50 Years of Fun

This is a special year for McCall Winter Carnival as we mark the 50th anniversary of this massive 10-day event celebrating all things winter! You may not know it, but the inspiration for Winter Carnival actually dates back to 1924 when the town created the Payette Lakes Sports Carnival to beat the winter doldrums. Events included dog and snowshoe races, ski jumping, horse ski-jouring, and a tug-o-war where the prize was a box of oranges! In addition to these events, visitors could also take an exhilarating ride across the lake ice on a motor sleigh, a standard sleigh outfitted with an airplane motor for power.

Page 5

The first Sports Carnival was attended by approximately 2,000 people, including then Idaho Governor C. Moore.

As guest lodging was limited in the 1920s in McCall, the overflow of visitors were housed by residents who opened their homes for the event. In addition, a special train with sleeper cars attached was positioned at the train station and reduced rates were offered as another form of accommodation for visitors.

Page 6

The Payette Lakes Sports Carnival lasted several years, but began to fade out as organized clubs and the development of permanent facilities such as the Little Ski Hill made sporting competitions more formal and the need for festivals to hold such competitions were not needed. The Sports Carnival eventually evolved into an “Ice Break-Up Contest. A person could purchase a ticket and enter a guess as to what day, hour, and minute the ice on Payette Lake would break up in the spring. The last contest was held in 1941 and ended as gambling became illegal.

In 1965, the McCall community rallied to bring back a winter festival to their town, motivated by a desire to promote skiing in the area.

Brundage Mountain Resort had opened a few years earlier, in 1961, and the first official Winter Carnival was held on the same weekend as the University of Idaho Ski Invitational at Brundage. Events included slalom racing, cross country skiing, ski jumping, snowshoe races and snowcat races.

The first Winter Carnival in 1965 was a two-day event that drew regional visitors to the area. Snow sculptures were an integral part of that first Winter Carnival and this popular tradition continues today.

The McCall Winter Carnival continues to grow and expand and is the 10-day festival we know today. We are excited to welcome you to share the experience and help us celebrate 50 years!

A 50 Year Tradition

Page 8

With the help of flood lights and warm refreshments, dedicated craftsman work feverishly through the night to put the final touches on their masterpieces.

What says “Welcome to Winter Carnival” better than touring all of the amazing snow sculptures throughout town? The sculptures are a signature part of the Winter Carnival festivities and we would like to invite everyone to tour the town to see what our local businesses dream up this year!

For 50 years, ice sculptures have been the backbone of the Carnival. Each sculpture is the culmination of thousands of hours of work by teams of coworkers, family members and committed volunteers. A sculpture map is located on page 12.

And don’t miss the Idaho State Snow Sculpting Championships in Depot Park starting midweek of Carnival. Artists from all over the West will come to McCall to participate in the Annual Idaho Snow Sculpting Championship. This competition has an outstanding reputation for providing the opportunity for artists to create sculptures in a scale much larger than would be possible in any other medium. The artistic experience and the camaraderie with fellow artists makes this competition a truly fun and rewarding artistic experience. Location of the event will be downtown with the lake and Brundage Mountain as a back drop.

MARDIS GRAS PARADE

The Mardi Gras Parade is the largest spectator event at the McCall Winter Carnival.

The parade actually started as the “Grand Parade” in the 1970’s, but over time, dwindling attendance and a lack of interest from the community to get involved threatened to phase out this event. Before that could happen, however, Lisa Whisnant and a team of vol-

unteers resurrected the “Grand Parade” and initiated the Mardi Gras theme in the 1990’s. Since that time, the parade has continued to grow and thrive and the Mardi Gras theme stuck. It has been the official theme for the parade each and every year. The Mardi Gras Parade takes place, Saturday, January 31st in downtown. Arrive early for the best viewing!

WINTER CARNIVAL FOR A CAUSE

Did you know that while your family is enjoying events at Winter Carnival, you are also helping to give back to the surrounding community? Many of the signature events at the McCall Winter Carnival are hosted by and raise money to support local non-profits.

The Chocolate and Spirits Tasting benefits the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation. This hard-working group of volunteers provides scholarships and grant money to enhance and promote public education in the area. Since the Foundation’s inception in 2006, over $290,000 in grant money has been distributed to educational projects.

Sharlie’s Plunge raises money for the MYST Mentoring Program which works to connect teens with responsible, caring adults to build positive mentoring relationships. In addition, MYST also funds the Yellow Couch Teen Center, a safe place for youth to interact socially with peers and adult mentors.

The Monster Dog Pull is an annual fundraiser for the MCPAWS Regional Animal Shelter. In 2014, the Shelter was able to find homes for 116 dogs and 179 cats while reuniting 123 lost dogs and 8 cats to their owners.
