CHAPTER CCH CHA CHAPT CHAP HAP HAPTE HAPTER HA city in flux
Man che ster
For this project, I eorporated 3 ideas in to one book which i created around the subject of Manchester. Idea 1: The modernisation of machester. idea 2: the non-restoration of old buildngs( neglectfulnesss). Idea 3: The restoration of buildings, neglecting it’s own history and of manchester.
For this project, I had to produce an end product which showed ‘city in flux’. And in fact this (‘city in flux) is what it was called. At first I was a confused to what the final outcome should be and lis led me to be more confused to what research i needed to carry out. Howver, by craeting brainstroms and ‘decrypting’ the brief, I found the ‘city in flux’ brief to be a very ‘open brief’. From this moment it was very important to narrow this ‘openness’. Therefore, I decided to go to a city and produce some primary research I went to the city of manchester and took photography of whcih inspired me and most importantly took pictures of the three main ideas i had in mind before i went to manchester: 1. Modernisation of manchester 2. non restoration of old bulidings. 3. Restoration of buildings (losing its heriatge).
After i had set out of what to find in machester I TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS OF ‘THINGS’ WHCIH REALTED BACK TO MY 3 IDEAS/ CONCEPTS WHCIH ARE GOING TO BE THE Themes which are going to be tackled and exposed as a final piece of work. As i had tsaken a lot of photograps, i edecided to create a book about the city of manchester looking at the 3 ideas which i started with and created 3 chapters. Firstly looking at the modernisation of manchester, then the non restoration of old buildings, which are being neglected and finally the restoration of buildings whcih are being restored, but the buildings are losing their heritage and its history. The buildings need to be restored in a way that it doesnt lose it heritage and history.
whilst I was researching into the different styles/ themes of work in graphic design i came across some styles which really caught my eye and got me looking deeper into them. One of the main styles of design which really inspired me was ‘white space’. To strat off my research i ‘bullet pointed my’ my ideas and characteristics down to help me start off of what to research about. One of the main charateristics which influenced me the most to create the final end result of the book was simplicity. As i started to looker further and deeper into ‘white space design’ i came acroos similar design practices such as ‘minimalism’ and ‘simple design. Theses styles really inspired of how design can be so simple yet strong visually. These strong simple messages are so effective that it makes it confusing to how it works. As i wanted to give 3 main messages about manchester; modernsiation of manchester, non restoration of old buildings and restoration of buildings that lose their heritage and history. As simpllicty can give a strong message easily and understandable i Therefore wanted to incorporate these design styles into my work/ final book. As I accepted these ideas into my design work for the city in flux project, I started to embrace the modernsim (design theme of work) style of design. These modernism style of design included basic and less use of colurs. To keep a consistent modernism thinking style of work I kept as simple as possible in relation to the styling/ layout of the book (final outome of city in flux). To get some inpiration in relation to the shapes and structure of layouts of my book i looked at the ‘bahaus movement’ which showed visually what modernism was about; basic shapes, straight lines, geometric, symmettry etc. In addition, To keep as simple as possible, i made sure i used minimal colours (1 - 2 colours) and small, minimal text. Therefore, the final book is very visual, which makes each page very understandable and gives a strong message which has a wider audience to which is easily understandable and taken in. To create the book i sued a variety of tools ranging from cameras to adobe photoshop and adobe indesign. The photographs i took using the camera was edited in adobe photoshop as this software allowed me to have access to a variety of visual effects, which in return allowed me to create a visually pleasing post edit photographs. Adobe indesign was used as this programme aided me in laying out the content of the book from images to text.
Emerging from the modernist and constructivist ideals, the Swiss Style can be defined as an pursue for simplicity - The principle “form follows function - As a consequence of this principle, most of the Swiss Style is devoted to the minimal elements of style such as typography and content layout rather than on textures and illustrations.
for this project I had to create my own typography. FRom the start of this task I started to sketch out different styles of typography whilst looking at other designers work for inspiration. I researched specifically at the typography that inspired me, for example; Typography that are bold, clear, strong and simple. As I carried out further into my research I assigned 4 main characteristics for my typography to have; Modern, simple, Clear and Bold. I used gridpaper to draw out my typography and then I digitalised my drawings by using a software whcih allows me to do this called adobe illustrator. THis software allowed me to make simple changes to typography, whcih made a difference. I called my typography ‘slice’, as it represents/ expresses the ‘slice cuts’ in the typography. These little slcies and the typography have been mainly been inpired by modernsim.

WHen i was first given the brief i made sure this time i tackeled the brief ‘fuul’ and that i understood completley, so that i could get straight into my work. To make things clearer for myslef, i made a number of checklists and brainstorms to clarify of what to produce and what the purpose is. ‘Earth Artifact’ is the brief name that was given to us. ONe main themes of this project is the ‘Golden Record’. Therefore, i researched into this and found that it was an actual record which had all (sounds, pictures etc) embedded into it’ It was an ‘Artifact’ of EArth. After I had this clarified, I started to research what are main themes/ artifacts of earth. I wanted to create a message into my work, so it is justifiable why my design should be sent inot space, such like the ‘Golden Record. I had a number messages I wnated to send; political, social ad economical messages, but i went with the economical message as this idea of mine had a strong message that is such a big issue but it is being ignored. I went to send a message/ educate about ‘Global Warming’. Just talking ‘global waming’ is such a big/ broad issue, therefore i had to narrow the message down and i found out through my research some of the main/ key themes of global warming. 1. The negative effects of global warming. 2. Global wamring could lead to rise in sea levels, which could cause great devastation. In order to send messages through my design i needed to research into artists/ designers who design political, economical messages. I found that simple designs were quite effective as its very easy to understand and therefore has a wider audienceavailability. One of the main infuluebces i had in relation to my design style was in a klecture where the toopic of visual metaphors arose. Visual metahors was very strong in design as it needed very little text and would make conveying a message very easy as it acts as a message and a rhetorical device. At the end i made numerous posters and put them in a corckboard, the one you would see in a crime investigation notice boards. This way it would look like that global warming is a big issue and the problems need to be solved and need to be stopped like a crime would need to be.

For this project I created a series of posters which I stuck to a corckboard, which were pinned down. I tried to go for this look/ finish as it represented a crime scene as this represnts global warming as a crimes scene which needs to be tackled. Furthemore, the posters showed the different aspects/ issues of global warming. The messages were given as a visual metaphors not big paragraphs as visuals appeal to a wider audience. In addition, it gives a more subtle message and makes it more undertandbale and is almost like a rhetorical tool.
