What is a PUBLIC BATHROOMS & ENTRYWAYS OVERSEER?
The PB&E Overseer is responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of all public bathrooms and interior entryways throughout a group’s event.
We all have had the experience of eating at a very good restaurant with great food. All seemed good until we used the bathroom and discovered some or all of the following: sticky floor, water all over the counter, hand towels and paper on the floor, wastebasket overflowing, etc. Suddenly our “good” experience soured and our impression of the restaurant diminished. We do not want that to ever be the experience of any people who attend our events. We may have very good messages, but if everything else we provide does not support our spiritual message we may inadvertently diminish the impact of that message.
The entryways are also an important part of everyone’s initial experience attending events. It is crucial that all doorways and pathways are kept clear, clean, organized, and well-lit. By providing this we facilitate the quick and safe movement of many saints passing through these areas as they take off or put on coats, shoes, etc., as well as move their often large luggage and other belongings with them.
When both the public bathrooms and entryways are well maintained the saints use of these areas will not be memorable in a negative way. This will contribute to the goals of your serving
team and contribute to the spiritual message and gatherings becoming the memorable and impactful part of everyone’s stay.
PART 1: PUBLIC BATHROOMS
This service category pertains mainly to events using the Fellowship Center, however, there are “public bathrooms” in each of the houses. The cleaning and care for the public bathrooms in the Log House and the Huntington House are primarily the responsibility of the respective House Hosts. “Public bathrooms” are any bathrooms that are not related to one specific bedroom or have an entry from a common hallway, and therefore may be used by many saints. These bathrooms must be looked after during your event, kept clean and properly stocked, and then cleaned thoroughly after the event is over.
At the Fellowship Center there are two bathrooms on the main floor that are public and are gender specific. One is for SISTERS only, the other is for BROTHERS only. The overseer will need to train female helpers who can access the sisters’ bathroom at any time and male helpers who can access the brothers’ bathroom at any time. The other public bathrooms in the house are not gender specific and can be cleaned and cared for by sisters or brothers.
PART 2: ENTRYWAYS
Throughout every event and at the end of an event it is the responsibility of the Public Bathrooms Overseer to ensure that all interior areas of entryways are kept in a clean and orderly fashion. Each entryway of each house is unique in the type and amount of traffic that it receives. This means that all exterior doorways will need to be checked periodically and the appropriate actions taken to ensure that access in and out will be safe and the area is clean.

BATHROOMS
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE OVERSEER
The coordinator bears the responsibility for the condition of the public bathrooms throughout the entire event – even if others from the team do the spot checking and the cleaning work. If the bathroom is in a condition that needs attention, the coordinator is responsible to do the work if others of the team have not or are not able. All public bathrooms should be checked regularly, at least several times each

CHECKING AND CLEANING BATHROOMS DURING YOUR EVENT
As the overseer of the bathrooms for your event, you and your team must check and clean the following items regularly:
1. Counters should be wiped off periodically of excess water. Any water on the floor should also be wiped up.
2. Mirrors should be cleaned if there is water droplets or soap spray on them.
3. Soap dispenser levels should be checked and refilled if below half-full.
4. Paper towel dispensers should be checked and watched for when they will be empty. When a roll is completely out (or almost out) it can be replaced with a full roll.
5. Toilet paper in the stalls should be checked. If rolls are empty (or almost empty) they should be replaced. Partial rolls should be placed in the bathroom cabinet of Bedrm#11.
[Men’s Room] Urinals should be flushed when the bathroom is checked regardless of being used or not.
[Men’s Room] Floor should be cleaned when needed by the sink and urinals.
Large wastebaskets should be checked, contents compressed, and when full, taken out and replaced.
[Women’s Room] Toilet stall wastebaskets should be emptied.
Garbage should be taken directly to the dumpster outside.
Any chemical spills on the cabinet bottom or dripping on the bottles should be carefully cleaned up.
HOW TO CLEAN BATHROOMS
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE THREE HOUSES
At the Fellowship Center, it should be kept in mind that the bathrooms related to Bedrooms #6-9 in the basement and Bedrooms #26-28 on the second floor are used by saints staying in several different bed rooms. This means that these bathrooms may not be looked after by any one specif ically, so the Public Bathrooms Overseer MUST also check these bathrooms regularly.
Public bathrooms in the Log House and at the Huntington House are the responsibility of the House Hosts of those houses. If they so choose, they may designate some one staying in their house to clean and care for those public bathrooms. But the respon sibility for them still belongs to the House Hosts.
HOW TO CLEAN THE BATHROOMS
Laminated INSTRUCTION CARDS (English and Chinese) containing details for cleaning each bathroom can be found on the inside of the cabinet doors underneath the sink in every bathroom. Three different cards are included on p. 9-11for your reference. The card pertaining to Personal Bathrooms (bath rooms located mainly inside bedrooms) will pertain to all bathrooms at the Log House and the Huntington House, regardless of whether they are public or personal. The cards pertaining to the Men’s and Women’s rooms refer specifically to those rooms at the Fellowship Center.
In addition, a laminated card with instruc
tions for “How To Use A Plunger” can be found in each bathroom behind the plung er next to the toilet.
*NOTE*
These four instruction cards can be found on the following pages in this handbook, p. 8-11. They are included here for your reference and to be used for training your team. You do not need to memorize them as they will be hanging in every bathroom for your reference during the event. How ever, please read through each one at least once to familiarize yourself and your team members with what to expect.
HOW TO USE A PLUNGER
When a toilet is clogged and has the potential to overflow, or if it already has overflowed:
1. TURN the WATER OFF to that toilet by turning the shut-off valve located behind the toilet.
If the obstruction is a solid object like a children’s toy or washcloth or hand towel, see if you can remove it by hand. WEAR RUBBER GLOVES before reaching into the toilet bowl or touching objects that have been there.
2. Before using the plunger, make sure the toilet bowl contains enough water to submerge the head of the plunger.
3. PLACE THE PLUNGER over the hole in the toilet forming a tight seal. (tip: Before using the plunger, run hot water over it to loosen the rubber so it forms a better seal.)
4. LIFT the plunger up and down RAPIDLY an inch or so on every upstroke while keeping the plunger under the water level.
***BE PATIENT.*** It may take multiple plunge cycles to loosen the clog and clear the toilet.
5. TURN the WATER ON and let the toilet refill.
6. FLUSH IT several times to clean it and to make sure it is flowing properly
7. RINSE THE PLUNGER in the clean water of the toilet before putting it back. Place it on top of a paper towel until it is dry.
8. NOTIFY the House Host of this event.
If using the plunger does not result in opening up the clog, notify Ben Shumway or Tim Miller.

PART 2:
ENTRYWAYS
Throughout every event and at the end of an event it is the responsibility of the Public Bathrooms Overseer to ensure that all interior areas of entryways are kept in a clean and orderly fashion. Each entryway of each house is unique in the type and amount of traffic that it receives. This means that all exterior doorways will need to be checked periodically and the appropriate actions taken to ensure that access in and out will be safe and the area is clean.
All shoes left at the doorways must be placed on shoe racks. When the shoe racks are full, the shoes can be neatly placed under the racks, under nearby benches, or lined up in such a way so as not to obstruct the passageway. No shoes should be left on the floors directly in front of the doors. This is a safety issue. The Overseer must straighten the shoes as part of the regular cleaning process. Shoe-racks themselves may need to be cleaned when necessary. Use the proper vacuum tool or a dampened floor rag, depending on the type of dirt.
Rugs need to be swept and cleaned of all obvious dirt, stones, grass, paper, etc. You may use a vacuum, but in many cases a broom and dustpan will be quicker and more efficient. Mud should be wiped up with paper towels or dampened floor rags. Snow or standing water should be wiped up with paper towels. If the rugs are heavily wet from rain or snow, do not vacuum them and instead take them to an area where they can be dried and then cleaned before returning them to their location.
