Pecha Kucha is a quick presentation format of 20 images for 20 seconds each. My topic is about the True Cost of Fast Fashion which was inspired by a documentary of the same title. The texts has been labelled under each image.
THE TRUE COST OF FAST FASHION
THE NEED TO SHOP, SHOP, SHOP TILL YOU DROP!
I volunteered to speak on this topic to create awareness about the implications of fast fashion to the people and environment .
WHAT IS FAST FASHION ?
I will be talking about the true cost of fast fashion. What it is, its impact to the environment, and ways to reduce our fashion environmental impact at a microscale.
About 20 years ago, clothes have became cheaper, the increasing speed of trend cycles, and shopping became a hobby. Enter fast fashion that has now dominate our high streets and online shopping.
Zara, H&M, Adidas and Mango are a few examples of fast fashion brands of today that are considered cheap with new collections updated every season.
So what is fast fashion? It is defined as trendy items inspired by runway looks and celebrity styles and that are massproduced and made at a low cost.

HOW DOES
BECOME SO EFFICIENT THAN OTHER BRANDS?
Its important to understand how brands speed up their new collection every season. ZARA adopts the Lean Business Model where the objective is to eliminate waste and inconsistencies in the production process.
The finished products from the manufacturing factory arrive in store within 15 days without going through the warehouse. Therefore, ZARA can respond to its customer demand by producing more of its popular items and disregarding lesser ones.
That is how ZARA accelerate its production process. But again, why is it so cheap? Although retailers hire local staff, they outsource cheap labor from overseas such as Pakistan, China, Bangladesh and etc by paying low wages.
THE
PRICE OF CLOTHES HAVE GONE FOR THE LAST FEW DECADES BUT AT WHAT COSTS ?
And it comes at a cost. Fashion retailers and companies are unaware of the inhumane working conditions and ignoring its impact to the environment such as pollution .
17
ZARA’S SUCCESS STORY.
ZARA
WHY IS IT SO CHEAP ?

Fast fashion companies tend to outsourced cheap labors in factories located overseas. Garment workers have to work in dangerous environments for low wages and without fundamental human rights.
1,135 KILLED DUE TO THE BUILDING COLLAPSED.
10
The news brought global attention and worldwide protests. In 2013, the building collapsed due to structural cracks. It housed five garment factories that made clothes for major brands such as H&M, GAP and etc. Labels and tags of the brands were found in the rubbles.
11
Fast fashion causes water pollution. Textile dyeing is one of the most polluting aspects of the global fashion industry, devastating the environment and posing health hazards to humans.
12
Large amounts of water and chemicals are also used during dyeing, to ensure vivid colors bind to the fabric and don’t fade or wash out. These waste chemicals are then dumped into rivers.

Cotton is one of the most frequently used materials and among the most pesticideintensive crops. Cotton farmers do not wear protective equipments so they are exposed to the toxic chemicals which resulted in skin ailments.
14
Textile waste is a serious problem. 85% of textiles are dumped into the landfills or burned in the US alone. It takes more than 200 years for it to decompose which can cause soil pollution.
15
Clearly, fast fashion has a negative impact on the planet. As an individual, what are the ways to fix fashion’s waste problems? One method would be is to reduce your consumption but other ways you can do are:
16
Shop from sustainable and ethical fashion brands by doing research and checking the labels. Buying fair trade from brands that practices it protects the workers’ rights and the environment.
19
COTTON FARMERS ARE EXPOSED TO THE TOXIC CHEMICALS

RECYCLE & REPURPOSE MATERIALS.
ZERO- WASTE SEWING METHOD.
17
Recycle and repurpose materials. Adidas has launched a recycled plastic running shoes from littered plastic bottles. In 2021, the brand is releasing a 100% recyclable shoe called the Futurecraft Loop. This shoe can be returned and broken down to create a brand-new pair.
18
Zero- waste sewing method. The Malaysia-born designer, Yeohlee Teng has been incorporating sustainable practices widely known for her signature “zerowaste” philosophy, meaning no scraps of fabric go unused.
DONATE CLOTHES TO RECYCLING BINS.
LESS. BUY BETTER. DON’T BE A MINDLESS CONSUMER.
19
Donate clothes to recycling bins. H&M has launched a garment collecting box by encouraging customers to donate any clothes and receive a voucher. Another option would be thrifting!
20
To conclude my presentation, don’t be a mindless consumer and be a conscious consumer by following these easy steps to create a positive change to the planet.
