02 Poetical Living Master of Architecture (MSD, 2018) / Studio E

DURATION: PLACE: PROJECT TYPE: PROGRAM: PLOT AREA: TUTOR:

13 weeks design Melbourne, Australia Individual Work High-Density Dwelling Complex 2000 m2 Laura Martires

This project aims to speculate a sustainable living environment that people can have better understanding of “poetical living, provide ways to interact with other people, other livings and environment. These ideas may be conveyed by the residents. Eventually more people will become aware of the importance of protecting our environment, instead of suffering from the consequence such as climate change.

4

A Pathway to A Sustainable Future The emergence of cities has changed people’s living styles. The technology and industrialization have made people disconnected with other people and our environment. The food we eat, energy we use, water we drink, waste we dump, they are all part of the urban infrastructure which can be easily ignored when we are so deeply involved in. People’s environmental awareness can get worse when they interact less with nature.

..Poetically Man Dwells...

... May, if life is sheer toil, a man lift his eyes and say: so I too wish to be? Yes. As long as Kidness, The Pure, still stays with his heart, man Not unhappily measures himself Against the godhead. Is God unknown? Is he manifest like the sky? I’d sooner Believe the latter. It’s the measure of man. Full of merit, yet poetically, man Dwells on this earth. But no purer Is the shade of the starry night, If I might put it so, than Man, who’s called an image of the godhead. Is there a measure on earth? There is None ...

The environmental crisis associated with urbanization have been well recognised in fields of ecology and design. But very few of us would ever want to admit that environmental crisis is a design crisis. Probably one of the better places in the world to observe this phenomenon are Galapagos Islands. Human population arrived in the islands 500 years ago and for centuries the balance between human and natural system has been maintain, but in the past 50 years this situation has dramatically changed and one of the most pristine natural environments in the world is now under severe threat, due to increase population, and number of tourists. Furthermore, most of designed interventions have not reduced but increased number of problems.

14

The Complex Adaptive System approach was taken in order to understand different systems in Galapagos Islands, including water, food, waste, energy, waste and knowledge. Interactive models were built to help us develop proposal for sustainable and resilient future of Galapagos.

SITE

This design aims to create a landmark include an office tower and commercial space in the podiumin. The site locates at the intersection of Latrobe St and Exihibition St which is at the edge of CBD. As the site is inbetween two different urban grids, the basic volume respond to the CBD grid while the grid on the north is used to cut the volume.

06 The Library in Motion With the development of the society, conventional libraries sometimes cannot fulfill people's needs. Nowadays, library is not just a space for acquiring knowledge, but also a place for exchanging knowledge through physical or digital media. This library is designed to create multi-functional and adaptable space throughout the day in order to maximize the performance, or space usage of the building. Different programs alter their space to satisfy different users in China town during the day, including students officer workers, tourists and staff.

Projects in CallisonRTKL Hangzhou Riverside Powerlong Plaza

Powerlong Hangzhou Binjiang Mixed Use is located in Hangzhou, close to Qiantang River. Since the target users are young people, fashion, as the main element, was intended to be emphasized in this project. In this project, I participated in the facade development of the mall.

Greenland Qingpu Mixed Use

Greenland Qingpu Mixed Use is located in qingpu district in Shanghai, which is famous for its water town. There are two rivers around this site and the concept is to integrate the river into landscape and provide more small scale space near the water. In this project, I participated in the facade design of the mall and office tower, as well as the canopy along the main axis.

Sanya CITS Hexin Island Mixed Use is located in Hainan, China. The concept is to bring the sea breeze into the buildings, which creates a dialogue between human and nature. I participate in the facade design of two anchor stores and the canopy across the whole site.

ZENDAI Nanjing Dama RD Retail Street 透视图 PERSPECTIVE

Dama Road was once flourishing during the republic of China era. This project is aim to bring the vitality back to this area by creating commercial activities. Many historical buildings remain in this site, therefore, the design must deal with the relationship between historical buildings and the new ones. In this project, I participated in the concept design stage and some facade development during the process.

Practice projects in Uni-Form 2015 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season Report - Suhe Greek

Suhe Greek was once the commercial and industrial centers in Shanghai. Plenty of banks and warehouse were built along the riverside. This exhibition was hold in a historical building which reflects the concept of symbiosis, between history and new development.

Renovation room shows the renewal process of those historical buildings along the river.

Public space room shows the public space along the river bank which tries to indicate relationship between old urban planning map (on the ground) and current skyline( on the wall) around the river.
