MIRROR CUBE Gallery Design Urban Area Academic Work University of Oulu 18/19 Spring Semester Contemporary Architecture IV Individual Project When is the last time that you used cell phone? Hardly ever disconnected. Even during the time I am writing, my cell phone is always ready to get contact. Thousands of new articles, digital artworks created by individuals are uploaded everyday. And they are useing various way to get the attention from people and letting people know they are connected. It has been such a long time to live daily life without cellphone. It has thousands of information and knowledge could make life better than ever. However it makes people also wonder, ‘Do I really need them?’. Whether it is needed or not, it is hard to escape from this connection. For the first time in human’s life, disconnection became extra-ordinary thing. However that doesn’t mean human are already used to live always-connected life.

THINKING TRANSFORMATION Analysis of design process / Mökki / Playground Both Nature- and urban-related Academic Work / Diploma project University of Oulu 19/20 Winter Semester Design analysis by designing Individual Project

Designing process vary from every architect. Depends on personal experiences such as education and cultural background, what kinds of environment is neal by or what kind of tools are available, each person will choose their own path to finalize. By analysing my own design process, I wanted to present how different the results of design could be. 4 Final designs were made by selecting different locations, purposes, scales, functions and other possible conditions which could affect to the process of the design.

Granurality map It is important to make connection between sports area to coast area. 1 : 5000 (A2)

How to put the building on the site in a right way is always related with the context of the site. Since the shape of the building start by making core space middle and distribu-te sub functional spaces nearby, the mo-numentality of the building was quite same as round or rectangular buildings which as core space in the middle. So to prevent more monu-mental, strong gesture, the building will be located not exactly middle of the island but slightly off the axe of center line of the island. And by doing that there are some benefits could be achieved. Building is located slightly away from the entrance of the island to make continue of journey from the bridge making similar vibe as walking through the forest.

The west side of the site will be full of traffic noise from the bridge lead to the city center. By placing gym and secondary entran-ce, it is possible to minimize public circulation and noise towards the east side of the island. At the same time the vehicle traffic could be held west side of the island. If there is an additional connection lead to the island near the bridge so that the pedestrian will be separated from the vehicle circulation.

Auditorium will have foldable door so that it could be extended to the gallery area. Also the seats will be stacked behind so that auditorium will be not only used as music hall but also for the large exhibition and small musical practice spaces. If there is no exhibition in the gallery, the space could be used as gathering space also for the stage of the music hall. Ceiling of the auditorium will be covered by sound absorbing materials.

20

The library will be the first space which welcomes all the visitors and students. Right next to the dining area, it will be also space where students can gather before and after lunch time. The staircase will perform as seating place as well and large bookshelves will emphasize the function of library. Above the space, the roof window will brighten the whole space during summer time.

Perspective view 02 Corridor will be en event space, various scenarios will be possible to be held. None Scale

The outer circle(ramp and corridor) which is named as learning circle banding whole building into one will make flexible area. It is hard to make flexible corridor without widen the width

of it and most of the time the corridor remains just seating place or just wide walking path without connection between inner facilities.

Elevation 01, 02 How to bring the light inside? 1 : 200 (A1)

How to bring the light inside is important task for every kinds of building. Especially in educational buildings, it is suggeted to get enough daily light during school hours. To manage to get enough sun light, the whole facade will be made out of crystal.

Inbetween staff’s area and ge-neral study room there will be court yard to bring light in to the both of the spaces. Library and gallary will have roof window which will work as atrium. High placed windows will be place gym and classrooms to bring direct light.

GARDEN IN THE BARN Renovation Design Nature-related Area Competition Teemaker’s Guesthouse competition Individual Project People travel to see, feel and experience different and special moments. Tea-making itself could be one of the extraordinary events that people may looking for. Then how could the architecture enhance that and still be co-related with the building and surrounding? This brought various questions such as, ”What kinds of special experience that the architecture could bring to the people who visit this guest house?”, ”How could it be closer to the nature?”, ”What would you expect people to feel when they are inside of the building?”, ”Why do people want to visit tea-making place?” and so on. Answering those questions lead to the design solutions. Those who are willing to visit place where the forest and lake are, must be the ones want different vibes from the city. They want to be in the nature. Then architecture should support this. What kind of design could let visitors enjoy the nature the most? People who visit here will no longer separated by the wall from the nature. They will feel the nature as if they are outside. The changing of the time will bring dramatic moments inside, while their tea is getting ready.

ROAMING ROOM Portable/moveable house Futuristic Project Academic Work University of Seoul 16 Spring Semester Bachelor’s Thesis Project / Design Studio IIV Individual Project Can I take my home anywhere with me? This simple question inside was the starting point of this project. The modern urban citizens always ‘MOVE’ to work, go back home and live their own lives. This kind of lifestyle can be defined as ‘URBAN NOMADs’. The technology will be developed as the Urban Nomad’s demands. Also the life style of Urban Nomads will be more like ‘MOVING-LIFE’. Mobility of the life will be increased, and finally Urban Nomads will demand Mobile house for their convenient. The house will be minimized for mobility and it will contain multifunctional system.

It hadn’t been a long time that people made settlement to live. Majority of the people lived as nomads. They moved to find better place to live and moved again. After the agriculture revolution, people started to settle down to cultivate more crops. However people still moved around to seek for better knowledge, trade and exploring new world. Now the world is being developed faster and faster. Even though still many people are settled down and hopping for getting home to live in, situation is not same as before. Society requires more movement and longer distance of moving.

No longer, people need to live in a same place for entire life, yet many already don’t live in a same place. The meaning of home is different from the past. It is time to design new type of the home. It is also a role of architects to design mobile house.

INFORMATION PATH IG(SLOVENIA) Information Centre / Bus station / Gallery Nature-related / Heritage-related project Academic Work University of Ljubljana 14/15 Winter Semester (Exchange Student) Design Studio Individual Project

Sometimes, preserving site would be more important than building something on the site. However, even though the site should not be touched if something is needed to be built, the architect should touch the site as minimum as possible. All the materials which will be used should be got from the site and possible to go back to the site. The earth itself will be the container of the program. Also the earth itself will give the information what would visitors really want: piles placed underground. These masses will go back to the site after all, as a ground again.

32

1. Taking out the ground from the site.

2. Cutting the ground taken out into adequate size.

3. Placing the masses on the ground.

Concept Diagram - From ground to form the structure Section of the place IG is full of interesting features. The most intriguing thing is hidden underneath of the ground. None Scale

Every ground is the result of the historical layers been stacked up. It doesn’t only apply for the historical cities but also for the natural sites. Ig, Slovenia is the place where corn farm is located, might not be special for in field of architecture until the layer of one of the most ancient types of living would be found under the ground. It is so called ’Pile-Dwellings’; UNESCO Natural Heritage. One critical thing about this is it should not meet the oxygen

due to prevent from decay. It should either remain under the water or wet ground. What if there is technology to take out the ground completely with current condition, the ground taken out will be the living evidence for the information which is necessary. People will get information about pile-dwellings directly from the mass made from the ground.

KÄPY KAHVILLA(Pine cone cafe) Industrial Design/ Pavilion Design Nature-related Area Academic Work University of Oulu 18/19 Winter Semester Design in Urban Context Individual Project

Context for forest is the thing that urban never could contain. Even though people wants to live in urban area yet at the same time people wants to bring greenery nearby. If there is chance to build space in the forest without making severe trace but for temporary staying, it is enough to make strong identity and to be attractive place for tourist. Shape of the place should be considered as one of the objects in the forest. Interaction between inside of the space and forest could be seen as passive action. However walking around the forest to find the space will be enough experience as an active action.

The brightness of the inside space will be controlled by window cover (2). Windows (5) are openable so that the person inside could manually open/close the window cover. Pine Paanu (1) will cover whole structure so that the structure will have similar shape and feeling as pine cones. Through the heat transmitting pipe (4), first the smoke will be spread horizontally.

Pipe will be placed under neath of the seats. In summer time, those pipes under the seats will be locked so that the heat won’t warm the seat and the place too much. Rain water will be stored in the water storage (7). The pipe from the roof is filled with the filters inside.
