Keyboarding Without Tears™

This developmentally-based curriculum for pre-keyboarding and touch typing in grades K–5 is the perfect complement to your school’s handwriting curriculum. The research is clear: handwriting is the primary way children produce written work in elementary school. A 2013 study of K–5 classrooms showed that students spend the greatest part of their classroom instruction time (24 to 58 percent) on handwriting-based activities. We believe in teaching children all the skills they need to succeed in school, and in life. In today’s classroom, children spend 15 to 22 percent of their instruction time on technology-based activities, including keyboarding. Most are also expected to produce work on a keyboard by the end of fourth grade. Developmental Sequence of Written Production Printing

Tip from the Pre-K Readiness & Writing Workshop Are you modeling correctly? When you model letter formations, students see the arm movements that go into making a letter. They associate those movements with the letter, reinforcing good habits. Model with big arm movements using Digital Teaching Tools, p. 34. 301.263.2700 5

Are You My Match?

Move Shapes to Match

Are Y ou My Match?

Materials/Setup: • Mix & Make Shapes – Circles – 1 large,

Match Shapes of Dif ferent Sizes

a few small*

Shapes can be similar even when they are different sizes. A shape with three sides and three corners is a triangle no matter what size it is. Your children are ready to learn this by matching shapes of different sizes. This activity helps them learn the characteristics to notice (sides and corners) and the characteristics to ignore (size and color) when they sort by shape.

– Triangles – 1 large, a few small* – Rectangles – 1 large, a few small* *each child needs one small shape

Grouping: Small group or whole class

English Language Learners: Practice the pattern of question and answer with this activity. Model how to rephrase the question into an answer. Are you my shape? No, you are not my shape.

Objective

Children find similar shapes of different sizes.

Activity

The little shapes want to find something big that is the same shape. Can you help? 1. Ask three students to stand in a line. Give each child a big shape. 2. Hand out small shapes to the other children in the group. Keep a rectangle for yourself. 3. Show how to check for a match. Are you my shape? No! My shape has four corners. Your shape doesn’t have corners. Continue until you find the big rectangle. 4. Give each child a chance to find a big shape of the same kind. Encourage them to talk about why their shapes are the same or different.

Check for Understanding Post the big shapes in different corners of the room. Give children a small shape. Ask them to move to the big shape that matches their shape. Are they able to make a match?

Support: Start with the circle and triangle. Talk about corners and sides to explain why shapes match.

Tip from the K–5 Handwriting Workshop

Make sure you reward good habits. Recognizing improvements, no matter how small, is important. If a child is struggling with the formation of capital B, but remembers to start at the top, make sure you point out what they are doing right, first. Then correct the formation. 301.263.2700 23

Tip from the K–5 Handwriting Workshop Immediately improve math scores by focusing on number reversals. Concentrate on one number at a time. Circle the lowest reversed number on any math paper and help the child correct that number before moving to the next. Children won’t be overwhelmed this way. 24
