Welcome… Welcome to the Get Set for School® Pre-K readiness curriculum. Pre-K is such a crucial time for children as they develop skills ranging from behavioral to physical, to language and numbers. So we have expanded our award-winning Readiness & Writing Pre-K Teacher’s Guide (page 6) to give you even more resources and teaching tools that support the Pre-K activity book, My First School Book (page 7) and prepare young learners for kindergarten. Our Pre-K Color Wall Cards are new too. These work well with our Pre-K materials to expose children to letters and numbers with vivid colors and animal images. Also, be sure to take advantage of our new Pre-K assessments (page 2) as an informal way to see which skills your children have mastered and where they may need some help or additional time developing a skill. We hope you’ll enjoy sharing these exciting new materials and strategies with children and their families.
P.S. Don’t forget training! Attend one of our Pre-K workshops (pages 22-25) or webinars and walk away with fresh ideas and classroom materials you can use right away.

Our three core learning areas: At Get Set for School®, we believe that all children can achieve. Our curriculum is made of three core programs to prepare young learners for school: Readiness & Writing With our Readiness & Writing program, young learners will: • Develop language skills to name and talk about things and express needs. • Develop crayon skills for drawing, coloring, and writing. • Recognize and write all capitals and write name. • Recognize and form numbers 1-10, count body parts, and objects.
Language & Literacy Our hands-on approach brings language and literacy to life as students: • Identify and recognize syllables and sounds of letters. • Link words to concepts and recognize new words in spoken language. • Respond to simple questions, have discussions, and share ideas.
Numbers & Math We demystify numbers so that children will delight as they learn to: • Count, sequence, and match objects. • Compare, build patterns, and sort by colors, shapes, and object types. • Understand spatial concepts and solve problems.
Our three programs are flexible and complete, so they can stand alone or supplement any Pre-K program already in use. Browse through these pages and our website to discover exciting activities and products.

Three-year-olds can make a circle before they can make a cross. For four-year-olds, we use the cross to prepare them to write letters with vertical and horizontal strokes. Teach the vertical from top to bottom and the cross from left to right.

This is a shape page. This shape is a cross.
Look and Learn
Let’s find Ls on this page. Look. There’s a lizard. Lizard starts with L. Is a lizard an animal or a person? Where do lizards live? What do lizards have?
Look at the pictures and name them together: cross, window, scarecrow, kite, cross. Then say together: This is a cross. The window has a cross; the scarecrow has a cross, etc. This strategy helps children learn words and left-to-right reading. The window has something else—a lizard.
Color and Draw
Trace, Color, and Draw Crosses
Trace and Write L
Let’s color the lizard. Show pictures. Lizards can be any color. They can have spots or stripes. Draw rocks or grass for the lizard too. Demonstrate. The lizard needs a tongue!
Demonstrate how to draw a cross: Little line down, little line across. Trace the first cross together. Children put their crayons on the arrow, little line down, little line across. Children trace, color, and draw as they like.

“Little Miss Muffet”
Children understand that when they have a problem, they want to work it out. When they find a solution, they feel better. Many stories contain some type of problem for the characters to solve. Children learn that just as they feel better when their problems are solved, stories feel complete when the character’s problem is solved.

Recognize Shapes in a Group
Pre-K Teacher’s Guide
When children can name shapes in isolation, they are ready to name shapes within a group. This skill requires them to recall the name and characteristic of each shape. Children must also sort that information in their minds when they look at all the shapes.
– 4 Large triangles – 4 Large rectangles – 4 Large squares
Grouping: Small group (4)
English Language Learners: Preview the actions before starting the activity. Model and say the name of the movement: jump, hop, hold up your hand, tickle, sit. Children can repeat the name and imitate your movements.
Objective
Children recognize circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares within a group.
Activit y
Let’s play Simon Says. Simon will tell you what to do with the shapes. 1. Spread the shapes on the ground. I will be Simon first. I’ll tell you what to do. 2. Give directions. Simon says: - Jump to a triangle. - Put your hand on a square. - Tickle a circle. - Sit on a shape with four sides. 3. When they understand the activity, let a child be Simon. Play along and help if the group gets stuck. 4. Don’t try to trick the children until they can play without mistakes. Then give a direction without saying Simon says.
Check for Understanding Have children clean up the pieces. Ask each to pick up a different shape. Do they select the right shapes?

This is a shape page. This shape is a cross.
Let’s find Ls on this page. Look. There’s a lizard. Lizard starts with L. Is a lizard an animal or a person? Where do lizards live? What do lizards have?
Look and Learn
Look at the pictures and name them together: cross, window, scarecrow, kite, cross. Then say together: This is a cross. The window has a cross; the scarecrow has a cross, etc. This strategy helps children learn words and left-to-right reading. The window has something else—a lizard.
Color and Draw
Let’s color the lizard. Show pictures. Lizards can be any color. They can have spots or stripes. Draw rocks or grass for the lizard too. Demonstrate. The lizard needs a tongue!
Trace, Color, and Draw Crosses
Trace and Write L
Demonstrate how to draw a cross: Little line down, little line across. Trace the first cross together. Children put their crayons on the arrow, little line down, little line across. Children trace, color, and draw as they like.
Coloring, Drawing, Counting, Writing, and School Readiness
Finger trace the L at the top of the page. (Say directions.) Let’s write L. Put the crayon on the
