3D Simulations – Bringing a New Dimension to Business 3DInternet believes that if seeing is believing, then experiencing is absolute. When people have the ability to actively participate in the learning process, they become not only visually engaged, but intellectually stimulated as well. This type of participation incites the cognitive process like no other. Simulations also bridge the gap between theory and handson. Next to hands-on participation, visual learning is the best direct venue in today’s training market by providing the ability to capture attention, inspire thought, and increase information retention. Studies have shown that simulations produce over 90% retention rates when compared to other training methods. That’s why the largest training organization in the world, the US Army uses simulations for most of their training requirements. 3D training simulations takes this one step further, by offering exciting and unique customized ‘learning by doing’

4

environments. This approach makes the process entirely interactive, with participants learning through their own setbacks as well as achievements. The material and information presented is learned at an accelerated pace and retention is significantly enhanced. Immersive 3D environments stimulate a greater number of senses, compared to traditional instructional methods. Simulations immerse the learner within the instructional environment. The individual is given the ability to navigate through virtual settings while learning specific job requirements and/or skills. From an industry standpoint on safety, it gives the learner the opportunity to experience the actual equipment, the worksite, potential hazards and affords them the opportunity to learn what happens while carrying out certain job tasks. Not only does this instill a greater awareness of safety on the job, but it gives the learner an added feeling of

self-confidence knowing that they’ve had the chance to become familiar with the environment and surroundings, long before actually being placed in the field. This is especially important for employees in hands-on, high-risk activities and situations where hazards resulting in injury or destruction of property are potential repercussions of mistakes. 3DInternet creates and develops simulations for many top corporations including Electrical Utilities, Oil & Gas Companies, Engineering & Construction and the Military. Applications range from simulations of equipment and machinery to Control rooms for operator training, or large scale simulations of cities for emergency preparedness and training of first responders.

A quote by Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

E-Learning – Getting ready for the New Generation of Learning Many companies now deliver training using online delivery, known as e-Learning. Instructors can incorporate classroom and field training with e-Learning, for blended learning. Blended learning combines traditional face-to-face classroom methods with computers or electronic device e-Learning activities. In the past, technology-based materials played a supporting role to face-to-face instruction. Through a blended learning approach, technology will become more important. The key to learning is the participant’s long term retention. Blended learning helps guide learners though vast amounts of information, then tests their retention level. Instructor’s notes, power point presentations and classroom tools can now be computer-based allowing instructors to focus their energy on high level training including hands-on. There are many different approaches to blended learning. It can take on many shapes or forms, depending on the teach-

ers and learners involved. One of the main considerations to creating a training course is the audience. The new generation, best described as digital natives, is very distinct from the educators, administrators, publishers and others who will be formulating their educational experience and for whom the internet has occupied but a portion of our lives, known as digital immigrants. Education and educational materials must match the expectations and skill sets of the participants for whom they are intended, and the digital natives who are now entering college expect an educational experience that mirrors their development in the age of the internet. Education and learning are incredibly complicated. When you factor in how teacher’s teach, what gets taught, what instructional materials are used , and how teachers are taught to use new techniques and technologies, the process can seem quite mind-boggling. Another factor to consider is how humans remember what they are taught. All knowledge stored in our brains is first

stored in short term memory. In order for us to remember long- term, neural net connections in the brain must be made. Connections are made by longer term activity, experience, or practice. Thus in order for us to learn long term, we must do something over and over until a neural net connection is made. This applies to So what are the benefits of e-Learning? 1. Students can work at their own pace depending on their level of understanding. 2. Flexibility for today’s diverse learners. 3. More time for lab/hands-on classroom experiences with the instructor. 4. Introduction of new technology - prepares participants for today’s workplace. 5. Easier administration for capturing knowledge assessment. 6. Consistent training message being provided to all, limiting participants from learning incorrect methods or procedures. 3DInternet is unique in creating Cinema grade graphics and animations which are

“I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.” Winston Churchill “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” Albert Einstein 3D Visualization: Making your Vision come Alive For many Engineering and Construction projects, providing the vision from an engineering or design schematic was almost impossible until 3D software became available. Being able to walk around a facility or fly-through a major infrastructure project allows companies to show their projects before it is even built.

Converting CAD geometry, plot plans and architectural drawings to a story is not an easy task. Company presidents need to get Board of Director approvals, Communication teams needs to explain projects at Open houses for community approvals, presentations need to be made at AGM and town meetings, regulatory bodies need to be convinced of environmental impacts and finally, colors of buildings and landscaping needs to be determined. 3D Visualizations help tell the story. 3DInternet has been working on some of the most expensive infrastructure projects on the planet. Companies utilizing 3DInternet’s services have saved millions of dollars on production and operation costs when discovering design flaws prior to starting construction. All because the proper people making the decisions were able to see a visualization of the entire project before a shovel even hit the dirt. After completion of a 3D visualization, many companies take advantage of utiliz-

ing the created product for marketing and later training. Now, New Hire orientations and Safety Training can be created for the project being constructed.

Making Pole-Top Damage a Capital Offense I-Corp Is Changing The Way Poles Are Capped, Treated... and Cost-Accounted? Nature destroys utility poles, and utility companies repair them. This, it seems, is the circle of life in this industry. Typically, the most vulnerable area is the top 5 to 6 feet of the pole, exposed to birds, insects and wood rot—most unprotected poles eventually show signs of deterioration. Typically, the response is to cap the pole. And typically, the repair is treated as a non-capitalized maintenance expense. I-Corp suggests that it may be time to change the way utilities treat these vulnerable parts of the pole… and how they are treated in the books.

The Problem With Caps Metal Caps are an easy fix that might end up causing as much damage as they prevent, and they must be installed in the field, tying up crew time. Now you have moisture trapped inside a small dark space, warmed by the sun hitting the metal cap-- the perfect recipe for wood rot. Tar-based caps, historically, were much more effective than they are now, as they stuck fast and molded to the contours of the pole tops. But, existing tar-based caps are not as sticky, and don’t mold as well, leaving unprotected pockets where rot can get a foothold.

Building A Better Cap I-Corp has solved all of these problems and more with one product: IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty. IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty is an asphalt-enhanced polymer putty that comes in a caulking tube-- a comprehensive woodpecker deterrent that can be applied with a putty knife. You simply spread it on as you would filler putty on drywall, so an entire crew isn’t needed to make the repair. It can also be applied on its side while in the pole pile IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty is infused with Sniff’n’Stop, I-Corp’s proprietary non-toxic, all-natural Woodpecker deterrent. So not only does it seal the pole against rot, it keeps the woodpeckers from coming anywhere near

10

the top of the pole. IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty fills all holes, grooves and grain contours, providing complete coverage of the pole. The putty can be applied to the area around the shield wire bolt as well to seal and protect. A single solution that seals the business end of the pole in its entirety AND runs the woodpeckers and other pests off, without hurting them. Unlike other caps, IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty can be applied to the pole on the ground before it is installed in the field, and time- released furfuryl alcohol in the product rejuvenates the wood’s preservatives preventing the need for repairs from day one and extending the effective life of the pole. In addition, IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty’s actives are pure essential oils—natural plant derivatives-combined in a way that woodpeckers avoid because they don’t like the smell. It won’t hurt crews, and it won’t hurt the woodpeckers.

Putting the Cap In Capitalized Some utilities argue that, unlike traditional pole caps and patches, since you’re preserving the wood and repairing damage, you are extending the life of the pole, therefor the expense of capping poles should be capitalized. IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty adds extra weight to the argument by actively preventing future woodpecker damage (some of the original test poles are still woodpecker free seventeen years later). In regards to FERC Regulations in considering the life extending nature of Wood Pole Capping as capitalizable, a few items from the IRS’s Capitalization v Repairs Audit Technique Guide, Sections 8 and 9 stand out. According to FERC, a cost can be capitalized if it (8.4.6) “Extends the useful life of the property,” and (9.1.2) “appreciably prolong(s) UOP’s economic life.”

New Construction Products • September 2013

It would seem difficult to argue against the fact that pole capping fits these requirements. If it repairs damage, seals against rot AND actively prevents future deterioration and pest damage, then there is little doubt that capping with IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty will extend the useful and economic life of utility poles. I-Corp supports those advocating for this change after talking with utility clients who feel it makes sense. According to Phil Landers, Director of R&D at I-Corp, the whole point of IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty is to save utility companies time and money. “Until now, that’s been by mitigating and eliminating Woodpecker threats. I’m neither an attorney or an accountant, but if IPOLE Asphalt-Enhanced Pole Capping Putty turns out to be as effective a tool in cost accounting as it is in pest control, then why wouldn’t we help support such a change?”

Hear That?

Yeah. Neither Do We. Got woodpecker troubles? Sniff 'N' Stop plays on a fun fact of evolutionary biology: confusion and fear of the unknown trigger primal avoidance instincts that are almost undeniable. By combining more than a dozen all-natural essential oils in ways that aren't found in nature, Sniff 'N' Stop hits those triggers every time, making woodpecker troubles a thing of the past, without poisons or harsh chemicals. Pressure Relief By Mike Tourville

Pressure is a killer. Reducing pressure can be a life-saving improvement. In fact, high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often referred to as “The Silent Killer” for good reason - it’s there all the time, quietly but steadily weakening its prey until the moment of disaster occurs. Many people don’t even know they have it, because high blood pressure has no symptoms or warning signs. The same may apply to your engine’s cooling system. If you think of your coolant as the “lifeblood” of your engine, exactly how is vapor pressure affecting the “health” of your engine? The main purpose of an engine’s cooling system is to keep metal temperatures under control. Constant liquid to metal contact is critical for efficient heat transfer. The best heat transfer medium is water, which is why water-based coolants have been used to cool engines for almost 100 years. Water is also cheap and read-

12

ily available. Most coolants are a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol and water with corrosion inhibitors. We know that the addition of ethylene glycol substantially lowers the freezing point substantially and slightly raises the boiling point. Engines typically operate with a thin margin between the operating temperature and the boiling point of water-based coolant. By pressurizing the cooling system the boiling point is artificially raised to minimize vapor forming and avoid overheating. For every pound of pressure, the boiling of point is increased by about 3 degrees, so if you had plain water in your cooling system with a 15 pound pressure cap the water would boil at 257°F. With a 50/50 mix of EG and water the coolant would boil at approximately 265°F with a 15 pound cap. Now, if water has superior thermal conductive capabilities, what reasons would

New Construction Products • September 2013

there be to not use a water-based coolant? How well would a waterless coolant perform? When water boils, it turns to vapor. That’s when water’s performance as a heat transfer fluid drops like a cliff. Water must maintain its liquid state to be effective. Water vapor retains only 4% of the heat transfer capability of water. Put another way, when water loses 96% of its effectiveness, bad things begin to happen to an engine in a hurry. The hottest parts of the cylinder head are the likeliest locations for boiling and water vapor creation. If the surrounding liquid coolant is hotter than the boiling point of water, an insulating vapor barrier is formed between the hot cylinder head metal and the liquid coolant. The result is poor heat transfer, the metal temperature rises, and a “hot spot” forms. A cylinder head hot spot in any engine stresses

the metal, possibly causing the head to warp or crack. Afterboil is caused by water-based coolant that is at a temperature near its boiling point in an engine that has been stressed by running hard and then shut down. Heat stored in the cylinder head continues to dissipate into the coolant in the cooling jacket. Boiling occurs when the coolant temperature exceeds the boiling point of the coolant. Afterboil can be a cause of a loss of coolant from a non-leaking cooling system that has a pressurized expansion tank. Water vapor from the after-boiling displaces liquid coolant in the cylinder head, forcing the pressure high enough to open the pressure relief valve at the cap on the expansion tank. Liquid coolant is pushed out of the expansion tank and onto the ground.

the radiator becomes more efficient at dissipating heat and the cooling system gains a reserve capacity. Cooling systems are “air-side limited”, meaning that the limiting factor for a cooling system lies in its ability to remove the heat from the radiator to the ambient air. With the engine able to safely operate with elevated coolant temperatures, the radiator metal can now safely operate hotter, providing a greater temperature difference to the ambient air (the delta “T”) .

Operation of water-based engine coolant near its boiling point also creates the conditions for cavitation erosion of cylinder liners in heavy duty engines. Each piston oscillates within its cylinder liner, vibrating the liner. Locations of the liner that move away from the liquid, form low pressure areas where the coolant boils and water vapor forms. On the other half of the vibration cycle, those locations move toward the liquid, causing an increase in pressure, and the vapor condenses. The cycles repeatedly scrub

Knowledge Is Your Competitive Edge

With a boiling point of 375°F, Evans waterless coolants prevent afterboil because the coolant in the cylinder head has not reached its boiling point. The coolant acts as a heat sink with the capability to absorb all residual cylinder head heat without boiling. There is no component of vapor in the system causing a pressure increase. Engines can safely tolerate higher coolant temperatures because hot engine metal is never insulated from liquid coolant by vapor. Excellent heat transfer to the coolant is maintained at all times when there is constant liquid to metal contact. In harsh operating environments, keeping water-based coolant below its boiling point stresses the radiator and fan to the limit. On a hot humid day, when dust and debris stick to the radiator like a magnet, the radiator is unable to reject heat into the ambient air. . With waterless coolant the radiator can be cleaned out less frequently which can reduce maintenance downtime. The fan is put into overtime. That’s when you’re precariously perched on the edge of that cliff, where water abruptly changes its state, from a liquid to a gas. Vapor and pressure build up quickly. And a time bomb is ticking. Overheating occurs, loss of production follows. The waterless coolant provides an inexpensive insurance against overheating and catastrophic engine failure. With higher coolant temperatures enabled by the use of Evans waterless coolant,

these sites making them vulnerable to cavitation and erosion. Put another way, cavitation erosion is caused by collapsing bubbles that cause erosion over the surface of the exterior of the cylinder liners. The resulting erosion eventually penetrates the wall of the cylinder and permits coolant to flow into the cylinder. Severe liner cavitation alone can require an engine rebuilds which can be very costly. With Evans waterless coolant cavitation erosion of cylinder liners doesn’t happen because the coolant will not boil. There is no vapor made and no vapor to condense, sharply reducing any surface scrubbing. When Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) tested Evans waterless coolant in the John Deere Cavitation Test, along with multiple water-based coolants, the results were impressive. The John Deere Engine Cavitation Test, a 250 hour dynamometer test, is highly predictive of real-world cavitation erosion of cylinder liners. When Evans Heavy Duty Coolant was tested, it proved superior to all other formulations and 70% better than the previously best water based coolant.

all times. Pump seals will also last longer because there are no abrasive additive deposits on the seals. With Evans waterless coolant, periodic coolant replacement and disposal is not necessary and supplemental Coolant Additives (SCAs) are not required. The coolant will not evaporate which means the occasional topping off can be greatly reduced. It all boils down (pun intended) to one major point: Evans waterless coolants

Water is the root cause of electrolysis and corrosion in engine cooling systems, and even the latest inhibitor technology often fails to prevent component failure. With Evans waterless coolants, endurance of the engine is improved by maintaining control of engine metal temperatures at

provide a huge separation between operating temperature and its boiling point. This means that any locally generated vapor immediately condenses into nearby liquid that is much colder than the coolant’s boiling point. There is no vapor to contend with, and a much lower system pressure relieving stress on the cooling system. Evans waterless coolant will operate at about 3 pounds of pressure vs 15 pounds. That’s not only a lot less stress on your engine’s cooling system, but a relief to your entire operation.
