Making Pole-Top Damage a Capital Offense I-Corp Is Changing The Way Poles Are Capped, Treated... and Cost-Accounted? Nature destroys utility poles, and utility companies repair them. This, it seems, is the circle of life in this industry. Typically, the most vulnerable area is the top 5 to 6 feet of the pole, exposed to birds, insects and wood rot—most unprotected poles eventually show signs of deterioration. Typically, the response is to cap the pole. And typically, the repair is treated as a non-capitalized maintenance expense. I-Corp suggests that it may be time to change the way utilities treat these vulnerable parts of the pole… and how they are treated in the books.
The Problem With Caps Metal Caps are an easy fix that might end up causing as much damage as they prevent, and they must be installed in the field, tying up crew time. Now you have moisture trapped inside a small dark space, warmed by the sun hitting the metal cap-- the perfect recipe for wood rot. Tar-based caps, historically, were much more effective than they are now, as they stuck fast and molded to the contours of the pole tops. But, existing tar-based caps are not as sticky, and don’t mold as well, leaving unprotected pockets where rot can get a foothold.

It would seem difficult to argue against the fact that pole capping fits these requirements. Pressure Relief By Mike Tourville
Pressure is a killer. Reducing pressure can be a life-saving improvement. In fact, high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often referred to as “The Silent Killer” for good reason - it’s there all the time, quietly but steadily weakening its prey until the moment of disaster occurs. Many people don’t even know they have it, because high blood pressure has no symptoms or warning signs. The same may apply to your engine’s cooling system. If you think of your coolant as the “lifeblood” of your engine, exactly how is vapor pressure affecting the “health” of your engine? The main purpose of an engine’s cooling system is to keep metal temperatures under control. Constant liquid to metal contact is critical for efficient heat transfer. The best heat transfer medium is water, which is why water-based coolants have been used to cool engines for almost 100 years. Water is also cheap and read-

ily available. Most coolants are a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol and water with corrosion inhibitors. We know that the addition of ethylene glycol substantially lowers the freezing point substantially and slightly raises the boiling point. Engines typically operate with a thin margin between the operating temperature and the boiling point of water-based coolant. By pressurizing the cooling system the boiling point is artificially raised to minimize vapor forming and avoid overheating. For every pound of pressure, the boiling of point is increased by about 3 degrees, so if you had plain water in your cooling system with a 15 pound pressure cap the water would boil at 257°F. With a 50/50 mix of EG and water the coolant would boil at approximately 265°F with a 15 pound cap. Now, if water has superior thermal conductive capabilities, what reasons would

there be to not use a water-based coolant? How well would a waterless coolant perform? When water boils, it turns to vapor. That’s when water’s performance as a heat transfer fluid drops like a cliff. Water must maintain its liquid state to be effective. Water vapor retains only 4% of the heat transfer capability of water. Put another way, when water loses 96% of its effectiveness, bad things begin to happen to an engine in a hurry. The hottest parts of the cylinder head are the likeliest locations for boiling and water vapor creation. If the surrounding liquid coolant is hotter than the boiling point of water, an insulating vapor barrier is formed between the hot cylinder head metal and the liquid coolant. The result is poor heat transfer, the metal temperature rises, and a “hot spot” forms. A cylinder head hot spot in any engine stresses
the metal, possibly causing the head to warp or crack. Afterboil is caused by water-based coolant that is at a temperature near its boiling point in an engine that has been stressed by running hard and then shut down. Heat stored in the cylinder head continues to dissipate into the coolant in the cooling jacket. Boiling occurs when the coolant temperature exceeds the boiling point of the coolant. Afterboil can be a cause of a loss of coolant from a non-leaking cooling system that has a pressurized expansion tank. Water vapor from the after-boiling displaces liquid coolant in the cylinder head, forcing the pressure high enough to open the pressure relief valve at the cap on the expansion tank. Liquid coolant is pushed out of the expansion tank and onto the ground.
the radiator becomes more efficient at dissipating heat and the cooling system gains a reserve capacity. Cooling systems are “air-side limited”, meaning that the limiting factor for a cooling system lies in its ability to remove the heat from the radiator to the ambient air. With the engine able to safely operate with elevated coolant temperatures, the radiator metal can now safely operate hotter, providing a greater temperature difference to the ambient air (the delta “T”) .
Operation of water-based engine coolant near its boiling point also creates the conditions for cavitation erosion of cylinder liners in heavy duty engines. Each piston oscillates within its cylinder liner, vibrating the liner. Locations of the liner that move away from the liquid, form low pressure areas where the coolant boils and water vapor forms. On the other half of the vibration cycle, those locations move toward the liquid, causing an increase in pressure, and the vapor condenses. The cycles repeatedly scrub

With a boiling point of 375°F, Evans waterless coolants prevent afterboil because the coolant in the cylinder head has not reached its boiling point. The coolant acts as a heat sink with the capability to absorb all residual cylinder head heat without boiling. There is no component of vapor in the system causing a pressure increase. Engines can safely tolerate higher coolant temperatures because hot engine metal is never insulated from liquid coolant by vapor. Excellent heat transfer to the coolant is maintained at all times when there is constant liquid to metal contact. In harsh operating environments, keeping water-based coolant below its boiling point stresses the radiator and fan to the limit. On a hot humid day, when dust and debris stick to the radiator like a magnet, the radiator is unable to reject heat into the ambient air. . With waterless coolant the radiator can be cleaned out less frequently which can reduce maintenance downtime. The fan is put into overtime. That’s when you’re precariously perched on the edge of that cliff, where water abruptly changes its state, from a liquid to a gas. Vapor and pressure build up quickly. And a time bomb is ticking. Overheating occurs, loss of production follows. The waterless coolant provides an inexpensive insurance against overheating and catastrophic engine failure. Put another way, cavitation erosion is caused by collapsing bubbles that cause erosion over the surface of the exterior of the cylinder liners. The resulting erosion eventually penetrates the wall of the cylinder and permits coolant to flow into the cylinder. Severe liner cavitation alone can require an engine rebuilds which can be very costly. With Evans waterless coolant cavitation erosion of cylinder liners doesn’t happen because the coolant will not boil. There is no vapor made and no vapor to condense, sharply reducing any surface scrubbing. When Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) tested Evans waterless coolant in the John Deere Cavitation Test, along with multiple water-based coolants, the results were impressive. The John Deere Engine Cavitation Test, a 250 hour dynamometer test, is highly predictive of real-world cavitation erosion of cylinder liners. When Evans Heavy Duty Coolant was tested, it proved superior to all other formulations and 70% better than the previously best water based coolant.

Honeywell now offers an application programming interface (API) program that enables development partners to build application software that interfaces with numerous Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostats including the color-customizable Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat. Honeywell is initially partnering with Akuacom, Opower, Control4, and Lutron on the API offering. The new Comfort Control API will allow additional development partners to offer creative, innovative experiences, value-add services and custom applications that integrate with Honeywell WiFi thermostats. For homeowners, the Comfort Control API means their Wi-Fi enabled Honeywell thermostats will integrate seamlessly with products and services from like-minded

companies striving to give people control over their home’s energy efficiency via smartphone, tablet or computer.
