INITIAL RESEARCH ≽

Neri Oxman Selected Works Project Mood Neri’s Connection Design Brief

CHOSEN ARTIST— BIO-ARCHITECT

NERI OXMAN

VISUAL SYSTEMS 2 — Event Design

BIOGRAPHY Neri Oxman is an Architect, scientist, engineer, and inventor— who has combined science, art, technology, and design to create her art and philosophy. She founded The Mediated Matter Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010 where she established and pioneered the field of Material Ecology to deliver designs that align with principles of ecological sustainability. In addition to over 150 scientific publications and inventions, her work has been recognized at the World Economic Forum, where she was named a Cultural Leader in 2016 and is a member of the Expert Network. She was also honored with the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and the London Design Innovation Medal in 2018, and in 2019, Oxman received an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Contemporary Vision Award by SFMOMA. Her goal is to mother-nature the ecosystem of the world with her researches, inventions, and expressions combined with her pure curiosity.

WHY CHOSE HER? She has been one of my career role models as a female professional who strongly pursue her passion and pure curiosity; I thought to celebrate the whole series of creations she has made and her unique thinking processes with the power of graphic design to better communicate & spread her messages. I hope to build a cohesive branding system around the world she creates grasping the core value she carries in every piece as her life concept.

PROJECT MOOD This mood board conveys the overall look of Neri’s works and the environment surrounding her. Below is the list of keywords of my choice that well describe the bio-world she creates.

/ Multidiciplinary / Detailed / Mechanical / Macro & micro / Organic / Aspirational / Uniting / Growing / Augmenting / Alchemy / Expressive / New-normal

DESIGN BRIEF THREAD The thread was built to guide the direction for the event design. Keywords are carefully chosen to describe characteristics of Neri’s environment.

(a) who are we talking about

(a)

(b) what happens

(c) how it ends

Female professionals (b) begins to explore their individual curiosity of the biological world. (b2) With her pursuit in pure sense of wonder, (c) she generates new forms of interactions and perceptions in the universe with the structural creation of art.

/ Exploration / Biology / Curiosity / Sense of wonder / Nature / Interaction / Perception / Generate

GUIDING NARRATIVE WHO: I am a methodical and curious biologist/ environmentalist who love the art nature creates. (nature as art, biology as science, curious woman) WHERE: Processing chaotic experiments within the perfectly organized lab as usualwith my passionate multidiciplinary peers (Polished rooms, carefully working hands combined with bio-materials) WHAT: I am exposed to this micro but magnificently deep world of biology enjoying true interactions with nature for new research, inventions, and arts. (Physical connection of human + nature within the lab, bright future)

POSITIONING The festival will center on reflecting, expressing, and celebrating Neri’s mind and values with the theme of “growth and unity”. It’s an opportunity for the audience to view the world in her perspective that was formed by her pursuit in pure sense of Wonder; this fetivals enables visitors react and discuss visions with other passionate professionals within the space. Rather than being an exhibition of her works themselves— it’s about offering an experiential knowledge of what it means for us to be truly sustainable with the concept of growth.

AUDIENCE 01 Designers, technicians, engineers, biochemists, environmentalists, activists, and nature enthusiasts who began to question the status quo of current understandings of “sustainability” and want to foresee the role of design in the future. 02 Female professionals who seek a role model for living both strong & aesthetically as a woman in modern industries 03 Artists and any other expressionists who desire to seek inspiration from the natural world and technology.

LOCATION The Museum of Modern Art | New York Address: 11 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019, United States It plays a major role in developing and collecting modern art, and is often identified as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world.

DATES April 22nd– May 22nd, 2050 Apr.22nd is the earth day, and May 22nd is the World biodiversity day.

SELECTED PROJECTS As one of the first part of the research, I built mood board for 5 selected projects that represent Neri’s works. It is intended to capture the general visual tone: color, texture, and styling, etc.

AGUAHOJA ( 2014-2020 ) Standing five meters tall, Aguahoja is an architectural pavilion composed of the most abundant biopolymers on our planet. Its layered structure, known as a bio-composite, is designed as a hierarchical network of patterns optimized for structural stability, flexibility and visual connectivity. Combining shelllike and skin-like elements, the pavilion’s overall stiffness and strength are designed to withstand changing environmental conditions such as heat and humidity while retaining its flexibility.

Hanami Itagaki _23

SILK PAVILION 1 & 2 ( 2014-2020 ) The Pavilion is made of three interrelated layers. Its innermost primary structure is comprised of one-dimensional, braided steel-wire ropes. Its secondary structure is a two-dimensional fabric on which silkworms are positioned. The tertiary, three-dimensional structure is biologically spun with the output of 17,532 silkworms sourced from Teolo, Italy, one of the most extensive silkwormrearing facilities in Europe. In this region of Veneto, the tradition of sericulture and silk manufacturing blossomed during the 12th century Renaissance.

TOTEMS ( 2019 ) Totems addresses and speculates upon designers’ ability to chemically synthesize the ‘pigment of life’— as a functional material—and program its interaction across scales and species for the betterment of biodiversity. The Pavilion is made of three interrelated layers. Its innermost primary structure is comprised of one-dimensional, braided steel-wire ropes. Its secondary structure is a two-dimensional fabric on which silkworms are positioned.

LAZARUS ( 2018 ) Lazarus points towards an imminent future where wearable interfaces and building skins are customized not only to fit a particular shape, but also a specific material, chemical and even genetic make-up.

VISUAL SYSTEMS 2 — Event Design

Hanami Itagaki _29

GLASS 1 & 2 ( 2019 ) The platform is based on a dual heated chamber concept. The upper chamber acts as a Kiln Cartridge while the lower chamber serves to anneal the structures. The Kiln Cartridge operates at approximately 1900°F and can contain sufficient material to build a single architectural component. The molten material gets funneled through an alumina-zirconia-silica nozzle.

NERI OXMAN Experience the world of ‘design inspired nature’ through the eyes of Neri Oxman Operating at the intersection of technology and biology, architect and designer Neri Oxman is calling for a fundamental shift in the way we design and construct the built environment, from consuming Nature to augmenting her. With Material Ecology, Oxman has pioneered a field that promotes previously impossible opportunities for design; informing how buildings and products are made and how their shape and material composition may perform in harmony with the ecosystems. / AGRAHOJA (2014-2020) / SILK PAVILION 1&2 (2020) / TOTEMS (2019) / LAZARUS (2016)
