FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR HARRY CHRISTOPHERS With the 2012–2013 Season, I have curated a collection of performances with a great deal of personal meaning. The remarkable volume of beautiful compositions of the Baroque and Classical eras allows the Handel and Haydn Society to continually present music that is fresh and surprising. It is special for me to be able to bring to Boston audiences works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Purcell, whom I believe to be the most talented of British composers. We look towards the future and to our 2015 Bicentennial celebrations by honoring the past and H&H’s involvement in the development of classical music in America. Highlights include Bach’s Magnificat; Mozart’s final symphony, Jupiter; Purcell’s The Indian Queen, a work I cherish and revere and that has not been performed at H&H since 1995; and Handel’s theatrical Jephtha, premiered in the United States by H&H in 1855 and last performed in 1867. This season also marks the 159th annual performances of Handel’s Messiah, a work that is unmistakably linked both with H&H and with the holidays in Boston. It is a privilege to lead such an inspired and inspiring group as H&H’s Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus. Our musicians and I will be joined by established guest conductors and soloists as well as new and emerging talents to take you on a musical journey that I hope will delight and enlighten you. I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts and to sharing incredible musical experiences with you.

Henry Purcell’s last major work, The Indian Queen, receives special treatment in this compelling interpretation by Harry Christophers and the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus. Last performed by H&H in 1995, this semi-opera surrounds Queen Zempoalla of Mexico and focuses on her resistance against Montezuma’s invading Peruvian army. Adapted from John Dryden’s and Sir Robert Howard’s 1664 play, Henry’s brother Daniel completed the opera after his death.

Considered one of the finest Handelians in the world, Harry Christophers brings Jephtha to Symphony Hall audiences for the first time since 1867. Premiered in the US by the Handel and Haydn Society in 1855, the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus bring a legend to life: the oratorio tells the story of Jephtha, a commander for the Israelites against the Ammonites, and his daughter Iphis, who is betrothed to one of Jephtha’s soldiers, Hamor. With a stellar cast, Christophers will enliven this dramatic story of passions and redemptions, and showcase the transformative powers of Handel’s music. JOIN H&H ON TOUR Before playing in Boston, Handel Jephtha will be going on a tour of the West Coast—and you are invited to join us for this once in a lifetime experience! Email tour@handelandhaydn.org for more information.
The 2015 H&H Bicentennial will be a celebration of the people of Boston—a reflection upon 200 years of musical innovation and education that embodies the cultural heritage of the city. H&H has a rich history of introducing great works of music to America, and has been an integral part of many moments in US history. From the US premiere of Handel’s Messiah in 1818 to a performance at President Lincoln’s memorial service in 1865 to the creation of its education program in 1985, H&H has contributed to the American performance tradition. Bicentennial festivities will commence with the 161st annual performances of Handel Messiah in December 2014 and will close with Messiah in December 2015. Throughout the year, H&H will showcase the rich history and vibrant future of the institution through exhibits, lectures, free concerts, and more.

KAREN S. AND GEORGE D. LEVY EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM The Handel and Haydn Society’s Karen S. and George D. Levy Educational Outreach Program provides music education to over 10,000 children annually in communities throughout eastern Massachusetts. Lowell Mason, best known as the founding father of music education in American public schools, enjoyed a long association as musical editor and later as President of H&H, starting in 1820. Almost two centuries later, H&H continues to foster Mr. Mason's legacy of providing students, mainly in underserved communities, with the joys of classical music through a variety of accessible and delightful programs. 90% of program costs are subsidized by H&H to ensure total accessibility for families and schools. The Vocal Apprenticeship Program (VAP) provides talented young singers in grades 3–12 the opportunity to sing in a chorus, perform with professional musicians, and learn music theory.
SING, LEARN, AND SMILE WITH US! For information on program content and school visits, please contact Director of Education Robin Baker at rbaker@handelandhaydn.org or 617 262 1815. Vocal Apprenticeship Program auditions are held in the fall and spring. Learn more about VAP auditions at handelandhaydn.org/education.
The Vocal Quartet visits schools with original presentations developed to teach music history in an entertaining, age-appropriate way. Collaborative Youth Concerts bring choruses from different high schools together to perform in their home communities alongside Handel and Haydn Society musicians. Coaching and masterclasses led by musicians and conductors of the Handel and Haydn Society are offered to high school choruses and soloists as well as college ensembles. Join us for a student concert, school visit, or other educational event this season. For more information, visit handelandhaydn.org/education.
