t doesn’t matter how big your kitchen is. Since we tend to spread out and use however much storage space we have, sooner or later, everyone runs out of space. If your kitchen is short on storage options, there’s no need to embark on a renovation. Instead, consider these great ideas from Consumer Reports for adding more options for stashing kitchen supplies and groceries. A ROLLING KITCHEN CART You might be considering installing a swanky kitchen island, but that can cost big bucks. Instead, invest in a stylish rolling cart that provides many of the same advantages at a fraction of the cost. When it comes to carts, you can get as fancy as you’d like—many have fold-down tables and hideaway stools, for example, providing you with extra seating options when needed.

CABINET ORGANIZERS You can get more mileage out of your existing cabinet space by retrofitting them with organizers. Install a Lazy Susan in a corner, for example, so you don’t lose track of items buried in the back. Roll-out drawers in base cabinets allow you to pack more in and easily access whatever you may need. If you’ve got a large pantry, install tiered shelves to give you an at-a-glance view of kitchen staples like canned goods, spices and baking supplies. Wreaths made out of pinecones are not only popular for decorating during the fall season; they’ll also exude a fresh aroma that screams fall anytime someone walks through the front door.

It’s also important that you don’t neglect the exterior of your home. With a plethora of fall offerings available at your local gardening store, including mums, pumpkins and gourds, creating an eyecatching fall garden out front is an easy way to incorporate a festive atmosphere into your landscape.

When it comes to the inside of the house, the dining room and kitchen are perfect areas for incorporating fall colors by way of freshly picked flowers or even a bowl of bright red apples. You can even mix berries or colorful leaves in a planter to bring some nature into the space. Corn is another popular decorating item that can be incorporated into many areas of the home. Not only can it be placed in a bowl, it can be hung up in a tasteful design or used as the centerpiece of a display.

If your lawn is flush with trees, take the time to rake regularly and clean up any branches or debris that might litter the ground after heavy rains and wind whip through the area.

If you’re looking for a more subtle touch, the addition of plaid or fall-colored fabric is a great way to liven up a living room or family room. From table runners to pillows and even simple throws, the options are endless. Something as simple as placing a plant in the corner of a room will also go a long way toward livening up the space.

As Halloween approaches, take care not to go overboard with decorations. While spider webs and animatronics are festive, the last thing you want is for Halloween decorations to become the focal point of your home when prospective buyers drop in to visit. A trendy interior door option that uses externally mounted hardware to allow the door to slide over an opening without taking the space needed for a swinging door. As the end of the year draws near and the holiday season creeps up, you may be in the mood for a few quick touch-ups before entertaining. But sprucing up for holiday guests doesn’t have to mean excessive packaging or waste as you look for new items. All you need is a bit of inspiration and forethought.


Here are five easy and cost-effective ways to get your home ready for the holidays while minimizing your impact on the environment:

A FRESH COAT OF PAINT.

Most people think painting should be done in the spring or summer when windows can be opened due to the toxic nature of paint products. Not true anymore. Most paints are now low-VOC or non-VOC which means little to no odour and fewer chemicals. And all brands of paint now contain a primer built in so long gone are the days of tedious priming, then painting. Simply patch the small holes with a quick-dry mud, use a light sanding block and then spot-prime with the new colour before rolling on the first coat. When your paint can is empty, simply let the paint dry and toss it and the lid into the recycling bin (it must be dry). Also, do away with disposable tray liners. Wall paint is made with latex so let the paint dry then peel it out of the tray and toss in the trash for much less waste.

MAKE AN OUTSIDE URN OR DECORATIVE CENTREPIECE.

Urns and centrepieces are still very popular, and some florists offer workshops so you can create the exact look you want while enjoying an evening out with friends. If creating one doesn’t pique your interest, you can pre-order for pick-up with the size and specifications you need. A custom urn or centrepiece also makes a unique hostess gift and using live branches and berries means disposal in the green bin or compost when the holidays are over.

REPLACE YOUR MATS. The first few steps your guests take into your home serve as an introduction to your living space. This should not only give

a warm welcome but also set a relaxed tone and be clutter-free. Keeping the entrance way neat and clean during the winter months can be challenging. Try choosing a festive mat that offers a barrier between wet footwear and your hardwood or tile floors. Since mats are replaced every year, choose from a manufacturer that uses recycled or eco-friendly materials.

DON’T LET YOUR PIPES BURST: Tips to Avoid Winter Pipe Damage Now that it’s the season of frosty weather, homeowners all over could begin dealing with frozen pipes. If your pipes freeze, not only are you in a bind with your water, but the damage to your home could be expensive to repair. The following are some helpful, trusted tips to prevent pipes from freezing: MAINTAIN 55 DEGREES OR HIGHER Even when leaving the residence for extended periods of time, maintaining a temperature throughout the home of 55 degrees or higher will help add an extra level of security to the plumbing. Any increase you incur on the utility bill will still be less than the cost of typical repairs for burst water pipes or the damage it can cause to the rest of the home. USE PIPE INSULATION PRODUCTS Installing specific pipe insulation products is a great precautionary measure. Pipe sleeves, heat tape and heat cable are all available for home use and can add an extra layer of protection. LEAVE FAUCETS AT A TRICKLE Consider leaving faucets open at a trickle during the coldest temperatures. Even a small amount of water moving through your pipes will help prevent water from freezing in place.

CHECK INSULATION Homeowners should check the insulation in and around the house and identify any potential trouble areas. Filling in or adding insulation to attics, crawl spaces, basements and any other areas containing pipes may be necessary. Make sure to also seal any gaps that may be found in the home’s foundation or siding. LEAVE CABINETS OPEN Kitchen and bathroom sink cabinets are best left open during the coldest parts of winter. This allows the warm air circulating in the home to enter and help warm the plumbing under the sink. To further make sure your pipes are ready for winter, or if you suspect there is a potential issue, contact your local plumber so they can come out and inspect them right away. Additionally, there’s many other reasons to tune up your system: Prevent frozen pipes. It’s not unusual for homeowners to lower the thermostat while they’re away from home. However, residents should maintain a regular temperature in their home—around 65 degrees—to avoid bursting or frozen pipes.

It prolongs the life of your furnace. Regular maintenance can keep your furnace working at maximum efficiency and actually lengthen the life of the equipment. And you might not know this but skipping annual maintenance can often void a manufacturer’s warranty. So not only are you hurting the system, you’re potentially hurting your wallet. It helps you stay safe. Most furnaces are gas-burning, which produces carbon monoxide. A leak could prove dangerous or even fatal. During routine maintenance, a technician will take preventative measures to ensure this can’t happen, such as changing the filter and giving the furnace a thorough cleaning. Install a carbon monoxide detector as well if you don’t have one already. So, before the cold weather comes in the coming months, contact your local heating company to come perform a furnace or boiler check-up. You’ll thank yourself later.
