1. Rise Up Located in Accra, Ghana, this is a youth soccer facility that is open to the community around it. The facility includes a health and wellness, training, residential, and educational elements. Rise Up draws inspiration from animal architecture, employing innovative passive systems which allow for a highly tuned, environmentally responsive architecture in a location where access to utilities is unreliable. The buildings rely on their height to naturally ventilate by drawing cool air from below ground up through the central atria. A continuous ramp creates multilevel circulation without the use of an elevator, and the irrigated timber structure serves multiple functions as a vegetated, cooling facade, fire protection strategy, and carbon sink. The resulting iconic forms serve as beacons to the community and foster a sense of pride for the academy and the people of Accra.

Programs used: Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator Partner Project

Project located on NE corner of site to maximize human traffic.

35,000 sf program divided into four areas to create repetition and movement.

The form is inspired by anthills outside of Accra.

A split level layout is used to allow a continuous ramp around the perimeter of the floor platforms.

The structure geometry draws inspiration from the traditional Kente cloths

Wood is chosen as the primary structure to keep with traditional materials.

Perforated metal panels patterned to match the Kente cloth spiral each pod.

Reflecting pools are placed below each pod to create an evaporative cooling effect.

2. Staff Collaboration Rooms In the fall semester of 2020, I had the opportunity to mentor with ACI Boland. This projects consisted of a lot of research and studying their Rehabilitation Hospital in Georgetown. In the beginning of the semester I had decided to study the staff flow in the rehab hospital and look at the experience from the staffs point of view. I followed the journey of a staff member in a rehab hospital and analyzed their patterns and view their perspective in their work day. With the research gained, interdisciplinary communication spaces were designed to allow staff members to come together and collaborate. These spaces will allow staff members to freely communicate without the fear of breaking HIPPA. The intended user of these spaces will be nurse, physicians, physical therapists, and assistant general staff.

3. Nunemaker Addition Nunemaker is the home of the honors program at the University of Kansas. It’s a two story concrete building with two classrooms and a lobby area that gives honor students a place to escape to. As the years go by, the honors program expands its community. It is a community of its own, known only to those who are a part of it. It a place where honors student can gather. We were given the task to design an addition to Nunemaker that is almost twice its size. This 19,000 square foot addition will not only be open to honors students, but will welcome everyone on campus.

4. Nunemaker Renovation In Fall 2018, I had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Dirt Works Studio. It is a design build studio that is presented with a project that needs improving. We were tasked with renovating the two classrooms located in Nunemaker Hall, the home of the honors program. The director of the honors program wanted the space to feel more open and welcoming to students. We designed and composed all of the construction documents and were given a budget of $95,000.

5. Study Abroad This experience was a once in a lifetime experience that I was fortunate to participate in. Going to Europe has definitely changed my perspective on the world, and architecture, for the better. Over the span of three and a half weeks, we were able to visit 9 different cities in three different countries. Each country gave me a different perspective of the world and architecture. While visiting each city, we documented our time spent there with a set of drawings. Doing so enhanced the experience even more. It was as though each city was a different time period. Italy gave me the perspective of an ancient city, France gave me the perspective of a modern city, and Spain gave me the perspective of the modern world fused with the old.

Cities: Rome, Siena, Florence, Lyon, Aux-in-Province, Marseilles, La Tourette, Barcelona, Madrid
