OUR CULTURE OF CARING By John Estrem, CEO of Hammer
I
t is pretty easy to brag about the staff at Hammer. Almost every day I am privileged to see the kindness, dedication and care of our Hammer staff. Sometimes it is a direct support professional simply being there for someone we support as they navigate the world. Other times it is a receptionist being kind or a maintenance person stopping the work they are doing at a house to say “hi” to someone we support. Hammer has over 500 dedicated staff members who give of themselves every day to enrich the lives of people living with a disability. In addition to helping the people we support to live life to its fullest, Hammer tries to be a good neighbor and care for the wider world. We work hard to care for our homes and to build relationships in the neighborhoods that we live in.
Pam Janczewski, Program Director, (second from left) 2016 ARC Award Winner for Inclusive Housing.
We also work hard on wider issues that impact the community. Recently a couple of our staff members were recognized for their community contributions. Recently, Pam Janczewski, Program Director, received the ARC Minnesota Inclusive Housing Award. Pam has worked for years helping people access housing that helps them be more independent and involved within the community. In many cases it was Pam’s skill and dedication that made all the difference to someone seeking housing outside a traditional group home. Ellen Timmerman-Borer, Chief Development Officer, was given the Wayzata Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year award for 2016. This award recognizes Ellen’s deep commitment to the Wayzata community, which has been home to Hammer for over 80 years. Hammer has been privileged to be part of a community that has always welcomed us with open arms. Ellen has helped us make that a two-way street and put into action our deep desire to be good neighbors and to contribute to the greater world around us. At Hammer, we love our work. We do this work in the context of the communities where we live. Giving back is part of who we are. We have received so much and are thrilled when we have a chance to also give back. With gratitude,

BETH'S STORY: NURTURING AN INDEPENDENT SPIRIT By Al Tennessen, Hammer Board of Directors
W
hen my younger sister, Beth, was born in 1950, she had both medical and developmental disabilities. Our mom had diabetes, and back then the full impact of the disease on a pregnancy was unknown. The prognosis for Beth wasn’t good when she was little, but she was a fighter and survived. After our mother’s early death at the age of 49, Beth moved into a group home, but she always wanted more independence. She spent seven years at the home, and with the support and care of many, worked on developing the skills she would need to live on her own. The day finally came when Beth was able to live in and maintain her very own one-bedroom apartment in North Minneapolis and later in Wayzata. For more than thirty years she lived independently. She worked at a cafeteria and loved to grocery shop and cook her own meals. She developed her own identity and interests, thriving with just a little support and guidance a few hours a week. A few years ago, Beth’s medical disabilities began to limit her safety. That’s when Hammer became her caring support system. Beth is now 66 and retired. She still lives in her own apartment, but at a Hammer apartment program in Plymouth with staff in the building available for her as needed. She enjoys eating meals with others in the community apartment, traveling to Branson, Missouri with Hammer Travel and is an eternal optimist rooting for the Minnesota Twins. Beth is among the more than 1,500 people in our communities, with unique needs, that the Hammer staff lead by their hearts, and share their talents with to help them live life to its fullest. This level of support is only possible because

of the financial support of countless generous donors. Hammer believes everyone deserves to experience life to its fullest. The Hammer story is symbolized by the “Ralph” statues and embodies the spirit of Hammer, and a community of people who respect the individual’s abilities, whose collective spirit makes dreams come true and whose innovations continue to lead the way for people with disabilities. They’ve been working at perfecting their mission for more than 90 years.
“Mom said we needed to find people who could love and care for Beth as a mother would. We have found that love for Beth at Hammer.” — Al Tennessen

When Andy Met Molly — A
Dream Come True
By Aaron Garcia, Program Manager, Hammer Lake Place Apartments
L
ove is patient, love is kind. I have experienced this first hand between Andy and Molly over the past six years, first, when I was a DSP and now as program manager at Hammer’s Lake Place apartments. I have watched as the couple have grown in independence, maturity and love. As a couple they manage to push through and resolve conflicts that arise, which is really key in any relationship. I truly admire the patience, love and kindness they show one another . . . no matter what.
“
I feel that I can speak for the Lake Place team when I say, "We truly enjoy spending time with this lovely couple; watching them grow in love, and filling our lives with joy and laughter. Congratulations Andy and Molly!”
Andy and Molly first met back in 1981 when they were young kids at summer camp. The camp was discontinued after a few summers and they lost contact with each other. Fast forward to 2008 when Andy and Molly were reunited at Hammer’s Broadmoor Apartments. The story goes like this: Andy had just moved into his apartment and was walking down to be with his new friends in the community apartment. Molly was meeting friends to go out to dinner when she opened the door to leave, and there was Andy. Their eyes met and they recognized each other right away. Andy remembered her as “the girl with the pretty curls from camp.” Molly remembered him as “the cute little white haired boy.” A friendship immediately sparked, and the rest is history. Just like all couples, sometimes communication can be a barrier, but it does not prevent them from working through their issues in a loving way. When a difficulty occurs and they have trouble communicating, a Hammer staff member or their guardians help them to effectively communicate their message to the other. The collaboration between guardians and the Hammer staff help to guide the couple to further develop and grow in their relationship. However, in the grand scheme of things, we have merely fostered love.
— Aaron Garcia Sometimes Andy and Molly find themselves in the alltoo-familiar couples dispute of where to eat on date night. The argument goes back and forth between the two, until Molly states, "Andy, shut up and kiss me." Andy will often freeze after hearing this, then proceed to kiss Molly. After the kiss they smile at each other, then agree on where to eat. I find this quarrel very relatable to quarrels in my marriage; it is also one of the recurring petty squabbles between my wife and me. Love is patient, love is kind.

Molly and Andy's engagement day in 2010.
The Proposal
Andy proposed to Molly on Christmas Eve 2010, and Molly gracefully accepted. They were married on August 13, 2016 at the Braemer Golf Course in Edina where they first met at camp as children. On their wedding day the sky was blue and the sun was bright and shining. Molly wore a beautiful dress with a sparking silver tiara and white flowing veil. Her radiant smile lit up the room and warmed the hearts of everyone around her, especially Andy’s. Andy stood in high-esteem, dressed in his black tux and smiling from ear to ear as he walked down the aisle to marry his best friend, Molly. He was the groom, she was the bride and it was their wedding day; and their day it was! Andy and Molly were lovingly surrounded by over one hundred of their closest friends and family members who were thrilled to be part of this joyous day. Their wedding was a dream come true. Speeches were made, toasts were given, and two loving families merged. Many people helped to make Andy and Molly’s wedding their special day. The Lake Place DSP's supported the couple by arranging transportation to biweekly pre-marriage counseling sessions and weekly date nights. Emily Miller, Hammer DSP, took on the role of wedding planner for the couple, making sure their wedding day was planned and organized exactly as they imagined. The day made a lasting impression on many people. Molly's and Andy's dreams and hopes are no different than other young couples who meet, fall in love and get married. Love knows no boundaries. The life you lead; is the life you love. Below: Molly and Andy when they were younger.

NEW PROGRAMS OFFER UNIQUE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES By Cathy Thoma, Volunteer Resource Manager
T
he Volunteer department is always looking for ways to support those we serve and their caregivers. In response to the current workforce shortage, we have developed, and are implementing, two new volunteer programs. Both of these programs will offer respite to staff, in addition to allowing them time to work more closely with our individuals on a one-on-one basis. The first program is Meals in the Homes, which is geared toward those who enjoy cooking. We are inviting individuals, families, friends and organizations to help prepare dinner at one of our residences. The recipe will be provided. Volunteers can schedule to cook once a month or more frequently if desired. The volunteers then get to stay and enjoy the meal with our folks. We plan on piloting this program in our Unity and 14th Avenue homes, then expand to the rest of Hammer. The second program is Adopt A Home. This is a unique opportunity for groups or organizations to be matched to one of our homes. The volunteers can host pizza and a movie night, game night, arts and crafts or a variety of other activities. This allows volunteers to build rapport and spend quality time with those we serve. The visiting members of the group or organization can be the same people each visit, or rotate, based on personal schedules. This is a great way to get to know Hammer and can be done once a month or more frequent basis.

THE COOKIE MAN SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER! By Brian C. Kelly, Individualized Community Services Manager
Jim is at home in his kitchen with his trusty Kitchen Aid mixer, getting ready to bake cookies for the holiday deliveries.

W
hat’s the most important part of the holiday season to you? For Jim, it’s spreading holiday cheer with his famous homemade cookies! It all started about 40 years ago when Jim used his grandma’s spritz recipe and the cookies turned out great. The following year Jim wanted to share the cookies with his family and friends, and that’s when he started being known as the Cookie Man! Over the years, Jim’s client list has grown to over 60 people that he bakes, packages and delivers cookies to around his community. The lucky recipients of the cookies don’t see the labor intensive process that not only goes into making them, but packaging them as well. Jim collects coffee tins throughout the year and decorates them to use as packaging. The last step is a trip to Bachman’s where he purchases mini holiday ornaments that he tapes to the top of the coffee tins right next to the personalized name tag. The cookies taste delicious, but the love that goes into the packaging is a reflection on how much Jim enjoys putting a smile on other’s faces.
In August 2013, Jim started receiving services from Hammer’s In-Home program to assist with day-to-day tasks around the house and in the community. Jim continued living independently in his family home in Richfield after his parents passed away. He took a lot of pride in keeping the house in great shape. As the years passed, Jim made the choice to move into a senior living complex in Eden Prairie. A major concern was how he was going to continue his cookie delivery service when he lived in a new community. Jim did not let living in a new community stand in his way. His network has only expanded and he is spreading holiday cheer more than ever. He was clear that he did not need or want any help with the baking process, because his grandma’s recipe is top secret and he prefers to cook independently. The delivery process is where his Hammer staff has provided some assistance. Donna is getting ready to spend her third holiday season as Jim’s staff and she is very excited to take part in the delivery process again. Hammer Discoveries | 7

HEART OF A DSP By Thomas Gillespie, Chief Program Officer
A
t Hammer, we believe that our mission lives in the interactions between our DSPs and the individuals we support. As I reflect back on the last year, I am amazed by the experiences and transitions that we have seen as an organization. We have seen some incredibly positive developments in the way that we provide service, we have celebrated the marriage of two individuals we support, we moved one of our apartment programs to an environment that is far more engaging and we opened Lisbeth Place, our new children’s home. Of course, we have also dealt with our fair share of adversity as we adapted to large scale changes in funding and licensing regulations,

worked through the onset of a staffing shortage and said goodbye to a number of beloved staff and friends we have known and served for years. However, it is not these experiences and the ups and downs they bring that amazes me. I am amazed by the work that is done each day by our direct support professionals in the context of these events. Often our communications, pictures and stories recognize milestone events, once-in-a-lifetime vacations and significant achievements, all for very good reasons. These are banner moments for the folks we support and they should absolutely be celebrated. However, I think we do ourselves a disservice at times by not taking a moment to recognize the smaller

interactions that, over time, have a larger impact on the lives of the folks we support. Without exception, our direct support professionals have been a part of every great story we tell. They have been there celebrating marriages, traveling together on milestone vacations, supporting individuals through childbirth and holding hands at funerals. But even more importantly, they have been there to help shape the visions and dreams that inspired these joys and they have developed the relationships that make saying good-bye so hard. Currently, Hammer has 371 direct support professionals supporting nearly 340 individuals living in apartments, group homes or in their family home. As with any group that size, our group of DSPs is incredibly diverse. They range in age from their late teens to their mid-eighties. We have DSPs who are also teachers, published authors, doctorate students, nurses and a large number of staff whose work at Hammer serves as their primary career. While the group is remarkably diverse, they have at least one thing in common without exception: Their hard work and devotion enriches lives and creates opportunities for the men and women we serve to live life to its fullest. For each of these milestone events, there have certainly been thousands of smaller moments where each individual and their team of DSPs tackled the ordinary events of the day. Getting up in the morning, making a quick dinner before bowling, sitting in traffic on the way to the doctor and brushing teeth before bed are not great cover stories but truly that is where our mission lives. It is that work, and the people that do it that will continue to amaze me each day. I truly hope that you find the opportunity to witness these connections first hand, and take a moment to recognize the tremendous efforts of our direct support professionals. It is their work and resulting growth that makes me so incredibly proud to be a part of the Hammer family.
DSP CORNER Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the foundation of our organization and should be recognized for the amazing support they provide. These sometimes unsung heroes embody Hammer’s mission to provide those with developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience life to its fullest.

THE REAL SUPERHERO IS YOU By Ellen Timmerman-Borer, Chief Development Officer
Y
our gifts supported Todd, our “Super Hero.” During his 41 years at Hammer, Todd loved the care givers who supported him. Many moved on, as people do, to different jobs. However, Todd just loved those who supported him. He had an incredibly warm smile and was quick to connect with the people he met. He willingly opened up to people who cared for him. After you met Todd, you were instant friends. Everyone loved him: That was Todd’s “super power.” One of the care givers who consistently supported Todd was Katie Bell. She supported Todd for more than nine years, working nights and weekends at Hammer’s McGlinch home. Todd was very active in his younger years. He did not need as much support until he aged. Katie was trained to dress, bathe, lift, transfer and do whatever was needed so that Todd was supported. As he aged, the home was set up for the care that he needed, but a house is not a home without people. People like Katie. Katie’s desire to serve Todd in the best way possible, led her to continue her education. She received Hammer’s education grants, funded by donors, for over five years. Katie completed her undergraduate degree in Human Services with an emphasis on Disability Studies and a minor in Gerontology. Katie improved herself and stayed with Todd to serve him better, to improve his life. Todd Solseth lived a good life. He passed away on August 10, 2016. He was surrounded by family and friends in his final days. His warm smile and super power of loving others is greatly missed. For Todd and many more supported by you, Katie’s education and dedication to people served at Hammer are essential. You can help us care for people in every way possible, the way Katie cared for Todd. We need your financial support so that everyone served at Hammer will be cared for with wisdom and love.
Todd loved super heroes, and he made a loving impression on all who knew him.

After a number of years, I was asked to be a part of the community board at Hammer and I began to hear all the dreams that were incubating for the organization and the people that Hammer serves.
Everyone in the Hammer family was encouraged to “Reach for the Stars.” One of our reaches was for an education fund that the Hammer staff could access to help with the cost of education. Our belief in Hammer’s mission and the critical need for caring and trained employees led us to create an Education Fund. That fund continues to be a win-win for all of Hammer today.” — Nancy and John Berg
Katie and Todd just hanging out.
Katie’s Story “My time spent with Todd and the men at McGlinch sparked my interest in specifically caring for individuals aging with developmental disabilities. It seemed that this was a group of people who had been overlooked and underserved as more attention was focused on mainstream baby boomers and how they spend their “golden years.” I wanted to learn as much as I could to keep up with the swift changes in the field of human services to make me the best advocate that I could be. Receiving education grants from Hammer donors enabled me to do that. Not only did it take some of the burden off the high cost of tuition while earning a direct support professional wage, it showed that Hammer believed in me and what I could confidently bring to the organization. I felt appreciated and supported. I took a genuine and serious interest in growing with the people we support and adapting my approach to their changing needs rather than hoping that they will age in a way that fits an already determined mold. Coming to work every day with that approach guaranteed that even as Todd declined and his needs increased, our relationship would continue to evolve and grow. Families often thank us for the care we give to their loved ones. While that is great to hear, I continue to search for a way to explain that in many cases, the people we support often do more for us than we do for them. The men at McGlinch have proved that to me many times over. My nine years with Todd taught me many lessons. Todd schooled me daily in lessons of patience, empathy and tough love. He taught me how to choose my battles. The biggest thing I learned from Todd was not to take life so seriously.”
As Todd aged, the McGlinch home and his staff adapted to the changes that were needed for Todd to live a full life.

FRIENDSHIP KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES By Ann Martinka, Hammer Travel Business Development Associate Neal and Allen in New York City.
Allen and Neal taking a break on a Wisconsin Dude Ranch.
“Hammer Travel opened up a brand new horizon for these boys . . . they could meet up and travel independently.” — Sandy (Neal’s mom)
F
riendship: It doesn’t care if you have a disability, or if you live thousands of miles apart – friendship just is!
Allen and Neal are best friends. Neal lives at Lake Place in Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Allen lives in South Carolina. They have been best friends since pre-school age. Both families lived in South Carolina until the boys were around eight years old and then Neal and his family moved to Eden Prairie. In most scenarios, children will move on and find new friendships. But not Allen and Neal — they have stayed steadfast and solid throughout the years. They love, understand and accept each other for who they are — their gifts as well as their limitations. During Hurricane Matthew, Neal was worried about Allen and called several times. Judy (Allen’s mom) said they had tried to call Neal back, knowing how worried he is about his friend. This is the type of friendship they have – caring, loving and fun. Years ago, Judy and Sandy (the moms) would get them together on a yearly basis to allow them to reconnect and hang out. Judy said when the boys would first see each other, the first 30 minutes were just giggles. The moms would just sit back, listening and marveling at the gift of friendship. While getting together yearly was important, sometimes life got in the way and it wasn't possible.
12 | Hammer Discoveries
Then the families discovered Hammer Travel. “What a Godsend — Hammer Travel opened up a brand new horizon for these boys,” said Sandy. “They no longer had to rely on their parents or their schedules. They could meet up independently.” Allen and Neal each look at the brochure and pick out a trip they like. They discuss it, and then make their decision. So far, Allen and Neal have traveled to New York City, Nashville/ Memphis and a Wisconsin Dude Ranch. After each trip, they begin planning their next one — just like friends do after a fun vacation. This year, Allen was able to stay for a few days with Neal after their Wisconsin Dude Ranch trip. As a bonus, Allen was able to attend the Hammer Family Picnic. Because he has stayed with Neal at other times, the staff knew and recognized him. He was welcomed as a long lost friend, which made him happy! True friendship is a gift. Now, where to go next?

ADVOCACY
BE LOUD AND BE HEARD. LET’S TURN UP THE HEAT! By Terriann Thommes, Director of Advocacy and Volunteer Resources
Barb telling MN Senator Ron Lantz, District 46, about her request for Medical Assistance Reform.
Imagine the following scenario: Year after year a group of grassroots advocates works hard to make change but nothing happens. You ask a series of questions: Did they have town hall and candidate forums? “Yes.” Meet, write and call their legislators? “Yes.” Which legislators? “The ones that love us (we know who they are). They come and visit us every year!” Who are the people that show up at these events and how many are there? “There are a handful of dedicated parents and staff as well as self-advocates… they work hard and know the issues well. They represent us well.” Hmmm. You scratch your head and think: “Only a handful.” For grassroots advocacy, a handful simply will not work. You need NUMBERS and NOISE! Why? Because the grassroots advocates are the tinder that stokes the fires to create the heat that legislators feel to change policy. Legislators and policy makers need to feel the heat. WE MUST CREATE HEAT! The only way to do that is to be noisy, visible and persistent. We might also consider a few new tactics such as approaching new legislators …. even the ones who do not know us or who have not traditionally supported us. Question: “What does a cowboy or girl do when they find themselves in a hole? They quit digging.” If our approach is not working, we should try approaching the issue or problem from a different angle.
Lafayette Dolo (left) and Michael (right) are getting ready to talk to Rep. Sarah Anderson, District 44A, about his request for better transportation.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Bring a friend or two or three to the next advocacy event.
• Attend an advocacy event you have never attended before.
• Reach out to a legislator who has not supported disability rights and try to educate them on one issue.
• Write your story to share about your son or daughter or your family.
• Bring a friend or two to the Capitol when Hammer goes March 14 and May 2.
• Meet with your legislator and urge them to do something!
• Stay informed. In the midst of a staffing crisis, unfunded mandates, transportation problems, sorely needed Medicaid reform and so much more, we must take action.
Be Loud and Be Heard. Now more than ever we need to turn up the heat! TO KNOW MORE >> For advocacy news and action alerts please contact Lisa Parish-Greenberg at lpgreenberg@hammer.org

MEET THE TEAM BEHIND THE SCENE AT HAMMER'S HAMPSHIRE HOME By Kim Hansen, Director of Human Resources
I’m Going Wherever Ken Goes When Ken Harper came to Hammer 25 years ago he, like many other long term staff, thought he was just going to stay for a few years. He did not realize that he was a born leader with a natural person-centered approach. That is just who he is. The first time you meet Ken, his kindness, calm demeanor and warm smile will pull you in. Ken started working at Hammer in a newly opened home that was serving young men with many challenges. Ken supported these men for 15 years and built a strong bond with each of them.
Ken Harper
Ken was asked many times to become a program manager. We believed he could successfully lead a great team because was well liked and respected by the people he supported, as well as their families and co-workers. In 2006 Ken transferred to Hammer’s Arrowwood, a newly opened children’s home. As fate would have it, two years later the timing was just right for Ken to become the program manager at Arrowwood. He successfully led his team for eight years. Then came word in 2015 that the individuals that Ken and his team supported, would be moving into a new Hammer home. Each member of Ken’s team stated: “I’m going wherever Ken is going.” The true testament of a great leader.

Thank you, Ken, for all you do for your team and for the people you support. We all want to go wherever you go.

TECHNOLOGY
FROM FACE-TO-FACE TIME TO FACETIME By Brandon Eddy, Director of Nursing With iPads and FaceTime, the nursing team can collaborate to assess the situation.
H
ow can technology help nurses provide better care to the people Hammer supports?
This question was posed to the nursing team. Could we use technology to perform our duties more efficiently without losing the “face-to-face” time with those we serve? The answer seemed obvious – use FaceTime on an iPad. For anyone familiar with the human services industry, it is no surprise that we have a staffing shortage in our work force. At the same time, there continues to be an increased demand for the types of services that Hammer provides. As a result, we are constantly challenged to think of new and innovative ways to bring technology into our everyday work. A few years ago the nursing team was approached with the idea of using technology in our daily work, and we as a team decided to focus specifically on iPads. We were asked to consider whether iPads could help decrease the number of urgent care visits in our home and apartment programs. In our evaluations we noted that responses to incidents like paper cuts or bug bites varied greatly from one DSP to another. From my personal experience as an on call nurse, I knew there had to be a better way to help DSPs support those we serve, short of having the on call nurse make an in-person visit to each individual that needed assistance. We decided that providing iPads in the houses would be a huge benefit to the individuals
The nursing staff taking a FaceTime call from a Hammer staff member.
we support as well as to the nursing staff. Hammer received a generous grant from GIVING WoMN for $12,000 in February 2015 that paid for 48 iPads to be used in our homes. We started noticing the benefits almost immediately. Now, with the iPad, a staff member can communicate both verbally and visually with Hammer nurses in real-time. Because the nurse can see and hear the situation at hand, it essentially serves as the “urgent care” appointment, and when an individual we support truly needs in-person medical attention, they get it. The iPads allow the nursing team to provide better triage care, and DSPs get the professional direction needed to support each individual. The iPads have decreased Hammer’s urgent care visits by roughly ten visits a month. Those ten visits keep the ten individuals we support in the comfort of their home or apartment instead of at unnecessary doctors’ offices. The decreased visits also allow the ten staff to serve more than one person at a time, which is critical during this workforce challenge. Overall, people remain happier and healthier. Without completely removing a human from the process, the iPads act as a valuable supplement to the services we provide. The iPads offer a sustainable solution for the future for long-term care and group home nursing. At Hammer, we know that the use of technology is the critical link to providing a full life to the people we support. Hammer Discoveries | 15

he sweet smell of homemade cookies wafted through the building as our long-time volunteers baked and served cookies to the donors that stopped by Hammer on Give to the Max Day — November 17. People served by Hammer rely on you to provide them with a home that is accessible for their aging needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Your generosity creates homes for a lifetime! Thanks to you, individuals with developmental disabilities will remain active, age gracefully, and live in dignity in their Hammer home. We were thrilled to have 164 of you contribute over $100,000.
A Match Made in Heaven! A very special thank you to the family members that pulled together a $40,000 match. Their goal was to help motivate and encourage you to give generously: Double the dollars, double the impact. All donations received on Give to the Max Day were matched. Your gifts are they key to reaching our goals and continuing our good service. Every gift, large and small, makes a difference in the lives of individuals supported by Hammer.
(Left to right) Volunteers Carol Gottschalk, Jo Ann Koltes, and Jean Nelson baked homemade cookies for everyone who stopped by Hammer's central office to drop off their Give to the Max Day donation.
