2021 ANNUAL REPORT
Pages 3-21
Pages 22-27
Thank You for Supporting Full Lives! When I was eight years old when we moved to a new house. All I understood at the time was that I would be attending a new school and my friend, who lived two houses away, would now be too far away to see very often. I was not excited but did not really have a vote in the matter. In the end, it worked out very well. I met many new friends, some whom I am still close to after over 50 years. Change can be hard in the moment but can open us up to new and wonderful things. It all started with a phone call in late summer of 2020. “Was Hammer Residences open to a journey with Northeast Residence to see if we wanted to come together?” The timing was far from perfect. We were five months into a global pandemic, still struggling to figure out many things about our work in this new world. We decided to say yes, and it has been a fantastic journey. Legally we remain two separate but linked organizations. Each day we are coming closer together. We already share values and a common mission. Currently we are working to align systems and processes as we move to becoming one legal entity and are learning that we are truly better together. We remain focused on the people we support and the dedicated staff who provide that support every day. This annual report is a snapshot of our work and finances in 2021. Through it all, we remain grateful for our supporters, partners, and friends. We do not do this work alone. We are delighted you are on the journey with us. Blessings,
John Estrem, CEO, Hammer Residences and Northeast Residence

available to help 100 Hammer caregivers with needed car repairs to ensure they could get to work each day to support the individuals who rely on them.
Quality Caregiving is About Caring and Giving Malik, a young manager at Hammer, started during the pandemic in January of 2021 as a Direct Support Professional (DSP). He has a natural gift of connecting and learned quickly that understanding the needs of the four guys at Cedarwood group home, and building relationships with their families, is the most important aspect of his work. An aspiring healthcare leader, Malik completed Hammer’s Program Manager in Training (PMIT) and participated in the Mentor Program. Fast forward to January 2022, one year from his start date and just a few months after graduating from the University of Minnesota. Malik is now managing three Hammer group homes, leading the staffing teams that support 14 individuals. Significant changes in the workforce have led Hammer to change the roles of managers by adding additional homes and responsibilities. Malik and all our Program Managers, Direct Support Professionals, Nurses, and Hammer’s Training department are all supported by you, our donors, whose
financial support makes up the difference between the basics and the quality care Hammer is known for. Thank you!
Sometimes supporting Robert means enjoying a Vikings game, win or lose. With staffing shortages, these opportunities have been few and far between. Malik Mohamud is one of over 300 caregivers at Hammer who contribute to provide quality care, every day.
CEDARWOOD SUNDAY BRUNCH Some say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The guys at Cedarwood agree. As COVID-19 guidelines loosened up, Charlie, Gabe, Malik, Michael, and Robert finally got out to one of their favorite brunch locations, the Original Pancake House. YUM! Donations to the Quality of Life and Home Activities Funds helped to make sure everyone could get out into the community and enjoy a special meal.

Volunteers Once again, 2021 saw our volunteers stepping up and in to help the individuals we support live life to the fullest! Here are some of the highlights from the year. Sherman had his dream come true as pro bono volunteer Cathy Gates helped him apply for a U.S. Patent application for his “Swappers” slippers invention. She also worked with partners in the UK to ensure that Sherman received a German Utility Model for his idea and is now officially recognized as an inventor. Eagle Scout Andrew Deffner answered the call from the women at Queensland when they asked for a catio for their feline friend, “Buster.” Along with the catio, Andrew also made Adirondack chairs so both Buster and the individuals at Queensland could sit outside and enjoy the sunshine together.
Cathy and Sherman
Each year KP at Arrive Apartments buys an annual pass to Valley Fair. She loves to go as often as possible. Razia Edwards was working toward a Human Services degree and wanted the experience of working with someone with a disability. She also happened to love riding roller coasters. During the summer, they spent 18 hours of fun at the park! Our Special Event volunteers ensured that the Hammer Lambert Golf Open ran smoothly. Braving the 94-degree temperatures, they assisted with registration, the silent auction, and ran the games at the tees. Even though it was hot, they all served with smiles on their faces.

Autumn arrived with volunteers raking and bagging leaves at 13 of our homes during our Annual Fall Yard Clean Up. Volunteers also helped put smiles on the faces of those participating in our Trunk or Treat and Haunted House. In addition, volunteers made and donated meals to our Hammer and NER homes, were virtual Bingo callers, Hammer Idol judges, and created beautiful holiday cards for each person we support. Volunteers also made holiday cookies, assisted at the Flu Clinic and delivered the Thanksgiving meals to our homes.

We are so grateful for each of our volunteers who have donated their time and have made such an impact for those we support at Hammer.

Wayne and Kevin have been roommates for years at their 13th Ave home. Wayne recently moved to Hammer’s Broadway home. His increased needs as he ages made Broadway a good fit. It is accessible, has wide hallways and doorways, and everything Wayne needs on one floor. Being able to provide the individuals we serve with a continuity of care as they age means they (and their families) can rely on a lifetime of care with us.

Our work only happens thanks to our incredible team of caregivers, nurses, managers, volunteers, donors, and more, including our Central Office team. Each and every one of our staff are valued for the skills, talent, and heart they bring to their work.
Just a note to the Vicksburg staff to let you know how much we appreciate the support you provide for Tony. For a long time before he moved to his apartment, his dream was to have his own place to live. Each of you makes his dream come true on a daily basis. —Ruth and Noel

Employee Giving Our employees give of themselves in so many ways. They pick up extra shifts when needed, which keep them away from their own families. They continue their education to provide the individuals we support with the person-centered care they need. They volunteer at various events throughout the year. And they provide their own financial gifts to support our mission. To our skilled, caring, and dedicated Direct Support Professionals, Assistant Program Managers, Program Managers, and our Central Office team, thank you for all you do! Legacy Givers We are grateful for your commitment to lifetime giving. You are vital to the well-being of those served by Hammer, both today and as they age. In order to enable those we serve to “age in place,” we need your help to provide for the significant costs to renovate our homes, skilled nursing care, and resources not covered by insurance.

Including Hammer in our will was logical and easy. Why would we leave an inheritance for our daughter and omit our son, Chan? Hammer provides a wonderful home for him and certainly needs the additional funds above and beyond the normal governmental income. Including Hammer in our estate plans will help ensure that his wonderful home will be there for Chan long after we are gone. This was a “no brainer!” Chris and Peggy Klug with their son, Chan.

Staff members and the ladies supported at NER’s Hale home enjoyed fall festivities.
Director of Finance Program Compliance Manager Maintenance Staff DSP DSP Support Specialist Support Specialist DSP DSP DSP DSP DSP Float DSP DSP Lead DSP DSP DSP Staff has helped the people DSP
supported stay busy in their homes by doing puzzles, games, and craft projects.
Staff Kept Everyone Engaged, Even Throughout Quarantine! While the ongoing pandemic continued to limit being out in the community doing the things we enjoy, the staff at our homes found creative ways to keep the individuals we serve engaged, active, and safe. One example is the team from our County Road F home.
Unfortunately, the pandemic also meant the ladies wouldn’t be able to go to summer camp in 2021. “While it was sad news, we did need to talk about it,” Jeanne says. “We listed the things that we would miss about summer camp and then decided we could make most of these things happen at home.” One of the ladies made a sign for their “County Road F Camp.” The group tie-dyed T-shirts, read scary camp stories, played yard games, sang songs, hiked the neighborhood on a scavenger hunt, and enjoyed evenings by their new fire pit. One of the families donated firewood and another filled a cooler with the makings for smores.
Sandy enjoying some relaxing time in the pool on a sunny summer afternoon.
At one point, COVID-19 required the home’s four ladies to be quarantined to their rooms. This would be stressful for anyone. “We told them we would figure out ways to get through this together,” Program Manager, Jeanne Ottman says. Staff looked for ways to help the ladies feel more comfortable while quarantining in their bedrooms including bringing in TVs, rocking chairs, and lap trays from their own homes. “Some of our staff have been with NER long term and truly care about the ladies and strive to enhance their lives,” Jeanne says. “The stability of our staffing and their knowledge of what everyone needed was crucial in weathering the new ‘Pandemic Life.’”
One of the staff brought over an inflatable pool so the ladies could splash their feet and enjoy water play. The ladies learned that although they were disappointed about not going away to camp, they were able to do something about it and that staff were there to support their ideas. People supported at County Road F stayed active at home by moving and shaking to the music.
“I appreciate the heart and stability of the staff here,” Jeanne says. “We all work together to help enhance the opportunities for four beautiful lives to blossom.”
