What Is A Myth? Myths have existed for many years, they are still very important in today's society. A myth is defined as a traditional story, trying to explain the way the world is, its early history and to try and explain fact or a phenomenon experiences. Trying to get answers to common questions such as who made the universe and people, it is believed that myths, gods and religion were created. For people from early history, myths were like science as they were able to understand how things worked and can answer questions that are asked today in modern science. For example, the well known myth that is taught today in school curriculum is the story of Adam & Eve. These are the first two people believed to be created by god and that from them the population has continued to grow. It is also believed that god built the world in seven days, and each day he added something new until the world was ready. Even though it is believed that stories within the myths are usually impossible, they try to send out a message which will have an important religious or social meaning hidden beneath. Myths are passed down generation to generation which can cause them to become less valid. This can lead a myth to be a misinterpretation of the truth and become slightly distorted and exaggerated.

Greek Myths - Medusa The myth I have decided to research into is a classic greek myth that has been known for thousands of years and one that only not very many people wont of heard of. Medusa was known as being one of 3 sisters, the others whos names are Sthenno and Euryale, which were gorgons, daughters of Phorcys and Ceto.

The stories explain that Medusa was once a beautiful maiden, a mortal unlike her sisters. She was a woman that was envied by other women who looked upon her, and caught the eye of many men. This was until the day she was caught being raped by the 'Lord of the Sea' Poseidon in Athena's temple. This enraged Athena and she believed that it was Medusa that was to be punished because she was violating Athena's temple by comitting a sexual act. Having made an eternal vow of chastity, people enagaginng in sexual activity in her temple would have been the ultimate deception. Reasons believed why Athena didnt punish Posidon was that the gods can't really punish each other because they are all about equal. She turned her into an extremely ugly woman with snakes for her hair and eyes that would change onlookers into stone, this was so that no male would ever show her affection again. Medusa's death was that she was beheaded by Perseus, a young man who was trying to rescue his mother from King Polydectes. He was challenged to retrieve the head of Medusa for the release of his mother. With the help of Athena and Hermes, they gave him winged shoes, a curved sword and shield of reflection. Perseus was able to enter the temple where Medusa was without being detected due to the helmet and was able to remove her head. With the mirrored shield he also was able to look at her reflection and slay her without being turned to stone. It is believed that when Perseus beheaded Medusa, she was pregnant as a winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor which was released from her blood when she was dying. The Chrysaor then later became the King of Iberia. Perseus was able to escape the sisters of Medusa in the temple unharmed with the help of his winged shoes and invisible helmet.

Perseus then used Medusa's head as a weapon during other battles as the eyes of the Medusa would still turn onlookers into stone. He was able to use it in the rescue of his mother. He eventually returned the head to Athena, who then placed it at the center of her shield as a symbol of her power, and her own capacity to turn her enemies into stone.

1837 Louis Daguerre created the first image that was fixed and did not fade which consisted of less than 30 minutes light exposure. He used a sheet of silver-plated copper. He polished the silver and coated it with iodine, which made the surface sensitive to light. He exposed to the light for a few minutes and then soaked the plate in a solution of silver chloride, creating a lasting image.

1000AD - The Pinhole Camera A man called Alhazen created the first pinhole camera (also known as the Camera Obscura.)

1829 Joseph Niepce and Louis Daguerre formed a partnership to improve the process Joseph had developed. After the death of Joseph, Louis developed a more effective method of developing photographs and named it after him1827 self – the daguerreotype. Joseph Niepce created the first photographic image using a camera obscura. He placed engraving coated in bitumen onto a metal plate and exposed it to the light. He then placed the metal plate in a solvent which an image gradually appeared but then became invisible.

1851 – Wet plate negatives Fred Archer used glass instead of paper and coated it with light-sensitive silver salts and this made the negatives more detailed. They only required a few seconds exposure, but they had to be developed quickly to stop the emulsion drying.

1841 Henry Fox creates the calotype process, which is the changing of negative images into positives. He sensitised paper to light with a silver salt solution, when exposed to light for a few minutes the image became black and the image would then be chemically developed, making it a positive.

1879 –Dry Plate Negatives Richard Maddox invented the gelatine dry plate silver bromide process, this meant that the plate absorbed light quickly and the plates could be stored for a period of time without the image fading. This meant the hand held camera was now possible.

1889 George Eastman created the flexible roll film which means the base was flexible, unbreakable, and could be rolled. This made the box camera a reality.

1913/1914 The first 35mm still camera was developed by Oskar Barnack. The 35mm refers to the width of the film that the camera takes, and is still one of the most popular choices of film to use.

1948 Edwin Land creates the Polaroid camera, he created the one-step process for developing and printing photos creating instant photography. The first films were sepiatone; black-and-white Polaroid film was introduced in 1950.These cameras produced images which concluding in being in pouches which had the chemicals squeezed and then had the peel-off negative to produce the positive image.

1973 Polaroid created the one-step processing with the SX-70 ‘spit out’ camera, which took the images and produced them to positives instantly.

Definition by ArtRepublic: Surrealism was an artistic and literary movement, dedicated to expressing the imagination as revealed in dreams, free of the conscious control of reason and convention. Dreams: Doorways into our imaginative mind. These created the Dada Surrealist movement, Dada as an anti-art movement which was an attack on 'civilised' standards.

This image is showing images being captured at fast shutter speeds to capture the moment. A moment that would be hard to capture again. This photographer has made the image have a lot going on with water being thrown and a chair being picked up and cats being tossed about with that it all blend together it looks like something that isnt real. This picture took about 28 attempts which is understandable as it looks difficult to perfect. “Life Magazine published the spread in 1948, featuring the version of the photo with no retouching. Visible is the fishing line, with two paintings and a stool dangling from a ceiling easel, along with the hands of an assistant holding a chair. Even today, this image is still considered a brilliant work of art.

Images That Show Surrealism

This image has used rule of thirds with where the subject is only present along the right vertical sector of the image. Only allowing to see half of the girls face makes the image stand out more and have more ambiguous meanings that just seeing her whole face. This image to me shows pain and emotion with what I would believe to be because of hat she looks like, which has been created in Photoshop. The artist of this image has appeared to have created another layer in Photoshop of a textured background which has been edited to fit over the face and give the girls face the cracked effect. Her eye is the subject focus of this image as it is what your eyes are drawn to straight away and it shows the most emotion in the image, you can see pain which could be due to external reasons as to being embarrassed, stands out to everyone else. I believe her eye also gives out the emotion of anger, as when you look at the image from a distance it looks like someone who doesn’t want you to invade or be looking at the image. The image uses depth of field with that the hair gradually gets out of focus and the face is pin sharp, making the image strongest part of the image which is what the readers are mostly viewing. Having the empty space behind her in the background makes the image have a much more lonely feeling, and leads viewers to suspect that something could be about to happen in this image. The cracks on the face could possibly explain reasons like secrets, and that she’s holding onto so many she can’t anymore, or possibly that she has been hiding behind a mask of who she really is and that who she really is, is coming to light. This image has a horror affect due to if someone young was to see this they would be scared which is what the image I believe is trying to achieve. This image looks to be created by artificial lighting which gives the image a sharper effect due to the lighting being strong and the image having a harsh tone.

This image has been manipulated in Photoshop to make it look like the hands are opening up to the world. This image is in the style of surrealism because it is an image which would be impossible to create. The artist has used two images and has edited them together in Photoshop. This image to me relates to god, and how people believe he created the world with his hands. The boat in this image is the subject focus of this image as it is what you are first drawn to in the image. The image being in black and white makes it have a more calming atmosphere. Having the black background as well makes the hands and the image stand out more. Rule of thirds has been used in the image with where the boat is on the horizontal sector lines. Depth of field has not been used in this image as all the image is in focus. This image could have the meaning of loneliness as the image is empty, and the boat could be to leave to another place, possibly showing the underlying meanings of why the photographer has taken this image to get away and show his feelings. The hands opening up to the boat could be a new start or beginning for the photographer.

August Sanders was a well known World War One photographer. In the 1920s, the world of photography changed and images were dictated on the role the would have on society. In the war, August took many photos which were frozen action and had many stories and meanings to tell.

Walker Evans is one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. His images were to help change the view of Americans. His best known work was of the great depression in America 1930’s.

This is one of Walker Evans most famous pictures. This woman was a symbolic image of the great depression with how poor her family was and that there was nothing she could do. These images create empathy and make us want to help them. This image of the soldier shows a blank expression which to me shows that at the point in time he appears to not be interested in much else apart from what he is expected to do which is to fight for his country which with how presentablehe looks can show he is dedicated to his country.

This image shows someone in a higher rank than the person in the This image also creates empathy making image before. This frozen time action shot of the pelican can say many things to the viewers of this image. The picture is one taken of the deadly results of the BP oil spill. Although it was a fatal accident, it was a cruel one which is going to take ages to fix. This pelican species are now at risk of being an endangered species. This image instantly makes you feel sorry for the bird and that you would want to try and help it. With the other pelicans in the image, you can see that this bird is the only one out of that group that has been affected, making you see that the bird is helpless. Other animals such as the Kemp’s Ridley turtle are also another endangered species which are now at risk of extinction due to the accident. There will be charity groups which will be dedicated to helping wildlife affected by the oil spill which will get viewers to want to donate to help, which will also try to help preventing this from happening again. This image will get viewers mad at the BP for what has happened. This image has only the affected bird in focus which I believe will be to make it the subject focus of the image.

The Earthquake that happen in Japan last year was unthinkable and many people lost their lives. This image shows emptiness, and the one emergency services person looks like he’s looking for survivors, which doesn’t look promising. The thought that they have to go through and tidy it all up bit by bit makes you want to go and help them but we know we can’t. Knowing that the person in the image is trying to rescue survivors is working for the Red Cross society will get people to donate to them to help them, as that is the most we can do. The disaster looks like it goes on for miles and miles and this makes the image have a more upsetting atmosphere. The person stood just overlooking the disaster looking like he has his hand to his face to me shows that he is either upset and lost about what to do as it will be difficult to find survivors. Knowing that many adults and especially children have been killed due to nature will change the history of Japan forever. The man is the subject focus in the image, as you look away from him you start to feel empathy as you see what he can see and it makes the disaster seem more surreal as you wouldn’t want to believe something like this has happened. The man’s clothing is the only object in the image with colour, the rest of the image just seems bleak due to the disaster.

Propaganda Photography

Propaganda images make statements about a situation. The media and photographers are selective about what is shown in there images or what images are shown to try and steer mainstream viewers into a particular direction about an event, for example, the world wars / politics / disasters. During the first and second world war, many posters went up all over the UK. The government wanted all men and women at home to help win the war, and persuade them to behave and act the way the posters tell them too. The posters tried to persuade the population about many situations, like the destruction that was happening was fully under control and necessary, that children needed to be evacuated, that women needed to help and many other examples. Here are some of the posters that were used in the war. The government in 1939 were desperatly trying to persuade the British population that their nation wasnt going to be completly destroyed, although the Nazi's and Hitler were planning their destiny. Knowing that being the only major power currently at war with Germany, the keep calm and carry on posters were distributed to remind citizens of their national character.

This poster is aimed This poster was at the mothers of the also a massive children whom still influence over remained in London the women in the and many other big UK. To show a cities. The clear messtrong independsage that this poster ent woman is trying to put saying 'we can do across is that the it!' will of helped children need to be women all over sent to the country believe that they to be safe and away from the bombings that could help and work in the factories. were going to hit. Seeing the young boy with a gun over his shoulder and wooden sword will make parents not want to put there kids in danger and want to send them to safety.

These World War Two posters will of influenced the country into believing they need to do what the government are saying is necessary. But will these posters be telling the truth? Or trying to push them away from the real reasons of war and whats happening and making them believe that they are safe? There are many more examples of these posters which many countries each used.

In 1989, football for many Liverpool fans changed forever. The Hillsborough Disaster was a moment in history which everyone heard about. On April 15th, Liverpool vs. Sheffield Wednesday was the game not to be missed, many fans turned up, unfortunatley, 96 of those Liverpool supporters were not to return home. The police that day had made the mistake of not taking proper control, leading to a human crush which left 96 dead and 766 injured. At this time in football, most stadiums had fences around the pitches to stop fans running onto the pitches. Kick off was due at 3pm, and in pens 3 & 4 behind one of the goals at about 2.50pm, they were full, yet there were still thousands of fans outside still wanting to get in. At 14.52pm, the police ordered a large exit gate - Gate C - to be opened to alleviate the crush outside the ground. A further 2000 fans then entered the tunnel to pens 3 & 4. This caused a mass crush, and fans were desperatly trying to climb over the fences to get to the less packed pens and onto the pitch to escape, supporters in the higher tiers were trying to help by pulling the fans up. At 3.05pm - one of the fences gave way in pen 3, causing people to fall on top of each other, and some resulting in being suffocated. The game was then forced to be stopped. Although authorities were now well aware of what was happening, there reaction was slow and badly co-ordinated. Firefighters with cutting gear had difficulty getting onto the ground and many many ambulances had been called, but could not get past the police and onto the ground as the police reported there was 'crowd trouble'. Only 14 of the 96 people who died managed to be admitted to hospital.

The Sun newspaper was massivly propganda itself. The newspaper story it shows above is what The Sun printed 4 days after the disaster, making it look like it was the fans fault and that the Police were the victims. They told about how the fans forced themselves in and that they targeted on the Police. Trying to make the UK believe that the Police were not at fault and that it was the hooligans that could not do as they were told. Images and stories shown in the papers across the UK showed the fans on the pitch and being crushed in the pens, but due to the stories they went with, to me many images look like the fans are rioting and fighting each other.

The images above look like the fans are going for the police. With the public not knowing that the police let too many people in and believing that many of them forced themselves in, it influences the viewers to think that it is their own faults theyve been crushed and to feel the blame should be on them and not the Police. Only just recently have the thousands of reports that the Police covered up and altered statements have come to light. Families of the 96 killed are finally getting to see justice for their loved ones. Its just not fair its taken so long.

Social commentary is quite similar to propaganda - in that they are images which try to persuade emotions and feelings. Social commentary images however, are designed to have that extra 'shock factor.' They express how someone feels about a certain aspect or nature of society. Usually, the motivation behind social commentary is to make a desired social change. Many images will make us want to feel sorry for the subject and make us want to help them.

Belgian photographer Frieke Janssens produced a series of photographs that show children smoking. The Images have that shock factor to them because it shows what will happen to the child and how they look so ill with smoking. It is designed to have the shock factor to stop people allowing young people to smoke. Frieke says : “[With Smoking Kids] I wanted to isolate the viewer’s focus upon the issue of smoking itself… there is a nod to less attractive aspects, on the line between the beauty and ugliness of smoking.”

Homelessness

This image to me shows great juxtaposition, with the homeless man with a few belongings in a bag, to the vacationers who will have spent a lot of money to enjoy the sun. It shows great sadness and make the image look really lonely for the man and want us to help him. The way the man is looking at the homeless person, it looks like he doesn't care as he has the luxuries and shows that this is probably mainstream view on homeless people. Mosts people will ignore them and say no to beggar's because it is believed they cannot be trusted. Some people may just fear them, as their as stories about the homeless steal. I believe putting this image in black and white would of helped the image to look like it was coming from his point of view, that the beautiful beach and seas mean nothing to him and they are bleak and to enjoy the sun really means nothing to him, he just worries about where to stay for the night. Same again, this image shows great loneliness as the man is on his own on the bench with a few possessions to his side. This image uses rule of thirds with where he is sat on the bench, and with having the empty space around him makes the image look more isolated and that no-one else is there because no-one else cares. Having the image in black and white to me makes the image appear to look more lonely and bleak, and because it is a lonely atmosphere photo, if the image was in colour, it wouldn't have the same effect and I dont think as many people would feel empathy. I believe images like these will speak to many people and get us to want to help them.

This image brought a tear to my eye. This image saddens me so much, to see how much pain he appears to be in and not being able to do anything and that no-one will help him. With the woman standing to the right, it shows great juxtaposition that she is clothed, has money and can have some luxuries unlike him. It makes her look very dominating in the image and that because she isn't helping and standing over him makes us feel even more sorry for him because if that was me I would want to help and couldn't just stand there and ignore him. He looks really isolated to the busy atmosphere around him, and the image being in black and white makes it clear that none of it matters to him. The image uses rule of thirds with where he is laid on the second horizontal image, and being down at his level makes us imagine the scene more at his point of view.

Once Upon A Time...

Images which tell a story. Storytelling is the conveying of event in words, images and sounds by improvisation or embellishment. E.g. Entertainment, Education, Guidance, Moral Values, Cultural Preservation. Storytelling through images goes right back to the Cave ArtCavemen. "Archeologists believe cave art was a way

for earlier man to “capture” the spirit of the animal they painted, making it easier to hunt." They also believed that once the animal had been drawn that the physical abilities were transferred to them. It is believed that these could of been ways to show that someone could of had a successful hunt or to show younger hunters what to do. These cavemen paintings are still now still now existent and tell great stories of history.

Nursery Rhymes

Nursery rhymes have been around for many, many years. These childrens songs are to believed to have underlying meanings. The ‘Ring a Ring o’ Roses’ Nursery rhyme is believed to be the most well-known of time. It has been sung since about the 1790’s and is believed to represent the reference of the great plague in London 1655. However this view did not appear until after the Second World War, and it is believed that the lyrics for the song don’t represent the plague very well. Everyone has heard of ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’. This nursery rhyme is believed to represent the Mediaval Great wool tax of 1275, in that a third of the tax went to the king and a third to the church. It was then believed in the 1980’s that it made reference to slavery, however most disagreed.

Schindlers List In Poland during World War II, Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis. This film is monumental in documenting what happened in the second world war. The journey I am going to document is about the little girl in the red coat. She is documented throughout the film and her coat being the only thing in colour throughout the whole film is what also tells the message in the film. In Schindlers list, the little girl first appears when Oskar is overlooking the city being raided by the German soldiers and he see's the little girl on her own among the panic and horror and you can see that he feels for her. During the roundup, a Nazi soldier fires at a single-file lineup of men, killing several with one bullet. Stricken by the nightmare below, Schindler sees the little girl in red entering one of the empty apartment buildings. There, she climbs the stairs and crawls under a bed for cover in a ransacked room. It was that moment Shindler decided he would do what he could to stop the Nazi's. We then dont see the little girl again until the scene in which Schindler is walking amongst the Nazi's digging up the buried Jews so that they can be burnt to destroy evidence of the slaughter that happened. Amongst the corpses, Schindler captures a glimpse of the red coat, and the little girl who has now been killed. The little girl in the red coat footage gives a feeling of hope. You think that she may be able to get away, that she has a chance, but unfortunatley that is not the case. She symbolizes the innocence of the Jews, as they were targetted for no reason.

A Journey Photography

To me this image shows the stage of a journey in a young person’s life where they are in their teenage years and experimenting. A lot of teenagers will want to experiment and try new things as they grow up and meet new people and learning and expressing who they are. However, this image looks like this is a primary school child as she is in the young girls dress and uniform. This looks like a girl who is shortening her journey by trying to grow up too fast. This image makes us believe that the girl is obviously going through troubling times to try alcohol and smoking. She could possibly be with the ‘wrong crowd’ due to the figure behind her which looks like someone watching over her possibly the person who is causing her to do this. The bag in the background looks like she could possibly be leaving home and trying to grow up already. This image can try to influence people to want to try and help her, which can be linked to social comment. There could be possibly bad situations going on in her home life for her to find ways to deal with it. This image makes me want to know what has happened in her past journey to lead up to this point and what happens in the future journey and to see what happens.

This image shows 2012 Olympic medallist Mo Farrah after becoming the first Briton to win the 10,000m title. This to me shows the final stage in the journey it has taken him to get there which is the celebration and happiness. His journey will have started with the hours of training to become the best, and then actually taking part in the race. This moment for him will have been overwhelming because all of his hard work has proved himself and he has made history. Many athletes will go through this journey. This image shows that with the flag he is proud of what he has done. His passion for sport will of helped him to get to this moment and the dream of winning will have been a great motivation.

Images That Show A Journey

Bradford Impressions Gallery The Road to Wigan Pier exhibition by George Orwell (1937) is a collection of images which document the bleak living conditions of the working class in Yorkshire and Lincolshire. Six newly graduates were the ones to collect and take these images. What is the name of the work and who is the photographer? Russel Boyce - Hull's abandoned fishing docks. Describe what you can see. The image is of the old abandoned fishing docks in Hull which the steel and metal is starting to rust. The buildings are empty and we can see they havent been used in a long time. Do you like the image? Explain your answer. Yes, as Hull is the closest city to my home, this is where I spend time shopping and days out. I liked being able to see the history of the city. Consider the composition - Where are things placed in the image? What effect does it have? The photographer has taken the image with the abandoned buildings filling the left half of the frame using rule of thirds which then has the metal in the front which is giving it a depth perspective. The sidewalk is then filling the right of the image frame which acts as leading lines and gives a sense of loneliness and emptiness. What is the point of view - Where was the camera positioned? Close up or far away? What does this imply? The picture has been taken in the midde of the path with the metal placed up close in the image so that the rest of the image has an empty feeling and we can see that it has been abandoned. What has been included and what has been left out of the image? The empty buildings which have been included show that and the rusting metal which leads us to believe that the whole industry has declined. It is left to look empty and that anyone to be down there would be lonely. However what has been left out of this image is the part of the dock which is still running today, only part of the docks have been closed and abandoned but this image influences you to think different. Are any relationships formed between this image and the other works in the exhibition? Is it part of a series? How does this effect its meaning? This image is part of a series which Russel Boyce has portrayed of Hull. He documented the dockland and its community. He photographed a one-parent family which was showing the struggle of living and using it as a call for social change. These images are also showing a decline in the manual work. What associations does the work have for you? What does it make you think about? How does it make you feel? As I stated before Hull is the closest city to me so I have spent days there and shopping through my life. I liked seeing someone had done some work on Hull as I know the area. The lone-parent family images link to me as well as I am from a lone parent family and I can see how difficult it is for my mum, it makes me want to persue social change.

My name is Hannah and I am a Photographic Journalism Student at Leeds Metropolitan University. I have had a passion for photography since a young age and really enjoy being behind the camera creating images for the world to see. I completed an A-Level in photography in which I got a B in and once completing my course I knew that photography is what I wanted to do as a career. I chose to do Photo Journalism as I also enjoy writing and expressing my views on topics. I have recently been doing some work for a photography company which I thoroughly enjoy as I am meeting new people and documenting moments for them. In the future I hope to work with a Newspaper or Magazine company taking images for them and possibly writing articles and I would also like to do a bit of free-lance photography and hopefully become well-known.
