Sigma Wellness: Brother to Brother Managing your Weight Eating Right Eating a heart-healthy diet can help you lower your weight, lower your cholesterol, and reduce your chance of the heart disease and stroke. Here are some tips to get you started: Eat a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish. Eat at least five servings of variety of fruits and vegetables every day. Eat six or more servings of cereals, breads, pastas, and other whole-grain products. Eat fish, poultry (without the skin), and leaner cuts of red meat instead of fatty ones. Drink nonfat or 1% milk dairy products rather than whole-milk dairy products. Use sugar sparingly and limit alcohol use. Make sure less than 30 percent of your daily caloric intake comes from fat. Choose monounsaturated fat over saturated or trans fat.
