Long vowel e, /ē/ Chant It!
Say: I see a bee! Beeee! Fly with me. Act out: Make an arm movement of flying like a bee. Encourage students to join in. Model: Change the chant for spellings appropriate to the lesson and group. Have students repeat. • 1st use: /ē/ spelled e. • 2nd use: /ē/ spelled e–consonant–e. • 3rd use: /ē/ spelled ee and ea. Also, ey. • 4th use: /ē/ spelled y. • 5th use: /ē/ spelled ie.
Break It and Blend It!
Say: T here are two sounds in bee: /b/ - /ē/. Now let’s blend the sounds together: bee.
Say It in a Sentence!
Give context. Choose a sentence that matches the skills and interests of your group. Write it, and underline the long e words. Read it to students, and ask them to clap for each long e word. Have them repeat it back to you, chorally. • A bee can be yellow. • A bee lands on a tree by the sea. • A bee stings a monkey. Eek! • A bee soars to a field of flowers. • A tiny bee is hard to see.
