2020 Hammer Annual Report

2020 ANNUAL REPORT

A Year of Challenges, Opportunities, and Hope To work in this field, we have to be ready for anything. No two days are ever the same. However, we had never given much thought to a worldwide pandemic. It seemed unlikely that we would ever have to face that. Yet here we are. 2020 has become the year of the pandemic, where almost everything we do had to be adjusted and changed. Words like “protocol” and “sanitize” became daily mantras of our staff. We had to figure out how to help the people we support have meaningful lives without jobs and day programs, without Special Olympics, and outings into the community. We all stayed home. We learned to play games, Zoom with our friends, and celebrate drive-bybirthdays on the front lawn. We learned that family is really bigger than biology and that it is possible to have fun without always going somewhere. Donors and volunteers stepped up and made masks and dinners and donated much-needed funds to purchase all the new equipment that we needed. We were reminded every day how generous and creative our friends are. We began to see more clearly where we could be even better. A Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) council was formed of 12 employees across Hammer who are working diligently to make sure all employees and the people we support are welcome and have the room and support to grow. We were approached in the fall by Northeast Residence, (NER), another provider that works in the east metro and shares the passion and values of Hammer. They believed that we could both be better if we joined forces. After three months of meetings and sharing who we were, we agreed. On January 1, 2021, Hammer acquired NER and we began to work together. While continuing to operate separately (for now), we share much on a daily basis. We remain so grateful to our staff, donors, volunteers, families and community members. We have shown once again that Hammer is a remarkable place. We are humbled to be part of the family and grateful that you are as well. Blessings,

John Estrem, Hammer, CEO

I just want you to know how very much I appreciate this Hammer Travel volunteer opportunity! I look forward to every trip with such joy. It has truly enriched my life to be a small part of the lives of the people you serve. I come back from every trip brimming with great stories for my family and I have learned so much about living in the moment and not caring what others think. To be kind no matter what. Cannot wait to travel again! — Cindi L. The Volunteer department has been so positive and caring to all of us volunteers during these times. During my first year of one-on-one volunteering, you sent me a cool Hammer refrigerator magnet for my 6-month service anniversary, and a water bottle for my 1-year anniversary. You even sent me a few handwritten notes! All the time and effort you put into recognizing your volunteers is unbelievable! — Brooke V.

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) In April 2020, the Federal Government established the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). This created a large pool of loans for small and medium-sized business and nonprofits. The purpose of the loans was to help businesses survive and retain employees during those early chaotic days of the pandemic. Hammer qualified for and received 2.5 million dollars as part of this program. There were many restrictions on the use of this money. The main purpose was to keep people employed and we were able to use it for enhanced and hazard pay during limited times for our Direct Care employees (among a few other purposes). This program also has a provision where we can ask for forgiveness of the loan, effectively turning it into a grant. In January, we submitted an application for forgiveness of the loan and are waiting to hear the answer. This loan was critical to our ability to continue to provide quality services during the pandemic.

Sam moved into his Hammer apartment in September of 2019. His parents, Gary and Peg, both jumped in as advocates for Sam and Hammer. They shared their Hammer story far and wide. They invited friends to Reach for Ralph and asked them to support Hammer too. What an amazing response! Thank you! When you share your Hammer story far and wide it helps. Thanks to all of our Hammer family who have been our partners for so many years and especially this past year.

Individuals and caregivers experienced COVID-19 in real ways. When employees could not be in the homes, they stepped up and did what they could, like shopping for groceries or checking in with one another as they experienced significant loss. Just as our caregivers showed up and did extraordinary work, you stood by us during a year of so much uncertainty, united in our mission to protect vulnerable people. Thank you for standing by us all.

Knowing what was important to Mom was one less thing to worry about in the midst of all the sadness and chaos. Having a plan in place to follow provided us with the peace of mind to know we were honoring Mom’s wishes and continuing her legacy of providing for our brother Joe. — Betsy Pankonin 23
