LED Lights LED Lights come in a range of shapes, sizes, brightness and colour. This versatility has enabled LED Lights to be used in strips and bars, in cars and trucks, in boats, on landscapes, in households, as accent lights, as industrial lights, in torches and in electronics (for instance LED televisions). Think of LED Lights as digital devices in contrast to the traditional incandescent lights which are firmly analogue devices. Like anything digital these days, there is a vast improvement on its analogue predecessor and in the case of the LED Lights they are cost of usage (not necessarily purchase although these are coming down all the time) and longevity so that the overall cost of using an LED light is considerably lower than the incandescent light and even greener and widespread Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL).

An LED Lamp

So what exactly is an LED light? LED stands for Light Emitting Diode which is a semiconductor mounted on a circuit board and this form of light production is also known as Solid-State Lighting (SSL). Newer forms of SSL lighting use alternative diodes, for instance, Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED) and Polymer Light-Emitting Diode (PLED) but at the time of writing this article, LED remains widely available and the most popular. An LED is a semiconductor light source which is when a semiconductor material starts emitting light on application of an electric current through it. Unlike the traditional incandescent lamp that “wastes a lot of electrical energy passing through it as heat instead of light, an LED lamp in contrast converts vast majority of electric energy into light instead of heat which makes LED Lights highly efficient lighting devices.

An Incadescent Lamp

Unlike early LED Lights which produced only low intensity red light, the LED Lights available today come in all colors of the rainbow (the visible spectrum) in addition to ultraviolet and infrared spectrums. As a point of interest,

infrared LED is used in television remote control devices. Since brightness or luminescence is no longer an issue with LED Lights over the traditional incandescent lights there are other significant advantages of LED Lights even over popular and greener CFLs which need to be highlighted. These important advantages of LEDs are: lower electricity usage; improved longetivity; tougher and more resistant to breakage; compact; faster response when switched on.

LED Lights Are The Future

LED Lights are therefore the way of the future and especially since the cost of production and therefore retail is continually coming down which still remains the main disadvantage over incandescent and CF lights. Other challenges with LED Lights are technical abd include the efficient projection of photons from the LED circuit to the outside which has been overcome with the usage of optics within the lamp. The other challenge with LED Lights which impacts on its efficiency and logevity has been the regulation of current through it and the heat out of it. LED lamps have in built circuits to regulate current and voltage and heat sinks outside of the lamps to dissipate heat quickly efficiently since higher currents and temperatures impact negatively on the life and efficiency of LED Lights.

How An LED Works

As the name suggests, a semiconductor is a material which is half-way between a conductor such as a metal and an insulator such as glass and they have been designed that way for many good reasons in the field of electronics. An LED semiconductor is carefully doped with impurities to create positively charged entities called holes which are directly opposite to the negatively charged entities already present in the semiconductor- the electrons. In the resulting semiconductor material, the diode, positive and negative junctions, the so-called p-n junctions, are formed in multiple places throughout the semiconductor. When current is applied to the semiconductor, it flows easily from a p-side (the anode) to the n-side (the cathode) and at the p-n junctions, electrons fall into the holes and in the process release photon energy. The length of fall of the electron determines the wavelength and therefore the color of photon released. The electroluminescent semiconductor, the LED, can therefore be made to emit any colour of light by adding the appropriate doping agent.

Inner Workings Of An LED

The environmental and economic reasons of using LED Lights are compelling if not conclusive. As the environment increasingly comes to the fore in people’s mind due largely to severe weather events being played out on television news almost everyday, combined with regular and inexorable increases in energy bills in difficult economic times, the prospect of utilizing LED Lights at home and in business becomes more of a reality in peoples’ thoughts. As it were, they would be killing two birds with one stone: helping the environment by reducing carbon emissions and saving money for themselves in the long run. Even compared with the increasingly common CFLs, which are better in terms of carbon footprint and longevity than the incandescent lamps, LED Lamps are still more attractive both in terms of reduced carbon emissions and money savings. Furthermore, LED Lamps are even more environmentally friendly since unlike the CFLs, they do not use mercury. Many websites have comparison tables in which incandescent lamp is compared with LED lamp or even a CFL. In all those tables that I’ve seen, the LED Lights come out tops in the economy and longevity departments despite the initial cost of purchase being higher. One such table produced by Phillips, the giant consumer electronics company, is shown below.

LED Wins!

Over time, the savings produced by utilizing LED Lights adds up considerably. If you shop around, you may find great discounts on LED Lights so that your initial outlay is as low as it could be. LED Lights are clearly gaining momentum and such energy saving measures are not only significantly economical for the user but are vital for the planet we live in since savings in carbon emissions made in the developed countries can offset increased carbon emissions in the developing world. To your success!
