Infrastructure always associated with largescale public facilities and services, usually have positive influences on societal living conditions. However, it could also reduce the quality of urban space and people’s lives when it is located in a highdensity area, such as Melbourne CBD. The rapid growth of population in Melbourne has created an increasing demand for infrastructure, especially infrastructure for transportation. The key question I want to research on is: How to make better use of infrastructure at larger scale to create opportunities at every scale?

Efficient transportation system has brought convenience to people’s daily lives. However, some problems has been brought as well. The site is located in the edge of CBD, around the railway starts from Southern cross station to Flinder station. The two stations, as well as the railway have become an invisible boundary that reduce the accessibility cross the whole site. Pedestrian and cycling movement are both affected by the railway, which is one of the urgent problems needed to be improved by the Greenline project.

02 Poetical Living Master of Architecture (MSD, 2018) / Studio E
DURATION: PLACE: PROJECT TYPE: PROGRAM: PLOT AREA: TUTOR:
13 weeks design Melbourne, Australia Individual Work High-Density Dwelling Complex 2000 m2 Laura Martires
A Pathway to A Sustainable Future The emergence of cities has changed people’s living styles. The technology and industrialization have made people disconnected with other people and our environment. The food we eat, energy we use, water we drink, waste we dump, they are all part of the urban infrastructure which can be easily ignored when we are so deeply involved in. People’s environmental awareness can get worse when they interact less with nature.
This project aims to speculate a sustainable living environment that people can have better understanding of “poetical living”, provide ways to interact with other people, other livings and environment. These ideas may be conveyed by the residents. Eventually more people will become aware of the importance of protecting our environment, instead of suffering from the consequence such as climate change.

..Poetically Man Dwells...
... May, if life is sheer toil, a man lift his eyes and say: so I too wish to be? Yes. As long as Kidness, The Pure, still stays with his heart, man Not unhappily measures himself Against the godhead. Is God unknown? Is he manifest like the sky? I’d sooner Believe the latter. It’s the measure of man. Full of merit, yet poetically, man Dwells on this earth. But no purer Is the shade of the starry night, If I might put it so, than Man, who’s called an image of the godhead. Is there a measure on earth? There is None ...

The Complex Adaptive System approach was taken in order to understand different systems in Galapagos Islands, including water, food, waste, energy, waste and knowledge. Interactive models were built to help us develop proposal for sustainable and resilient future of Galapagos.

The environmental crisis associated with urbanization have been well recognised in fields of ecology and design. But very few of us would ever want to admit that environmental crisis is a design crisis. Probably one of the better places in the world to observe this phenomenon are Galapagos Islands. Human population arrived in the islands 500 years ago and for centuries the balance between human and natural system has been maintain, but in the past 50 years this situation has dramatically changed and one of the most pristine natural environments in the world is now under severe threat, due to increase population, and number of tourists. Furthermore, most of designed interventions have not reduced but increased number of problems.

DURATION: PLACE: PROJECT TYPE: PROGRAM: PLOT AREA: TUTOR:
14 weeks design Shanghai, China Individual Work Large Scale Mixed Use 8000 m2 Christiane M. Herr
[A Response to Non-Uniform] This project aims to coordinate human scale and urban scale as a landmark on the Huangpu River. Strong relationship can be found between the bridge and its context, as well as the river. The functions are provided according to the demand of both locals and tourists. View, as one core factor, was used to influence the form and provide different experience through the journey.
40
41
Urban Strategies
Coherence of Scale Since the scale of the bridge would be similar as the skyscrapers in Pu dong which can be considered as a landmark. Landmark is always isolated from the streets, as well as the people on the streets. In order to decrease the sense of isolation, fractal is used to cohere different scales, from human scale to urban scale. Fractal can also be an appropriate rule for the symbiotic system that allow different typologies coexist. Therefore, the wholeness will be kept as the attribute of a landmark. Meanwhile, the small scale space would dissolve the sense of isolation.

06 Shanghai Picks BEng Architecture / Level 03 (2013)
DURATION: PLACE: PROJECT TYPE: PROGRAM: PLOT AREA: TUTOR:
14 weeks Shanghai, China Individual work Medium scale Building 8400 m2 Christian Gaenshirt
[Urban Parasitism] The urban parasitism phenomenon in Shanghai old city reflects the old life style of Shanghai. The "illegal building" take up the community space which increase the living density of the community and reduce living quality, as well as the environment. The parasitism also open opportunities for interesting space. This project will use the parasitism as a form language to create a dialogue between old and new..
46
47
Concept Development
Site Analysis Due to the limited land and the materials, the houses in this area have a tendency to develop in verticle way. But the traditional materials can hardly achieve that tendency. A lot of additional space are created based on the original buildings. This ‘add-on’ typology can be used to create a new type of parasitism.
Divide the community by density level
Add more commercial activities
48
Create new streets to improve circulation
Connect new streets with the old ones
Add two residential towers
Add more facilities and nodes
49
First Floor
Structure Development The main structure is made of pre-fabricated concrete blocks which make the structure elements more clean and reduce difficulty of construction and fabrication. The concrete frame through the building would make the space more interesting and people can clearly see the structure as well.

DURATION: PLACE: PROJECT TYPE: PROGRAM: PLOT AREA: TUTOR:
6 weeks Suzhou, China Individual work Small Urban Building 530 m2 Claudia Westermann
[Attached Public Space] This project is aim to improve the living quality of a hostel by attaching public space to private space. The public space can be seen as an adjunct to the building, which will keep the order for the main function.
52
The emergence of youth hostel is a response to the demands by young people, who may not afford the hotel. Depressing space and limited service facilities can be found in most of youth hostels. In order to relieve the negative effects caused by living in the cabined containers, social activities and public space are required to be introduced into the hostel. The challenge of this project is to balance public and private, open and close in a limited space in Suzhou downtown.

Dama Road was once flourishing during the republic of China era. This project is aim to bring the vitality back to this area by creating commercial activities. Many historical buildings remain in this site, therefore, the design must deal with the relationship between historical buildings and the new ones. In this project, I participated in the concept design stage.
Suhe Greek was once the commercial and industrial centers in Shanghai. Plenty of banks and warehouse were built along the riverside. This exhibition was hold in a historical building which reflects the concept of symbiosis, between history and new development.
