ABSTRACT The contemporary city appears as a sea of podium-towers circumscribed by greenery. The tower and the green in-betweens are representative of the two driving development regimes shaping the city of Toronto, landscape urbanism and what I’m calling Condo Urbanism. The result for public life is this: in their amenity-filled podiums, condo developments privatize, homogenize, and parcelize civic amenity. The traditional park, modeled on passive recreation, offers a weak response in its static typology and inelastic program. My project, Amenity Urbanism, responds by creating a rich multiplicity of amenity within the urban fabric. It proposes a more nuanced mode of development that untidies the relationship between public and private, indoor and outdoor, and condo and park. It leverages the construction of new condo and office towers to create an explosion of leisure programs for the public, redefining both park and podium.
