01 repurposing rincon Location: Rincon, Puerto Rico Studio: Fall 2012 The Tres Palmas Research Center was a two-part project that involved the design of guest housing and office headquarters for Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization located on the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in Rincon, Puerto Rico. Part 1 involved the repurposing of shipping containers into guest villas, while Part 2 made use an existing column structure on site to turn into office headquarters. A site visit to Puerto Rico combined with extensive research allowed for an immersive understanding into the needs of the organization and a consideration of the climate, local materials, and sustainable solutions. LEED principles were studied in parallel and incorporated into the designs.

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark Studio: Spring 2012 The Interior Architecture Study Abroad program in Copenhagen allowed for the opportunity to consider a local site with local concerns: a support and rehabilitation center for Danish veterans returning from war. The center was designed with transition and healing in mind.

FLINT Flint is a naturally abundant stone in Denmark, although not commonly used as a building material. It is traditionally used in parts of Southern England, combined with lime mortar or other stones to build walls. Flint has a translucent, milky quality and a pearly shine, which make for interesting interactions with sunlight and running water. Furthermore, the natural manner in which the stone splits creates smooth but irregular texture and shapes.

03 the icarus chair Assignment: design a chair that is to be CNC-milled from a 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood. This stool consists of 15 pieces of plywood joined together. The curved pieces move freely, except for one middle piece, which holds the chair together.

04 office for a global brand Location: 50 Park Ave, Manhattan Studio: Fall 2011 The headquarters for global book publishing company Taschen was to be located in two floors of the “PepsiCo building at 50 Park Ave. Considerations for the design of the office included both presenting a face for the Taschen brand, as well as creating an open and inspiring environment for the workers. A series of reflective, pivoting walls are located throughout the office and act as dividers and thresholds, while simultaneously providing a constantly shifting landscape where everything is new and nothing stagnant. It encourages a sense of movement and change in a brand that is interested in being creative and dynamic.
