When is the last time that you used cell phone? Hardly ever disconnected. Even during the time I am writing, my cell phone is always ready to get contact. Thousands of new articles, digital artworks created by individuals are uploaded everyday. And they are useing various way to get the attention from people and letting people know they are connected. It has been such a long time to live daily life without cellphone. It has thousands of information and knowledge could make life better than ever. However it makes people also wonder, ‘Do I really need them?’. Whether it is needed or not, it is hard to escape from this connection. For the first time in human’s life, disconnection became extra-ordinary thing. However that doesn’t mean human are already used to live always-connected life.

LEARNING BAND School Design Urban, Island and Nature related area Academic Work University of Oulu 18/19 Spring Semester Contemporary Architecture IV Individual Project

”what kind of school will be suitable for the new secondary school?” School should have function as learning space. Nowadays it is necessary to teach 2 types of learning method General group teaching and indivi-dual learning. At the same time school’s important function is get student socialize while studying, eating and playing together.

Perspective view 01 How to enter the school is also important None Scale

How to put the building on the site in a right way is always related with the context of the site. Since the shape of the building start by making core space middle and distribu-te sub functional spaces nearby, the mo-numentality of the building was quite same as round or rectangular buildings which as core space in the middle. So to prevent more monu-mental, strong gesture, the building will be located not exactly middle of the island but slightly off the axe of center line of the island. And by doing that there are some benefits could be achieved. Building is located

slightly away from the entrance of the island to make continue of journey from the bridge making similar vibe as walking through the forest. The west side of the site will be full of traffic noise from the bridge lead to the city center. By placing gym and secondary entran-ce, it is possible to minimize public circulation and noise towards the east side of the island. At the same time the vehicle traffic could be held west side of the island. If there is an additional connection lead to the island near the bridge so that the pedestrian will be separated from the vehicle circulation. 11

The outer circle(ramp and corridor) which is named as learning circle banding whole building into one will make flexible area. It is hard to make flexible corridor without widen the width

of it and most of the time the corridor remains just seating place or just wide walking path without connection between inner facilities. 13

Section 01, 02 Flexibility of the spaces-Multi-purpose rooms. 1 : 200 (A1)

Auditorium will have foldable door so that it could be extended to the gallery area. Also the seats will be stacked behind so that auditorium will be not only used as music hall but also for the large exhibition and small musical practice spaces. If there is no exhibition in the gallery, the space could be used as gathering space also for the stage of the music hall. Ceiling of the auditorium will be covered by sound absorbing materials. 14

The library will be the first space which welcomes all the visitors and students. Right next to the dining area, it will be also space where students can gather before and after lunch time. The staircase will perform as seating place as well and large bookshelves will emphasize the function of library. Above the space, the roof window will brighten the whole space during summer time.

Elevation 01, 02 How to bring the light inside? 1 : 200 (A1)

How to bring the light inside is important task for every kinds of building. Especially in educational buildings, it is suggeted to get enough daily light during school hours. To manage to get enough sun light, the whole facade will be made out of crystal.

Library and gallary will have roof window which will work as atrium. High placed windows will be place gym and classrooms to bring direct light.

Inbetween staff’s area and ge-neral study room there will be court yard to bring light in to the both of the spaces.

GARDEN IN THE BARN Renovation Design Nature-related Area Competition Teemaker’s Guesthouse competition Individual Project

People travel to see, feel and experience different and special moments. Tea-making itself could be one of the extraordinary events that people may looking for. Then how could the architecture enhance that and still be co-related with the building and surrounding? This brought various questions such as, ”What kinds of special experience that the architecture could bring to the people who visit this guest house?”, ”How could it be closer to the nature?”, ”What would you expect people to feel when they are inside of the building?”, ”Why do people want to visit tea-making place?” and so on. Answering those questions lead to the design solutions. Those who are willing to visit place where the forest and lake are, must be the ones want different vibes from the city. They want to be in the nature. Then architecture should support this. What kind of design could let visitors enjoy the nature the most? People who visit here will no longer separated by the wall from the nature. They will feel the nature as if they are outside. The changing of the time will bring dramatic moments inside, while their tea is getting ready.

Perspective view Feel the nature from the inside. None scale

16

All the guestrooms will have skylight through the open ceiling. Privacy will be protected by the curtains located on the walls. People can see the sky in different times of a day or season. Skylight will bring majority of the light inside. Windows on the top of the roof will be open during summer time, making chimney effects to cool down the building. All the windows will have blind to avoid getting too much sunlight inside. Lights dangling from the roof has been designed not to block the scene of the roof. Lights from the ground to illuminate the garden would be dim-able to enjoy night sky of the Latvia. When it comes to renovation, it is always important to think about which material will be remained and replaced. Stone walls have this poetic aesthetics which is nicely get along with the

surrounding nature. On the other hand they are making clear line to separate outside and inside. It is necessary to blur the areas so that even if there are massive stone walls visitors could feel the outside freely. To make more openings on the walls could lose the sense that walls have. Instead, roof of the building could be replaced as glass roof which will allow people to feel outside and also bring more light than making openings on the walls. To bring more In-the-nature feeling inside, there will be the inner garden with designed lights. First thing to see when visitors enters the building will be the garden where tea plants would grow too. The tea-making place(workshop) will be right next to the garden so that visitors will now the whole process of tea-making from the real beginning.

Surrounded by forest, Virpiniemi is a place of beautiful nature – sandy ridges rare in the Oulu area, a long coastline and two very different types of flora. Over four distinctive seasons they display the subtle yet rich color palette of Finnish nature. Through our design we want to offer our visitor a peaceful and calming setting to support this experience, while at the same time treating them to high-quality Finnish design and culture.

Placing urban center was the first task at the same time the most important task to do. Existing urban area which is marked as ’sports area’ is quite far from beautiful beach which is also hidden behind the golf-course area. This region defiantly need central place to enter and gather.

The urban center should offer accommodation place, welcoming area, clear pathway to the other areas. Which means this place should act as a connection place. The most suitable area to locate urban center was in between sports area and beach area.

ROAMING ROOM Portable/moveable house Futuristic Project Academic Work University of Seoul 16 Spring Semester Bachelor’s Thesis Project / Design Studio IIV Individual Project

Can I take my home anywhere with me? This simple question inside was the starting point of this project. The modern urban citizens always ‘MOVE’ to work, go back home and live their own lives. This kind of lifestyle can be defined as ‘URBAN NOMADs’. The technology will be developed as the Urban Nomad’s demands. Also the life style of Urban Nomads will be more like ‘MOVING-LIFE’. Mobility of the life will be increased, and finally Urban Nomads will demand Mobile house for their convenient. The house will be minimized for mobility and it will contain multifunctional system.

It hadn’t been a long time that people made settlement to live. Majority of the people lived as nomads. They moved to find better place to live and moved again. After the agriculture revolution, people started to settle down to cultivate more crops. However people still moved around to seek for better knowledge, trade and exploring new world. Now the world is being developed faster and faster. Even though still many people are

settled down and hopping for getting home to live in, situation is not same as before. Society requires more movement and longer distance of moving. No longer, people need to live in a same place for entire life, yet many already don’t live in a same place. The meaning of home is different from the past. It is time to design new type of the home. It is also a role of architects to design mobile house.

INFORMATION PATH IG(SLOVENIA) Information Centre / Bus station / Gallery Nature-related / Heritage-related project Academic Work University of Ljubljana 14/15 Winter Semester (Exchange Student) Design Studio Individual Project

Sometimes, preserving site would be more important than building something on the site. However, even though the site should not be touched if something is needed to be built, the architect should touch the site as minimum as possible. All the materials which will be used should be got from the site and possible to go back to the site. The earth itself will be the container of the program. Also the earth itself will give the information what would visitors really want: piles placed underground. These masses will go back to the site after all, as a ground again.

2. Cutting the ground taken out into adequate size.

3. Placing the masses on the ground.

Concept Diagram - From ground to form the structure Section of the place IG is full of interesting features. The most intriguing thing is hidden underneath of the ground. None Scale

Every ground is the result of the historical layers been stacked up. It doesn’t only apply for the historical cities but also for the natural sites. Ig, Slovenia is the place where corn farm is located, might not be special for in field of architecture until the layer of one of the most ancient types of living would be found under the ground. It is so called ’Pile-Dwellings’; UNESCO Natural Heritage. One critical thing about this is it should not meet the oxygen

due to prevent from decay. It should either remain under the water or wet ground. What if there is technology to take out the ground completely with current condition, the ground taken out will be the living evidence for the information which is necessary. People will get information about pile-dwellings directly from the mass made from the ground.

In other words the Mediatheque could collect the information and generate knowledge which is the Recording Device. In terms of ‘Recording information’, the every single moment that held inside this building could be recorded. For example, from very minor things the movement of the people through Ramp which is main circulation system of this building to the intangible moments such as concerts, events even minor actions happen in the event area.

Artificial Topography

Section Diagram of the city Making artificial topography to connect the historical building and the main street. None Scale

As a historical building, the Myeongdong Cathedral is iconic architecture in Myeongdong. Comparison with the size of the buildings which are commercial, the size of the relegious buildings are bigger and taking more space. However there is lack of connection between main street and the historical and rerigious buildings. At the same time the largest building next to the cathedral which is also the historical building, has the unnessacary large parking lot in front of the

main entrance. In this project, Intension of making the artificial topography is to connect the historical building at the same time making welcoming entrance for the Building itself and Myeongdong area. Multifuctional library will possible to contain the various events which will be held in this area. Connection between old building and new will also bring additional value for this project.

Context for forest is the thing that urban never could contain. Even though people wants to live in urban area yet at the same time people wants to bring greenery nearby. If there is chance to build space in the forest without making severe trace but for temporary staying, it is enough to make strong identity and to be attractive place for tourist. Shape of the place should be considered as one of the objects in the forest. Interaction between inside of the space and forest could be seen as passive action. However walking around the forest to find the space will be enough experience as an active action.

The brightness of the inside space will be controlled by window cover (2). Windows (5) are openable so that the person inside could manually open/close the window cover. Pine Paanu (1) will cover whole structure so that the structure will have similar shape and feeling as pine cones. Through the heat transmitting pipe (4), first the smoke will be spread horizontally.

Pipe will be placed under neath of the seats. In summer time, those pipes under the seats will be locked so that the heat won’t warm the seat and the place too much. Rain water will be stored in the water storage (7). The pipe from the roof is filled with the filters inside.

Samchung dong is the place where the desire of development and preservation of Hanok are coexisting. Especially demolishing Hanok to build non Hanok is restricted. However by allowing renovation of Hanok, people could fulfill the desire of development a little bit. Another specific thing is in the case of renovation of Hanok, the space could expanded as far as its roof line. This building above, shows one of the way that how to renovate Hanok. As commercial areas, they were expanded as much as possible. The brick walls had been expanded as far as roof line. It also dug the basement to the level of ground. These physical changes make this spaces more accessible.

Iso metric view of commercial+residential housing in Bukchon Building analysis - How to change form of building due to different situation None Scale

To change the program of this building, we could see that physical condition of the building had to be changed as well. However not only the physical condition had changed, but also the relationship between the street (public) and two spaces (private) changed. Before the building had renovated, two spaces were private residential area. And a physical wall blocked two spaces to make there could be no direct communication with the street. In this kind of condi-

tion, the street works as a road. After the condition has changed, this made the spaces have possibility of communication with the street which making the street as a experiential spaces. Finally this change contributes to activate the street.

APPENDIX Small project/ Illustration/ Photograph + Construction Drawing Academic Work 2009 - 2018 Design Studio/ Travel /Archiving Individual Project

People need to know how to enjoy their lives. Some people travel around the world to learn and experience new things. However even if people visit same city, they feel and see differently and look for different things. Studying architecture make people see differently. It makes us to see the material, atmosphere of the place, brightness of lightings and look for extra meaning could be hidden in the space. Yet people’s brain is not perfect it needs specific device to archive all the aspects. Drawing, taking picture and writing are one of the classical archiving skills, yet are still powerful, enjoy-able and making us to think better.
