GRATEFUL TO OUR HAMMER FAMILY

IN THIS ISSUE

A

t Hammer, we place the highest value on our relationships. We do not just provide a service; we stay connected to those we support and those who support us. This is why I came to Hammer, and this is why I stay. To me it is the relationships that provide the color and depth to daily life. This year, we have all had to learn new ways to stay connected. A global pandemic has made us stay some distance from each other and still strive to be in relationship. It has not been easy, but it has caused us to stretch and grow. We all long for the day when we can return to “easy” interaction with those we care about. It has not all been negative. Getting creative has allowed us to use technology and other ways to be with each other. Our Reach for Ralph fundraiser is a good example. While we missed being in the same room with each other, going virtual allowed those in different parts of the country to be present at our event. We got to “see” people we never would have seen in the usual format.

We have found other ways to stay connected. A couple weeks ago, a friend of Hammer called me and offered to drop off six-dozen donuts. Another staff member and I drove to houses and invited everyone into the front yard to thank staff for their service. We have had front yard birthday parties, virtual dance parties, and video trips to different locations. This week we are having a drive-by retirement celebration for a long time Hammer staff member.

GRATEFUL FOR YOUR KINDNESS by Ellen Timmerman, Chief Development Officer

I

n a recent Facebook post, I was asked, “What’s your favorite word?” My thoughts bounced back and forth between kindness and gratitude; two feelings that I have experienced in these past months because of you. As we have managed and sometimes struggled through different days, you have given so much with countless acts of kindness to Hammer. We can stay the course because of your generosity. Those we

serve are safe and healthy because you give what you can and sometimes more. I marvel at the competence and compassion of everyone who keeps showing up. In my thirty-eight years at Hammer, I have had the privilege to know many of you and so for me, this is personal. Please take a moment and feel our gratitude because you have made people’s lives better. You have made financial commitments because you believe in people living full lives at Hammer. For your abundant kindness and generosity, I am truly grateful.

Ellen with Kelly in 2016. They have known each other since August 1982, when Ellen started working at Hammer back when it was a campus.

Individuals supported by Hammer are safe and healthy because of your generous donations. Thank you for your support.

STAFF ARE THE TRUE HEROES AT HAMMER By Sue Walker, Chief Program Officer

A

s I write to you in late August 2020, we have gone seven weeks without a cases of COVID-19 amongst individuals and employees. It was a small victory and blessing to go without any cases for a short time, and we remain vigilant in our efforts to keep the individuals and employees safe. It seems to confirm that all of our efforts to keep people safe at the sites and in the community, sanitize well, and refocus our work across Hammer is really worth it. Everyone has had to change how they interact, go about their daily routine, and prioritize what needs to get done.

Sue Walker with her friend, James, supported by Hammer, whom she has been friends with for over 40 years.

It is humbling to reflect on and witness how the direct care staff put themselves on the frontline every day. Without their dedication to the individuals and to Hammer, we would not be able to do what is our mission–supporting people to live life to the fullest. How that looks has so drastically changed over the past five months. It takes everyone involved at Hammer to make it all work! A big thank you goes out to each department at Hammer. Priorities and job tasks have been totally focused on how we can support the individuals and frontline employees. Everyone has stepped up including; Health Services, Finance, Human Resources, Training, Communications, IT, Maintenance, Development, Reception, Custom Support Services (CSS), Volunteers, and also the Board of Directors. Once again, it confirms that Hammer is a special place. While we are among many organizations that provide services for people with disabilities, our current situation really highlights how we exemplify our values of empowerment, quality, service, joy, learning, pride, and stewardship every day. 4 | Hammer Discoveries

Employees show up every day and give generously with their commitment to the individuals they support. Additionally, employees also make financial contributions. Thank you for your contributions from October 1, 2019 through July 15, 2020

INCLUDING EVERYONE IN THE CONVERSATION IMPROVES QUALITY OF LIFE By Jenna Neal, Hammer Nurse

I

t’s an honor and a privilege to be a nurse at Hammer Residences to care and advocate for the individuals we support. I am sincerely grateful to have the opportunity to help them lead healthy and happy lives through this

As a nursing team we formed guidelines to address the health and safety of the individuals we support very early on, which has helped us stay ahead of things. Extra monitoring and precautions are taken seriously, to properly protect and keep individuals safe. Our lives have been forever changed, but more so for the individuals served by Hammer. They may not be able to fully understand the severity of the situation or be able to articulate their emotions.

Jenna sporting her new mask.

Some individuals are scared and upset with the change of routine. They have not been able to go to work, see their friends or family, or be able to celebrate special occasions like birthdays the way they are used to. Staff members are adjusting daily to help ease their anxiety. Staff members always listen

carefully to the individuals and watch for physical signs to make sure individuals are getting what they need to also stay emotionally healthy. As life is starting to return to normal for some, there are many individuals that are still at a high risk and are not going out in the community. We are doing everything in our power to keep them safe and healthy through all of the transitions. My colleagues at Hammer are truly amazing. Everyone is doing all the right things, to keep the needs of the individuals we support at the forefront of our work, and is the heart of our mission. This is why I do this work, and know that I am in the right place working at Hammer Residences.

uncertain time and into the future. I knew from a young age I wanted to help people and pursued a career in nursing. The reason I do this work is because I am passionate about improving the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities. My goal is to help improve the quality of life for an individual by including them in the conversation. It’s very important to me to get to know the individual as a person and to build a relationship so we can better understand what to do medically that will improve each person’s health. Individuals with developmental disabilities are four times more likely to contract COVID-19. So many of our individuals have underlying health conditions that may complicate their health during the pandemic.

A TOP 150 WORKPLACE FOR THE 12TH YEAR IN A ROW By Kim Hansen, Director of Human Resources Hammer is proud to be named a Star Tribune Top 150 Workplace for 12 years in a row. This is extra special because the award is based on the results of a survey taken by Hammer employees. Questions are asked about culture and the direction of Hammer. We have a longstanding reputation of employees working here for many years (25 percent of employees working here for 10 or more years.). In my forty-two years with Hammer, I have been a part of many changes and those changes resulted in continued success and quality. Our staff members are truly Hammer Heroes in the great work they do each and every day. The COVID-19 pandemic has created many new challenges, yet employees continue to be flexible, dedicated, and continue to do their best work to provide the high-quality services that Hammer Residences is known for within the community.

IT’S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS By Ken Harper, Director

M

were supported there, and through the years saw so much growth in the guys. It’s been very rewarding.

Like all best laid plans, as I started doing the work, I found it was a natural fit for me and I continued to stay and work at Hammer. I knew early on that I had found my place and Hammer was the spot for me. I never really planned on staying for 29 years, but it’s been great. I especially like the culture.

There did come a point Ken being interviewed on Zoom, and where the guys had sharing his story of why he loves working at Hammer. grown and matured and that they did not need as much support. I credit their progress to three main things: consistency, honesty, and trust. This has been a great accomplishment over the years, seeing the guys not need as much support, watching the behaviors subside, and things fall into place for them. Life was good.

y journey to Hammer started over 29 years ago, when I moved to Minnesota from Louisiana with the plan of getting a job at Hazelden. My background is in chemical dependency treatment, and I thought I would continue on that path in Minnesota. When I first got to Minnesota, I took a job as a DSP at Hammer “temporarily” working at one of our group homes, then named Dublin (which today is Hammer’s Ridgeview home).

Ken and former Board Member, George Daum, at Hammer’s Spring Breakfast in 2019.

Ken and Kris, supported by Hammer at Hammer’s Hampshire home, at Hammer’s Family Day Picnic in 2019. Ken was manager at Hampshire home before becoming a Director. The men have known each other for 5 years.

The reason I do this work is I enjoy the challenge of figuring out what is behind the behaviors of individuals and figuring out why they are reacting in a certain way. It usually is a communication issue, so I try to find a solution that works for everyone. It is gratifying to see each individual's progress and to see them gain confidence with their success. As time went on, solid relationships began to build between the individuals, their families, and me. Because I was really invested in their progress and truly cared about them the relationships flourished as time went on. Fast forward and the next opportunity opened at a new Hammer transitional home, that today is called Hampshire. This is where I spent the bulk of my years as a program manager. I truly enjoyed working with the individuals and families who 8 | Hammer Discoveries

Then in 2016, a director position opened up at Hammer and one of my colleagues thought I would be great. She strongly encouraged me to apply. I had to do a great deal of soul searching, because it was really hard to leave the guys at Hampshire. The biggest thing that kept me from applying was leaving the guys at Hampshire, because my heart was in supporting them. I was going back and forth on whether to apply or not. Then, my wife gave me some insight that helped me decide. She said, “Ken, you would not even be considering applying for the director job if you didn’t think the guys were ready. You are just having a hard time letting go of them. The guys will be fine.” She knows me really well and that I would never leave a job half done. Her piece of advice made me realize that the guys would be fine if I did move on, so I applied, was offered the position, and accepted. It has been very rewarding. Throughout my years at Hammer, I have gotten to know and worked with many wonderful families and individuals, so it would be hard to mention just one. My greatest accomplishment is making sure each person feels validated and important because for me, it will always be about the relationships.

WHEN TALENT AND LIFE MERGE By Joe Cullen, Communication Specialist

A

fter working for over 20 years as a reporter and producer in the cable television industry, I was looking for a career change. I knew that I wanted to stay in communications creating media. I also was especially keen on finding a job at a nonprofit where I could use my skills to help promote an organization that I was passionate about. I couldn’t have asked for a better fit than Hammer Residences! I was immediately drawn to their mission because I’m the father of a 14-year-old son with autism.

inspire and motivate our staff through a series of videos we call “Friday Favorites.” Every Friday I help create and edit a video that shows what our staff and supported individuals have been up to. We’ve done everything from show off staff pets to showing off everyone’s parents for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. I am thrilled to be working at Hammer and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Being the father of a son with special needs gives me unique insight into how the families of the individuals we support feel. Anytime I’m writing or creating a video, I always try to think about how I feel as a parent. I want the world to know my son as a person and value his accomplishments. It’s been a unique nine months so far during my time at Hammer for sure! Just as I felt I was hitting my stride after about four months, COVID-19 entered everyone’s lives and I’ve been working primarily from home ever since. Part of my job is filming “virtual tours” so that families can see what the homes look like when there are openings. I've been thankful for these filming opportunities, because it gives me a chance to see the homes, meet the staff, and individuals. I look forward to the day when we all can get back to our regular routines, but it has been rewarding to try to help

BELIEVING IN DREAMS AND DIGNITY THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES By Julie Jurrjens, Volunteer at Hammer

B

ecause I was new to Minnesota and didn’t know many people, I started volunteering at Hammer to meet people. I had a wonderful Cornish Rex cat, Rory, who I thought would be great as a therapy animal, so I looked

staying six feet apart, or chatting on Zoom or Facetime. Lisa turned these strange circumstances into a number of pieces of great writing that articulated things we are all feeling right now. She wrote about frustrations with face masks, the joy of breathing fresh air, processing the bad news about COVID-19, and how much fun it is to play board games. She wrote and I typed as she dictated. It’s great to be present when people articulate their feelings so meaningfully.

Julie and Fresca.

In memory of Rory.

I also have a long relationship with Janet, too, and now I have a cat because of her. For many years, Janet was Fresca the cat’s pet parent, but he developed a medical condition that was challenging for her to manage. Janet asked me if I could care for him since I’ve known Fresca since he was a kitten. Of course, I said yes. Fresca lives with my husband and me, and Janet continues her relationship with her special friend. A pre-COVID picture of Janet and Fresca.

I treasure the relationships I have with the individuals at Hammer. I believe in their dreams, their dignity, and know that Hammer supports both. That is why I support Hammer.

into volunteer opportunities involving pets. I was offered an opportunity to visit Hammer's Jersey with Rory, and got to know the guys there through those visits. It’s now been more than a decade and I still look forward to every visit to Jersey. From time spent at Hammer events, I got to know more of the individuals Hammer serves, and started volunteering. I do activities with different individuals; assist Lisa with her writing, do crafts with Janet, and just hang out with the guys at Jersey. I enjoy all of the activities because individuals supported by Hammer are inspiring, fun people. Because of COVID-19, volunteering now means sitting outside, wearing masks, 10 | Hammer Discoveries

CARRYING ON MY FATHER’S LEGACY OF GIVING BACK By Vikki Steward, Volunteer at Hammer When my father passed, I wanted to do something that would carry on his legacy of giving back. Dad loved to help people, so I decided to become a volunteer at Hammer in honor of his memory. I volunteer at Hammer because it is such a strong organization, serving individuals who need some extra support. The individuals are something special, and I have found they are so appreciative for even small offers to help. One of my favorite volunteer activities is cooking with a lovely lady named Linda. She wanted to learn how to cook meals for herself. We started cooking together once a month at her apartment. Now with the COVID environment, we have had to get creative and cook over the phone once a week. We just put each other on speaker and away we go.

Linda with cupcakes she made for Valentine’s Day.

Together, Linda and I have made cupcakes, cookies, hotdishes, and crock pot meals. I am amazed at how her cooking skills have grown. She loves cooking in her crock pot and has gotten really good at making many of her own meals. She is such a delight. We have become more than cooking partners, we are good friends. Sometimes during the week, she will call me with a quick cooking question or just to fill me in on everything going on in her life. I am so humbled and blessed to call her my friend. Before the pandemic, I enjoyed other in-person volunteer opportunities from helping at the flu clinic, craft fair, or serving food at the Family Day Picnic. I have also volunteered at Hammer’s Reach for Ralph fundraising event and went on group travel trips. I enjoy all the individuals I have met. They are unique and delightful in so many Tater tot hotdish is a favorite dish Linda makes for an evening supper. ways. When I come home I feel humbled and thankful for all the good in my life. I believe I am the best version of myself when I give back to others. Everyone at Hammer is so appreciative of my volunteer service. They truly make me feel appreciated and valued as a person… and that makes for a perfect volunteer experience.

STAYING IN THE MOMENT ON LIFE’S DAILY JOURNEY By Judi Marie and Mitch Ringe

O

ur son, Chris, moved into Hammer three years ago this coming October. Prior to his moving in, we had known about Hammer for thirtyplus years, from when we first moved to Minnesota. I (Judy) had a long career in special education, even before Chris was born. We’ve always viewed Hammer as an exciting agency serving individuals living with developmental disabilities, even more so when Chris came along. Like a lot of parents, we were thinking What happens when he grows up? What opportunities might be available outside of his home? When the sad eventuality of our passing comes, what then? Mitch and I exploded with joy when Hammer became an opportunity for Chris, and we jumped at the opportunity. It has been a miracle and a great fit for Chris and for his hopes and dreams. Hammer has been great at working with Chris, giving him a range of options that work well for him.

You cannot overwhelm him with open ended questions. He has learned a whole new language at Hammer, talking about his choices. The staff at Lancaster are fabulous. Each person is so important to his success, so it’s impossible to say any one individual has made an impression on us, because it’s a team approach. We can consistently look to the staff to step in and do what Chris needs at that moment. They all bring their own observations and strategies that are helpful to Chris. With all that’s going on in Chris’s life right now, all these changes, and he is still successful and feeling good, is a credit to Hammer’s staff. One of our favorite things to do for Hammer is to give back, in many ways. We try to support the team at Lancaster the best we can. We have brought meals to the house, given them money to go get pizza, and brought over some planting materials so the guys could plant tomatoes and flowers. Whatever comes along that we think they will enjoy, we try and figure out something. And of course, we are financial donors to Hammer. Mitch and I think it’s very important to support the organization that supports us.

THRIVING AND LOVING HIS INDEPENDENT LIFE AT HAMMER By Peg Peck and Gary Krainak, Family of Sam, supported at Hammer’s Vicksburg Village

F

rom the first time they met, our son Sam hit it off immediately with Brian Kelly, Hammer’s program director, over their shared love of baseball.

On move-in day, Sam was a little nervous, but also excited to live in his apartment and start a new chapter in his life. The staff at Vicksburg Village were amazing. Everyone at Hammer was so reassuring and supportive; and to this day they continue to delight us. Sam is truly thrilled with his new-found independence and just loves his job working at Ameriprise.

Recently, we sold our home of many years and took a longplanned trip, before COVID. It was reassuring that we could get away and be comfortable about it, now that Sam was living in his own apartment, supported by Hammer. We are so excited for him that he is happy and loves his new life.

Gary and I now consider ourselves part of the Hammer family and would do anything to help. If helping Hammer helps Sam, then that’s what we’ll do! I joined the Reach for Ralph planning committee which turned out to be Hammer’s first virtual event. My husband, Gary, and I both jumped in, invited friends to join us and we all supported Hammer together. Sam has gained such a sense of pride for living independently and it’s all due to the staff. He is part of the Hammer community and he is totally embracing his new life. Thank you Hammer for making this all possible.

Our friends also love Sam and they are very happy he has found his independent home at Hammer. Many have even stopped by to visit him at his new place, and Sam is excited to show people around his apartment. My husband Gary also brings baked treats to Sam and his friends at Vicksburg Village. Everyone at Hammer is very open and welcoming. From John the CEO, to the program directors and the caregivers in the homes. Abby, Stephanie, and all the staff are remarkable people. Sam has told us about how they come in to help him if needed and take him out to get something Sam loves to spend time with his sisters Anne and Grace.

EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE TO OTHERS IS OUR CORE VALUE By Dan Esch, president of Esch Construction Supply

J

ack Tuckner, a friend and co-worker, introduced me to Hammer. His sister, Janet, has an intellectual disability and has lived at Hammer since the early 1980s. She is truly wonderful. Years ago, when I first met Janet, I was struck by the independence and quality of life she enjoyed daily. Janet has the solid support and respect of the Hammer staff members, who also do amazing work with many individuals. Talking with Janet always lifts my spirits. In 2015, my wife, Elizabeth and I were invited by Janet’s family (Thank you Tuckner family!) to a Reach for Ralph event. We found such inspiration in the stories of those supported by Hammer. We were so moved and had so much fun that we brought our children the following year. When you visit a Hammer home or attend a Hammer event, you see the work that is done to create opportunities for the people they serve. You come away feeling better about life and about our world.

The Esch family at Reach for Ralph in 2016.

I am the president of Esch Construction Supply, and my business has been a sponsor of Reach for Ralph for many years, including the most recent virtual event, Reach for Ralph — At Home Edition. We support Hammer today because of Janet and the many people like her who are living independent lives to the fullest. Our ESO (Exceptional Service to Others) Team at Esch Construction Supply has also volunteered at Reach for Ralph events, helping with the event set up and more, and will continue to support Hammer because of their exceptional service to others.

Oh, and don’t forget the doughnuts! Our good friends have kindly added to our waistlines during COVID-19. We love it! And so, did our caregivers when CEO John Estrem, and Director of Human Resources, Kim Hansen made special deliveries. Thank you to Wuollet Bakery, too! Many thanks to all of our community partners and especially Bailee from Grizzly’s Wood-Fired Grill in Plymouth for the generous donation of 720 bottles of hand sanitizer. Every Hammer home has enough to stay safe!

Yes, we do have matching masks. Look closely, they are foxy! L to R: Meghan and Stephanie.

STRIKE! Well, almost. We miss our friends at Texa-Tonka Lanes but we are sharpening our bowling skills at home so we are ready when our league starts again.

Make a Gift Directly from your IRA to Hammer. If you are 70½ or older, you can give a gift directly from your IRA to support Hammer Residences. While you will not receive an income-tax deduction, you will not pay taxes on any distributions made directly to Hammer. A gift from your IRA also reduces your taxable income, which could help reduce your Medicare premiums and the amount of Social Security benefits that are taxable. Contact your IRA plan administrator to request that a qualified charitable distribution be made directly to Hammer Residences today.

* = Legacy gift received + = Deceased Red = New to Society

Leave a legacy, so your cherished values live on. If you already have a will, a quick phone call to your attorney is all you will need to add a charitable gift to Hammer. You can also designate Hammer as a beneficiary of your retirement fund (IRA, 401(k), 403(b)) and life insurance plan. Now is a great time to start planning and to consider supporting the future of individuals living at Hammer. Contact Angela Bernhardt or Ellen Timmerman-Borer at 952-473-1261 for more information.

FRIENDS AND HOUSEMATES FOR 19 YEARS!

Left to right: Carla, Carolyn, Stephanie, and Cindy have lived as housemates for 19 years in Plymouth. They celebrated by having food delivered from Famous Dave’s BBQ, (one of their favorites) and ate on their back deck with staff. They enjoyed reminiscing and laughing about fun times together, even during the quarantine.
