BEYOND THE INTUITION Chung-Ping Lai & Ming-Hong Yeh Initial thinking

Designers around the world are creating new aesthetics,

behaviours, messages, material applications, sustainability, debates, strategies and services. How to find the innovative inspiration? In our experiences, appropriate solutions might come from clear sequences of definition and observation with the relatively small proportion of black box operation.

In the other project "Innate Vase," we found a bottle with a flower inside. The difference between a bottle and a vase is the main factor which can lead us to get the new insight of this usage. Major factors

Interesting information

Understanding and arranging

We usually arrange the major factors to create a brief and

logical thinking as a possible scenario. If we clarify the details of scenario, we will do real observation to confirm and compare with the hypothetical situation. By the process of understanding the real situation, design background and our design motivation will be obivious.

Design motivation

Major group factors Doing real observation

In the project named "Fundamental Information," we intended

to design a product or an idea about "Application of Light." As a result, we discussed several elements such as the form and function of light, various places and potential users. Without design restriction, we identified a group of certain elements. Those elements might have apparent cause-and-effect relationship.

Dependency relationship our intention to build up an new concept from the old.

01

INNATE VASE

Innate Vase The fundamental function of PET bottles is to hold water. combines the originalities of the two. Without changing the look of the original PET bottle, we give it a brand new life— A “classical” new vase.

02

INNATE VASE

Initial idea For the PET bottle, the bottle top is as essential as the vase neck for a typical vase. the dependency relationship between the upper part and the lower part can exactly make the top be reaplaced by the vase neck due to the lower part, which is the body of the bottle, is for containing the liquid.

03

INNATE VASE

Tightening up the bottlenecks with the help of their threads, we can combine the PET bottle and the Innate Vase. And the funnel shape of Innate Vase makes it easier for people to add water into the vase. 04

BLOCK MOLD

Block Mold “Block Mold” is a simple mold for making building block. Using the cost-free recycling paper pulp, children can make paper building blocks with parents by their imagination. Using paper pulp as the material, you can make as many blocks you want with “Block Mold”. The children can happily make their own building blocks which are free and valuable, it can also train their creativities. Aside from the compositional and functional solves the problem of excessive plastic toy wastes and being eco-unfriendly.

06

BLOCK MOLD

Initial idea Parents might spend less time to interact with their children. Instead, they give their children toys. But the most important thing for children is to learn and to play toys with their parents. How to have a better interaction with your children? No matter the learning between each other or the discovery of new things will in this way become more meaningful. Educational toys such as legos and building blocks are the most commonly purchased toys in many families. Indeed, it is necessary to purchase a considerable amount of building blocks in order to money on purchase to satisfy the need of their children. In this project, we propose an innovative way of paper pulp recycling to build their dream legos with less expense.

07

BLOCK MOLD

Prototyping Fron the initial idea, we move to the testing by using the common ice mold and to estimate the feasibility of our original concept.

08

BLOCK MOLD

A game for children to play together At school,“BLOCK MOLD” creates more interesting ways for teaching and playing for the teachers and the students. What’s more, through the process of making paper block, children can cooperate with one another and encourage more ideas to make their own dream block.

Better interaction of family With “BLOCK MOLD”, parents can have more interaction with their children. Moreover, the children can use their imagination to build their own block with their parents.

Eat Clean People often feel uncomfortable about using cutlery which has been in contact with the table top. 'Eat Clean' presents an elegant solution to this problem by combining the contact with the mouth will be kept away from the table top whichever way round the cutlery is placed. And can add more pleasure at eating time.

For being balance, the material of the end part is replaced by other heavier material.

Hint behind the scene The fundamental problems in people's life are usually hidden in daily life. The way to discover these information is to partially manage the intuition in our brain.

Fundamental information Rushing into the movie theater, you forgot to take a look at the seat number beforehand, under the faint light, the words on the ticket seems to hide from you. This is when Fundamental Information comes in handy. Punching seat numbers onto the tickets, the light beam goes through the paper and shows us the seat number. Even if we are sitting somewhere dark, with the help of the screen, we can still see the information we need on the ticket.

Restore health “Restore Health”, by means of estabilishing exercise habit and eliminating longtimeworking tenseness. By combining the activity of stretching body and the function of electric power generation by human pulling, “Restore Health” acts as a reminder for people at work. People can be reminded to use “Restore Health” and do some stretching exercise for a rest every 45 minutes. In the meantime, the battery inside the “Restore Health” is recharged by the action of human pulling for the next 45 minutes illumination. It allows people to maintain a better reading or working habit, and our

Trace In Taiwan’s tradition, we can usually hear that someone says” do not sit on the chair which was warm by someone else a couple of minutes ago”. Chinese believe that is not hygienic and comfortable when you sit on it. Except telling the concept of hygiene, it also makes a connection with the people who had been sitting on the chair. “Traces” is a bench with the capacity of visualizing the invisible, such as temperature and the ex-users. The intention is to remind the latter one the temperature and imprint on the seat by the recovery status of inert foam. When the inert foam returns to its original shape, it implies that the temperature of the seat is normal and ready to serve its function again, and vice versa.

CLIP-ON GADGETS

Clip-on Gadgets Touch is an important sense for interaction, but current multi-touch devices commonly use virtual keys that lack tactile feedback. For example, many games use virtual D-pad and virtual buttons as controllers, overlaid on top of (and obscuring) the screen. Clip-on Gadgets enable physical controllers to be used with these devices, without requiring wiring, battery, or wireless connections. User simply clip a physical controller to an edge of the device and start interacting with it.

26

CLIP-ON GADGETS

Initial idea Real feedback is particular essential when people need to interact with the technology. Although there is visual feedback, it is not enough for people to use directly in certain time such as playing games and typing.

The idea is to enable physical controllers to be used with the device without physical cotroller.

RELIEF LIGHT

Relief Light RELIEF LIGHT is a combination of an emergency light and a household lamp. Normally, emergency lights are only used when needed, that is to say, they often remain idle. RELIEF LIGHT changes this situation by designing it into a household lamp. When the plug is connected, the micro electric is saved for the use of the batteries. This utilizes

When experiencing an electric power cut, RELIEF LIGHT automatically turns on. User can immediately separate

Angled Ruler While measuring with a ruler, we usually need to aim the start point of the ruler at the thing you want to measure, so we improve the ruler by combining the “L shape hook from the tape measure. Therefore, the angled ruler is created. It can easy to aim the start point of the ruler at the thing, and help you measuring.

Think by inner child In childhood, the best time to blow bubbles is when taking a bath.

35

SPONGE BUBBLE

The Difficulty When You Help Your Children Enjoy Their Bath Time Children can not take a bath themselves. They need the aid from their parents. But most children being naughty will not submit to what their parents ask them to do. It makes the parents forward to their bath time and learn to do it by themselves while playing?

Children will look forward to the bath time We know how children love bubbles, while they a circle or any other gadgets, even to ask their parents to buy a new toy for making bubbles. How to make a simple design and improvement need to buy a new one; then, make the children happy in their bath time?

36

SPONGE BUBBLE

Sponge bubble Less is more “Sponge Bubble” is an ordinary bath sponge. With “Sponge Bubble”, children have an easier way to make more bubbles. Parents need not buy a new toy for producing bubbles, and by reducing the volumes of the sponge, we create an incredible way to make bubbles, instead. And the children will look forward to enjoy their bath time. We add holes into it. Through the structure of holes the bubbles are easier to produce and gather. Children make bubbles with sponge retaining water and suds produced when bathing.

To many children, bubble is an incredible and a fascinating thing. Sponge Bubble is a set of environmentally-friendly bath sponge combining bubbles and sponge. Children may play bubble games through sponge absorption and soap water produced by taking bath, making bath time a favorite time of a day. In addition, due to the children’s habits in imitating adults, the sponge is designed into two sponges of various sizes, one big and one small so that the parent can teach their children on how to take a bath as well as to play bubbles together to enhance parent-child interaction.

37

SPONGE BUBBLE

Learning to Take A Bath Through Imitating Based on this, children can imitate how their parents bathe themselves with the big “Sponge Bubble”; thus, they learn to do it with the little one. At the same time, children produce bubbles and play with their parents. “Sponge Bubble” makes the children and their parents have a better relation. We combine the two elements, fun and teaching, to make our product. This makes children learn to bathe themselves easily. Children do not learn things by realizing, when they are too little. They learn things in their life, and the most important one is “imitation”. Parents are their models through which they learn by imitating what parents have done.

Small profits, quick returns Comparing with the ordinary bath sponges, “Sponge Bubble” is more attractive to the children and their parents. It not only provides with an easy way to make bubbles, but also makes the children learn how to take a bath from their parents. The producer will reduce 1/3 cost, and the costumers will have a good deal.
