Keyboarding Without Tears™ We are proud to offer a uniquely effective, game-based curriculum for pre-keyboarding and keyboarding in grades K–5! This developmentally appropriate curriculum is the perfect complement to your school’s handwriting curriculum. The research is clear: handwriting is the primary way children produce written work in elementary school. A 2013 study* of K–5 classrooms showed that students spend the greatest part of their classroom instruction time (24 to 58 percent) on handwriting-based activities. In today’s classroom, children spend 15 to 22 percent of their instruction time on technology-based activities, including keyboarding. Most are also expected to produce work on a keyboard by the end of fourth grade. Many must also meet requirements for today’s computer-based testing. Activity
“Ready for Robins”
When children can identify the sequence of beginning, middle, and end, they can better comprehend the story and make sense of what they have heard or read. This understanding enables them to organize their memories and retell stories.
Try to remember what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of our story.
Grouping: Small group; Whole class
1. Read “Ready for Robins.”
English Language Learners: Help children understand beginning, middle, and end. Have three children line up. Point out who is at the ™
™
™
beginning, middle, and end. You can also line up other classroom items and point out the beginning, middle, and end of each line.
2. Have children pretend to be young robins. I will be your robin parent. Here is our nice warm nest. Pretend you are my small blue eggs. Roll into a small egg. You can’t see. You don’t have feathers. You are very hungry. Now, break out of your shell. Here are some yummy worms. Open wide! You get stronger. You can see and grow feathers. Now, try your wings out and fly. Beautiful! 3. Place Story Cards in the Line It Up Bar out of order. Re-read words for the first card. Show me what happens first. Please put it up. 4. Re-read the words for the second card. Show me the picture of what happens next. Please put it next to the first card. 5. Re-read the words for the third card. Show me the picture of what happens last. Please put it next to the second card. 6. Now we know the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
Check for Understanding Observe as children retell the story. Can they identify the beginning, middle and end? Can they sequence the story?
Support: Show a real banana. I am going to share this banana. What should I do first? (Peel.) And next? (Slice, share, and eat.) And next? (Throw away the peel.)
