Prez report March 2013 These newsletters come around so quickly that it seems like it was only last week when I typed up the last one.

Lots of motorcycling activity has been going on over the last month, with our own stuff as well as other happenings around our region.

Since our last club night (and associated road ride around the Huntly/Waignaro/Te Uku loop road) we have held a couple of Trials events and the Far North weekend road ride (more about these further along in this newsletter). Speaking of last months’ club night, I must thank Hamilton Motorcycle Centre for bringing along the 2 new Triumphs to display for us. The 1200cc Explorer and the purple Street Triple are both very impressive bikes, and are very sharply priced too. Get along to their showroom in Te Rapa to check them out if you missed them, and there may even be a demo bike to try out.

Around the region in Feb was also the Classic Racing Festival at Hampton Downs and the Paeroa Street races. March doesn’t seem to be slowing down much with biking activities. The annual Cambridge to Hamilton Toy Run was held last Sunday.

This coming Thursday night is our monthly club night (and our AGM already), our annual End of the Road rally (note the change of date- sorry about the short notice),

more Trials events, the big International bike Speedway event at Western Springs, and 2 rounds of the NZ Superbike series (one at Hampton Downs and one at Taupo), as well as various other Clubs activities/rides/poker runs, etc, etc all happening around our region.

With all these riding events to go to, and all the riding to take part in them, it is good to remind ourselves to ride defensively and sensibly to keep ourselves safe out there.

There have been a few motorcycle related accidents on Waikato roads lately, and whether it is the fault of the rider or the “other” road user, it is usually the bike rider (and their family) who suffer the most. So take it easy out there so you can enjoy a ride and the weather another day.

Our AGM this year will follow the same format as recent years, which is a short, to the point, exercise to cover the formalities to keep our clubs’ “not for profit” tax status.

We don’t like to get bogged down with general club business at the AGM, as anyone can come along to any committee meeting (held on the tues at 8pm; 10 days before club night) to deal with those issues. The AGM normally takes less than an hour to cover the business. Most of the current club “office holders” and general committee members are re-standing; however it is always good to get “new blood” into the committee. If you have an interest in taking part in the running of your club, no matter how small, it would be good to have you on board. Give me a call beforehand on (07)8397722, or see me on the night, or speak to any of the other committee members if you are keen and I’m sure we can accommodate you. Or you can even get someone to nominate you from the floor on the night. With all those options it is easy to get involved!!

February’ club night ride & Street Triple display bike

Ride to the Paeroa Street Races 2013 We had an early start to the day, meeting at Trevs place at 8.00am. After the usual bit of messing about we got out of Hamilton about half an hour or so later, and headed out through Gordonton and Whitikahu to Paeroa.

Trev had been having electrical issues with Di’s ST2 during the weeks beforehand.

But it didn’t stop another (different) gremlin returning in the form of the battery light staying on today. We (He and Di) decided to keep going saying “I’m sure it’ll be o.k.”

I decided to stay in front to keep an eye on their headlight to see if it dimmed at all, hence giving some pre-warning of impending battery failure. I had a spare seat on the back of the Guzzi, so all would not be lost!! The light did not dim on the way there (nor on the way home – WTF?).

We arrived in Paeroa about 9.30ish and zig-zagged around suburbia to arrive at the -5-

pit entrance where the very nice gatekeepers let us park in the grass area to the right of the driveway. It was a damn good parking spot, real close to the action. I highly recommend it to those who intend to go next year.

As Trev and Di were helping out Neville Curran (XV1000 Yamaha) in the pits, the parking spot was almost perfect – about 30m from Neville’s pit.

When we arrived at the pits, Nevilles bike had not been running too well during practice, so by the end of practice he had only completed about 8 full laps. Since he had not been to Paeroa races before (as he now resides in Nelson), this was not ideal.

Racing got underway late, due to an unfortunate practice incident. The racing was as frantic and exciting as ever, and the day was even hotter. The bit of cloud cover was a thankful relief from the heat throughout the day, but after being there for 20 odd years of these hot days I have learnt to take sun cream, long pants, shades and a wide brimmed hat.

I’m not sure who won all the races, but Sloan Frost (BMW) seemed to be doing real well in front of Hayden Fitzgerald, Rhys Holmes and the ever present Tony Rees. I think (from what I could make out from where I was) Steve Bridge was on a winning streak in the one of the Post Classic classes. Neville Curran got a 5th place in one of the races, so he was stoked with that.

It was a good day out for spectators; however 4 of the racers had to be airlifted to hospital, which is something we never like to see. One of them was our club member Nick Kampenhout who was taken out by another rider at the Fathers Tavern corner. That is Nick being launched off #196! No wonder it hurt! We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery from his injuries. Photo credit Craig Dawson.

By the end of the day, I think all the scheduled races were completed and the day finished up about 5.30pm.

It was time to put the riding gear on top of the days’ sun cream-yuk!!

We arrived home about 7pm after an uneventful return ride, with the Dukes battery light still glowing strongly – good dash lights on those Ducatis!!!

We will do it all again next year (but without the on-track incidents).

Aircooled in the Sun Once again the New Year has brought the Aircooled trials series to us.

This year there is more of a team effort required, as more get involved, section setting experience grows and the reliance on the few diminishes. Steve Armistead once again set an outstanding trial with help from Andy and Rodney .Ten totally new section set on John Arthur’s property, in an area where we last rode moderns about five years ago.

Nine sections in the challenging stream as per normal and one hill climb that added variety and relief to those struggling in the water. Water? Yes! The big dry was in its early stages in January but the steam was low enough to allow the old bikes to cope and very little waterproofing issues were apparent.

Sixteen riders started the day with Colin and Larry not finishing for their own reasons, C Grade saw the Bear riding a borrowed RL 250 (why would you do that? And he liked it?). Riding well enough to head off Team Lizard’s Steve and Dave ( I know the other Lizard member took home the trophy of a good shin bruise, ouch!). Guest rider Hamish Eadie (a visitor from France) took out the B grade on a borrowed Bultaco with Peter Clark and John Ravenscroft in hot pursuit.

A Grade saw Peter Osborne showing what the Beast could do with a new set of Falcon shocks fitted , ahead of Steve and Francis who gave his new TY250 Monoshock-Twinshock a christening , a great project and with a bit of setup tuning a danger to the competition(if not to Francis?).

Round two is this coming weekend at Bomber’s, perhaps there will be a report in the next newsletter?

Far North Ride - Terry Stevenson’s Version I bought my Bandit 1200 to go road riding without the stress of having to think about this and that to write an article about for Motorcycle Trader. Like everyone in the club I pay $500 plus for 12 months rego, another $100 odd per annum for a couple of WOFs, and this time I had a leave pass, so why not make use of all that investment and join the club’s Far North Ride?

A couple of days before Friday’s departure date I decided I needed to talk to a Dargaville company about an upcoming ATV safety feature I have to write. That changed my plans somewhat so I planned to head off to Dargaville a little earlier than the club run and catch them at Kaikohe. Or at the Mangonui pub if I ran late, which is what I ended up doing.

Sticking very loosely to Steve’s route I picked out quite a few back roads just to check them out, not knowing if they were gravel or not, but what the hey, I needed the experience (again).

My GSF1200 rolled out the door at 7.50pm. However it turned out there was quite a bit more gravel than planned, but despite the heat I kept to my routes and arrived at the big D around 2.15pm. although I had collided with an airborne Hawk somewhere north of Paparoa, then an hour later a sheep almost took animal revenge as it went for my front wheel while I was braking as hard as I could on the gravel road! I won, but not by much, maybe 100mm or less! In past I’ve been taken down at speed by a sheep on the road out to Te Anau, a dog that also went under my front wheel, and believe it or not, when I ran over a small stone.

An hour at the Northland Feildays was enough so off I went – I’d already txt Steve to keep going as I was runn’in late. More back roads and I hit Kaikohe a while later to fill up again and have my first drink all day. We then turned left to go onto a road that takes you north past the Wairere Boulders – worth a family visit if you’re up that way.

Some of the road was gravel but by now I didn’t mind I came out on SH1 about 5.00pm Friday knock-off time with a 4WD I’d just past charging along behind me. I understood he’d know the roads as he actually drove pretty well, until we both slowed down on SH1.

Quine Rd Sealed Road Hill Climb Tahuna (near Morrinsville)

Sunday April 14th 2013 Course length approx 1.1km.Flattish start into moderate uphill, fairly tight corners, very little straight. Mostly suited to classics, post classics, motards and ‘clubman’ riders. Clubman is for Road legal bikes to WOF level.

Pre-entrys only, no entries on day. MNZ licence required. Day Licences available.

Entry fee $50 per rider. (You can ride more than one bike, but still only get same number of runs) Compulsory pre practice track walk for ALL riders after briefing.

Classes for Classic, Post Classic, Motard and Clubman (for road registered and road legal bikes).

No prize money, trophies for fastest time of day in Open and Road Legal categories.

Entries close last post 1 April 2013 LIMITED TO FIRST 40 ENTRYS. Each rider will get a minimum 1 familiarisation/practice run and 4-8 timed runs if time permits.

Bikes and riders gear as per MNZ rules.

Sign on 8.30 Briefing 9.00, Compulsory track walk 9.30 1st run (practice) 10.30.

He kept up, until we got to the Mangamuka Range, the one road I was hanging out for on this ride – and for over 20 years as I used to be a Northland area sales rep, but in a car. This is THE best bike road in the entire country in my opinion.

The road had patches on to start and for the 2nd time that day I lost the front wheel for a moment. But it all came good and I took in the moment, turned the throttle and went as hard as I’ve ridden on a road bike for I can’t remember when. It was a shit-hot road at the right time of day with cambers and excellent tarseal.

Just after the other side I turned right onto kitchen road, to find I was wrong from the last time I did the road a long time ago as I had another 15km or so of gravel to get through.

This time it was real thick and slow going. One thing I re-learned about riding on gravel is to always pay attention. I was caught out twice looking around only to find myself a metre or so too late for braking and off line.

The end came though and another 15km down the road was the Mangonui Hotel, where I pulled in about 6.30pm, feeling not too bad considering the exact 600km days ride.

We all had a good night at the bar but everyone went different ways on Saturday. I go to Kerikeri every year during my summer holidays so in the end I left Colin to it and headed up to the Cape, again on my own. It took all day as I stopped heaps to take photos of all things old and interesting (anyone know of any really old cars, bikes or tractors languishing in overgrown grass etc let me know), but the road to the Cape was everything John Simpson said. He’d ridden it the day before with dozens of BSA club members. Excellent roads, no cops, no hassles, it was all good. About an hours stop to soak in the Pacific Ocean meeting the Tasman Sea was worth it and back to Mangonui I headed.

I stopped at the Hohoura pub for a beer and met up with several like-minded blokes from Auckland, the same guys I’d waved to a couple of times on the roads north the previous day!

I couldn’t go past the Waipapakauri pub without a pint too, so that was almost as enjoyable.

I was late for out Thai booking but I’m thankful Steve kept my seat for me!

After that we all retired to -12-

the top verandah pretty much for the evening, knackered I turned in about 11.30pm.

Sunday dawned and many of us took in the serene sunrise colours as the sun tried to break through the cloud. We all had planned to leave by 8.30am as we had a long way to get home, however in the end everyone left at slightly different times! Only Colin and myself leaving on schedule.

A few things caught my photographers eye along the way and I owe Col a beer or two for being so patient!

Being a bit late we missed the rain on the Mangamuka’s however the road remained wet.

We eventually arrived halfway down the south side to find a Bimota undergoing a selflightening process, except the engine needs a computer in order to run. It’s the size of a bus, and was hanging down in the rain before Jason noticed his bike started ‘missing’. It looked like a crash scene with all the bits off, and just down the road the rest of the club was helping Ray make his 2nd puncture repair on the side of the road.

Needing to get home by 6.00pm I offered to accompany Ray straight home in SH1 instead of via the Rawene Ferry and the West Coast Road and Dargaville. Ray was going well until just south of Kawakawa (50 odd km north of Whangarei) his rear tyre went flat again. This time on a long uphill section with nowhere to take the bike off the road.

We tried our best to locate a Whangarei bike shop for a Sunday emergency pick-up but the one shop with a cell phone wasn’t answering! We tried several other alternatives without success so resorted to waving down a truck or trailer. A helpful Auckland smalltruck driver drove past, turned around and picked Ray’s bike up. It had a pretty high deck so wasn’t easy lifting it up, and of all things I lost them once we got to a Whangarei service station like we’d planned.

I spent half an hour riding all around the city and could raise Ray on the phone, so I was left no choice but to head south, hoping they stopped at a gas station along the way.

It was not to be and the brunch we’d all planned to have at Rawene turned into a late 2.00pm crappy pie at a gas station.

With traffic increasing heading into Wellsford, -13-

I took the Hellensville road and planted boot, following our route back and making the city via the Western Motorway an hour later! More gas at the Bombay’s, tired arms, sore ears from the constant wind noise and a sore arse meant the last 77km were the hardest.

Home at 5.35pm in time for a shower and a birthday dinner.

I later learned the ‘West Coasters’ had their share of tribulations too and got home about 9.30pm!

The score was one Hawk, almost one sheep, 2 small birds, many beers, a great time, a Honda back tyre, one bike-to-bike tow rope, and if anyone wants a cheap Bimota you have to collect it from a farm shed in the Far North.

This isn’t saying much compared to many club members who clock up really big miles (which I’ve also done before – another lifetime ago), but this ride was my longest ride for about 25 years or more. I needed it really, so thanks to Steve smith for organising it, I think we all enjoyed the ride immensely. Terry

Far North Ride Friday It was perfect weather when we gathered to leave from the Club Rooms on Friday morning. The ride through Auckland was as usual, dull. However after mustering at Kumeu and meeting up with Bob and Elaine we were off.

The first part of the trip we took the back roads through Kaukapkapa to Welsford. Everyone was enjoying themselfs, the road was great, smiles on everyones faces. The adventure had begun. Next up the main road to turn of at Brynderyn for our lunch at Mangaturoto. This year we were all served and fed good food without the delays we had last year. After an hour we were off again and up the road to turn off onto the Paparoa/Oakleigh road. This is a wonderful piece of road on a Motor Cycle.

I started in the lead but was soon overtaken by some of the faster riders. Then it was back to the main road to Oakleigh north to turn off at Otaika to Maungatapere where some with smaller gas tanks gassed up. Through Maungatapere onto Kaikohe, this part of the trip is a long leg, but what a great piece of road it is, sweeping and tight curves, motorcycle heaven.

We all gassed up at Kaikohe then had a break under some shady trees just north of town. Next we did a few back roads around Lake Omapere . This year we didn’t get confused at this point as per previous year, Steve Walter had noted all the route through here and was in the lead, Fantastic. So we got onto SH10 and up the road to Mangonui. I think this is a great part of the route, very historic location. Man I was hanging out for a cold beer when we arrived. It had been a trouble free ride. Many happy faces. Kevin and Brenda had arrived earlier they came via a different route going through Whangarei. We all relaxed and had the famous fish n chips for tea.

Saturday.

We all went our own ways today. With an idea to meet up at the Karikari Estate Winery, Evelyn and myself went for a swim on a stunning beach with silica sand on the Karikari Peninsula then went up to 90 Mile Beach and road on the beach for a few k’s, it was great because I had never done this before. Then back to the winery for wine sampling. Only Ken -18-

was there and later Lance arrived, Never mind, we enjoyed the place on our own.

It’s a fantastic setting overlooking the peninsula. Back to the hotel and everyone had stories of their day. Some went to Kerikeri. A real good day.

We had a very good meal that night in a Thai restaurant everyone attended. Thank’s Horse and Brenda for organising that. Back to the hotel after a walk round one of the scenic places in NZ. Later it was drinks on the varanda and Gentlemans lounge.

Sunday An early start was the call. We left about 8.30am and through Kaitaia and up the Mangamuka’s, unfortunately the road was wet so it was fairly arduous on the Transalp with pillion. We got to the turn off to the Rawene Ferry and waited, no Jason or Ray, so back we went with trepidation. First we found Ray, he had a flat tyre on Saturday and thought he had fixed it however not so. Jason was futher up the road with a water problem in the Bimota computer. Bob and Colin had the means to fix Rays tyre and set about it, Jason arrived with a story that his bike computer was full of water but he was going. So off we went except Ray and Terry who decided to head straight for home. We arrived at the Ferry just as it was leaving. So it was decided even though it was early 11.30 and some of us had no breakfast we had lunch at Rawene. that was interesting because the Cafe was on piers over the harbour. We had a walk around town after and had a look at the old Court House.

So off we went next stop Tane Mahuta, the great tree in the Waipoua forest. Then onto Dargaville. We waited at the Blar Blar Cafe, then I got a text from Bob, Jason had broken down again and Bob was going to tow him to Dargaville. (Legend ) I was amazed as it was about 60k’s. Man I was impressed, when sure enough they rolled into town. Bob you the man. Luckily Ken had a cousin in Dargaville where we were able to leave Jasons bike, who then got on the back with Chris. So it was back on the road, as it was pretty late by now we came straight home. I think I arrived home about 9pm .Buggered. But happy as. It had been another excellent adventure with my Mates from the Hamilton Motorcycle Club.

Steve S PS. Next day I learned Ray’s tyre went flat again about 50k’s north of Whangarei and got a lift with a truck, stayed the night there and returned home Monday.

HMCC Winter Road Race Series? YES it’s on!

Your committee has been hard at work, setting up a proposed winter series, consisting of 2 rounds at Hampton Downs. No other clubs are running anything there over winter , so we feel it is a good time to fill the gap.

We will be looking for riders and MARSHALLS. These are the proposed dates;

23d June and the 4th of August THE COMMITTEE HAS APPROVED THE PROPOSAL AND WILL COMMENCE PLANNING THE EVENTS FORTHWITH Shane Lawrey is spearheading the planning and will be assistd by Ray Cox and Jay Lawrence (lovingly referred to as The Race Committee).
