Positive School Culture
Pam Brantner, Sunnyside Elementary Principal
If you follow any education accounts on social media, chances are you have seen pictures of inspirational quotes decorating school hallways, self-esteem boosting notes on bathroom mirrors, or students celebrating kindness in other ways. This is a great thing! Schools all over the globe are embracing the promotion of self-love, kindness, and inclusion. In a world with much hate, this is something all schools should embody.
So, I bet you are wondering what is Pullman School District doing to create a positive culture? Well, we are doing many great things in all the schools. First off, Second Step, a social skills program is used within elementary classrooms, grades P-5. This is designed to help staff teach students important skills in goal setting, decision making, learning how to collaborate with others, gain confidence as well as building a friendship base. Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports is a framework that the elementary schools use to support students behavioral, academic, social, emotional and mental health. With PBIS each year we start the year off sharing the school wide expectations, teaching, modeling and rewarding for positive behavior. This way the students know expectations of different areas of the school. Each school has various clubs that support the culture and social wellbeing - such as the Sunnyside Superstar Minds matter, Social Justice Club, Diversity, Equity and Belong Team (staff lead), Parent Advisor Committee and Student Advisor Committee, just to name a few.
As educators, we know the most important people that must be included in school culture are parents and students. It is crucial to establish clear and open communication with parents and guardians. Connecting the school experience to the family environment creates consistency for students. This also involves others in reiterating classroom and learning expectations. Parental involvement adds a layer of support from the external school communities. It supports student growth and social-emotional learning builds positive relationships among the school and family. When students feel engaged, they build relationships that affirm their safety and welcome them into a space that wants to see them learn. Additionally, they have a sense of focus in school and have more success. At each elementary we listen to new ideas (take risks) and value the student voice. Students have ideas about what creates a learning environment that is supportive and leverage student ideas to build plans that promote a positive school culture.
Improving school climate and culture not only boosts morale, but it also increases attendance rates and reduces disciplinary issues. Social-emotional learning initiatives are being implemented in schools across the country in the hope of helping this as well. Mental health requirements are also becoming mandatory in schools, letting students know what signs to look for and where to go for help.
Sunnyside Elementary Kindergarten Team named 2023
inspired by the team’s focus always being on putting "Students First.” The Sunnyside Kindergarten Team always prioritizes what is needed for each and every student to succeed.
Pam Brantner, Sunnyside Elementary School Principal, shared that “[Annalisa, Jessica, and Willma] work to provide clear and concise lessons that directly impact student learning. Strong educators consider how the students will learn the material best. Knowing their students’ strengths and weaknesses, they plan lessons to ensure that students understand the concept and draw on items that engage student learning. After each common assessment, they research, select, and implement instructional strategies in their classrooms. Agreeing on common instructional strategies ensures better continuity for students. Student uncertainty and stress will be reduced, leading to higher levels of confidence and engagement. This team continues to grow each and every time they meet. The sky is the limit for this team and the students they serve.”
From all of us here at Pullman School District, we extend our congratulations to Annalisa Kiblen, Jessica Bergstrom, and Willma Fields – Sunnyside Elementary Kindergarten Team!

At the April 26, 2023 Regular Board Meeting, the Sunnyside Elementary Kindergarten Team was presented with the 2023 Dedicated Teaching Team Recognition Award by the Pullman Public Schools Board of Directors. Each year, the board typically has selected one certificated employee to receive this recognition; however, this year our Board of Director’s is presenting a “Dedicated Teaching Team Recognition Award” in lieu of the “Dedicated Teacher Award.” This recognition is in appreciation of that team’s demonstrated dedication to students and to their school.

Participating in Public School Governance
Nathan Roberts, School Board President – District 1
With the end of the school year fast approaching, the Pullman School District is already looking ahead to the next school year. In planning for the coming year, it is crucial for us to have input from the community to ensure all voices are heard and included in the planning process. Community involvement and support are as important as ever in helping to advance our common goals and make our school district reflect the best of us. Participating in the governance of local schools is one of the privileges afforded to us in our democracy and one that many take for granted.
One way that community members can participate in school governance is by attending meetings of the Pullman School Board and providing public comments on our policies and agenda items. Public comments are an often-underutilized aspect of local control and school governance. Everyone, not just parents or students, has a right defined in law to participate in public comment and let their voices be heard on school district activities, interests, or policy discussions. We post agendas for every public meeting where anyone can review all items up for discussion to prepare their comments and speak about the issue when it is most impactful, during the voting process.
The Washington State Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA) requires that school board meetings be open to the public, that advance notice is given of agenda items, and that the public is allowed to speak and be heard during these meetings. Our school district not only strives to comply with these rules but also to encourage community participation through surveys, outreach, and publishing content online. We are always looking for ways to make public comments more accessible, inclusive, and convenient.
To make it easier for community members to participate, the
school district live streams its meetings and archives them on YouTube.com. This makes it possible for anyone to watch past meetings if they cannot attend meetings in person and to do research on past activities. We also post our meeting schedules online, on social media, and in public communications. If you are unable to attend, we have alternative means of communication that can make it easier for you to participate in the decisionmaking process. For instance, people who find it difficult to attend meetings in person can email their statements directly to the board chair or superintendent.
Attending board meetings is not just useful for letting your voice be heard. At every meeting the board also seeks to engage with the community by hearing from building administrators and staff about programs that are important to all our students. Our goal is to inform our community about all the schools’ activities and to promote awareness about changes in policy, curriculum, activities, and other initiatives from both national, state, and local levels. Informing our public is essential to the success of the board’s goals as your democratically elected representatives.
Community involvement and support are essential for the success of any school district. Participating in public comment periods, watching board meetings, and providing feedback will help us create a more inclusive school district and increase feelings of engagement and participation in the decision-making process in our community.
The opinions expressed in Board Reports are those of individual school board members and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of the board as a whole or of Pullman Public Schools
Thank you to our 2022-2023 Pullman High School Student Ambassadors!
The program has been a great partnership and has provided students with the opportunity to share their voice with district administrators and the school board. Some highlights of the productive conversations and work of the team include:
• Partnering with Washington State University (WSU) Teaching & Learning Department to help support and promote their story about what they are doing as youth leaders
• Finding ways to make Pullman High School more sustainable including exploring partnership opportunities with WSU. This team worked diligently on the implementation of a composting program at PHS this school year.
• Partnering with PHS ASB club on various events.
The Student Ambassador Program is a team that is comprised of representatives from the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes at Pullman High School. The students met with the Superintendent, Pullman High School Principal, and other district staff throughout the 2022-2023 school year to share information, provide feedback on the high school experience, and broaden the understanding of school-related issues.
The Pullman School District Board of Directors and the Pullman School District shall provide equal educational opportunity and treatment for all students in all aspects of the academic and activities programs without regard to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, honorably-discharged veteran or military status, sex, sexual orientation (including gender expression or identity), marital status, the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability, participation in the Boy Scouts of America or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. The district will provide equal access to school facilities to the Boy Scouts of America and all other designated youth groups listed in Title 36 of the United States Code as a patriotic society. District programs will be free from sexual harassment.
The following employees have been designated to handle questions and complaints of alleged discrimination: Civil Rights Coordinator and Title IX Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent, (509) 332-3144, and Section 504 Coordinator, Director of Special Services, (509) 332-3144. 240 SE Dexter Street, Pullman, WA 99163 Applicants with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in the application process by contacting the Personnel Coordinator at (509) 332-3584.
• Brainstorming new and innovative ways to raise awareness around student attendance and providing feedback on district processes for encouraging student attendance.
Thank you to all of our Pullman High School Student Ambassadors for providing insight into the student experience at PHS, and helping PHS to continue to provide an excellent education and experience for high school students!

Pullman Regional Hospital Names 2023 Outstanding Employee and Nurse Excellence Award Winners
Pullman, WA—As a part of Hospital Week celebrations, Pullman Regional Hospital recognized Nadia Rivas, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the Emergency Department as Outstanding Employee for 2023, and Stephanie Knewbow, Registered Nurse and Director of the Emergency Department with the Nurse Excellence Award for 2023.
as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department and now serves as Director. She was nominated by four of her colleagues for the yearly Nurse Excellence honor and was selected from a pool of nine nominees.
One colleague described Knewbow as “responsive, smart, and exceedingly humble,” while another wrote, “Stephanie is a great nurse leader, walking deftly between the patient, nursing, and physician worlds. She does a great job of communicating with patients and making them feel heard and making sure they receive the safe care they deserve.”
About the Outstanding Employee Award
Employees with two or more years of service and who are in good standing with updated licenses and certifications are eligible to be nominated for the Outstanding Employee Award. After evaluation of all applications, a winner is selected by a committee of past Outstanding Employee Award recipients.
About the Nurse Excellence Award
The Nurse Excellence Award has been given for the past thirty years at Pullman Regional Hospital. Nurses (LPN or RN) are recognized for going above and beyond the requirements of their job to provide quality patient care and demonstrate consistency with the cultural values of the organization.
Rivas has worked at Pullman Regional Hospital for five years as a CNA in the Emergency Department. She was nominated by four of her colleagues for the annual honor of Outstanding Employee and was selected from a pool of ten nominees.
Colleagues of Rivas described her as “perpetually cheerful, helpful and proactive,” “loved by her patients,” and “Nadia has an infectious positive energy that improves any shift she’s on.” Additional comments noted her strong work ethic, intelligence, and desire to always learn. She was described as going above and beyond her job through her vigilance in anticipating patient needs.
Cheryl Holman is the 2021 Volunteer of the Year, as C0VID-19 slowed down her recognition and we would like to celebrate her as she first got involved with PRH in May of 2019 and has donated over 800 hours.
Cheryl was raised in central Washington. She moved to Pullman in the fall of 2018 to be closer to her daughter and family. “My husband was very ill and passed away at PRH a couple months after our move,” Cheryl said. “The hospital staff was so caring and supportive of me and my family, I knew I would volunteer as soon as I felt comfortable.” Her volunteer duties for PRH have included working at the front desk, clerical, sewing rice bags for PRH’s new mothers and com-fort blankets, and knitting hats for newborn. She volunteers at the Holiday Tea and Have-A-Heart Fundraiser and any other projects she is asked to participate in.

The Gladish Community and Cultural Center June Events
Coming up at The Gladish in June is our murder Mystery!
It’s the height of Prohibition in 1920s Chicago, and there’s a mob war brewing between the South Side Gangsters and the
Northern Chicago Mob Outfit. The two ruthless crime leaders Hal Sapone and Beanie O’Dannon have finally reached an agreement on bootlegging practices in Chicago and have decided to pull together resources to undergo a collaborative effort with criminal endeavors.
On the surface, this strategy seems similar to bailing out a sinking ship with tin cups, nevertheless. Recently, gangsters from the north and south have been spotted together at various speakeasies throughout Chicago, but the tension in the air is always thick enough to be cut with a knife.
However, this newfound relationship between the opposing mob bosses has served, thus far, to inhibit gratuitous bloodshed as in the past. Part of the success of this truce is that both crime bosses have found new dames, thereby intertwining more mutual relationships between the two factions. The two gangs have set an official date to meet at Hal Sapone’s Grand Gatsby Speakeasy to resolve all remaining differences.
Will these two underground organizations resolve their disputes or will a massive melee erupt, rekindling the fatal flames between them? This is where your story begins. Tickets are available now at gladishcommunity.org/tickets.
After buying your ticket be sure to fill out the character selection to get the specific character that you want!
While we may only be having one event in June, it isn’t for a lack of trying or commitment. We are kicking off our con-
struction in different areas of the building! Starting at the end of June we will remodel 315 into a lobby and conference room. An elevator shaft will be put in the Northwest section of the building going from the 3rd floor to the Basement level. A patio put on the roof directly outside of the View Room.
The lobby will start to take shape on the 2nd floor, consuming the rooms down on that floor. With less events happening this year, we turn to you to humbly ask for your help in making this possible. If you feel up to it, we ask kindly for your support. You can donate to the project at gladishcommunity.org/ donate
Pullman Community Update 9 JUNE 2023 GLADISH COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL CENTER

10 Pullman Community Update JUNE 2023 CITY OF PULLMAN
ELECTED OFFICIALS
Big Future, Small Price Tag! Pullman Center in Profile
Kyle Serrott, SFCC faculty and WSU Ph.D. candidate in American Studies and Culture, has inspired colleagues and students through his creative, student-centered teaching and the content and volume of his research and presentations. Most recently, Serrott presented at the Indigenous Research Conference at WSU and the International Hate Studies Conference at CCS. Students at the Pullman Center praise his participatory emphasis in class discussions and projects and their sense of discovery and connections even in familiar topics of history and humanities. We had a chance to connect with Serrott about the exciting news in his research and teaching.
There's a buzz at our Center about your classes. What's your special formula?
Oh, that's lovely to hear, and also what I hear from my students about their other classes and instructors. I don't have a special formula, though I am passionate about teaching and love our students' creativity and curiosity. Above everything else, I am an advocate, for my students, for the study of history, and for inclusive and just conversations about our society's foundation and direction.
OK. Tell us about your classes!
I attempt to create learning spaces of reciprocity and mutuality, not hierarchy or authority. I invite students to bring their own experiences and perspectives and emphasize partnership and community in the classroom. It's vital to me that my course and lesson plans match student interests while I keep learning outcomes in sight. I want that we create our classroom environment and learning together.
Interesting. How does that work day-today?
If there is trust, there will be reciprocity and shared responsibility in the classroom and in our relationships. Too often, our policies penalize students for the intricacies of their daily lives. Imposed and inflexible deadlines, attendance, and grading policies get in the way of student success. I am not an enforcer of rules; I view my teacher role as a facilitator of learning and class experiences to which everyone contributes.
How about history and historiography?
I teach with attention to "rebel histories" or "counter-history," which takes as its basis and starting point that history is experienced differently by different populations and people rather than as something objective or a sequence of facts. This inclusive approach allows students to see historical subjects but also themselves in complex ways that are frequently novel and excluded from traditional accounts.
News & Updates
We welcome Dr. Raymond Herrera as the keynote speaker at the CCS Pullman Commencement on June 12 at Daggy Hall. Dr. Herrera is an Associate Vice Provost of the Graduate School and the Director and PI of the Ronald E. McNair PostBaccalaureate Achievement Program at Washington State University. Experience a sound bath
Nara Woodland is offering a sound bath healing program June 10 at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU.
A sound bath features soothing ambient sounds composed by a sound therapy practitioner. Participants are bathed in deep sound vibrations during the full-body listening experience. The sound frequencies can slow down brain waves to a deeply restorative state, activating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system.
Woodland of Brain Body Balance Sound Therapy will include frequencies from “Ambiente432,” an interactive sound sculpture created for the museum by artist and composer Trimpin
The hour-long meditative experience runs from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat, pillow, blanket, and water bottle.
After the sound bath, Kristin Becker, the museum’s curator of education and programs, will lead a short tour of the exhibit “Keiko Hara: Four Decades of Paintings and Prints.”
Visitors might also want to view “What Was Always Yours and Never Lost,” which runs through July 29. The collection introduces recent works of video art and experimental documentary by Indigenous filmmakers from throughout North America.
The nine films traverse a wide range of topics while touching on indigeneity and assertions of identity in the face of colonial history.
The museum, located in the Crimson Cube, is open 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Call (509) 335-1910. On the web: museum.wsu.edu
Farm Plans Late Opening

The farm, part of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, regularly opens its farm stand Friday afternoons from May through October.

To stay up to date with farm happenings, including info about the late start this season, sign up for its newsletter at css.wsu.edu/organicfarm/ or visit its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WSUOrganicFarm/.

A Conversation with Vietnam Veteran and Inventor John Merrill
John Merrill lives in Community Action Center’s Riverview Apartments. Riverview offers affordable housing, and prioritizes housing for people with experiences of homelessness and veterans like John.
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I was raised in Minnesota, I graduated from University of Minnesota with a degree in math and chemistry and an MBA from Stanford. I am married with three grown kids and grandkids.
I was in the service for a couple years in the Vietnam era. I am an inventor with my own company; I have a few patents and am working on one now – a monitor to detect waterborne contaminates in a continuous flow. I just finished that project at WSU. I did the electrical engineering piece of that project. I am moving the project to Boise State in Idaho to finish it off.
Tell me about your journey of coming to live at Riverview.
My wife and I were living in Wisconsin and left Wisconsin, drove west, and ended up in Spokane. For ten months we were homeless. I don’t mean living in a tent, because the VA put us into a Motel 6. We lived in a Motel 6 for ten months with a cat. The VA put me in touch with CAC. I was able to get out of Motel 6 and move into the apartment [at Riverview].
What was Community Action Center’s role in your journey?
The lady handling my case with the VA in Spokane made the contact with Community Action Center. All I had to do was show up, inspect the place, and move in!
How do you like living at Riverview?
I like the apartment better than the motel! Pullman is a safe community, we don’t have carjackings here, which is fine with me. The country’s a mess, but it doesn’t seem to be invading Pullman too much so that’s a good thing.

PULLMAN COMMUNITY MONTESSORI
PULLMAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL ON AGING
Centre for the Arts at Gladish: Buy-a-seat Campaign
Pullman is blessed to have a number of performing arts organizations but is lacking a truly professional space to perform. This new Centre gives our organizations that performance space and also opens the door for all our organizations to collaborate and grow together. It will be a place for our community to enjoy the arts and where our arts professionals can grow and thrive!
Being able to bring more events to the local community is something that Pullman has wanted for a long time. With the Centre for the Arts we will be able to provide that to the community through music, performances, plays, and many more. This in turn will allow us to provide more community minded programming and events that get our town involved and at The Gladish.
Our team is planning a full remodel of the Richard Domey Auditorium, The Little Theater, and an expansion to The View Room, to create performance spaces for concerts, theatrical productions, and more!
With the remodel of the spaces, the Gladish’s new PAC will partner with our communities arts organizations, like The Washington Idaho Symphony, Palouse Choral Society, and the Community Band of the Palouse, to create a home for our thriving arts community. This is where you, our community come in, and we have an amazing opportunity for you. We are pleased to announce our Buy-a-Seat campaign! The Buy-a-Seat allows you to have your name, or memory/honor of a loved one added to a seat.
Buy-a-Seat is available at www.cftagladish.org, or by following the QR code to the left!
Buy-a-Seat is a tax-deductible donation to a 501(c)(3) non-pro t organization.
