’t notice how time was flying by. I guess that quote in Mr. Howard’s class was correct, ”Time will pass, will you?” I like UALR though. 7
Finding my classes was not nearly as hard as finding friends. Didn’t too many of my friends graduate from high school; some did but didn’t take the next step up. It took me a while to get use to UALR because I didn’t know anybody. I was thinking, ”Man! I’m going to be an outcast, a lame.” Once I started warming up to people though everything else fell into place after that. I also ran into some old classmates that use to go to my old high school. I found out that there is a lot to do at UALR. All of the workshops, organizations, clubs, parties, etc. Getting out of class early sometimes is also a good thing. The biggest surprise that I have had is that there are so many people that want to help me graduate. There are people want to see me succeed. There was probably a hand full of people that wanted that at my old high school. You will get a lot of support and help from UALR faculty. They send me emails like crazy; just to let me know about upcoming events and workshops. AAMI has been a huge help for me also. Mr. Howard knew who I was before I knew him (I’m still trippin off that). Someone who would take the time to figure out their students names, before we even have the class, is someone who wants me to graduate and succeed. His workshops have been a big help to me. Ms. Moorehead has also helped me out. I may have missed her appointments two times but she still allowed me to reschedule my appointments, without getting mad. The behavior that I will change first is the fact that I can’t get away with the same things that I did in high school and still pass. Procrastination is a huge one. In high school I could do a last minute paper and make it legit. If I know a paper is going to need a lot of time and research, then I will work in intervals. Work on it a little at a time, not making extra work for myself, not letting it stress me out. If I do this, it will be composed correctly and not something that is thrown together. Studying is another one. Going home and studying a couple of hours a night is a lot better than cramming it the last minute. Reading is the last one. Reading really goes hand to hand with studying. Reading the chapters before your lectures will help you understand what the teacher is talking about. Rereading and studying your material every night will help you on test day. I also have a job so getting some study time is extremely important. Asking your professors questions well really help; something that I need to do more of. Remember that your professors cannot help you out if your just sit around. These changes can help me become a master student. It helps me grow up and put the childish tactics behind me. I used these tactics countless times in high school but they don’t work anymore in college. UALR can help me more by keep send me emails about upcoming events and workshops. Sometimes UALR even send me text messages and calls about things.
My First Nine Week at UCA (2010-11-09 20:14) My first nine week a UCA was difficult at first. I am not use to leave my parents behind. A couple of weeks later, I felt like UCA was my new home. I have attended at least four organizations. I know my way around the UCA campus. My classes are not hard but challenging. I learn to stay on top of my homework and classwork. I learn that the instructors are here for students to help. My first biggest surprise was UCA had so many organizations and activities for the students. The reason is because I have never thought that UCA have a lot of activities and organizations on campus. My second biggest surprise was the University Writing Center and an Academic Success Center. I did not know that UCA has a University Writing Center and Academic Success Center. I know now that University Writing Center and the Academic Success Center have tutors to help students succeed on their class work. My third biggest surprise at UCA was the student center. The student center has a food court, a radio station, 8
and a ballroom for activities. One behavior I will change is to have time for all of my class work. This reason is because I will fail at least one of my classes if I do manage my time. The second behavior I will change is to ask the instructors or tutors for help. The third behavior I will change is to stay on task with my class work. The rest of my behaviors I will not change because I am responsible for my own actions. I will learn the best of my ability to have success in my life. If I fail, I will not choose to give up on myself. I will keep moving forward no matter what happens. The changes will be beneficial to my success at UCA by organizing my time, ask instructors or tutors for help, and stay on task with my class work. It is very important for me to organize my time because I can have my homework on time or be ready for an exam. There will be less pressure for me if I manage my time to prepare myself a few weeks ahead for an exam or homework instead of the night before. If I do not understand the assignment, I will ask for the instructors or tutors for help. The instructors and tutors are here for students like me. UCA is doing a good job of providing me with the resources to be successful in college because UCA has a University Writing Center and Academic Success Center to help students to reach their success goal. The University Writing Center helps students with their presentations, stories, poems, speeches, and other writing assignments. The Academic Success Center has tutors for students who need help with their math or science work. The Academic Success Center has computers for students to do their class work. UCA have a lot of opportunities for students like me in education, activities, and organizations. UCA is the best college for my education and my future career. –clinsy1
Freshman Year- UALR (2010-11-10 08:42) My freshman year of college has been one that has taught me a large amount. I have probably learned more over the past year than I did during all of my high school years. Not necessarily dealing with anything related to books, but more with life. I’m not trying to downplay what I’ve learned in the classroom but most of the knowlegde that I’ve gained has come outside of it. College more than anything has taught me a strong lesson in growing up and becoming a man. It was a hard adjustment at first for me because I had never been this far from home for such a long period of time. The adjustment also had to be made switching from such a big city like Chicago to Little Rock. There are a lot of similarities but at the same time the differences are big enough that they really really stand out. Once I got over the homesickness the school part of college was not necessarily easy either though. It isn’t so much because the work is hard, more because I was really lazy coming out of high school. The old habits that I built up senior year of going to school when I felt like it, sleeping in class, and never studying died a slow death. Because of that I was put on academic probation after the spring semester. Thats when everything really started to hit me that getting through college wasn’t going to be the easy road that high school was. I had to grow up and grow up fast. I’m still not quite there but I’m slowly getting there. Another college has helped me with is understanding people. Since I came to Arkansas I see people who think totally different than anybody I’ve ever met. It’s like everyone down here was raised on a different set of morals. I come out feeling like I’m the bad guy a lot of the time. The last thing college has probably taught me is to prioritze. One terrible habit I had coming into college was that instead of doing what I needed to do I would do what I wanted to first and then maybe do what I needed to do later. If I wanted to go chill with my friends on the weekdays I would do that and when I got home if I was tired I would go to sleep and forget all about whatever work I had due. That habit 9
even got me kicked off the basketball team my senior year of high school. When I got to college I couldnt do that anymore though. I tried it already and it worked out terribly. Like I said it got me put on academic probation and I’m still a freshman after two full semesters. So far it seems like I finally have it figured out, however, and from this point on hopefully everthing will start looking up for the best. I know it will take a lot of hard work to dig myself out of the hole I dug but I truly figure I can do it. No my freshman year hasn’t been exactly what I planned it to be but it was what I expected. It’s been a reality check. A high-priced one. But it was one that was definitely needed. –wjwebb
My UALR First Year Experience (2010-11-10 09:29) The first thing that I notice at UALR, was how all the staff seemed friendly and happy. I came to the school in the summer 2010. I missed a class and the teacher would call the same day and ask me what went wrong. I was just surprised that they even cared. I guess it was because of all the rummers that I heard about the teachers not knowing your name. But all my professors knew my name and I talked to them daily. That really shocked me. The first nine weeks of the semester was up and down for me. I had an ROTC class that was demanding, and I had a lot of outside activities to deal with. It was very hard for me to balance out the school activities with outside activities as well. I found myself missing due dates, missing class, missing events, and failing test. It took me a at least four of those weeks to balance everything out. I loved all the girls that were at the school, some of them seemed to be to much into them selves. But it was ok, I guess. My First Year experience class was pretty good and cool. I like the class and it gave me a lot of good info on how to study and etc. I hated having to go to workshops after class. I live like thirty minutes away from this school. So if I get out of class at 11:30 and at 10:30, but the workshops start at 2 and 5. What am I supposed to do, wait or go home. Gas is to much for me to be going home. I would change a lot of things next semester. I will do less activities after school and get my mind more on school. I will study more and do my homework in advance. This should allow mw to be more prepared for for the class and get my grades up. I think UALR should do a better job on the time blocks of workshops.
Doing it like a big bear - UCA (2010-11-10 10:46) Man is college sure different. My first thought about making the transition from high school to college is that it wouldn’t be as hard as people make it seem. Boy was I sure wrong. I use to think the hardest part would be classes, because in high school we usually sit in a classroom all day from sometime after 8:00 am to 3:45. How could college be any harder than that? Fifty minutes on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays and an hour and fifteen on Tuesday and Thursdays sounded like a piece a cake to me at first till class actually starts. There’s so much responsibility put on you, the student now, than there ever was in high school. Not being forced to participate and listen, and even take notes seems like a joy, but in the end, if you miss it it’ll come back to bite you. I don’t know if it’s me, but these classes at UCA seem harder than they should be. Not every class is hard, and not every class has a huge workload, but the ones that do can damper on the freshman experience badly. The biggest thing about UCA though that keeps me going is the girls. I heard that last fall the ratio was 4:1 on girls to boys. Now it seems like its 8:1 cause I see way more girls than I do boys, and im fine with that. You wont find any complaints over here in that department. These girls up here make college worthwhile, there are good looking older women, sorority girls, underclassmen, upperclassmen and even graduate students. Some of the teachers aren’t that bad either. Its hard to maintain focus sometimes with all the ”distractions” but i’ll think ill make it. So far, I love college. 10
Blog Prompt - UALR (2010-11-10 12:12) I love my freshman year so far it s going very well for me. I would not like to forget my freshman year, but in general it is a time filled with anticipation, some anxiety, and wonderful discoveries. College is a lot different than high school. I have decided to attend a four year university 200 miles from my hometown. I think my freshman experience will definitely make an impression on me. Without doubt, though, the most dramatic part of my first nine weeks is that I live so far away from home, and I m not use to it, because I get homesick at times. What can i expect as you head off into the wonderful world of higher education? The first thing I notice is the workload. It is heavier and more intense than I ever experienced before. The major challenges of college work are the large volume of reading, the short deadlines, and the writing, writing, writing. A related effect that was brought onto me by the workload is doubt, frustration, loneliness. I am away from the comforts and friendships of my home provided for me over the previous years. On my some of those long, seemingly endless nights of studying and writing, I began to get nostalgic. Also during this first nine weeks, I keep convincing myself to not make a major decision in the major I choose, because I know it will affect the rest of my life in the future. I am making a lot of new friends. I also continue to be myself. I do not strike a pose or play the role of someone I m not. I select your friends with the same care and patience I have always used. Believe it or not, my college friendships will be among the most satisfying and long-term of your life. It’s always exciting to discover how wonderfully diverse college relationships can be. I am also my own boss (more or less) 24 hours a day. I have to be careful sometimes. I don t want to be going around wasting all my time when I know I have work to be done I am going to enjoy the freedom I have, but with that freedom come a lot of responsibilities I have to uphold. Some nights I stay up talking mom on the telephone just so it can ease the homesickness a little. Even though my parents aren t around to follow me up on my loose ends, I shouldn’t let things go completely. I have to just find my own style find your own style. Even though it s just the first nine weeks I am already thinking about my future, and the things I m going to have to do to get it the way I want it. I am already on the lookout for role models. I have a few professors that I consider aspiring already. Based on my first year experience I think going to college is as much about finding out about who I really am, as it is about getting that degree. I think this because in order for me to get a degree it going to have to be in some I like doing, because if my degree don t fit me then what am I going to do with it. This is how my first year experience in the first nine weeks at UALR been thus far. What UALR can do to help me be successful, it has many opportunities for me to, so examples are teachers provide office hours if you need extra help with class, there is are people around campus who will help you if u need it. UALR can be a successful campus to anyone. What UALR can do to help me be more successful? What UALR can help me be more successful is that, it should provide smaller class sizes. That is all it can do to help me be more successful at this time. 11

Nine Weeks - UALR (2010-11-10 12:13) My first nine weeks at UALR was really ruff for me. It wasn t because of the work, instructors, or the environment. I was having a lot of personal problems and got really behind on my work. I m slowly catching back on my work because I have met great peers that are willing to help me get caught up. My instructors are very understanding and I feel like I could come to them about my problems. Happy that I m in the AAMI program because I feel that I have the support I need to finish college. The instructors in the AAMI class are gentlemen that I can relate to and make me feel like I can achieve and that failure is really not an option. The biggest surprise this semester for me was to know that I actually was in college. I m the first to go in my family and I want to be someone that my children can look up to. I know it s going to take hard work but I m going to do what I have to do to achieve that goal. Now that I m approaching the end of the semester it will be a couple of things that I will change. One thing that I will change is I want miss near as many classes because I get so far behind and I miss out on a lot of important information. I also will study longer and use more of my free time getting ready for class and making sure all my home work is done. This will benefit me in a many different ways. I wouldn t have to catch up on my work and it wouldn t cause so much stress of me trying to catch up. I think if my attendance is good that alone would help me a lot more on this journey to success. Right now UALR is helping me with everything that I need and I don t have any complaints. –rxnoid
First nine weeks at UALR (2010-11-10 12:15) My first nine weeks at UALR was very eye opening and interesting . Never did I think entering into college that they have a would dedicated group of peers willing to assist freshmen with their transition from high school to college easy . When you think about college , the thought of long classes and professors that will lecture your ear off , comes to mind , not at UALR , I mean don’t get me wrong the Instructors do what is asked and expected of them , they just take the initiative to lend the helping hand to those who are seeking and willing to learn to excel to the next level and establish their career . I feel as though this semester would have been alot more successful for me if I didn’t have to work so much . Working has interfered with my time management which effected my studying time which showed on some test grades . While discussing my next semester schedule with my advisor working prompted me to request night classes so that I can work full time and go to school at night and not interfere with my studying time. There isn’t too much more that UALR can do that will assist me in being successful in College except do my work online and we both know that isn’t going to happen . With all the assistance that is at finger tip reach ” failure is not an option ” as one great philosopher stated . UALR thanks for doing ALL that you do and continue to reach out to African American Males to assist us in turning the ratio of young black males graduating and completing college around successfully . –jerobinsons

First Semester Experience - UALR (2010-11-10 12:19) Has anyone ever been through a time when you leave from one location to go to another and don’t know what to expect? This semester, I am going through an experience where I am starting from the bottom working my way up to the top. My name is cwwaters. My major is in Journalism newspapers and plan to have a minor in photography. This is my first semester here at UALR after transferring from the University of Arkansas-Monticello. After the first day of class, I discovered that I didn’t feel the same. My financial aid didn’t go through, I didn’t have any books for my classes, I scheduled to take 15 hours, and I don’t live on campus. The hardest thing that I couldn’t get over was to fit in to the school atmosphere. There were alot of questions going through my mind such as: What I am going to do? How I’m going to handle things? When will things get better on the way? Some people I didn’t know, approached me and asked about me or, otherwise, I would approach them. That was one way that got me started. Those moments reminded me of an advice that someone gave me once before, ”You have to go through the sticks and storms to get to the sunshine.” Therefore, in my mind, positive thoughts started to come in as in things are going to work out for me throughtout the semester. My main goal for this term is to finish this semester on a positive note. My First Year Experience class is helping me alot with not just my other classes but the real world itself. We’ve been through chapters & quizzes where we’ve discussed about time management, money, study/testtaking skills, communication, memory, active reading skills, and observing our techniques. Also, we’ve been notified from our professors about informational meetings, workshops, and other events for extra credit. The most important things I like about the course is it’s open opportunity to many students, helps out with everything that is dealing with school or outside of school, and has people to guide to a masterplan to graduation time. Last but not least, it changes many attitudes and lives of other students who are coming in from high school, another college, or older students. Through the semester, everything has gotten better. I am learning to be more outstanding, using my techniques from one class to another, and participating in several occasions that interests me. Most of all, I am learning from other student’s stories who have been through the college experience and knows the feeling. A friend mentioned to me to hang with the positive people who wants to further their education. Somehow, the technique also took me this far. Everyday, I see a group of people either studying for their class during a break from class or having a discussion. Overall, being successful is the way I want to end the semester on a positive note. –cwwaters
My AAMI program - UALR (2010-11-10 12:22) My first 9 weeks at U.A.L.R has been the most wonderful experience it has been like no other school ive been to, its a college. its going to change the way some of us look at things the thing ive really noticed i have had to change was to stop depending on people, and become a man the best way i know how. i become a man by taking critisism and learning from that also. i have two classes with just men in it so i learn from other men as well and there is not just men my age so i learn from all. i try to become friends with all the men in my class because i know i want to make friends but also build a lifetime bond with some of these men. its some faces that ive seen in the past but its mostly people i have never seen before in my life and i know i can become cool because i get along with them all as well as everyone else in my classes we’re all friendly and open to another mans culture and getting to know more about it. its nothing in my classes we cant talk about thats why i say it has been such a wonderful experience because we talk about any and everything and have alot of fun doing it. we have some teachers that has come from sort of the same background we 13
have, like nmost of the stuff we like, and do some of the things we love to do. for instance in my class we are always comparing stuff to basketball and thats because most of us like that particular sport. the things we do in our class im not able to do at home with my family because i cant be myself while im at home and cant talk about what i want to because i have to put on a sharade because i know what my family expects out of me and i have to be that at home, at school we talk about everything and i can be truthful about. the teachers at the school are more than just teachers they are really mentors and role models because none of the men are doing anything wrong they are trying to be something in life just like that our teacher Harvell is a great role model because he is more than just another african american male with a little money and not doing anything with it he’s actually earning his money by being a leader and a role model for us, my other teacher Jeremy is actually still in school and still working on degrees so he is just what we need in the class telling us and tutoring us for whats coming up. its other things to like they assign a mentor to you just for anything you might have trouble with and someone to talk to about anything. its alot i can tell you about the first 9 weeks of college these were just some things i felt strongly about and got to me. –trroddy
My experiences at UALR (2010-11-10 12:28) I must say my first nine weeks at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock was quit an experience. Do to the fact I m a transfer Student from Dillard University, It was kind of hard to adjust to all the new changes and new faces I would be seeing for the next semester. From day one it was stressful I had to be on top of classes and made sure all my credits transferred, had all the right classes, and deciding what my major would be in the near future. Recollecting myself from the summer I settle down to focus on my school work. Taking 15 hours this semester was going to be a challenge for me. Trying to fit in socially and find some people to talk to was difficult for me at first also. Honestly I didn t see myself making this far but I m still hanging on , with prayer, concentration, strive and my mom s motivation are my main tools to that I apply for future success. The biggest surprise however was the hands on encouragement from the AAMI program. Almost immediately during my transition period they made me feel comfortable in attending UALR. During registration week Mr. Harvelle Howard Introduced me to all of the directors over the program and told me that Will have mentors to help watch over you to make sure you on the right path and not get off task. This made me feel as though I have someone on my side that really cares about my education at the University.. As the semester Rolled on I learned a variety of new things that helped me on this semester, and my overall graduation plans. When spring semester comes into play I will make some major adjustments and a few minors one to have a more laid back but successful schedule for the next semester. The major Issue that I feel needs improvement would be procrastination. In My first Year experience course Mr. Whitaker and Mr. Howard my instructors, talk to the classroom about time management. They asked us why we think it s important not to procrastinate. Also what are some things you can do to improve this issue? After a brief brainstorm session, they gave us some suggestion that illustrated key points on how to avoid this problem. Like being on time, make a schedule and organize your time wisely. Another issue I had with this Semester has been managing money. Being in college I found it easy for myself to go broke. Often I would spend money on the wrong material. In several classes we discussed how to avoid debt in the near future, and how to learn to save money now. These changes will be benefiting me greatly especially for my success at UALR. For one I can start early and learn how to manage my finances. So when I get out of college in four years I can pay back the school 14
what I own and not go into to debt so early. Learning to better organize myself will increase my academic standings, by making daily to do list schedules, being on time, and getting things done as soon as possible will help me stay alert and focused my upcoming years at UALR. Keeping informed about campus life, such as volunteering, job fairs, and after school workshops, will keep my mind active and add to my success. I feel I can seek more opportunities and have a better advantage for the real world. Although their positives their negatives. Even though some professor have been good help I feel like some professors could be a bit more hands on when it comes to encouraging students to do well in class. Some of my classes my instructor s could carless if a student show up to school are not.. Also I would like to suggest that UALR would have more campus life. This would benefit me more because It would get the student body involved and give the students a better taste of college life instead of going to school and home every day. Even with the negatives, I truly believe this semester has been a tremendous experience. I ve learned a lot and I do believe it will greatly benefit me in the Future. –rxwimley
My First Nine Weeks at UALR (2010-11-10 12:29) My First Nine Weeks at U.A.L.R. Week 1: During this week, I got accustomed to the new campus and how everything operated. Two weeks before school started, I walked around campus and found my classes so that I wouldn t be lost on the first day. Since I m a first generation college student I had to find out a lot of things on my own. Even though I had financial aid, I kept wondering how am I going to pay for my books and other things that I need for class. I thought that since I went to the orientation that they said was mandatory that they would tell me this, but they didn t. The only thing that I could think to do was to contact one of my high school teachers and ask her how everything worked; and she told me that everything goes on the Student I.D card. She told me that all I had to do was go to the Book Store and buy anything from there and pay for it with my card. That was also the way that I paid for any food from the food court. Week 2: The thing that I learned about going to class is that no one is going to make you go, you either go on your own, or you don t go at all. I m a part of AAMI (African American Male Initiative), and this program is designed to help reduce the retention rate of African American Week 3: By this time I had fully adjusted from the transition of high school life to college life. Week 4: I had a couple of quizzes this week, they were challenging, but I did ok for my first college quiz. Week 5-7: These two weeks prepared me for taking the mid-term. Week 8-9: I ve taking all of my mid-term exams, and my grades are posted. The biggest surprise has been that in all of my classes more males are answering questions then I m used to; because in high school it was the females that would answer more of the questions. The thing that I will work better on as the end of the semester approaches is the way that I study. The thing that s working for me is reviewing for any test right before class. 15
For me to be more successful in college UALR needs to do something about the way the classrooms are built; we need more space in some of the classrooms that we use. The university should have more places for us to go and study other than the library. –krjackson1
Working while in School - UALR (2010-11-10 12:32) Having a job in high school gives me an edge. As an employee, I have learned to interact with many different types of people, work together, and learn the value of a dollar. Being employed is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Participating in a job has offered me many opportunities to make friends, assume a leadership role, and take on responsibilities. Working has enabled me to become a more mature and well-rounded individual. Without a job, I would not be who I am today. When you are employed, you have to work every other day in order to make money, and it becomes apparent that you do not have all the time in the world to accomplish every day tasks like homework or athletics. With so much going on in a high- schoolers life, it is essential to prioritize. Participation in a job has helped me learn to do just that. By keeping an organized schedule of my responsibilities, and using my time well, I have been able to show my peers that it is possible to accomplish what needs to be done. At school and at work, people look up to me for advice. Just knowing that others see how hard you work to get things done in your own life makes the world of difference in how you feel about yourself. Despite the number of hours I have dedicated to my job, I have been able to maintain a B average. I have learned that if something is important to you, you can accomplish whatever you want to. My participation in the world of working has made all the difference to me. Working plays a key role in many students lives. Participation in employment has given me a sense of maturity and has made me feel good about myself. It has made a difference in my life, and I am sure in many other lives, too. People may say working while in school is too hard but it is not as hard as people make it seem. To be honest, it is easier for me because I do well under pressure. And for me to work better I have to be constantly doing something with my self to stay focused, so that’s why it is easier for me to handle both school and work. There’s also a negative part to it too. In the struggle to become more independent, you must start paying your own way. But there s a price; stress, lack of social life and sleep depravation are all negative effects of working and going to school. Many people do this, while going to college to better themselves and they must work to pay for it. Because we all know, higher education is not free. Well at least not for most, except for the lucky few with the rich parents! Realistically most people work their way through college, attempting to balance both work and school. But what does all this do to a person? Stress is one of the biggest negative effects plaguing working college students. So much is expected from them. –ncwanne
My College Experience-UALR (2010-11-10 12:33) All summer long, I was thinking about the transition from high school to college. As most first time freshman I thought it was going to be an enormous challenge, but I was wrong. When I finally arrived on campus and went to my first class, things were easier than I thought. I made friends, got to know my instructors and the school work wasn’t all that hard. My first nine weeks at University of Arkansas at Little Rock (U.A.L.R) was inimitable and extraordinary. I learned new things academically and I met different people from different cultures. The experience was truly astonishing, during the week I studied and did homework and on the weekend I partied like a rock star. The bad thing about U.A.L.R is the concrete. The concrete has cracks 16
all over it and it seemed as if I tripped almost every twenty-five yards. Even though the first semester was fairly easy, I will use different tactics when I enter the spring semester. My classes will be harder and I will study every three hours for every hour of class. I know this will be beneficial to me because it will help me reach my goal of becoming a pharmacist. I will learn the material and not just memorize it. U.A.L.R has tutors everywhere on campus in every subject major, so it is almost impossible to fail. U.A.L.R also has extracurricular activities and organizations that anyone could join, so basically U.A.L.R is doing its job as a university. The dorms are in excellent shape and they have something beneficial on all but one floor. The fifth floor has the T.V room, the fourth floor has the study room, the third floor has the computer lab and the first floor has the laundry room, vending machines and the student lounge. This makes things more convenient so students will not have to walk across or go off campus for simple ordinary things. With that said, classes are not so far apart and we have the Student Center. The student center is where everyone communicates and eats. It s a place with nothing but pure activity. The food is costly, but when the geeks do their steps, you forget you just spent 7.88 on a cheese burger, fries, and a drink. All in all I personally recommend the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to any individual of any ethnic background. It is a magnificent university that strives for excellence in every area and they have Trojan pride! I am proud to say I am a part of that Trojan pride, we are a family here at U.A.L.R and we help each other reach and complete goals. If you want to get the best out of your investment in your education, come to U.A.L.R. We help each other Live, Learn, and Laugh. –edmills
New Beginnings- UALR (2010-11-10 12:36) Some people say that college is when your life really starts and every decision you make is very important. When you step in that college class room all games come to an end and becoming a responsible adult is your next goal. Hi, my name is ntadams and I am attending the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. High school wasn t really all that hard for me and even though I didn t really have to work too hard, I realized that I wanted to be successful and become a great man just as my number one role model, My Father, he is one person that has my back and taught me that I need to be prepared for what the world is going to throw at me. He sat me down after my first day of becoming a senior in high school and told me that I need to jump on scholarships and make a plan for my future. This had me thinking, what college am I going to attend, what profession do I want to go into, and how am I going to pay for this education that I soon will pursue. So I decided to research and apply for scholarships. I even auditioned at a couple of schools for band scholarships and I received one from Southern University, Mississippi Valley State, and Alcorn State University. But, I didn t want to be in band for the rest of my college career so I took the academic route. One of my teachers told me to try for the East scholarship at UALR, since I loved technology; I made that my main goal. I did all of the requirements for it and waited. A couple of months past and nothing was happening until one Thursday when I looked into the mail and I saw a UALR letter which said ntadams you have been granted the east scholarship. The summer approached and I decided to acquire a head start on my education so I took speech course on UALR s campus to grasp how everything was going to be. Even though everything was in a more intense pace than the high school I attended I managed to pull a B out of that course. The summer went by fairly fast and the fall started to come around and I was enjoying my new home. As of now, I am a freshman at UALR, and I love it! I don t really enjoy doing the work, but most of my professors make things exhilarating to a point where I enjoy my new learning environment. Now I m an 17
Information Science major, which I m changing to Radiology Technology. I also plan to receive a quality education from UALR so when I am in Med. School I will be prepared for the work that will be presented to me. My goal is to become a Radiology Technician, where I will aim to work with finding a cure for cancer. I know that my remanding years here at UALR and my years to come in Medical School will be a challenge, but it will be well worth it. This is a new beginning that will have the most impactful, significant, and influential effect on my life. I am ready for the beginning, middle, and the most prosperous end. –ntadams
First Nine Weeks At UALR (2010-11-10 12:38) My first nine weeks of attending UALR has been a great learning experience. It didn t take long to figure out that this was the perfect place for me to further my education. Since being a student here, my attitude about college has changed tremendously. I have made necessary changes to adapt to the lifestyle of college. During the first half of the semester, my professors continuously stressed how important it was to read. I, myself, found this to be very true. In doing so, I have obtained better studying habits, such as, reading more in depth, taking better notes, and asking more questions. I feel that these few things have made me a better and more productive student. I have surrounded myself around people that are really passionate about learning and expect great things out of life. I ve met many different people that I have grown to become good friends with. One of the things I enjoy most is listening to my professor s lectures. From their lectures, I obtain a great amount of knowledge that can be carried with me throughout life. UALR has a great group of skilled teachers and staff that are really concerned about their students. I feel as though my teachers give me motivation to successfully reach and accomplish my goals in life. I haven t been too involved in the campus life yet, but I plan on changing that in the following semester. Since I work a part time job, it sometimes becomes challenging to fully experience the campus life. So as for now, I am working on a better way to manage my time so that I can study, work and still maintain a social life Greeks are also really popular here on campus and I plan on joining one in the future. As for now, my main goal is to stay focused on school and my job. This summer, I made a promise to myself to give all I had in me to be a successful student at UALR. That being said, I feel that I have successfully completed my first nine weeks at UALR. Though it gets tough to balance school, work, and a social life, I continue to strive to do my best so that I can reach my goal. I believe in myself being successful here at UALR because I feel like I progressed at this college a lot in my first nine weeks, from the help of my teachers and advisors I don t have any complaints about the staff. Throughout the remainder of this semester, I hope to obtain more knowledge that will carry me into my second semester at this university. I m happy to be surrounded by teachers care about me as a individual to succeed and graduating college. This is very important to me. I know that growing as an individual and as a student is my responsibility. It is my goal to succeed and I truly believe that this university is the one of many stepping stones that will guide me into a successful future. –kfmallory
(2010-11-12 12:13) My first couple weeks at UALR have been pretty good. It s been a lot of hard work especially with all the test and essays. Being in college has really helped me realize I need a better work ethic. I worked hard all 18
my four years in high school but not like I am now. It s times where I don t feel like studying or writing but when I think of my mama and all she s doing for me I get straight to work. I m not only going to college for myself I go for my family too. It feels good knowing I m making the people that really care about me proud. It hasn t just been all work though. College has been fun too with all the parties and events that go on. Some of the workshops I have attended have been fun even the ones I thought wouldn t be. I ve also met a couple of cool people at UALR since I ve been here. Probably the biggest surprise to me about college is all the work we have to do. I knew it would be a lot but not to the point where I would have to study or write an essay just about every day. I m not complaining I know it will make my work ethic better, which I will need in the future. I know it will be a lot more work than it is now in the next couple years so I m just getting ready for then. As I move towards the end of my first semester in college. I feel I have to make many changes to my approach to college for the next semester and other years to come. At first I thought I would do what I did in high school and just cruise by easily. After about two weeks I saw that wouldn t work, I would have to really work if I want to be successful. Lately I ve been changing my study habits trying to study everything I need too so I can pass any test I have. Also trying to read something new and positive every day. Things I wouldn t even normally do but I see it as being a good thing as I move forward with college. I think UALR is doing a good job of providing the students with resources to be successful in college. For me they helped me by putting me in the AAMI program, which has provided me with tutors and people to talk to about the college life. If it wasn t for the program I probably even be doing as good as I am now, especially with the way I use to work when I was in high school. For other students I m sure there are other programs or ways the school is helping them to be successful with whatever they are doing, whether it s a test, essay, or just a simple work sheet. Overall my college experience so far has been good and hopefully it will continue to be that way.
First Nine Weeks at UALR (2010-11-15 10:54) During my first nine weeks at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock I didn’t really get the full experience as a freshman in my opinion, all because I didn’t stay on campus. It was very frustrating at times not having guaranteed transportation to school. Sometimes it was even discouraging, it made me contemplate on whether I should go back to my hometown or not but I decided to tough it out until next semester, which I’ll then be moving on campus. Other than than minor problem, I really enjoy attending UALR. I feel like its a good school. The campus is enormous and it looks real good. UALR offers a lot of extra curricular activities , opportunities, and degrees. Its always something to participate in on campus. The professors here are nice and caring, also the students are cool and easy to interact with. There is also a couple of things UALR should really consider investing in, which is a cafeteria and a football team. I believe by getting these two things the school would attract tons of people. As far as grades go I gots lots of room for progress. I haven’t been applying as much time and effort into school as I should be. I plan on making better grades by improving my study habits, turning in my work on time, and also by cutting out procrastination and seeking tutoring. By making these few improvements I believe I could maintain a very decent grade point average. I also think these are a few tips that can help anyone else that isn’t achieving the grades they are capable of achieving.

First 9- Weeks at UCA (2010-11-17 20:53) My first nine weeks at UCA has been a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the welcome week actives it allowed me to meet so many different people. The classes I am taking have been very easy so far but I am sure they will become harder. Until recently I have had a hard time finding my place at UCA it at a far seemed very group oriented. You must find your own group of people in order to fit in. My roommate and me seem to be getting along well. I am never in the room thought because I am currently balancing 4 jobs one in the work shop another at North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce doing graphic development and another as photo editor In the current Yearbook . You might be asking i haven’t talked about my last job that job is one that i am the boss at I am the founder of Gen-Y multi media development which right now is in its early birth stages. The biggest surprise to me at UCA is how easy it is this year i really expected a lot harder classes . If I had to do it again i would get involved sooner than I did. I would also study alot more than i have been even though the classes have been easy i feel like i could do better than i currently am.I would als have a better relationship with most of my teachers.
