When children can count objects in a set, they put more objects into their sets and count again. They don’t realize that this process is addition. We clarify the steps, but the process is natural.

Grouping: Small group

English Language Learners: When children count Tag Bags in the activity, make a circle motion around each color group of Tag Bags as you repeat the numbers. Three blue. Two orange. Motion again around the entire line of Tag Bags. All.

Objective

Children combine sets of objects to find out the total by counting.

Activity

How many do we have in all? Let’s count to find out. 1. Invite two children to sit with you, one on each side. Others will watch and count with you. 2. Give the child on your right some blue Tag Bags. Count them aloud as a class. Have him repeat the total. Give him the corresponding number card. 3. Give the child on your left some orange Tag Bags. Count them aloud as a class. Have her repeat the total. Give her the corresponding number card. 4. How many in all? The first child places Tag Bags in a line, counting aloud. The second child adds Tag Bags to the row, counting on and continuing to count from where she first left off.

Mat ManÂŽ to the Rescue It's the first day of school!

Uh-Oh! The handwriting bandit, The Reverser, has reversed the letters on River Hill Elementary School's marquee board! How will students know they're at the right school on the first day of the year?

Mat Man to the rescue! Mat Man got out his Stamp and See ScreenÂŽ from his handwriting tool kit to correct the letter reversals by starting at the smiley face.

Mwahahaha Mat Man fixed the sign with his Stamp and See Screen, but The Reverser was lurking in the shadows waiting to steal the letters!

Then, The Reverser tried to steal the letters, but he has poor grip, so he dropped them on his toes!

The Reverser had to go home and ice his toe... Mat Man saved the day and everyone had a good first day of school!
