FEMINIST SLOGANS
STATEMENT SNEAKERS AKA A SLEEK VERSION OF DAD SNEAKERS THESE SNEAKERS MARRY FUNCTION + FASHION These type of chunky sneakers have been around for years, but were typically worn by dad and seen as “uncool.” These dad sneakers went through a ”glow up” and are now available in different colors and styles. These statement sneakers were seen all over the runway in recent fashion shows. They can also be seen in daily street-wear.
UTILITY WEAR COMFORTABLE AND CHIC In the past utility wear was about function rather than fashion. This styles has been seen in the 70’s, 90’s and early 00’s. This trend is “a perfect alternative to jeans, pair these pants with your favorite white blouse for an effortlessly put -together ensemble.” Like dresses or jumpsuits it takes the guesswork out of getting ready for the day.
HAIR CLIPS FUNCTION AND DESIGN Experts believes hair clips and other hair accessories are coming back in style because of the nostalgic feel. These throwback hair accessories include, but not limited to snap barrettes, scrunchies, and headbands. These were most popular in the 80’s, 90’s and early 00’s. It is an easy way to elevate and look.
BELT BAGS ATHEISURE AND NOSTALGIC Again another trend that has revamped a trend from the 80’s and 90’s. Similar to the old fanny packs it allows the user to move freely without being weighted down. This trend has been spotted in runways and in a lot of streetwear. “The bags encourage minimalism and hope to give the wearer a sense of freedom.”
COLOR BEIGE WARM, SOFT, COMFORT, SUBTLE + UNDERSTATED Neutral colors will always be style. The color beige may evoke warmth, soft, comfort, subtle, natural and good taste. Pantone has reserved four spots in their spring color forecast. It contrast the recent popular colors like millennial pink and gen-z yellow. Beige may be seen as boring, but “it has range and it has the ability to amplify nearly every other piece in your wardrobe.
STRAPPY SANDALS MINIMALISTIC AESTHETIC Strappy sandals are back! They were best known in the 90’s. They can be worn a variety of way. You can dress them up or down. “These shows were meant to be slipped on after work and strutted down the city street as if you’re Carrie Bradshaw.”
TIE DYE FREE SPIRITED AND ECCENTRIC Tie-dye is most synonymous with the 1960’s. At the time it was a way to express freedom and individuality. “Experts say there is a clear political and social parallels to be made with the 1960’s.” Today it may be done in rebellion against fast fashion.
SUSTAINABILITY SIMPLIFY TO AMPLIFY Sustainable fashion is not new. Today people are more educated and conscious of their choices, including their shopping habits. Sustainable fashion may mean having a more minimalist wardrobe, thrifting or buying second hand.
LEATHER EVERYTHING LEATHER NEVER LOOKED SO MATURE Leather like most of these trends is nothing new. The process of creating leather is long and tedious. Today we are seeing leather everything — jackets, skirts, pants, shorts, bags, shirts, accessories! This leather trend is seen as full garments or added as an accent. The variety of items allows this trend to be worn in several different ways.
BAGGY JEANS ANTI-SKINNY JEAN TREND TAKING OVER Prior to this baggy jean trend the rave was all about skinny jeans and even jeggings. Baggy jeans can be tricky to pull off but they can worn so many ways. They can be paired with feminine or masculine items.
SOCK BOOTS “LESS SEXY NAME EVER COINED FOR A SHOE” Sock boots are not a new trend. They are not as popular as they were when they first came out, but they are still kicking around. There are still seen worn by many influencers and celebrities. They were first seen in fall 2016 as the term “athleisure” launched.
PLASTIC WEAR CHEAP AND DURABLE The trend was most seen in spring 2018. Plastic is a cheap material to produce and can be sold at affordable prices. This transparent trend is seen from shoes, bags, coats, and more.
ANIMAL PRINT LEOPARD, TIGER, CHEETAH + ZEBRA “Trends come and go (and come and go), but there are some things that never go out of style. They may be more popular one season than another but, on the whole, they are forever pieces that form the cornerstones of our wardrobes.” And animal print is one of those forever pieces. It is one of those “oldie, but goodie” items. Animal print is a fun and easy way to amp up an outfit and add some sass.
FRINGE FRINGE NOT LIMITED ANY ONE SEASON Fringe has been used all throughout history. From flappers, wild west, rock ‘n roll, bohemian, stage divas, to now. Fringe as a detail can “be added to pieces that are relevant to and season — handbags, dresses, and outerwear included.”
EMBROIDERY
HAS BEEN AROUND AS LONE AS SEWING Embroidery is an old practice that is believe to have originated in Asia and the Middle East. The delicate detail of embroidery adds texture and visual interest to an item. It has been seen on shirts, pants, bags and even shoes.
FAUX FUR KEEP WARM AND LOOK GLAMOROUS Furs have been worn throughout history. Traditionally the furs were real. Consumers have become more mindful with their purchases as seen in the rise of the faux-fur trend. Cruelty-free buyers are thinking and buying differently. “Faux fur is made from synthetic fibers that never biodegradable and are not kept and reused and recycled like real fur is. This allows buyers to keep warm and look glamorous without the ethical concern around the matter.
BIKE SHORTS RELATIVE TO LEGGINGS Bike shorts were designed for bikers, but more recently have been embraced as part of the athleisure style. They have been seen on runways, streetwear and obviously bikers. To jazz up these bike shorts many juxtapose their casual feel with more everyday/formal wear.
PUFFY COATS COAT OR DUVET COVER? Puffy coats were not necessarily out of style, but they were just worn mostly for function. Puffy coats are very practical to keep warm. More recently they are worn for function and fashion. They are worn as a statement piece because of their size and styles. They are seen in a variety of stylescolors and patterns, mostly in street-wear.
SLEEVES W/ ATTITUDE SLEEVES ARE A STAPLE Sleeves are a major part of many of the garments made. This trend of statement sleeves hit its stride in 2018, but has continued in 2019. This trend is not going away anytime soon. Some of these sassy sleeves include bell shape, extra long, ruffles, bishop sleeves, cold shoulder, or off the shoulder. These are only a few of the many sleeves styles seen throughout history and that are worn today. These sleeves with attitude are attention grabbing and an easy way to dress up a look.
FEMINIST SLOGANS “SISTERHOOD IS POWERFUL” Everyone has their favorite slogan graphic tee. They were worn in the 1960’s. In 2016 Dior released a collection with the slogan tee — “we should all be feminist” Slogan tees like this one have been all over market from high end to everyday shops. Graphic slogan tees are a staple to street-wear. Slogans like these make a statement and give a voice to girl power. It is a way to start conversations with others.
AIR PODS “I CAN’T HEAR POOR” Airpods were first released in December 2016. Apple just released the second generation of AirPods this year. At first many thought the design was stupid. People did not like the look of the white “stem” hanging out of the ear. There was an explosion of memes and reactions to the design and saying AirPods were for the high end/ boujee people. The popularity of them grew greatly these past two years. After over criticizing the design people bought into the concept and AirPods took over. Now a lot of people have them regardless the design.
SELF CARE “SELF CARE IS NOT SELFISH More recently the idea of self care has been encouraged for all. I think this is in relation to the recent awareness of mental health. More people are aware of the reality of mental health and are more willing to talk about it. Self care is different for everyone- it may look like treating yourself to a special meal, shopping or taking a spa day.
CBD OIL CANNABIDIOL
Cannabidiol oil has become the hot new product! “The non-intoxicating marijuana extract is being credited with helping treat a host of medical problems -- everything from epileptic seizures to anxiety to inflammation to sleeplessness.” “CBD is extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants. It does not produce intoxication; marijuana’s “high” is caused by the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).”
NON-DAIRY ALTERNATIVES ALMONDS- OATS COCONUT-RICE- ETC Non-dairy milk alternative have existed for awhile now. Today people are more aware of what they are putting in their body. With the trend of self-care, detoxing and the variety of different diets people want to know what they are eating is good quality. In more recent years the market of non-dairy alternatives has grown greatly. Alternatives include almost any nut (almond, cashew, hazelnut), rice, oat, etc.
