Teaching Order Our unique teaching order groups letters together in an easy-to-teach, easy-to-learn sequence that makes it simple for children to build on the skills they have already learned. Continuous, Meaningful Practice Children retain skills better if they have continuous, meaningful review. That’s why each letter is used in words and sentences with previously learned letters for review and practice. Flexible and Customizable Options We offer differentiated teaching strategies and flexible lessons to meet children where they are developmentally. Multisensory, Hands-On Materials Our hands-on materials support differentiated learning with multisensory options like HTT (The Handwriting nteractive Teaching Tool™). Plus, we use manipulatives that engage the senses like the Slate Chalkboard, Flip Crayons®, Tag Bags®, and Build a Keyboard activity board. Free Resources Visit LWTears.com to discover free downloads, assessments, research, how-tos, and other resources to energize your teaching.

Three-year-olds can make a circle before they can make a cross. For four-year-olds, we use the cross to prepare them to write letters with vertical Teach C OWand horizontal B O OTstrokes. F I S H the vertical C ATfrom topDto UCK bottom and the cross from left to right.
This is the L page. L is a letter. Do you know: L words? L names? L sounds? Have you ever seen a lizard?
Activity
Look and Learn
This is a shape page. This shape is a cross.
Let’s find Ls on this page. Look. There’s a lizard. Lizard starts with L. Is a lizard an animal or a person? Where do lizards live? What do lizards have?
Look and Learn
Look at the pictures and name them together: cross, window, scarecrow, kite, cross. Then say together: This is a cross. The window has a cross; the scarecrow has a cross, etc. This strategy helps children learn words and left-to-right reading. The window has something else—a lizard.

Trace, Color, and Draw Crosses

“Ready for Robins”
When children can identify the sequence of beginning, middle, and end, they can better comprehend the story and make sense of what they have heard or read. This understanding enables them to organize their memories and retell stories.
Grouping: Small group; Whole class
English Language Learners: Help children understand beginning, middle, and end. Have three children line up. Point out who is at the ™

beginning, middle, and end. You can also line up other classroom items and point out the beginning, middle, and end of each line.
Objective
Children identify the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
Activity
Try to remember what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of our story. 1. Read “Ready for Robins.” 2. Have children pretend to be young robins. I will be your robin parent. Here is our nice warm nest. Pretend you are my small blue eggs. Roll into a small egg. You can’t see. You don’t have feathers. You are very hungry. Now, break out of your shell. Here are some yummy worms. Open wide! You get stronger. You can see and grow feathers. Now, try your wings out and fly. Beautiful! 3. Place Story Cards in the Line It Up Bar out of order. Re-read words for the first card. Show me what happens first. Please put it up. 4. Re-read the words for the second card. Show me the picture of what happens next. Please put it next to the first card. 5. Re-read the words for the third card. Show me the picture of what happens last. Please put it next to the second card. 6. Now we know the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
Hands-On
Check for Understanding Observe as children retell the story. Can they identify the beginning, middle and end? Can they sequence the story?
Support: Show a real banana. I am going to share this banana. What should I do first? (Peel.) And next? (Slice, share, and eat.) And next? (Throw away the peel.)

When children can count objects in a set, they put more objects into their sets and count again. They don’t realize that this process is addition. We clarify the steps, but the process is natural.
Cards 1–5
Grouping: Small group
English Language Learners: When children count Tag Bags in the activity, make a circle motion around each color group of Tag Bags as you repeat the numbers. Three blue. Two orange. Motion again around the entire line of Tag Bags. All.
Objective
Children combine sets of objects to find out the total by counting.
Activity
How many do we have in all? Let’s count to find out. 1. Invite two children to sit with you, one on each side. Others will watch and count with you. 2. Give the child on your right some blue Tag Bags. Count them aloud as a class. Have him repeat the total. Give him the corresponding number card. 3. Give the child on your left some orange Tag Bags. Count them aloud as a class. Have her repeat the total. Give her the corresponding number card. 4. How many in all? The first child places Tag Bags in a line, counting aloud. The second child adds Tag Bags to the row, counting on and continuing to count from where she first left off.
Count all of the Tag Bags.
