Abstract In this booklet, research, precedents, sketches, and other things are arranged in the same sequence as they were done while working on this project. The project starts off with an urban analysis of the Melbourne CBD in a group of 4 students. After the detailed urban analysis, initial concept was explored with few concept models. In the following weeks parti diagrams were made and finally things were taken to computer. There is a strong influence on the design after reading the book “Shape as Memory” by Michael Leyton and movie “The Elephant Man”. The new inspirations for design were further developed using sketches and diagrams. These ideas were then finalised after doing number of iterations on 3D model.

INTRODUCTION_
Throughout the semester the issues of university identity, site identity (based in ritual, location and memory), the neighboring contextual legacy of architectdesigned encounters with history and the mosaic pattern of small scale artisanal production in the central business district were explored.1 After the issues on site and its vicinity were recognized research was done in order find an appropriate way to approach design. Precedents were found, sketches were done and the ideas which came out of it were developed which lead way to the final design.
cub site The new RMIT Design Hub on the corner of Swanston and Victoria Street is an important new site for design research, innovation and production. The building is an important new representation design in a university setting and the city. In this studio an opportunity was provided to redesign a new Design hub at RMIT. 4

SITE HISTORY_
Before RMIT Design Hub building was built on site their used to be a Brewery on Site. This Brewry building was very famous in Melbourne. There was a hotel on the corner of this brewery site . The main purpose of the hotel was to provide a place to exhibit and sell beer.

INITIAL CONCEPT_
As time passes, the occupants move on and are replaced by new occupants. The memory of the previous occupants of thespaces echoes in the hollowness of space. Old building on site was demolished but its spirit remains. This spirit or ghost of the old building is taking over the body of the new one.
What is a Spirit? Spirit is: - Formless, but posses the body of the new. - No shadow of its own. - Reminds of the old. - Transparent. - Surprise and Unexpected. - Can walk through walls. 14

Shape as Memory Michael Leyton_
This book explains that how deformations, marks or scratches on an object are a hint of the processes that object has undergone. If these processes were to be reversed the original object can be retrieved. e.g.
The history inferred from a rotated parallelogram.
Memory is stored in assymetries i.e. present asymmetry is understood as having originated from a past symmetry. Memory is erased by symmetries i.e. symmetry in the present is understood as having always existed. 26
What is a Design Hub? According to the RMIT website the vision for Design Hub was as follows: - Cross- pollination of ideas and expertise among a range of disciplines - Groups should be able to fine tune their spaces according to their requirements. - Teams may stay from 6 months to 3 years. -Workshop ofr physical models - Ability to take info from internet and then broadcast it
