The what, why and how [ WELCOME] Hello, my name is Shuo (Hannah) Liu, a graphic designer based in San Francisco. Please take a moment to look at some of my work. Perhaps we’ll start a conversation about something. [ CONCEPT] Is graphic design book design or poster design? I think graphic design is the mindset of problem-solving. Every detail of the design exists to solve the corresponding problem. Designers have to think about the what of something, the why of it before they figure out the how.

A reason for gathering [ BACKGROUND ] This project is a redesign of a visual system for a real conference. Through the design of a set of conference deliverables, I learned how to design between different media and visual changes while keeping consistency. Also, I exercised the ability to translate a written language into a visual language. [ APPROACH ] The theme of this conference in 2018 is about how institutions and brands create culture. A lot of creative ideas emerged from this multi-industry discussion. Therefore, the three different posters of the main vision refer to the collision of many ideas in many industries. Each poster is composed of geometric space formed by geometric explosions. The vision is about power, implying an explosion of creativity, and bringing the audience a sense of active participation.

A space for space [ BACKGROUND ] This project is to redesign a non-fiction book. I redesigned it based on the original photos and text of the book. I chose a book called ”The Planets”. It is a photo collection and introduction of the planets of the solar system. [ APPROACH ] Because the original book images and text were designed separately, they didn’t connect with each other. In the redesigned book, I combined images and text together to make the audience read the content easier and faster. I hope to show the movement and vastness of the universe through the movement of the layout and make the book more interesting visually.

A home for life [ BACKGROUND ] This project is to design an app to solve some problem in life. Wherever I live, I like to decorate my home to make it warmer, so I designed this app “Homey.” During this project, I also learned and enjoyed the process of developing an app from the birth of ideas to design and refinement. [ APPROACH ] My app inspiration comes from the fact that I always put furniture in a new place to make it looks fresh. So I designed this app to help me and friends decorate the homes, also get inspiration and personal advice from each other.

A possibility for tomorrow [ BACKGROUND ] This project is about designing the promotion for a commercial typeface to sell to design studios or designers. [ APPROACH ] I chose Utopia for my promotional typeface and designed a double-sided poster for it. One side shows the specimen of Utopia. The other side consists of several small posters displaying the visual effect of the typeface in different situations that make designers better understand how to use it. The poster can be folded and put in an envelope, or hung up on a wall.

A treatment for terror [ BACKGROUND ] This project is to design a series of movie posters and a trailer. First, we needed to choose a movie, then explore a typeface in different ways according to the emotions of the movie. Next, we used the font features of the font to complete the design. The objective of this project is to find out more possibilities of typeface display by exploation and to provide new ideas for design. [ APPROACH ] The movie I chose is Split. The movie mainly talked about a split personality. I printed the font on paper and cut it. Then I wove, pulled out, deformed and stitched it together from a new combination to form the final design. The poster used a black and white tone to create a gloomy and terrible atmosphere.

A change for good [ BACKGROUND ] This project is a redesign of FedEx’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. I learned a lot about organizing photos and text variations and maintaining consistency. One of the key ideas that I learned from information design is how to find a better visual method to show a lot of data in the CSR report. [ APPROACH ] I used many geometric shapes to deal with photos because FedEx is an express company. These shapes symbolize the expansion of the transport box. Also, it is a good way to make photos and text have a connection because they can better line up with the grid appropriately. This book uses french-fold binding. Most of these photos I placed in the fold between pages to convey the concept of transfer.

A matter for scrutiny [ BACKGROUND ] This project is to design a book in a suitable way to introduce a phenomenon. The phenomenon I chose is “Decay.“ This project taught me how to tell stories and how to make ideas visible. [ APPROACH ] I think decay is a very interesting phenomenon, because of the different substances and microorganisms. I created illustrations to introduce this microcosmic world that people can’t see.
