WHY NEST? 5 YEARS

3 “WE HAD CONNECTED PRODUCTS, BUT WHAT WE WANTED TO DO WAS CONNECT THE WHOLE THING TOGETHER.

Combining exquisite design with best-in-class features and the added benefit of connectivity, Nest products are revolutionizing the modern home, creating an unprecedented level of ease and control over our appliances. Nest is famous for designing the smart thermostat, catapulting smart home technology and the internet of things to the forefront of consumer culture in recent years. Adding a smart smoke/CO detector and eventually a line of smart security products after the initial success of the thermostat, it was clear that their vision was not just to enhance consumer experience with these particular devices but to implant a smart interconnectedness into every conventional home product, redefining the way we live.

WHY DIYHEALTH? Between 2015-2020, the smart home market is estimated to grow from $25.38 billion to $56.18 billion, and the assisted living market from 1.2 billion to 3.96 billion, a 300% increase. By 2041, it’s estimated that 25% of Canada’s population will be 65+ years of age.

Accessing this market as they are entering old age, and creating accessible goods and services that work during different levels of independence and ability has the potential to drastically change Nest’s market scope and extend their user base.

DESIGN DIRECTIONS (5Ws)

WHO

Families with seniors who are partially independent who cannot accommodate them at home or are seeking alternatives to nursing homes.

WHAT

A redesigned Nest app and personal assistant that uses existing smart home products to provide optimized elder care.

WHEN

The system would be always-on, with personalized preferences that can allow or restrict access and control if desired.

WHERE

Nest care would use smart products connected within the home, operated from the caregivers’ devices wherever they are.

HOW

Using the latent capabilities of internet-of-things products and new algorithms within an app, the system could provide an enhanced home life for seniors.

10

STARTING NOW

CENTRAL HUB: THE NEST CARE APP Using what’s already there to provide expert care. The nest care app would use the technology already present in Nest’s and other smart home devices in a brand new way. This would allow a caregiver or a group of caregivers to monitor the elder, easily divide up support funds and interact with a loved one who is far away. The app would also include added features tailored specifically to seniors to enhance their smart home experience.

WEARABLE HEALTH MONITORING DEVICES Nest comes even closer to the body, keeping you in the know. The next phase of NestCare would be an alwayson wearable that would provide consistent up-todate data regarding vitals and other health details. Should a fall, heart attack or gradual buildup of risk factors be detected, the caregivers would be notified immediately. The device would also substitute the smart assistant hub, making sure the individual being cared for has constant access to household control and their caregivers.

Nest with you wherever you go. • Monitors vitals & movement • Feeds into weekly schedule; if senior is over exerting themselves or if they are able to exercise further and how their diet should change accordingly • If seniors are overheated, dehydrated or over exhausted, recommends close by places to rest and recharge. If needed, will also send for the self driving car to pick them up and take them home or to a hospital in an emergency • If senior goes in unmarked area, perhaps gets lost or disoriented, the tracker is able to locate and direct senior home either by foot or with their self driving car • If senior contracted a virus or unwanted bacteria while out, their tracker is able to predict a sickness and recommend the necessary steps to reduce symptoms • Depending on seniors’ location, flight is able to communicate with the home, ensuring heat turns on, dinner is defrosting and ambient music is turned on upon their arrival • Flight will recommend nearby events, sales and happenings the senior may be interested in to increase social interactions

IMPLANTS AND INTEGRATED TECH Technology that’s a part of you. We see the final stages of this concept being a fully integrated system that monitors vitals easily and comfortably. The data gathered would be tracked and monitored through the app, indicating possible health issues and letting the family know immediately if there is an emergency.

HALLWAY

You leave the house to go on your daily walk. You are more forgetful than you used to be, and forget to lock the door on your way out. Luckily, your wearable communicates with your home, and locks the door for you and minimizes the heating system while it senses you moving further away. When you’re gone your daughter will come by to drop off some baked cookies she made with your grandson. The security camera recognizes their faces and lets them in to put the cookies inside, and notifies you that they’ve entered.

KITCHEN It’s suppertime and you start to prep your meal. The fridge pulls up a recipe on the door display screen based on the items inside, and you start to chop and steam some vegetables. You want to add broccoli to the recipe, but Robert, the fridge, recommends you throw it out, as it has been sitting there for a while now. The oven preheats to the recipe’s recommendation and you slide in a baking pan of chicken breast to cook. You set the table, and soon everything is finished and ready to eat. Before you sit down, Robert dispenses your evening medications and a cup of water. As you sit down and enjoy the meal, your oven starts to clean itself and the fridge updates stock contents, ordering the ingredients you are now low on. You tell your smart hub that the meal rated a 4.5/5, and it adds it to the ‘likes’ list of recipes. Your calorie and nutritional intake data is sent to your caregiver, providing better analysis and future treatment options for your minor heart issues.

CONCLUSION

BENEFITS TO BRAND

Extending Nest’s market beyond luxury tech By launching NestCare, the brand could reach entire new customer bases who may not have pictured how the technology would integrate into their lives beforehand. As the aging population gets increasingly larger (and tech-aware), our society will need new, convenient and integrated solutions that fit into the busy millennial lifestyle. This is a segment of the consumer goods market that remains largely untouched by the current tech landscape, leaving the possibility for Nest to solidify brand dominance over the field as the sector develops. Because the app would carry minimal production costs and would encourage sales without the need to offer any immediate tangible product, NestCare fully takes advantage of latent market opportunity, potentially providing major benefit to the brand.
