The Cultural Revolution

Hannah Bertell Mrs. Schwartzman Period 6

姜其利房東 Jiang Ji-li Landlord Jiang Ji-li thinks she is so high class when in fact her grandfather is a landlord! She likes to go to her father's land and make fun of the workers thinking she is the best and superior. Jiang Ji-li should be punished for her crude actions as a black class citizen. Chairman Mao should be respected and so should workers!

I I am intelligent and gentle I wonder what my father is doing I hear thin face telling me to change my name I see kids taunting me for my class I want Chairman Mao to forgive me I am intelligent and gentle I pretend to be a Red Guard I feel neglected from everyone I touch Chairman Mao's hand as he congratulates me I worry if Chairman Mao won’t forgive me I cry about having a grandfather that was a landlord I am intelligent and gentle I understand I should change my family name I say I will change my name but don’t I dream to be a red class citizen I try to be brave all the time I hope fate will be nice to me I am intelligent and gentle

Cultural Revolution

Ji-young’s Diary Entry February 2 1966: Dear Diary, Today my Dad took Ji-li, Ji-yun, and I on a walk to talk about our family situation. Ji-li was asking many questions and Dad told us about our Grandfather, he was a landlord! I knew we were not a red class family because our family was not fully respected and Ji-li asked father is he was a rightist but he said no thankfully. July 8 1967: Dear Diary, Today someone took my favorite army cap! was furious and I wanted it back. I showed no mercy and after I got home from that I went back to find the kid who took and gave him a piece of my mind. He called me a black whelp once again but I didn’t care. I finally got my cap back and showed them a piece of my mind. August 19 1968: Dear Diary, The worst thing ever has happened, Dad has been detained! I don’t understand why he was I overheard Mom say something about a crime but I knew Dad would never do a thing. People have started to be meaner to my family and I am furious because of that but when people are mean to me, I try not to let it bother me and if it does I will take it into my own hands.

Revolution: Banishing 4 Olds

Don’t be old forever!

About the Author I was born in Miami, Florida, February 18 2002. I have been at Gulliver Academy almost my whole life. The story Red Scarf Girl changed my opinion on The Cultural Revolution because it taught me how serious this time was and how people really lived and were treated during this time. This book changed my opinion on one specific statement that under most circumstances people will go along with the crowd. At the beginning of the book I thought that was a false statement but now after reading the story I feel that is very true. Another opinion that changed was about the statement that people should always follow the rules of the government. Before reading this book I agreed with that statement but now I feel that is not always true because sometimes the government can enforce ridiculous laws and ones that don’t make sense like during the cultural revolution the rules were not fair.
