FUTURISM
It appears an overwhelming number of designers have taken a trip to the future, bringing back inspired designs that reflect an artistic odyssey through space. Its not quite Star Trek however, through the use of metallic finishes, combined with structured silhouettes and wo-toned pieces, Futurism has finally been re-birthed.

HOUSE OF HOLLAND
Eclectic prints, a modern revival of florals, furs and silks are back. Alexander Wang has once again done leather favours, whilst Givenchy has miraculously managed to make hand-beaded fringing look sophisticated. A half-hearted attempt at this trend will only get you nowhere, fast. If you want to ace it, go for patterns on patterns and fur on leather.

FASHION WEEK TRENDS
Military has made its comeback this year with some of the most influential designers being inspired by The Cold War period. Top Shop lead the pack, combining khaki pieces with their famous trench coats, creating the motif of an undercover spy. Max Mara, constructed a more literal vision by creating a soldier inspired look featuring army green dresses with combined with hats and large belt buckles to add to the theme. WORDS BY SALLY SMIRK

BRAND NEW TATUM MACARTNEY
WE INTERVIEW TATUM MACARTNEY WHO IS AN AMAZING FASHION DESIGNER WITH A STRONG DESIGN AESTHETIC AND DESIGN MORALS. SHE TALKS ABOUT HER INFLUENCES, HER INSPIRATION AND HER NEW COLLECTION.
Who would be the most influential designers to you? The most influential designers to me are those who persistently push my view of what is normal. Designers such as Givenchy, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo (Comes des Garcons) blend art with innovation and fashion becomes the outcome. They are consumed by their devotion and never fail to deliver collections that create a sense of awe and wonder and inspiring shockwaves within me. They are whom I aspire to work for, their dedication I long to instill and aura I yearn to create. What is your design philosophy? Within each collection I intend to translate my personality, my memories, my experiences and my knowledge into an audible visual language. With a focus on luxurious fabrics and quality craftsmanship I love exploring the female form and the way in which the body can be manipulated through fabric and styling. My aesthetic exudes an effeminate quality that blends elegance with innovation. Yet, as a young fashion designer, it is continually evolving and progressing into a more distinct voice.
What inspired you for the collection Imprinted Memories? The female form has been the catalyst for my ongoing fascination with the way in which fabric can create a desired persona. It can not only emphasise or hide, but also manipulate the body. This collection is modern adaptation of the traditional Japanese art of Shibori. Constant experimentation triggered my fascination with the way in which the fabric can be manipulated into organic forms, which enthrall the body in an elegant display of light and shadow. Where do you hope to be in 5, 10 and 20 years time? In the next 5 years I want to be shaped into a polished, sophisticated designer after working for a prestigious fashion house, from which I will begin to launch my own label. After another 5 years I will begin to have collections entering international runways as my brand becomes recognised globally I hope that after another 10 years passes, the Tatummacartney label will become a well-known name, which emanates the qualities of those designers that once inspired me.

ROCK
BABY
How to pull of the ‘Minimalist Rocker’ for any occasion with the use of shoulder pads, leather, studs and the staple colour black. Add a bit of Kurt Cobahn with a modern twist to your outfits.
CASUAL
T
o achieve the minimalist rocker look for a more casual event try adding an old ‘band tee’. This
works well with both pants, skirts and shorts and brings out a real Kurt Kobhan feel in your look. If a band tee feels to manly for you wear a baggy ‘boyfriend; style t-shirt instead, this gives the same style only less mascualine. Another alternative is to wear a pair of pattern pants or shorts. Add a few rips to these jeans and you are on your way to rock!

A MISTAKEN IDENTITY Style. A concept that is often misconstrued by those unknowledgeable enough to acknowledge that there is no right answer when it comes to the term. Contrary to many beliefs, style is one of the greatest ways to individualise every human being from one another.
Be it a local surfer, or the suit-clad Italian enjoying his morning coffee, each person possesses a particular style that best reflects their personality. Style and fashion are two words that are often acknowledged to have the same meaning; when in fact; they are merely two words that fall within a similar category. Style is a concept. It is an expression of personality through clothes. Fashion, on the other hand, is the trends that we use to enhance their individual style. If style is a sum, then consider the equation fashion + personality. When it comes to style, there is no right answer. Take my wardrobe for example. A $5 red sheer blouse hangs from my clothes rack courtesy of my old friend The Salvos. Draping next to this is a black lace dress (Blak Luxe) that cost me a weeks worth of salary. Underneath these sit one of my most memorable purchases in recent history; a pair of children’s fur leopard print Nikes. Looking at this combination of clothes you’d most likely think I could easily be mistaken for Kanye and Eminem… on steroids. However, contrary to this potentially uncomfortable mistaken identity crisis, the clothes that I have kept for many years are the ones that have been accumulated in the strangest of situations. Whether it’s from a children’s shoe store, a second hand shop, or simply borrowed (stolen) out of your nanna’s closet (many thanks for the home-made jewel-encrusted jumper), style is something that doesn’t evolve in one shopping trip, and it is certainly not something that can be bought with copious amounts of money.

RUMI FROM FASHION TOAST www.fashiontoast.com
The most stylish people are not necessarily the ones who spend more than is necessary on clothes; it’s the people who are self-aware and comfortable within themselves that can adopt a style that they believe in. At the end of the day, fashions will come and go; but style is eternal.
