intro..

Every act of creation is first an act of Pablo Picasso

The creation of something means the destruction of something else. We can create through destruction in the literal sense, in that in order to write a book, a tree dies or that in order to mature and grow to make room for something new, something else has to be left behind. The creative process, in particular, depends so much on destruction. Everyday I encounter something that has been created through destruction. I will take you through a journey of my experiences with destruction and creation, and emphasize how important they are in combination with each other.

how is formed? SOUND

As something vibrates, sound forms. The vibrating medium forces the surrounding air to also vibrate, which are called traveling longitu-

dinal The patterns of sound waves include areas of high and low pressure, which create unique sounds and vary depending on the length and speed of the wave. These elements determine the frequency of the pitch; in other words, the l o n g e r the wavelength, the lower the pitch and vice versa. The amplitude, viceversa

how the sound will be, is determined by the of the wavelength; the greater the amplitude, the louder the sound.

The silence of sleep, it’s so soothing; I’m never waking up. As my cells are re-energizing, my eyes are resting, and my mind is creating illusory stories drawn from my memories, the world keeps spinning, and I keep sleeping. The morning sun rises, and I hear the birds chirping from outside my window. The silence is gone, and I’m awake now. My day has begun.

Outside, everyone patiently waits for the performance to begin. The anticipation of the musical melodies are echoed through the chatter of the crowd. As the guitars are plugged in, amps turned on, and microphones checked, the destruction of silence begins. First, with the proclamation of the musician’s presence, followed by the first strum of his guitar. Now, the cheers begin, and the once silent space is immersed in the sound waves coming from the stage in front of the crowd. Silence has been completely

how is light created?

radiant

Light is energy that is visible to the human eye. Light is created by electrons in an excited state, or a high energy configuration, returning back to the ground state, or a lower energy configuration. When this happens, an electromagnetic photon is emitted, creating light, from infrared, visible or ultraviolet spectrums. This chapter takes you through experiences of light being created.

My day has just ended around 9:00pm. I open the door and there is nobody home. I

through the darkness trying to find my way upstairs to my bedroom. The blinds are partly shut, and the only thing I can see is a

glimmering light shining through the crack. With no overhead light installed, the only way to eliminate the darkness is to light the candle right next to my bed. I feel my way through the clutter gathered on my floor, and then to my nightstand where my lighter is. It takes a few tries to get the flame started, and then my candle is lit. The darkness has been destructed.

s e t a As the Earth rot the sun’s position appears to change. Trees, trashcans, cars,

houses, rocks, etc., all create beautiful shadows because of the sun. The shadows in themselves are darkness, no light can be seen in them. As the Earth rotates the shadows shadows disappear, eliminating light and shadows creating new shadows because of the new position we’re in.

How does affect the mind and body? 12

can stem from stress and/or sadness, and it affects the mind and body differently for everybody. Anxiety can come in the form of nervous habits like nail biting or hair twirling, it can also come in the form of breakdowns and panic attacks. Anxiety can lead one to avoid social situations and become worried about little things. This chapter takes you through experiences of anxiety and how creative expression helps this.

A quickened heartBeAT, a little sshaky h a k y in the hands, I’m sitting there terrified of leaving. The energy of my friends makes me even more nervous, I wonder, “Who is going to be there?” The popping of champagne, the loud music, and the smell of burning hair doesn’t sit well when anxiety kicks in. I can’t go, I’m not going. As my friends rush out the door, a sigh of relief is welcomed and I can channel my anxiety into creative expressions. I grab the canvas, paint, and brushes to get started.

“

And what is life without ambiguity? Perhaps the most obvious -- and most troubling -- example of contradiction in our universe is the constant tension between creation and destruction. Just as effortlessly as nature witnesses the dawn of every new day, birthing new life and bearing fresh buds, it simultaneously wreaks havoc, destruction, and decay. We integrate this contradiction in our daily lives. Composted waste, or manure, provides the soil for our crops, animals and plants die so that others may be nourished, and hearts break so that individuals may mature and grow and make room for new love.
