“One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind”: Peace One Day Global Campaign 2012

By Hanane Zahrouni Peace One Day is one of largest global campaigns, which occurs annually on 21 September - a date that will continue to live in epiphany. It is a day for wide-scale community action for UN agencies and aid organizations to carry out life-saving work contributing and assisting to those in need. With the aid of NUS National President, Mr. Liam Burns and union leaders across the globe, Peace Day is hoping to influence and launch a historic student partnership, joining forces with many key public figures, including Ambassador Jude Law and supporter Angelina Jolie.

Public commitment including the support from students assists in mobilizing international students on Peace Day using creative methods to lead this processes world-wide. Founder, Mr. Jeremy Gilley expresses that: “students can gather and encourage each together for music or sports events, conferences, exhibitions and debates – all in the name of peace.” The power of young people can make the changes OUR world needs.

To date, the campaign has travelled to Afghanistan resulting in the vaccination against Polio to over 4.5 million children and decreasing domestic and international violent incidents.

Founder, Mr. Jeremy Gilley says: "when you build a house, you start with one brick. If we want to build peace, we should start with one day.” A proven success to countries currently experiencing conflict; the aim of Peace One Day is to motivate and push the governments’ responsibilities and in time lead to a “Global Truce.” HZ What will you do to make peace on 21 September?
