Describe Problem and Solution
“Little Miss Muffet”
Children understand that when they have a problem, they want to work it out. When they find a solution, they feel better. Many stories contain some type of problem for the characters to solve. Children learn that just as they feel better when their problems are solved, stories feel complete when the character’s problem is solved.

Objective
Children describe the problem and solution of a story.

Let’s talk about problems and solutions. 1. Have you ever lost a favorite toy? Have you ever broken something? These could be problems. How could we solve these problems? Invite children to share examples. 2. A story can have a problem and a solution. Listen to this story about Little Miss Muffet. Read the Story Cards one at a time. Place them in the Line It Up Bar.

word spider several times.
4. How did she fix it? 5. What would you do if a spider came and sat beside you? Have children share their creative solutions to Miss Muffet’s problem.
Check for Understanding Read another nursery rhyme with a problem and solution. Are children able to identify the problem and solution?
Support: Present different problem situations. If it snows happens, then what should you do? Have props available. If you are going outside and it’s raining, then what should you do? (You should use an umbrella.) If there is trash on the floor, then what should you do? (You should put it in the trash can.) If you are thirsty, then what should you do? (You should drink water.)

all colors
Shapes can be hard to match when they are oriented differently. A simple turn or flip reveals the match. Turns rotate the piece into place. Flips turn the shape over to show its mirror image. Puzzles are a good way to explore orientation. Children move pieces to match the shape left on the puzzle.
– 2" x 3" Pattern Boards (1 per pair)
Objective
Children turn and flip shapes to build a puzzle.
Activity
Let’s build a puzzle. You’ll find the Big Piece that goes on your puzzle. 1. Place a 2" x 3" Pattern Board in front of each pair with the puzzle side up. Assign one partner to Little Pieces and one to Big Pieces.
Grouping: Pairs English Language Learners: Practice puzzle moves on the carpet before the activity. Demonstrate slide (sit and scoot forward), turn (sit and spin), and flip (lie flat on back and roll over). Have children join you.
2. Look at your board. The shapes are outlined. Put two Little Pieces on the puzzle. 3. Look at the space that is left. Which Big Piece will fit on your puzzle? Have the other partner choose a shape and try it on the board. If a pair of children is struggling to make a shape fit, suggest a turn or flip and demonstrate. 4. Have children tell you about their puzzle. How did you move your Big Piece to make it fit? How many Little Pieces did you use? Big Pieces? 5. Give each pair a new board. Have partners switch roles.
Check for Understanding Observe children as they build the puzzle. Can they choose the piece that will fit? Can they do this even if the piece is in a different orientation than the space on the puzzle?
Support: Use only the red and yellow Big Pieces and their corresponding puzzles.
