I am a fourth year Interior Architecture student anticipating graduating in May of 2020. Throughout my academic career, I have found a passion for designing spaces that correspond to contemporary needs and future issues. I enjoy learning and working with various software, and expanding my abilities in the design process. I believe great design is the result of collaboration and innovation.

This Microschool was inspired by brain stimulations when reacting with light. In the previous research, light stimulation to the brain has been discovered to assist people with neurological diseases - in this case, epilepsy. The focus of this school is to give children with epilepsy a place they can feel welcome, confident, and joyful for learning. This school includes: reception space, two open classrooms, light therapy classroom, and double office for the staff. The amphitheater classroom is used for group gatherings and teaching, the open classroom is used for small group teaching, and the light therapy classroom is used for small group teaching, relaxation and reflection, and getting the light therapy needed to assist the students’ neurological needs. The hybrid ceiling system that uses steel and wood veneer contrasts with the white tile used on the floor, making each space have a natural, light feel. The ceiling system consists of a repeating, straight lined pattern with curved intersecting ribs that lower into a few of the spaces, making the space feel more intimate. New Horizons Academy is a special place with a special design for children, staff, and parents to enjoy.

The goal of the brain wave studies was to see the different variances of oscillations that happen within the brain during activities. There are Beta and Alpha waves that react when being fully alert and active, and also when being creative. Neurologists have found that using laser light therapy to stimulate these two brain waves simultaneously can help people with Epilepsy.

The mission for Vertical Connection was to take an existing building consisting of 70,000 sq.ft. and manipulate it into an office for our client - Birsel and Seck. The program included production, fabrication, maker, office, public, and private space - including a public amenity. Keeping the spirit of Birsel and Seck a priority, while also adding the character of Knoxville was vital to the design. The structure provided on 701 East Hill Avenue allowed for versatile rethinking of the interior spaces, while also giving an opportunity to reimagine the interior and exterior relationships within the site. This particular area in Knoxville is one in need of reconnection to the city, and having a space that can allow the public to connect and interact with the people of Birsel and Seck is an inspiration to the city as a whole.

Vertical Connection was inspired by the waterfalls and gorges created by Victoria Falls in Zambia, Africa. The waterfall descends vertically into the gorges created below, connecting the two land forms together. In the building, the public Rock Climbing amenity wall runs vertically through all four floors, causing each floor to have that Vertical connection to one another. The rock wall’s form was created by the waterfall’s circulation pattern, which is carried through-out the building as exterior facades and interior walls.

Interrupting the Highline is centered and focused not only on art, but the art installations, galleries, and museums along the High Line. At the beginning of the project, the direction explored was adding a school or art center to the High Line where people could come and learn how to make their own art. This art center could be for anyone who has a love and passion for art and wants to further their knowledge in the field. It could also be a chance for local artists to come and either learn more about art or teach their knowledge to others. Having the site to be at the intersection of Gansevoort Street and Washington Street, the installation would relate well to the context around it because of the Whitney Museum being next door, and it could potentially be a program that is connected to the museum.

PAINTING
As I was doing my research of the art galleries, one painting I found that inspired me is Bernard Parfetti’s “Untitled, 2016” canvas painting. His use of linear forms and curvaceous circulation helped lead me in the direction of my design. With that, I started diagramming and analyzing the painting and started to pull forms from the rectangular colors and curved lines. 31
The design resulted to four pods that extend off both sides of the High Line that will be used as multiple art class spaces and one single officespace. The pods are layered with ribbed panels that are continuous to the left and right of the spaces, which continue underneath the High Line in a sculptural manner. The pod spaces will include class types such as painting, sculpting, and graphic design; the painting space is imagined to be versatile in a way that people can either sit and paint using an easel or the surface can fold down and be used as a table surface. For the sculpting space, the surfaces can be used for work and display. Lastly, for the graphic design space, it is imagined that the table top surface will be an interactive screen that allows the work being done on the screen to be displayed on to the wall for all to see at a larger scale.
