Facts About Blood Needs Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. (2006). The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints. The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O. The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs. Sickle cell disease affects more than 80,000 people in the U.S., 98 percent of whom are African American. Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives. More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. Click here to register to host a Blood Drive http://www.redcrossblood.org/forms/host-blood-drive

Major Pain #4 No one know why it happens No one dares to ask why. No one understands God's plan No one knows why we die. I know your heart is saddened and your soul may be blue But God has a reason for taking Donnie from you. Its not your place to question nor is it mine to ask. The master has a purpose behind all his tasks Life will never be the same, I know without this man. Death is something no one knows nor ever will understand. You search for an answer but can not find why he has gone away. There must be the some peace of mind to face another day. Cry if you must, but do not ever forget, The times you spent together, the day you first met. Memories can take the place f all the tears you cry. Happy thoughts will fill your mind and replace the questions why. Now he has his wings and have flown away. Heaven knows he will be missed each and everyday. By, Rickeisha Salesman We will always miss you Donny. G.O.M.A.B. #4
During my travels around the country, I have come across many brothers. It is one of the wonderful benefits that are gifted to us being a member of this organization. During these instances, we witness examples of fraternal devotion that we file away in the “this is what it means to be a brother” category; often with the hopes of incorporating it into how we act towards our brother and sisters. This is small sample of the recollections I possess in regards to my line brother Roderick “Donny” Walker, the sigma known as Major Pain. The collection would have been much larger, but Donny was taken from us on April 1, 1997. Like most of the brothers on the Spring 1996 line, we had the opportunity to meet each other before we even had thoughts of joining our fraternity. I first met Donny when I was invited to attend the summer session in 1995. We bonded instantly because of our shared experiences having military parents and have being raised abroad. Donny shared a similar pride of his country that is easy instantly recognized. Military bearing and poise when under conflict is another trait that Donny displayed early in our pledging process. The first time that we are brought together, out of a line of nine, I can only remember one name that was spoken to the big brothers when ordered to introduce ourselves. “RODERICK WALKER!!! BORN, GUAM!!!” I can’t even remember how I said my own name. The most important thing that I miss about Donny is his ability for compassion. I am not a man of much means. It is easy to say that I suffered financially while attending college (If you ask some people, they would tell you that I still struggle financially, but I am learning). During the time we pledged and after, I cannot accurately recall how many times Donny, abusing his power as a McDonald’s assistant manager, would bring me food. He never looked down on me. He never made me feel unworthy. Whenever something was going on, he would always check and make sure I was getting there… even if I didn’t travel with him. The day of Donny’s funeral, I was listening to my other line brother, Jermaine Hankerson, relate his thoughts about Donny’s death. While everyone kept the mood somber, Hank got to the microphone and said my final recollection about Donny. I wish I could aptly retell the story, but that is too much Jermaine to put on one paper and it wouldn’t do the memory justice, but he said that Donny was a fighter and he did not go down easily.
