A PROMISING FUTURE LIES AHEAD

It’s hard to believe it’s been 11 years since I began my journey as CEO of Hammer. Back in 2012, I remember calling my dad and sharing that I had accepted the position. I was thrilled to find my way back to my life’s passion of supporting people with disabilities (something I began doing in high school). Life has a way of coming full circle without us realizing it. I am continually honored and grateful to be part of this organization.

Since our humble beginnings in 1923, our mission has been to create opportunities for people with disabilities. At the time, our founder, Alvina Hammer saw a need for children with developmental disabilities to learn and grow. She started by teaching children in her living room. With persistence and dedication to her vision, Alvina later purchased a piece of land along Highway 12 in Wayzata and built the Hammer School, which eventually became Hammer Residences. Over the years, the organization has continued to evolve, innovate, and grow, never losing sight of Alvina’s vision to help people with disabilities live life to the fullest.

Today, we continue to expand our programs and grow as an organization. Effective January 1, 2023, our two-year-long merger with Northeast Residence became official. We are now “Hammer & NER.” Our combined staff of 550 people, whether they are in the office or providing direct support, work hard each day to ensure we are meeting the needs of the approximately 360 people with disabilities who live in our homes and apartments. We offer a wide array of support services, case management, and care coordination.

Our 2022 Annual Report is a snapshot of our work in partnership with you, our generous supporters, volunteers, partners, and friends. We are continually thankful for YOU and all you do to help us live our mission.

Blessings,

We’ve got a lot to celebrate in 2023!

We invite you to help us celebrate our Anniversary Year in 2023! Hammer is celebrating 100 years and NER is celebrating 50 years! To learn more about

what is happening in this monumental year for Hammer & NER, please visit Hammer.org/anniversary.

1,088 incredible givers, that’s you, contributed $1,744,887 so that each person living with a disability at Hammer & NER had the best support possible from committed caregivers. Your generosity helps people purchase basics like new boots, covers excess living expenses like sky-rocketing apartment rent, pays for new glasses, dental care, and other medical expenses.

Your gifts help us to focus on meeting the needs of the people we support. With support from staff, volunteers, donors, and families, the people who live in our homes and apartments are given the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest.

Thank You.

YOUR GIFTS UNLOCK POSSIBILITIES

Jackie has a beautiful and bright presence and is quick to smile. At the age of 79, Jackie has been supported by Hammer for more than 20 years. Proud of the life she has created, she is now happily retired and enjoys listening to music, doing puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune. Jackie has a close relationship with long-time house manager Jill Kunze who is always watching for changing behaviors since Jackie isn’t always able to communicate clearly what she is feeling because of her dementia and developmental disabilities.

In June of 2022, something was obviously bothering Jackie. Together, she and Jill identified the source of discomfort was a sudden and significant pain in her mouth. It turns out Jackie had an infected tooth that required the quick attention of both a dentist and endodontist at the cost of almost $2,000. Fortunately for Jackie, generous donors, including the Delta Dental Foundation of Minnesota, have thoughtfully provided Hammer & NER with Quality of Life funds for both routine dental care and dental emergencies not covered by insurance.

“So many dentists are no longer taking medical assistance (MA), and those who do accept MA have significant wait times. When someone we care for is in pain, knowing we have the resources to act quickly is a huge relief,” says Jenna Neal, Director of Health Services.

Since 2015, the Delta Dental Foundation of Minnesota has donated over $200,000 to Hammer Residences. Funds are used for routine dental care including annual visits since MA only covers one visit every 12 months, oral health tools like electric toothbrushes and, when needed, funds for larger dental expenses including root canals to preserve a tooth. In 2023, thanks to Delta Dental Foundation of Minnesota, we will be increasing our dental awareness training for our staff, helping us provide even better quality of care.

2022 EMPLOYEE EXCELLENCE

Knowing that our mission only happens with the incredible caregivers; teachers, counselors, and confidantes who show up every day to walk along side the people we support, you have contributed mightily to those caregivers. You are among 258 generous contributors who gave $446,171 to support our employees with funds for emergency car repair needs, educational scholarships, enhanced training, and a little extra in their paycheck after working extra because of the employee shortage. Your gifts supporting employee excellence in 2022 helped us educate, retain, and advance employees during this critical time.

In 2022 $47,748.88 was granted to 96 people for the Car Repair Program.

Education Grants were awarded to 7 staff members in 2022.

PM for Tyler/Merrimac

The Education Grant at Hammer & NER is something that I have always wanted to apply for to further my education. I applied and was accepted, which had me thinking that this was the right time for me to further my education. The grant has given me the opportunity to continue my undergraduate degree in Human Service and Disability Studies; a degree which will help me improve the quality-of-care support I give to the people I support at our Tyler home in Plymouth.

Thank you to those people that go above and beyond to make these opportunities available for the staff to better equip themselves, as laws and regulations change constantly in this line of work.

VOLUNTEERS

Many thanks to our volunteers who once again stepped in to help Hammer & NER accomplish our mission to assist the individuals we support to live life to the fullest.

Our new Cooks in the Kitchen (CIK) program became a popular and impactful group volunteer activity. In 2022, we held CIK 45 times making 80 meals each week. This comes to a grand total of 3,600 meals! This program helps those houses that may be short staffed, allowing them to focus on personal care for the individuals they support, rather than cooking.

Our Hammer Travel volunteers assisted on 27 trips, helping our guests enjoy the experience of travel to a variety of locations. Volunteers helped with driving, mobilizing the groups, riding rides, and engaging guests, all while enjoying themselves too!

Our special event volunteers made sure our celebrations ran smoothly. Over 70 volunteers participated at both our Reach for Ralph gala and our Family Day Picnic. Volunteers also stepped in to help at our NER Luau, Spring and Fall Breakfasts, and our annual Haunted House. They brought with them excitement and skills to make for marvelous events.

Fall Yard Clean Up brought out the nature enthusiasts as groups of volunteers raked and bagged

leaves at a number of our homes. Students from our local high schools pitched in during Make a Difference Day. Many organizations return each autumn to help at the houses and do so as a wonderful team builder for their employees. Plus, it is just plain fun!

We call them by many names, like direct service volunteers, buddies, and companions. But to those we support, they are called, “friend.” We are grateful to the over 50 volunteers who meet with the individuals we support to take them out into the community to have some fun, or visit at the house or apartment. Having unpaid companions is critical to the well being of the individuals we support and helps them to engage in the wider world.

We are very fortunate to have over 400 volunteers who donate their time and in doing so, make such a great impact on Hammer & NER and those we serve.

Greetings,

This donation is in memory of my sister, Heidi Anne Hirschoff, who died in 2014 after living in a Hammer Residence for several years.

Your publication, “Discoveries,” appeared in my mailbox, I paged through it glancing at each photograph. When I finished, I felt a pang of disappointment and momentarily wondered why. It came to me in a flash. I’d been looking for a photo of Heidi. I was missing my sister. I used to spot her in magazine photos from the schools she attended. I decided to donate to her memory this year.

Later, I paged through the publication again. And this time I did see her. I saw her in Frank’s face on the cover and again inside. I saw her dancing (like she loved to do) on page 9. I saw her beaming (like she used to) in the photos on page 14. I see her in the face and body of every person with Down Syndrome that I see on the street or in restaurants. They are all my siblings; in a way, they’re part of my extended family.

More than that, she’s on my mind when I look at the photos of Hammer staff. I searched for names of the people who cared for Heidi. I remember their tireless, loving ways with her. I thank all of you for your continuing care for people like my sister.

YOUR GIFT TODAY SUPPORTS TOMORROW!

WE APPRECIATE ALL OF OUR DONORS!

22 TOGETHER
WE ARE BETTER!

MARY ANNE IS LIVING A FULL LIFE

Mary Anne was born into a large farm family, the youngest of five girls and two boys. “Mary Anne was very active growing up,” says Becky Bollinger, her niece and guardian. Becky is one ofour Program Compliance Managers. “She loved basketball and running.” After graduating from high school, Mary Anne attended the DAC in Sandstone. As Mary Anne’s mother grew older, the family knew Mary Anne would need to move to a group home. Twenty-six years ago, they found Northeast Residence (NER).

“We heard so many good things about NER,” Becky says. “My mom called it the ‘Cadillac’ of group homes.” The transition away from her family home went well as Mary Anne moved into NER’s 43rd St. home in 1997 and then into the Hale home in 1999. Mary Anne became good friends with the other three women in the home. She’s also close to the staff and their families. “She’ll come home with me for Christmas Eve and then go over to Qadira’s (DSP) home for Christmas,” Becky says. Mary Anne considers all of them her family. Last fall, Qadira also took Mary Anne up to Duluth for the weekend. She loved staying in a hotel and seeing the sights.

“She is living her best life. She’s living the life she wants. It’s because she’s living at Hale that she’s able to do that.”

A farm girl at heart, Mary Anne loves animals, particularly George and Gracie, Hale’s resident cats. She loves to look out the window at birds and keeps the bird feeder in the front yard stocked. She also has one outside her bedroom window.

Mary Anne works at the Merrick day program and loves bringing home a paycheck. She likes to be busy and engaged. Today, at the age of 60, Mary Anne’s health is good. Becky is hopeful she can age in place at Hale as long as possible. For her 60th birthday, staff threw Mary Anne a party and invited several other homes to join in. “She had cake and that made her very happy,” Becky says. “She is living her best life. She’s living the life she wants. It’s because she’s living at Hale that she’s able to do that.”

“As a long-time employee, and a family member of a person who lives at one of our east metro homes, I have a unique insight into how our organization impacts those we support. Last year, I made a gift in honor of my aunt’s 60th birthday. I know she enjoys her home and has quality staff supporting her. Making a gift in her honor was a great way to support her and her friends.”

We are thrilled to have our daughter living in a Hammer & NER home, so we did not hesitate to include Hammer & NER in our estate plan. It gives us great comfort to know that our daughter’s needs will be met after we are no longer able to care for her. We know Hammer & NER is a community that lifts everyone. Our hearts are grateful.
