THE _ LOST _ SOUL(thesis) The thesis began with an exploration of the idea of GHOSTS. I began to look at ghosts as wraiths made of both memory and desire, and laid this idea on the city to read “sites. Sites get their meaning and identity from the memories that people have had of them. A new forced built intervention on a site deprives it of its desire to hold back certain collective memories and eventually the historical identity that used to unite the community of the place, gets erased from the city. The intention of the thesis is to integrate the memories of the inhabitants of a site as an ingredient to build. Design began with overlaying RMIT Design Hub Building over Old Bewery layout. Those parts of RMIT building are kept intact where there are remaining parts of Brwery on site and the parts destroyed is where ghost of Brewery takes over. This ghost deforms everything it touches producing uncanny spaces. State Library

HAUNT_

Before RMIT Design Hub was built there used to be a brewery on the site. When RMIT bought this land they demolished everything that was there, thus depriving site of its original memories. Since, the old brewery building wasn’t repected so the design concept is that ghost or spirit of this building is now haunting the new RMIT design hub building.

PERMEABLE_(studio) Multi-purpose Building

The aim of this building is to celebrate all these cultures in Melbourne. Hawker style markets, stalls and booths are to be introduced to make these retails shops more inviting for the people. The retail area might be divided into certain zones (using different levels making use of the natural slope of the site) each representing a zone with a different culture that is in Melbourne e.g. Chinese, Aboriginal, Greek, Vietnamese, Korean etc.

A performance space with a stage is also given to celebrate festivals of all these different cultures. The intention is to make this building a “Cultural Hub in Melbourne. It has been observed that people of Melbourne love places like stalls or booths with a casual setting. Few of such examples are night markets in Melbourne and setup by Crown Casino at Chinese New Year. Keeping these things in mind this building seeks to celebrate diversity and cultures of Melbourne within an urban setup by welcoming it into the centre of the city.

TENSGRITY_PAVILION_ PRODUCTION OF DIGITAL SPACE NEW YORK (COMPETITION ENTRY)

(Undergraduate Work)

Types of Interactive Spaces: -Public gathering or event generating spaces [Courtyards, Cafeteria] -Transitional Spaces [Staircases, Bridges, Corridors Paths & Approaches]

Conclusions from Relevant Research:

-Courtyard must contain plants and trees to create view for other spaces, trees and building shadows seating arrangement which chang with sun.

-Staircases break horizontal circulation into vertical circulation, it is a transitional space, it may be exposed or covered, exposed staircases gives sculptural appearance.

-Bridge is also a transitional space it connects 2 spaces and gives horizontal circulation at different levels; it should provide a visual connectivity.

Research On Studios:

-Isolate studios for sound insulation. -Workshops (wood & metal) should be in range of studios.

Performative_Architecture: Digital Installation_ Inflatable structure, lights, projectors, sensors, speakers

https://vimeo.com/groups/pas/videos/32180255 (studio journal)

A performative installation piece of generative design; this project consisted of multiple systems in place that create immersive environment. An entire semester was spent learning behavioural coding to design a spatial experience that continually responds to human presence. Physically, the structure was designed with digital fabrication techniques and put together lightweight textiles using sewing machine. The intelligent swarming patterns were linked to the encoded light and sound behaviors designed by teams to react to light triggers and presence.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWING

Holes to put in thread to hold the lantern.

Ribs curving inwards to hide the inner core and for the desired lighting effects

Central core containing battery pack, LEDs and switch.

Discs holding holding the ribs and the central core together

Designing of a lamp was required for the final installation. This lamp was to act as a light source, which when taken closer to light sensor will effect readings on it thus initiating a response. The design was to be as sophisticated as installation itself. Thus, with the help of grasshopper script this lamp was made out of persperx. Removable disc so that batteries can be changed when required.
