2 I SKILLS EXCHANGE HUB

Merseyway Shopping Centre in Stockport is home to over 90 stores including high street favourites. The centre’s name, Merseyway, comes from the fact that the centre is built on giant stilts above the River Mersey and the river runs for the entire length of the centre. The centre was opened in 1965, as one of the first shopping precincts in the United Kingdom. The buildings I chose are apart of the Adlington Walk which is well connected to River as well as The Great Underbank which is the road to Old Town Stockport. Being the centre of two prominent parts of the redevelopment this building is the most suitable to accommodate my proposal.

The demographic in Stockport has a balance of young peopl as well as the old. Residential wise, many of the people aged between 2450 works outside of Stockport such as Manchester and London due to the direct lines from the train station.

Based on research, many teenagers are causing trouble all around Stockport. This might be due to the lack of a creative outlet or space for them to learn or let out their energy as well as afterschool activities which would not only benefit them knowledgebly but energetically as well. On the other hand, the old has years of knowledge but sometimes disconnected from society.

In order to bridge the gap between these two demographics to not only reconnect the communities. inter generational activities will be proposed. This will not only allow the young to learn life long basic skills, it is also an opputunity to preserve these skills that are being taght by the old aged specialists.

Exploded Axonometric

In order to promote biodiversity and sense of community the proposal was guided by the existing beams and slabs were cut out to accomodate the sizes of the programmes. New columns and beam were introduce to reinforce the green roofs. Planters were also designed all around site with public parks proosed on the left, right and front of the site. It is then connected via bridges at different levels as well as steps down to the river.
